INTRODUCTION Pigeons and pigeon racing is my life, but when my good wife fell in love with caravanning in the north of Western Australia, escaping the winter into some of the best fishing found anywhere on the globe, a then wishful thinking one-off exercise, or maybe even two, has now turned into a permanent fixture and is entering its fourth year. I originally had to downsize the birds so they could be managed in our absence and that was difficult. Even worse, the cosy arrangement to have the birds looked after at home for some four months at a time is now coming to an end. Compounding this is the advent of a new house constructed on a postage-stamp size subdivided block (323m2) adjoining my side boundary fence, with its miniature outdoor entertainment area backing onto my race loft, to within 1.2 metres, renders the loft illegal, by Local Law, and forces me to act now, before I run into trouble. If it couldn‟t get any worse, I have accumulated unraced three-year olds that have never been paired and they deserve a life that I cannot give them. So why Sydney? Well, it could have been Adelaide, Melbourne or Brisbane, but I am hoping to do better in Sydney and additionally the Liverpool Sale Centre specialises in these matters so it makes sense.

Why not WA? The first reason is obvious, but just as important I do not want these birds to find their way home in the future. It hurts me as much as it hurts them when they return and cannot stay and this has happened to me in the past and is the last thing I want for them.

Quite truthfully, I am far from ready to quit pigeons, therefore this will be a one-off opportunity to purchase, arguably, some of the best birds I have ever owned. I am keeping a nucleus to start again, if and when the occasion arises, but only enough so they can be agisted while I am away from home. Those being kept, where practical, have been paired this last season and their youngsters will be in the sale to make a full cross-section available.

A few other barren and over-age birds have also been kept back.

Historically, best in Federation upwards of twenty-two times, including Zanthus „100‟ Combine, 725kms and Coral Bay Fed 1,000kms, plus countless Federation places; a Federation record 43 club wins in 5 seasons was a highlight of the 1970‟s, eclipsing the previous record holder and WA icon, the late Jack Burge, and including top ten places in the Flyer of the Year competition against the likes of WA legend Harry Lague. Finishing 2, 3, 4, 4, 5 Federation Flyer of the Year against top flyer Brian Ewen, Mac Caporn and others in the late 1980‟s to early 1990‟s accompanied by 1st, 2nd, 4th, 4th, 5th, 5th, etc places at Federation level at the classic 600 miler in a seven year good patch against two-hundred odd members and only eclipsed by a PRF Life Membership award in the late 1990‟s, after an Page 3 of 44

accumulative twenty-three years service at Federation level, certainly signifies a pretty good innings, but I am not ready to walk away yet and it is true you are only as good as your last win and you need another soon or you will be well and truly forgotten. Times have changed... substantially. Nobody, forty years ago, in my club, which was one, if not the toughest club in the Federation, could lay claim to eighteen (18) wins and five (5) seconds from twenty-eight (28) starts and twelve (12) times all pools, including numerous times best entire inland region, but it actually happened for me during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. In the historical context it is unbelievable! It is fair to say that these modern birds, up against the old Australian pigeons, at the short to middle distance, would have given the old timers a great shock and much to contemplate. Thirty and forty years ago the comments would have been less than complimentary and I was around then to know. I can hear them now, better still I can see the sceptical looks on their faces on telling them at clock strike-off that I had twelve, then nine, then ten in consecutive weeks to drop in quick succession up to fifteen minutes in front of the rest of the club to win (and not all Soontjen too) but thanks to solid evidence arising from electronic timing and good club mates, as witnesses, it is true! In fact, no less than sixty-eight birds figured in those eighteen (18) wins including a collective ten (10) to win the Club Young Bird Derby‟s of 2006 and 2007! The club pays for the derby winner‟s photo to go up on the club house wall, but which ones should be left out? One needs to visualise that in the past twenty years and especially since the discontinuance of the eastern line of flight and the rapid build up along the coastal corridor (and flying away from the coast northwards) the inland region became a dead area, especially at the short to middle distance. One has to cultivate very smart, switched-on, thinking pigeons to break from the main drag, once they hit the coast, some twenty kilometres away and these birds were doing it week after week and were highly competitive, even from a very poor loft position. It is to their credit, as the record shows, that these birds often came well within a “bull‟s roar” of the “competition” and I use the inverted comma‟s on the word competition deliberately. It is anyone‟s guess what they would have achieved, if based anywhere near the main flight path – it would have been sensational! Yes, the inequality of pigeon racing; times have changed from thirty and forty years ago, across the board, and nobody could do then what is being done today. We live in different times and most definitely to live in the past is futile. Consequently, I retain a cross section of birds based on modern winners, mostly sprinters, and I value very highly the five Janssen birds that John Hofman, ex Ponderosa, Australia, selected for me over several years, which are good to 800 kilometres and I remain in regular contact with him and some of the birds, sourced from John, and their offspring, will be in the sale and I must say I have never been able to fault them – they have done a magnificent job! I have always been on the lookout for good pigeons and what pigeon fancier hasn‟t? Accordingly, I never put all my eggs in the one basket and this sale will show a working loft, not a stud, with performance being the prime criteria and this catalogue properly sets out the prizes won, the race stations flown and including the distance and date of each event. I have Janssen, Wildemeersch, Vandenabeele, Busschaert, Van Loon and other combinations; anything that can race out of the ordinary, but I cannot begin to describe the Allan Brown (San Remo, Riviera Lofts) Soontjen – they are not all worldbeaters, far from it, and I only had two seasons with them, but collectively they turned my head – big time! No wonder they set the European and UK short to middle distance scene alight. I purchased twelve Soontjen youngsters and three Rene DeMan off Allan Brown to race in 2004 and when he sold the bulk of his Soontjen and Rene DeMan in Sydney and based on what was already performing for me, I purchased their parents and a full cross section of these birds are in the sale and I can safely say there are no better Soontjen Page 4 of 44

