Family History In 1941 Doug Ince commenced racing and one pigeon took out 4 club races and gained 2nd, 7th and 9th Federation. In 1944, flying with the Ivanhoe club, Doug achieved in 9 consecutive races, 8 X 1sts and one 3rd placing. At the time he was 15 years of age and competing against prominent and experienced flyers. So the scene was set and his passion for improving the strain began. He was inspired by the old English strains flying 500 and 600 miles. He could not see why birds in Melbourne could not achieve the same. There was great scepticism by many of the leading fanciers of the day as they did not believe that flying 600 miles could be achieved. What followed was 60 years of dedication, disappointment, joy and amazement as the family evolved into what it is today.

An overview of the performance of this strain of pigeons is that by the end of 1999, this family had won 1st place in over a hundred Open and Federation races and thousands of open Federation Positions. The basis of this great family was a blending of the old Harrison, family with the Putman, Jurion Delaney, Weilman and Lang Millar. A key pigeon at this time was a Harrison cock a blue chequer VHA-50-7163. This pigeon was the sire of “The Champ” VHA-57 18526. In 1958 “The Champ “ competed in 8 Young Bird and Old Bird Races and was clocked in 7 of them to gain 23rd Open Fed 150 miles, 21st 150 miles, 15th Fed 150 miles and 6th Fed 230 miles. “The Champ” was to become as dominant as any pigeon in the strain as he was responsible for directly breeding the famous “Unrung Hens” as well as being Grandsire of John Yates “Mildura Fed Winner”.

The Mildura Fed winner was Grandmother to three 500 miles Fed winners and two second place 500 mile Fed birds, and numerous others.

This line extends through to Gravel Eye 1, Gravel Eye 2 and Gravel Eye 3, Emmelle, The Crosbie Hen, the Ash Cock, The Hilton Hen, the Soapy Eyes, The Silks, the Mean Eyes, Everest and many others. At the same time he was developing the Harrison side of the family Doug was utilising the progeny of a Jurion cock of Sid Moore VHA-50 –7164 and its offspring 4th Cobar and the Giant that he purchased. The Giant was mated to the Bourke Hen of Bob Eaton, which was O’Brien, Harrison, and Delaney. This bred the “Odd Eye Cock.” Doug mated this to the“Red Frill”. This in turn bred “Trio “, and the Red Pied cocks that played a major role in John Yates and Bob Eaton birds. Doug was looking for an intermediary between these two lines and bought a hen that was to become known as the Dubbo Hen (VHA 55-18875). She was mainly the old Putman family. When mated to a Wielman Cock of Reg Stock it produced “North Pride” VHA-62- 22817 winner of the 1963 600 miles race. He then mated the Dubbo hen to a son of the 4th Cobar hen and

this Produced “Nomad” Nomad was then mated to a Pied Cock, which produced “Bookaloo VHA-63-12166.” 1st 600 miles in 1964.

Two years later Bookaloo was mated to a cock that took out 1st 300 and this pair produced “Wendy VHA-65-6325 that won 1st 600 mile in 1966.In 4 years Doug had won 3 x 600-mile races. This blending basically dominated the family during the 60’s and 70’s.

Not until the “Hunch Pair “ (BBC 78 29532 & BCH 75-38216) were introduced in the late 70’s did any other pigeons make a significant impact on the family. This pair both predominantly Harrison pigeons from two different fanciers with a touch of the Bookaloo through the cock. The first time he mated them up he produced the Bird of the Year (VHA-11067). Dip 2nd 500 miles and Double Dip her daughter, which was 1st Fed 300 and 1st Fed 500 for Godfrey Stevens in the same year in the VHA, are descendants of this pair. As an aside Double Dip would have also been highly placed in a 400 as she landed with three other birds only to be missed being clocked.

