We have been shortlisted for the 2025 HSJ Patient Safety Awards in the Patient Involvement in Safety category.

The shortlisting is recognition of the innovative programme ”Improving Dementia Care and Overall Experience for Patients and Their Families and Carers within the Hospital Setting.” he initiative, which began

with the ‘Hearing the Voice’ event in 2022,This led to significant improvements in patient care and satisfaction. The Trust has also has been shortlisted for the 2025 HSJ Patient Safety Awards in the Patient Safety Team of the Year category. This recognition celebrates our hospital’s transformation of clinical governance through the “Implementing a Collaborative and Coordinated Approach to Patient Safety” project.

By uniting previously siloed teams, 100 per cent Duty of Candour compliance has been achieved. The project has also improved learning from incidents, and strengthened patient involvement.

This innovative model is now inspiring NHS Trusts nationwide.

The dedicated nursing staff on Ward 37 have been recognised with a prestigious award following heartfelt praise from a grateful family. After caring for patient “Grandad Malc” over the past three weeks, the team were celebrated for their exceptional kindness and support. Special thanks were given to Marie and Abi, who stayed beyond their shifts to provide comfort during his final hours.

Their compassion, professionalism, and unwavering care went above and beyond expectations.

This recognition highlights the incredible impact of nursing teams who not only care for patients, but also support their families.

The Patient Experience Team has been praised for championing the new Young Carers Passport, inspired by Phoebe Sumption’s experience.

Phoebe, a young carer for her mum undergoing chemotherapy, raised concerns after being unable to accompany her mum to treatment.

Phoebe’s advocacy led to the creation of the passport, now embedded in hospital policy, ensuring young carers like Phoebe are recognised and supported.

The initiative marks a significant step in acknowledging the vital role young carers play and highlights the power of patient voices in shaping compassionate, inclusive healthcare.

The hospital commends all involved for driving this forward.

We’re delighted to share that Phoebe Sumption has been shortlisted in the Young Carer category for Barnsley’s 2025 Young Champions Awards following her outstanding advocacy at Barnsley Hospital.

The award honours those who put others first, whether caring for relatives or helping in care homes.

Phoebe’s initiative has made a lasting impact, highlighting the strength of young voices in shaping compassionate healthcare. Well done Phoebe.

Next week marks Learning Disability Week 2025, and we’re taking the opportunity to launch a new Universal Health Passport, supporting people with learning disabilities across both Primary and Acute care in Barnsley.

Acute Liaison Nurse Michelle Evans worked with many partner organisations to deliver this project

Developed by Barnsley Healthcare Federation in collaboration with Speak Up – Rotherham Learning Disability Advocacy Service, the passport replaces the ‘All About Me’ booklet, and is recognised across Primary and Acute care in Barnsley.

It uses ‘easy on the I’ images to improve health literacy through a single image language.

Richard Jenkins celebrated as one of HSJ’s “Top 50 Chief Executives”

We are thrilled to announce Dr Richard Jenkins, Joint Chief Executive of Barnsley and Rotherham NHS Foundation Trusts, has been honoured as one of the Top 50 Chief Executives by the Health Service Journal (HSJ).