anywhere in Australia. These are “bread and butter” pigeons that excel at the short to middle distance out to 500 kilometres and generally represent two-thirds of most race programs.

They are highly inbred as a result of coming together from disaggregated sources (Pros Roosen, Roger Persoons and the Herbots Bros) who individually kept them pure and they make for ideal crosses into most European strains, particularly the Soontjen-friendly Janssen and Vandenabeele. Just look up, for example, Gary Daykin “The Magician” (G.S. Daykin & Son) East Midlands, UK, and the performance of his Soontjen, which are virtually identical to my number one pair, and when he later crossed them with the Myrtle Loft Vandenabeele to step up the distance, the Soontjen continued to dominate the type. I eventually condensed my Soontjen and a Rene DeMan down to a couple of pairs, which consistently bred me exceptional pigeons, including when crossed. One of the hallmarks of these pairs and now extends to their offspring is eleven primary flights, often in both wings - a harmless feature, but a visual reminder that the blood is still working. Many Soontjen are blue barred, but the key “Geschelpt Verherstraeten” Hen (Belg.81.6688022) was a chequer and my number one hen (FSTR.98.2733) who traces directly back to her is also a chequer and therefore chequer appears regularly in my branch of the Soontjen. For Soontjen connoisseurs, one look at the pedigrees, at the rear of this catalogue, will show these birds are fixed on the base pigeons of Jos Soontjen. Through heavy inbreeding (which has not hurt them at all) the genes are almost anchored in place – the famous “Tom” and his original mate “Blauwe de Wolf” and their equally famous son “Late Tom” and his brother “De Geschifte” (22x1st); then there is the jewel in the crown, the “Geschelpt Verherstraeten” Hen, (Belg.81.6688022) runs through a huge cross section of the Soontjen family and it is more than a coincidence of performance that my number one pair closely focuses on the half brothers, the “Computers I and II” – champions in their own right and please note the commentary, with express courtesy of Jo Herbots of Dungelstraat, Halle Booienhoven, Belgium, on the “Computer‟s” at the rear of this catalogue. Then there is the “Van der Peer” Hen, when paired with “Tom” gave “Blue Jan” (16x1st) and immediately down from him “Flashy Jan”, dam and granddam of a multitude of winners. The famous “Computer I” (9x1st) through his mother the “Geschelpt Verherstraeten” Hen Belg.81.6688022 is full brother to “Rambo” (13x1st) “Blue Thunder” (12x1st) “Blue 501” (8x1st) “Advocaat” (8x1st) “The 501” (8x1st) “The 906/86” (3x1) “Supervliegmachien” (7x1st) plus 6723031, unraced and a source for the Frank Sheader pigeons. Jos Soontjen was an extremely successful sprint flier and in a five year period won some eighty-one races, within his local competition of Wommelgem, Belgium, against 700 to 800 birds per week and a vast majority of these are directly out of the “Geschelpt Verherstraeten” Hen Belg.81.6688022.

