After 14 years racing in the Victorian Homing Association in Melbourne, in May this year I will be moving to Queensland to live on the Sunshine Coast. This move was always planned, but has been brought forward 12 months due to some restructuring of my business activities. Initially I will be living in a townhouse until I build a new home mid to late 2008, and it will be some time before I have the opportunity to resume racing pigeons. For this reason I will be offering all my stock pigeons and the birds bred for racing in 2007. These birds have been graded for quality, in addition to losing a number around the roof, as I continued to allow them to exercise and bathe. Included in the sale are 25 birds placed in Federation races against the highest quality, 11 of them at distances of 750km or more. There are also at least 30 birds that have bred birds to perform at the elite Federation level. Leading this brigade are the parents of “Favourite” the VHA 2002 Bird of the Year for Lu Ping. Stock offered will include line bred birds from the late South Australian champion Roy Dangerfield, winner of the SAHPA points when aged in his 80’s. Also the exceptional Janssens of Grenville Evans that have crossed extremely well with the Dangerfield birds, and continued to breed down for me. I also purchased Lot 71 at the Lu Ping sale, the sire of the 2002 VHA Bird of the Year. This line has also proven a successful cross with the Dangerfield’s. Lot 71 contains the Casaert line, which is responsible for several VHA Fed winners to 850 km. In the past two years I have sought more South Australian birds with recent additions including grizzles from SA legend Alan Brown. Alan Brown won 16 SAHPA races before privately disposing of his birds in June last year. I was fortunate to be with Greg Hamilton when he was purchasing many of the top Federation birds and I selected 2 pair. I also purchased some impressive stock from the now dissolved partnership of Buxton & Snyder – who turned in some wonderful results in 2003 and 2004 to be 14th and 5th SAHPA aggregate. These purchases also included 2 grizzles. Locally I recently purchased some wonderful birds from Peter Ainsworth, Iurato & Denato, and Frank Danko. These latter stock birds have not been tested in my loft. Racing Pigeons has always been a hobby for me and taken second place to business and family. Additionally, I have always been limited in the time spent with the birds as a result of being a chronic sufferer of Pigeon Fanciers Lung for almost three decades – leading me to becoming the master of short cuts in their management process. Rarely has a season gone by when I have not spent up to four weeks travelling overseas in the middle of the racing season, and few weeks go by when I am not travelling and staying interstate for business. In the years that I have been available for the full season I have managed some respectable results, including finishing in the top 20 VHA aggregate and distance aggregate several times. I must at this stage thank Gary Church for all his patience and assistance in ensuring the care of my pigeons during my many absences.
In the 4 seasons from 1999 that I have not travelled overseas during the middle of the race season I have taken the following Aggregate positions 2006 -17th VHA long distance aggregate – 6 Fed positions. 2005 - 10th VHA Old Bird aggregate – 6 Fed positions - 7th VHA sprint series - 17th VHA long distance aggregate The highlight of the season was winning 1st Federation Parkes (3) at 1137mpm 2002 -13th VHA Old Bird aggregate – 7 Fed positions 1999 - 7th VHA Old Bird aggregate – 7 Fed positions 2003 – 5 Fed positions This is a great opportunity to purchase proven stock birds Roy Dangerfield. A former Port Adelaide ruckman, Roy Dangerfield was a leading flyer in the SAHPA and had completed 66 years of racing when ill health forced him to have a complete dispersal sale in 1994. Retirement definitely came when he was at his peak, despite being aged in his 80’s and football injuries preventing him from doing any work with his pigeons. With no tossing from the start of the racing seasons, he finished 1st in the SAHPA aggregate points in 1990, the following year he was 5th, and the season prior to his health issues he was 2nd. Roy was a master in preparing performed yearlings to go on and become triple association pigeons in their 2YO season. Roy recommenced racing with a small team containing his original bloodlines a few years after his sale and won 1st Assoc Farina 550km with a cock that was also placed 7th and 9th Assoc. Clearly a master fancier. The principal hen in his latter years was his “Mt Willoughby Hen”, 2nd SAHPA Mt Willoughby 876km, and a granddaughter of the “Elliot Hen” of Alan Goodger. It could be argued the “Mt Willoughby Hen” was one of the most influential pigeons to have graced a stock loft in Australia. In the 1992 season she was responsible for every Association placing for Roy and all 10 club wins in the Hampstead Club. Roy is also accredited with racing South Australia’s greatest pigeon. This incredible grizzle hen was SAHPA Bird of the Year in 1990, winning 5th Assoc, 3rd Assoc, and 4th Assoc Gilgandra 1000km. Little wonder he is a prominent member of the SAHPA Hall of Fame. The principle Dangerfield pigeons I owned were: Ref A: SA 95 02819 - A son of the Mt Willoughby hen when mated to a cock from his Grizzle line that was a prolific producer of Assoc placed birds, including 1st SAHPA Cooper Pedy 740km. 02819 has been a dominant producer for me and is sire and grandsire of 12 VHA Fed places at distances over 800km, along with a host of Fed placings at shorter distances. He is grandsire of the Parkes fed winner. This cock will be on display but he is no longer filling his eggs.
Ref B: SA 90-22517 – This hen was a brilliant race hen, winning 3rd SAHPA Inglewood 510km, 2nd Assoc Booroorban 561km, and 2nd Assoc Temora 818km. Her sire was SA 89 -16903, a dominant producing son of the “Mt Willoughby Hen” when she was mated to the cock that produced the champion Grizzle hen. 16903 followed in his sire’s footsteps to breed the 1991 SAHPA Bird of the Year. I only managed to breed 4 youngsters from 22517 before this hen stopped laying when 4YO, fortunately keeping a hen and cock for stock. Ref C: SA 90 – 22552 – This hen won 1st and 16th Assoc Booroorban 561km, and 28th Assoc Temora 817km. Typically this hen bred very few decent race birds, but fortunately I kept a number of birds from her that became very good stock birds/ Ref D: SA 91 – 14857 – This cock was nest mate to the 1991 SAHPA Bird of the Year. His sire was also SA 89 – 16903 (see Ref B) and his dam was Grant Patterson’s Temora Assoc winner, which in turn was also a triple Assoc pigeon, also taking 20th Benalla and 21st Mitiamo. Ref E: VHA 94 18960 – Has been an absolute goldmine, breeding Fed birds with many cocks. When mated to Ref A the progeny have continued to produce quality race and stock pigeons, including the double Fed hen raced by T & D Groves which bred several Fed birds for Colin Cox and George Vella first season in stock 18960 is from Ref D SA 91 14857 and his half sister Ref B SA 90-22517. Ref F: SA 90 22590 - Grizzle cock. He was a son of the champion grizzle hen when she was mated to a son of the Mt Willoughby Hen. This cock bred many club winners but unfortunately I had given him away when his daughter won 6th Fed 820km as a 2YO in 1999. Ref G: VHA 96-3272. By Ref A when mated to daughter of Ref C.
