Total Disposal Sale – J&A CARRINGTON, SCF. Due to Jane’s health we have decided to stop racing and as such on Wednesday the 14th of July 2010 we will be offering all our birds for sale. Nothing is being kept. This is a GENUINE total sale.

We hadn’t ‘planned’ to have a sale when we set out to breed our current youngsters. As you can see from the pairings I could have catered to the ‘pedigree’ but paired them to the best of our ability ... after all that’s what got us to this level. We loft trained the first and second round youngsters hoping we would be able to race until the final decision was made. The few third rounders were not let out. Mr Falcon took a few when they were very young and couldn’t compete and a combination of the falcon and goshawk one evening saw six gone, including a nest pair of ‘Gold Banders’ from ‘EyeLessToesLess’ one of Jane’s favourites.

In 2005 Jane and I visited Jason Stig (CCF) to purchase a number of Staf Van Reet youngsters off his directly imported stock. A short time later I was able to purchase three original pigeons. These were BBC Belg-01-6524723 ‘The Replacement Cock’, BBC Belg-00-6517657 ‘The Big Wattle Cock’ and BCPH Belg-01-6524746 ‘Jolie’. The two cocks are direct sons of Staf’s famous ‘Grote Tom’ and the hen is a granddaughter. The ‘Replacement Cocks’ first born son had bred two fed winners in his first year at stock (for P&J Stig and J&G Davison) and the nest mate brother to the Big Wattle cock had bred top pigeons for Jason.

To these pigeons we were fortunate to be able to add super quality birds from Tom Wills, (CCF) based around the famous ‘Producer Cock’ PRF-94-7210 Staf Van Reet sire of 17 x 1st prizes.

Our current team are the best birds we have ever owned for 100 kms to 650 kms racing. They are able to compete at the top level week after week, thrive when being backed up, and require little tossing or any special system.

A well known local flyer said to me I must be a ‘good ‘judge of a pigeon for being able to put together a top stock team in such a short period of time and me replying that “you had to do your homework, knowing where to go is a key ... then it was luck that you got a ‘good’ one rather than being a good judge”. Whatever is the case I always wanted to get pigeons from TOP flyers when they were on the way up! I believe our sale is one of those opportunities. Only time will tell.

Total Disposal Sale – J&A CARRINGTON, SCF. Background Staf Van Reet The world renowned Piet DeWeerdt has said that the Van Reet pigeons are “the fastest and most intelligent pigeons in the world”. Van Reet has had the fastest sprint pigeon in the province more than 22 times vs. over 100,000 pigeons. Staf has created his family based on the Old Line Janssens coming down from the "Half Fabry" of the Janssen Brothers. These are strong, tenacious pigeons that fly week after week and recuperate quickly.

"There are no secrets, just good pigeons and handlers".

Over the years, Staf has introduced a few Super pigeons to his family. This is how Staf's Super racer and breeder, Favorie BELG-659426/92, was produced. Favorie's sire is BELG-6611641/89 named "Grote Tom" ("Great Tom") an outstanding handling cock, he is bred from the Geschelpte Soontjens Cock from the famous loft of Joseph Soontjens, one of the greatest winning short distance champions in Belgium during the 1980's, and a daughter of Daniel, 57 x's 1 st. This cock has bred many winners including "Favorie" winner of 37 prizes in the first 10 positions, including 8 X's 1st. Also Den Don, winner of 38 prizes in the first 10 positions, including 10 X's 1st. What a pigeon “Don’t get caught up in the past! Always try to improve”.

The 2001 season (Staf’s last) was another great one for Staf, winning 22 x 1st and 1st Speed Pigeon Antwerp Province, and 3rd National Ace Pigeon of All Belgium KDBD. Jos Soontjens by August Daelemans (...extract) Jos Soontjens of Wommelgem in the Antwerp province was unbeatable on distances between 110 and 360 km. There was a racing season where all fifteen races of 225 km (Noyon) were won by Jos Soontjens, and this in a combine of 8 villages and more than 600 members (!). These and other results inspired fanciers like Pros Roosen, Romain Moons and Luc, Bart and Jurgen Geerinckx to improve their stock.

With their pigeons based on the Soontjens bloodline they won national and provincial races and Belgian National K.B.D.B. championships and Ace pigeons.

Jos Soontjens - reprinted from Ad Schaerlaecken's website (...extract) “I made many mistakes and one of them was not buying birds from Jos Soontjens when I was there long way back.’ In those days William Geerts was the terror of the province of Antwerp. I still remember William’s words then: “I have one problem. To prepare my birds for the Middle Distance races I have to participate in short distance race from Noyon before and from that station Soontjens is unbeatable”. So to Soontjens I went and when I was there I asked him who his greatest competitor was.

Jos, who was not a bragger at all, said: “I have only one competitor, the wind.” Still I did not buy his birds since I was so naïve as to think they could only handle the Short Distance. Geerinckx however, who lived in the same town, was smarter than I was.

He imported Soontjens birds and shortly after he became a Champion at short distance, later on at Middle Distance and in recent years he is outstanding at the one-day races.