Jos Soontjen‟s fame spread throughout Europe, UK and the Far East nearly as quick as his pigeons. These birds are highly intelligent; rarely, if ever, have I lost a Soontjen youngster off the box, often they will take days to work back, but they always seem to do it and the same applies, within their boundary of limitation, out to five-hundred kilometres (Gary Daykin reckons 400kms and Jo Herbots 600kms). They are not built, in the pure state, to go beyond five hundred kilometres, in my humble opinion and unfortunately, in the early days, I just had to push the envelope – to my everlasting regret. I lost some mighty pigeons by sending them too far – it was just like putting Usain Bault into a marathon! Remember, too, these birds will need to be acclimatised and preferably matured before putting them up to whatever is planned for them, particularly the younger birds bred for the sale – they come from a hot dry climate and environment change does take time to adjust.

Any one of these birds could have had a permanent home with me, under more favourable circumstances, but it is not to be. They represent the very best I can produce and all are well Page 5 of 44

recommended to the fancy. Nobody can guarantee good birds, but the least anyone should expect is that I have done my level best to have these birds fairly represent my reputation, which I value very highly. If further information surrounding my personal approach to pigeon standards is required, it may be gleaned from my carefully considered thoughts presented in the Jan-Feb, July and October 2010 editions of the Australian Racing Pigeon Journal (ARPJ). Fully documented Hawkeye pedigrees will be available to purchasers at the sale or later on request and I just want to wish those who undertake to give them a try all the very best and I would be keen to follow their progress. Leo Turley has enjoyed a brilliant hobbyist’s career within the Pigeon Racing fraternity and a lengthy association with Whatley Pigeon Racing Club (WPRC). I first met Leo in 1981 when I made the decision to become a new member of Mount Lawley Pigeon Racing Club (later renamed Whatley PRC) and as fate would have it, Leo had simultaneously decided to return after some absence. This simple meeting was the catalyst for what would become a wonderful friendship and co-interest in all aspects of pigeon racing, spanning many years.

I have always been impressed by Leo’s meticulous approach to recording and cataloguing data about his pigeons. Information about pedigree, breeding, race participation, competition wins and so on for every pigeon in Leo’s lofts is available at a moment’s notice.

An avid believer in best practise, Leo has always embraced new technologies designed to improve the sport of pigeon racing. To this end, he implemented the Unikon electronic clocking system that not only made the clocking in of race birds more efficient, but in fact allowed him to clock in multiple birds at the same time; a previously arduous task. I recall many race days when Leo clocked in as many as twelve birds simultaneously.

Equally impressive is Leo’s collection of stock and race birds, acquired over many years as gifts and purchases from legendary breeders such as Fred Thompson, Ray Nesbit and John Hofman. Leo’s extraordinary collection today includes notable pedigrees such as Janssen, Busschaert and Soontjen. In 2004 Leo acquired a small quantity of Jos Soontjen pigeons from Allan Brown of Riviera Lofts. Leo was immediately impressed by his new acquisition’s desire to fly and their ability to fly at full speed around his loft. He remarked that the stamina of these pigeons far surpassed that of his existing birds; often the Soontjen pigeons continued to fly for twenty or thirty minutes at full speed after his other birds had landed. So impressed with these Soontjen, was Leo that when the opportunity to purchase their parents arose in 2005, he did so without a moment’s Page 6 of 44

hesitation; a decision he never regretted. In 2006 Leo began racing his Soontjen pigeons with remarkable results. In this first year, he won a total of seven races, three of which were particularly successful with twelve, nine and seven birds (respectively) arriving simultaneously at the loft and well ahead of all other competing race birds. As president of Whatley PRC it is my responsibility to calculate each flyer’s results for a race, and I can vividly recall Leo’s disbelief each time the results were announced. The following year these same birds (now older and more experienced) were virtually impossible to beat and Leo effortlessly won a total of eleven races.