The Hunch Pair descendants have won at every distance race at Federation level in Melbourne as well as the 700-mile races. The intermediary had worked and the basis of this winning long distance family of Long distance pigeons started to evolve. It is also important to note that John Yates started his family based solely on Doug’s pigeons and as a young boy obtained pigeons from Doug that took him on to a fantastic record of 4 x 1st 500 miles in the VHA as well as numerous wins from 300 miles right through to 700 miles.

Godfrey Stevens bought out most of Doug’s stock in the 70’s and almost overnight turned in some fantastic performances. He has dominated distance racing in Melbourne ever since and with his resources has developed the family to a new level. Over the years Doug John , Godfrey exchanged pigeons to develop this family further with great success

She is grand dam of 1st 700 mile, 1st 700 mile, 2nd 700 mile ,2nd 700 mile, 2nd 700 mile, 3rd 700 mile, 4th 700 mile,1st 600 mile ,15th 500 miles( Bred 1st 600 mile). etc. etc

The Dam VHA-82-42476. Clocked by Doug Ince at 600 miles. Her Dam is VHA-81-41621 Emmelle 1st Fed 500 for Doug, 4360 birds only 5 on the day. This again was an extraordinary performance as she was well in front of the other pigeons, as Doug could not trap her. As you can see from the number of birds this was no small time race, and it is typical of the classic races that this family shines in.

Emmelle was off Gravel Eye 3 VHA-78-22362 which is off Gravel Eye 2 mated to 1st 700 VHA-73-15754. Gravel Eye 2 is off Gravel Eye 1 mated to the sister of VHA-73-15754.

Gravel Eye 1 is sire of 6th 300, 27th 500 14th 500.

Gravel Eye 2 is sire of 1st 280, 3rd 300, 7th 700, 9th 700, 30th 600 and many more.

Emmelle’s dam was off the sire of 1st 700 mated to J.Burns 1st Fed Broken Hill 1977. The Sire of the Crosbie was VHA-80-7909. This cock was off VHA-77-11480 BCC which is bred off VHA- 71-39632 1st Coonamble 500 when mated to VHA-76-41239 1st Fed Fowlers Gap. The Fowler’s Gap winner was bred off a Red Ch Cock clocked 7 times. This cock was bred off a Brother to Trio mated to the Mildura Fed winner, which was a grand daughter of the Champ. The Coonamble winner was also bred down from the Champ. Both these pigeons were bred by John Yates . 7909 dam was off a big blue bar hen bred off VHA75-2311 The Power Hen dam of 7th Fed 700,30th Fed 600, 7th Fed 440 and a cock known as the Gabba .

The Powder hen was a daughter of Trio. As you can see Trio and the Gravel Eye pigeons are very dominant, Interestingly, Trio and Gravel Eye had the same Grandfather.

In 6 generations these winners are in the direct line of pedigree. 1st 450m, 1st 500m, 1st 500m, 1st 500m, 1st 700m, 1st 700m .This simply highlights the technique of putting winning pigeons from the family directly back into the family. The Crosbie hen has been

responsible as Dam, Grand Dam and Great Grand Dam of many of Godfrey’s clock pigeons at 500,600 and 700 miles. Some of the results have been the following.

She is dam of (a) 1930: Bred 3rd 700 miles & 9th 350 miles and also bred the sire of 11th 500 and the dam of 5th 700. (b) 1712: which was 8th Fed 350 and should have been 14th Fed 300 but for Godfrey’s clock being mistakenly opened at the club. ( Incidentally this cost him the VHA old Bird aggregate in 1991. ) (c ) 1625: Bred Norm Douglas a Fed Winner. (d) Everest: Which is dam of 21st 350 mile ( Sire Of 6th 600), 1st 700 mile, 2nd 700 miles.

(Same year ) (e) Sister to Everest which bred 2nd 700 in 2001. (f) 12126: Sire of 14th 600m, 22nd 600m ,15th 450m. (g) 20930 : Which bred 2nd 700m. (h) 13334: Which bred 4th 700m. (i) 4301: Which bred 1st 600 miles,15th 500 miles, 9th 300 miles, 19th 300 miles.

