Testimonial George Robert Bond. Born 24 / 6 / 1940 - Died 2 / 2 / 2009 George was also known as the Earl of Figtree and could best be described as a man of excesses. I, myself, worked for and alongside of George for the last five years, as his Loft Manager and during this time had the best 5 years of my working life. Every day whilst George was alive was an adventure, his supplying me not only with a job and an income, but as well, making sure that I was supplied with lunch each day. This generosity proved especially so on Race Days, for on arrival at the lofts, I would be greeted with breakfast, which George himself would cook. In over 50 years of keeping and racing pigeons, George spent a small fortune purchasing birds, so much so that even in his latter years when he knew he was terminally ill, he carried on purchasing new stock. Indeed so deep was his passion for pigeons, that during the last 5 years whilst I worked for him he spent over $700,000 acquiring new birds, from the likes of John Hansen, Keith Saggers, Ray Wesche, John Brislin and many others. This passion would find George in the lofts every night playing with his birds and this love lasted to the very end. George had little interest in competing for and winning sprint races, indeed in over 50 years of racing the only sprint races won were the first race of the 2005 and 2006 seasons, after I had joined him as loft manager. Indeed George detested races under 300km (180 miles) and considered the shorter races as educational trips ‘up the road.’ Placing more importance on doing that which ensured maximising the returns than on the winning, in these regards he was much like the late Bill McLean, who himself would not worry about timing in until reaching such distance and who always tried with his knowledge and expertise to maximise returns. Whilst racing with the South Coast federation (NSW) he managed to win, over the years, most of the major races conducted. Then managed later, to duplicate his South Coast successes when competing in the NRP and FRP federations (in fact winning the last ever race 712km held by the FRP, having the only bird on the day which was timed in at 6.12.22 in 2005 from Wonthaggi). My particular highlight of race wins with George. Winning the Welshpool Combine by 30 minutes with a favourite of rd George’s, a Top Hat Janssen Mealy Hen 03 1622. Who then ran 3 FRP National in 2005, gaining 10 cards so far, and only retired from racing after the difficult Cootamundra race held on 27/6/2009 as a six-year old. In his house are to be found over 60 trophies in the display case. His favourite, being the NRP Young Bird Derby trophy in 1997 (as displayed in the sale.) I draw attention, to the write-up in the Racing Pigeon Journal vol.17 No 3 March 2009 written by his good and long time friend Kevin Pearson. Who summed up George, the type of person and flyer he was, far better than I could. George made it a point to purchase from the best flyers around Australia and, with the relaxation of importation laws also purchased from overseas. So that at the time of his death, birds from many of the best strains known, are to be found amongst the many owned. Amongst his later purchases are birds from the following 8 pairs imported directly from Silver Toye for $50,000 who stayed with George for three weeks in 2001 these are hard day and long distance birds. 15 pairs from B & L Shoobridge (an acknowledged top SFC flyer) which were related to Graham Davison’s Pommie Blues and which George called his Davo’s Dordins of which BB Pie H SCF 97 15611’s influence continues to this day. Johnny Cassa 27birds from his long distance Grondalears included amongst these both the 400 & 500 mile winners. Van Cutsems obtained from myself and which are line bred from birds obtained in 1977 – 1982 directly from the late Ray Holden. John Brislin (Victoria) and these include Dordins / Wickhams / Der Werrets / Gaby Vandenabeele (considered by many to be some of the best Janssens brought into the country) / Goodgers / Houbens. Note. Unfortunately George passed away before it was possible to properly evaluate these birds and since then, the entire stock of birds & lofts of John Brislin were destroyed in the bush fires of Black Saturday 2009. 10 Top Hat Janssens from Blenhaven stud and the best bird in the loft was bred from these Mealy H IHPS 03 1622 (lot 2). 40 birds from Keith Grono in 2007. 15 birds from Ray Wesche in 2007 Pencils / Janssens / Van Loons from Grenville Evans (Melbourne) / Appleby’s / John Pryor’s Deewerdts. To name just a few of the bloodlines purchased and owned. During my five years with George I was amazed at the money George spent on purchasing the best birds available, which he continued doing till the end. This is a genuine chance to obtain both ‘stock and young’ from the best. In closing, I suggest pigeon racing lost one of the true characters forming part and parcel of this great sport.
Colin Warwick
George Bond & His Birds George as mentioned above, spent thousands of dollars on the best birds that money could buy. Yet at the conclusion of each race season he would sell all the race birds still in the lofts, so that he could concentrate on his yearlings for the next race season. A practice I found quite perplexing, considering that when racing with the Central Cumberland Federation (CCF), most flyers only do well with older pigeons in the first few races, this is mainly because often the birds will, on liberation, split-up into several groups / batches before leaving the point. However that was George’s way and whilst racing with the NRP and FRP, such a system, proved to have several advantages. However, whilst racing with the CCF, with the closing of both the FRP and NRP federations and amid the mass chaos eventuating at the race point, a change to the system was required. This need for change and the wisdom of retaining older birds was to take several years of persuasion before George agreed to such a modification of his basic system.