Regrettably, Leo retired from pigeon racing in 2008, but thankfully his legacy of striving for continued improvement has inspired many pigeon racing club members. Leo “raised the bar” by instilling in flyers the importance of and rewards gained through acquiring quality pigeons. Leo demonstrated firsthand how the “right birds”, coupled with enthusiasm from pigeon flyers, was the key to remaining competitive even when geographical location was an issue. In 2006 Leo gave me two blue cheque cocks (same as Lots 14, 26, 57, 58, 60) that had been bred from Soontjen (Ref.9) and Rene De Mann (Ref.10) birds, for which I will be forever grateful. At the same time, I purchased a red cheque cock bred from Soontjen (Ref.14) and Hofman Janssen (Ref.3) birds which raced competitively in the Telethon “one loft race” that same year. I subsequently paired these three pigeons with my own Busschaert and Janssen birds and in-doing-so enhanced my own race performance with birds that were multiple race winners and who consistently performed “out of order”. Last year Leo bred and gave me some late bred young birds that hatched in January of that year. These birds are included in the catalogue for winning performances during the 2010 race season. In particular, one eleven flight, Soontjen pigeon, IRPF.WHAT.09.10 (34280 Ref.7 x 34284 Ref. 8) was an equal top velocity winner in the Leeman 240km race of June 27, 2010. This pigeon arrived with a two year old WHAT 07 52 (Soontjen/Rene De Mann x Buss/Janssen); an equally exceptional bird.

Another young hen IRPF.WHAT.09.294 (Soontjen/ Vandenabeele/Janssen, a sister of pigeons in lots 1, 19, 28, 31 and 76 was a winner in the Cervantes 180km race of July 4, 2010 and an equal winner in the Port Denison 300 km race of July 24, 2010. Experience has shown me that birds bred from the three cock birds mentioned previously, tend to excel once they have matured into two and three year olds. Soontjen pigeons are genetically dominant and as such tend to pass on their physical characteristics from generation to generation, even when cross bred. This same genetic dominance is evident in their performance even after generations of breeding and cross breeding.

Leo Turley has enjoyed a remarkable association with pigeon racing and in particular, with Whatley Pigeon Racing Club and has left a legacy of “pursuing excellence” to pigeon flyers and pigeon enthusiasts alike. His collection of pedigree race and stock pigeons is second to none and any of his birds would enhance a flyer’s stock loft. An honest, highly-driven, hard working and intelligent man, Leo is a valued friend and competitor. It is a great honour to have been asked to write this testimonial and it is equally gratifying to have been associated with Leo Turley for the last thirty years. I encourage flyers everywhere, who wish to be more competitive in sprint and middle distance racing, to acquire pigeons in Leo’s auction; they are nothing short of outstanding.

SOONTJES , Wommelgem: A little fancier that became big in his environment by his superior results on pure speed; Quiévrain, Quiévrain and again Quiévrain. Every week again it were the Soontjes-pigeons that had to beat the Soontjes pigeons. These super results were also noticed by many masters of the sport. They knocked at the door of Jos Soontjes and in a very short time the name of “SOONTJES” became a true conception within the pigeon sport.

These intelligent pigeons grew out to become true cracks and super breeders. By names like Pros Roosen, Herbots Brothers .... Vlaeminck .... they soon became world-famous pigeons and they became collector items. Next the golden Soontjes-blood took care of many winners, even provincial and national winners but also national ace-pigeons (Magic Star of J. Koninckx – Kimi of Thibaut-Boons – Number 1 of Herbots Brothers.......). Besides there are also some Olympic pigeons like the Olympiad of P. Roosen, the world famous breeder, the “155” of the Herbots Brothers......, with Geerinckx in Wommelgem, the Soontjes-pigeons are at the base of the National Championships and a lot of titles.

In the nineties, the Total colony of Jos Soontjes was sold, many pigeons moved abroad but by the Herbots family and some other toppers, the golden blood got saved. Besides it is and will always remain the blood of winners which always takes care of the speed within the birds. These birds can make the difference in our fast competition!

The GOLDEN BASE OF SOONTJES : With these pigeons the name of SOONTJES became WORLDFAMOUS!!! The 6353162/75 “TOM” Soontjes, won 13x1,and paired to the“Het blauw De Wolf”, out of this pair, the children won first prizes, but they were even stronger to breed with! This pair would produce top-birds like: The Late Tom : 3x1 + 3 Prov. Orleans and The Geschifte : 22x1;Grandparents of Geschelpte Jan : 10x1; The Vetbol : 12x1; Greatgrandparents of the 155 Herbots Brothers – 10x1;Olympic cock and then father of N°1 – 1 Nat. Ace Middle Distance KBDB and a unique breeder (also grandfather of 1Nat. Bourges with M. Van Lint) etc....