When she was mated to Gravel Eye 2 she bred the grand sire of K.Weeks 1st 500m.

Another cock of the paring bred the Ash Cock which in turn bred the Hilton Hen which bred 5 Fed positions and has been a key producer for Doug. Her great grand children that have performed are too numerous to mention but include 11th 500, 16th 500, 5th 700, 8th 600, 20th 500, 9th 700, 30th 500, 3rd 700, 6th 300.

4. JAYDEE ( Line Bred through the Hunch pair) 1st National 500m over 6000 birds Sire:

Flew 2 X 700 mile race. Bred 3 Hens that flew 700 miles. One of these hens flew the 800 mile race in 2000. The dam of this cock was a sister to 2nd Fed produce 350m beaten by decimals in a very hard race. She was off a BCPC VHA 83 39317 a grand son of Trio and VHA- 82-42528 a blue ch pied hen, a daughter off Bigfoot which is direct off the Hunch pair and a brother to Bird Of The Year and the Taiwan cock sire of 1st 450miles.

A brother to Big Foot bred 1st 700 & 2nd 300 for John Yates and is in the breeding of J.Peels 1st 700 in 2001. Sire of Eileen half sister to Jaydee. She was 6th Open 700 & flew 800 miles.

Dam VHA-97-16340 “Going Again” Flew 4 X 700 miles, placed in 3. Sire is a brother to Double Dip 1st 300m,1st 500m. He was bred off VHA-86-16731. A Sister was 10th 700 who was dam of 21st Fed 600m and 24th 600m. His brother VHA-84-1734 bred 6th 600 and 21st 500. He was off Dip 2nd Fed 500 only two birds on the day 2845 birds.

The sire of Dip is VHA-87-2850, which is off the Taiwan Cock and 1st 450 m. The dam of Dip was VHA-87-35673 known as the National hen 22nd Fed 400, 25th National 12156 birds competing. She was also off the Taiwan cock and the 10th Fed 500 hen.

The dam of “Going Again” was the Wyandra Hen flown 2 X700 in same , both head wind races, and dam of three sisters (including Going Again) who all flew 700 miles. One was clocked 9 times. The Wyandra hen was off BCC –86-16770 1st Fed 450 that was off the Taiwan Cock. Her dam was a Blue Ch hen VHA -85-37280. She was a grand dam of Jenny which flew two 700 miles and was 6th Fed 700 and 6th Fed 200 (7900 birds). She in turn bred the Eureka pigeons , 4th Fed 700, 3rd Fed 700, 5th Fed 700.

Over the years Doug swapped pigeons with John Yates, Godfrey Stevens and others who possessed his bloodlines. Since 2005 due to his illness he was helped by John Yates as Doug was not able to spend the time with his pigeons that was required to remain competitive. Through the hard work of John and quite a few other fanciers, Doug was able to test his pigeons at the distance. During those few years Doug and John took out    

14th & 17th National Cobar 400 miles, & 22nd Narromine 400 miles.

2nd , 13th,18th, 19th, 21st, 26th & 28th 500 miles.

2nd , 2nd, 3rd, 3rd , 7th, 15th, 21st & 30th 600 miles.

6th,7th, 11th & 20th 700 miles

Many of these races were very hard races. With the exception of one pigeon these birds were all bred down from Doug’s bloodlines.

Doug bought quite a few pigeons from Godfrey Stevens, particularly over the last 10 years to build the family. These were all outstanding bloodlines through the best performed of Godfrey’s pigeons. Many of these birds are in the sale as well.

Please Note Every effort has been made to verify the breeding of the pigeons. Unfortunately Doug’s records in later years were not as meticulous as they were early in his career.

This was particularly so as he became sicker over the last 5 years. The proceeds of the sale will go to Doug’s children. Thanks must go to those friends of Doug for putting this sale together.
