Welcometothismonth’sCharity EditionofProudNews

At the heart of Barnsley Hospital Charity lies a commitment to making a lasting difference this month we take a look at how you can help through leaving a gift in your will, celebrating our volunteers, and visiting our vibrant Charity Hub.

We showcase the many ways you can get involved, from lacing up for a run, joining our dragon boat crew, to ‘hitting a hole-inone’ for a cause at our golf day.

Your support powers everything we do, including vital work with patients presenting as homeless, offering compassion and care when it’s needed most.

Every step, stroke, and swing helps build brighter futures thank you for being part of our journey. Together, we make it happen.

Could you support Barnsley Hospital Charity with a gift in your Will?

Thanks to the gifts we receive in Wills we are able to go the extra mile in supporting our patients here at Barnsley Hospital. These donations are very important to us and enable us to fund research, develop new ways of working and purchase state of the art equipment.

All gifts enable us to make a difference. Whatever amount you choose to give, we pledge to use your donation so that it has the greatest impact for our patients and leaves a lasting legacy in your memory. We want everyone to be able to make a Will, that’s why we have partnered with expert Will writers, Octopus Legacy, who provide a quick and easy service where each Will is checked over by a legal expert.

Octopus Legacy also offers telephone and face to face Will writing services for those that would rather speak to a solicitor, to find out more and to book an appointment simply call the team on 020 4525 3605 and quote Barnsley Hospital Charity.

Barnsley Hospital Charity can support you in helping to make a difference for our patients.

Big-hearted medics have launched a bold new plan to help patients who come through A&E with nowhere to call home. Thanks to a brainwave from Consultant Teresa Broom and the team, with backing from Barnsley Hospital Charity and Barnsley Council, emergency staff are handing out lifesaving homeless rucksacks packed with essentials.

Consultant in Emergency Medicine Dr Liz Morris said; “Homelessness is a health emergency. Many patients die decades younger than the average person. We’re doing everything we can to help.”

The rucksacks are part of a wider push to offer wraparound care — including info packs and support from a multidisciplinary team of medics, mental health pros, housing staff and more. It’s a lifeline and it’s only just begun.

The bags contain essentials such as food and drink which is non-perishable, socks, hat and gloves and a blanket.

Learning Disability and Autisim Lead Nurse Michelle Evans approached the charity with a proposal to raise awareness of Autism.

Thanks to Michelle and her team all staff now have the chance to benefit from a wonderful initiative that enables healthcare staff to experience what ‘Autism’ might be like. Book your slot today Tuesday 17 June Wednesday 1 October

Michelle said: “The training has been developed to give neurotypical people an opportunity to enter the neurodiverse world and experience the sensory processing difficulties faced by people on the autism spectrum. Following the training many staff are surprised by how difficult the experience was and are committed to using their knowledge to improving the patient experience.”

JointheUltimateTeamChallenge

We are excited to be hosting our very first Dragon Boat race on 14 September 2025 at Manvers Lake. We have had teams take part in 2023 and 2024 but have not yet ran an event solely to benefit our patients and staff so this is a charity first for 2025! We want a representative group of teams competing for the trophy, having a laugh and raising vital funds. Family and friends can also sign up as part of your team.

Thanks to the following teams who have signed up so far; Gateway Plaza Trust Headquarters

Safeguarding Team Intensive Care Unit

Breast Care Unit

Barnsley Facilities Services

Tesco, Stairfoot

Ellie Etoile’s Burlesque Group