Total Disposal Sale – J&A CARRINGTON, SCF. TESTIMONIAL Winning is easy! All you need is good pigeons and a good flyer. That cliché is both simple and true. A very good example of that is the husband and wife team of Andrew and Jane Carrington. In a very short time Andrew and Jane have established themselves as a force within the SCF. In 2008 they won the SCF Combine Pointscore. In 2009 they really showed their potential by winning the Weekly Short Average and finishing 2nd overall. This is in a competition where one second can mean the difference between 1st or 3rd in the Fed. I will not bore you with results but will say that if anyone is interested in obtaining birds of the best quality available then this is your opportunity. Andrew has set out to excel in races up to 700km. In 2009 his Fed topping performance 3 weeks in a row is testament to the achievement of that goal. The birds that Andrew has have demonstrated the ability to repeat perform. I am sure if you study some of the performances detailed in the catalogue you will see evidence of this. One example is “Blush” – 5 times in the Fed top 20 (in one year) and winning the prized Towradgi Premier Stakes. There are many birds that proven their ability on the track – Bling, Blush, Cadel, Contador ...

Andrew has been fortunate enough to acquire some of the best birds available from Tom Wills. Tom‟s reputation of purchasing the very best needs no introduction or explanation. Not satisfied with that Andrew also did his “homework” and parted with more than a few dollars t o obtain some of the best Staff Van Reet‟s in the country.

An excellent example is “The Replacement Cock” purchased from Jason Stig. This bird has proved to be a gold mine for Andrew and a few others; both in the SCF and CCF. The combination of birds of such quality as these plus some of the best from top SCF flyers has seen the Carrington loft continually at the “pointy” end of the winners list each week.

It is unfortunate that these birds are being sold. I know personally that it is with deep regret, from both Andrew and Jane, that they have reluctantly decided that their personal circumstances will prevent them from racing in the foreseeable future. The opportunity to acquire pigeons that will perform and produce at this level rarely comes along. I do not lightly pass on my recommendation but can assure anyone interested in improving their loft performance then there are more than a few birds in this sale that will do that. The pedigree AND more importantly the results are on the board. I personally look for birds that come from a family of repeat performers. If it‟s in the genes then it has to come out in the young ones! There are many birds here that meet that criteria.

I wish both Andrew and Jane well in the future and would encourage anyone genuinely interested in improving their performance to have a look at what I believe to be are some of the best performing birds currently available.

Total Disposal Sale – J&A CARRINGTON, SCF. TESTIMONIAL I first met Andrew and Jane Carrington in 2006. They had just moved from Canberra to Wollongong and were looking to restart with pigeons. Stephen Saywell introduced Andrew to me and we have been friends ever since.

In the past few years they have had some super pigeons from me, „Number 9‟ and the red Andre van de Weil hen amongst them. In 2009 they were able to obtain significant pigeons from my sale including my Young Bird National winner and a daughter of the „Producer 7210‟.

2007 was their first season flying birds they had bred and they certainly showed what was to come. It must be remembered that they fly in the same club as arguably Australia‟s best fancier, a man with 60 plus years experience in the SCF who has won everything there is to win. I don‟t like to use Davo as a benchmark but I think in this case it is warranted. The Carrington‟s finished ahead of Davo in both 200 miles races (6th FED & 1st FED), both 250 mile races (2nd FED & 6th FED) and both 300 mile races (2nd FED & 3rd FED) that year and then stopped racing to strengthen their stock team. They finished 5th SCF FED Overall weekly average. Quite an effort if you think about it!

In 2008 they won the prestigious SCF Combine Pointscore by a huge margin gaining 91 pts with the next best flyer on 62 pts. They were also leading the FED weekly Long Distance Average until getting overtaken on the last race when again they chose to put their stock team first. Lots of character here ... not sacrificing their birds chasing a championship! They finished 2nd SCF FED Overall weekly average as well.

In 2009 the partnership decided to have a go at the sprints as they felt their trapping wasn‟t up to SCF standards in previous years (if you want to see unbelievable trapping go have a look at the top SCF guys ... it‟s an „art form‟ down there). The result 1st SCF FED Short Distance weekly average and 2nd SCF FED Overall weekly average again. You must remember this year they started racing with just 85 pigeons. Most other „contenders‟ had „sprint‟ teams that big!

Not to forget they equalled the record of three Fed wins in a row in 2009.

Andrew once said to me “we like to win but not to „beat‟ people. It can get a bit to serious, after all they are just pigeons”.

I‟ve followed Jane & Andrew‟s performances closely these past few years and I must admit I feel the best was still to come with them continuing to improve their team, their management and most importantly their local knowledge and experience ... sadly this is not to be.

In the season’s first race 5630’s son was 2nd FED so I put her back in the stock loft. 20951 went to the second race of the year (underdone due to time pressure) and we clocked her for 10th FED when she came high in a fast race and it took a while to get her down. The next week she came with our 1 st FED, the following week again she came with our 1st FED and to give us a ‘Triple Treat’ she did it again but was beaten onto the ETS by her daughter. I stopped her at this point. So a 2nd FED and 1st FED from the only two children tried from the Big Wattle Cock.