The Late Tom 6796080/80 got paired to the Geschelpte Verherstraeten hen, the 6688022/81 and here we have a unique breeding pair. They became parents of : The Rambo : 13x1 + Olympic cock Katowich Poland; The Blue Thunder : 12x1; The Advocaat : 8x1; The 501: 8x1; The 906/86: 3x1; The Computer I, which won with Pros Roosen 9x1; The Late Tom also was father of Computer II , again a winner and a unique breeder which is at the base with Pros Roosen of The 1 Nat. Bourges; The Raket : 1 Nat. Ace BDS’87; The Computer II Junior – 7x1.

By Pros Roosen, the Soontjes-blood arrived with J. Koninckx, who won with his Magic Star, 1 Nat. Ace Middle Distance KBDB. Afterwards many other great fanciers arrived and so we have the famous Magna Carta hen of Jos Thoné, a jewel and super racing hen with 1 Ace S/Nat. and on mothers side also the blood of the Computer – golden basic pair Soontjes in its veins. Those that want to win – this is winners blood, super fast pigeons, which can hold this speed till 600 km !!!!!!

Pros Roosen and Soontjes : The Soontjes pigeons got their name thanks to the work of Pros Roosen. For many years Pros was a searcher and he got obsessed by the results of this speed fancier. That’s why Pros decided to go and visit Jos Soontjes. Pros found very nice pigeons with very soft feathers and which showed intelligence and very good to motivate. Already with the first boughts, Pros succeeded very well and soon about 200 direct Soontjes pigeons moved to Kermt. These speed-devils were very well tested in competition and they succeeded very well with their wonderful results! On the middle distance flights of the “Limburgse Gewestelijke” (280 till 400 km – and a competition of 1000 till 3000 pigeons ), they are almost unbeatable. Within his breeding strategy, Pros still tries to keep the string of the Soontjes pigeons as pure as possible! Pros Roosen became even more famous thanks to the Soontjes-pigeons, but if he didn’t go to Wommelgem, may be these birds didn’t become that famous. One of the first cracks of this Soontjes-dynasty was the Computer I : he became Ace B.D.S – Grandfather of the 1e Nat. Bourges , grandfather of the Olympic cock Gran Canaria , grandfather of the Magic Star 1e Nat. Ace KBDB ….... After the Computer I there was his half-brother Computer II. They both had the same father, the famous “ Late Tom “ . Computer I was a son of the Basic pair Jos Soontjes : “Late Tom” 80/6796080 x “Geschelpte Verherstraeten-hen”, 81/6688022, out of this couple Pros had about 15 descendants. “Computer II” collected 80 prizes, 56 per 10 and 13 x 1e – He became 1st Prov. Ace Short Distance KBDB Limburg ’89. The year before he ended up as 2nd Prov.Ace Short Distance KBDB ’88 . In the national championships Ace Short distance he ended up as 5th in 1989, they’re white blackbirds among the cracks. He had the same father as Computer I, but the mother here was the 6510285 / 84, chequered Soontjes hen, which moved later on to the colony of Jan Grondelaers. Some of the most important toppers show that the Computer II is the best of the best when we’re talking about speed-birds... The descendants of Computer II is almost unbelievable.

When we take a close look at the present top-birds, we notice that especially the grandchildren of the Computer II, have a certain capacity when we’re talking about top-prizes; First prizes and classifications per 100. And ….. all of this not only in Kermt , but also on other lofts where they have certain descendants of this cock.

NOTES 9.4.2011. Regretfully, since the catalogue was prepared and substantially printed in mid February, I have had to reassess the condition of three birds placed in the catalogue. Lots 25 and 92 were already notated as carrying scalp wounds and I had anticipated a full recovery, but looking at them now this is not going to happen. Similarly, Lot 20 has sustained an eye injury and collectively I am not happy in keeping these three birds in the sale. To keep faith I have replaced the three with birds from the small nucleus I intend to keep and are photographed below.
