WHAT IS HATE CRIME?

“…any criminal offence which may be real or perceived by the victim or anyone else to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards a person because of their protected characteristic(s)”

WHAT IS HATE CRIME?

Non-Strand Hate Crime

In addition to the five recognised strands –

If a victim or any person perceives that they are targeted due to another personal characteristic, we must record a hate crime / incident ‘Non Strand’.

Examples – Alternative Culture (i.e. Goth), Age, Misogyny, Misandry and others.

The same CVC will apply for these victims as other hate crime victims.

WHAT IS HATE CRIME?

Mate Crime

Mate Crime is an adopted term used by most forces to describe a situation where a person has been targeted by others due to their vulnerability.

The perpetrator will ‘befriend’ the victim often a victim can’t see through this fake friendship until it’s too late.

EXAMPLES OF HATE CRIME?

• Physical Violence

• Verbal Abuse

• Criminal Damage

• Graffiti

• Threats

• Arson

• Provide victims with support

WHY REPORT HATE CRIME?

• Identify which groups are being targeted

• Identify individuals of concern

• Identify location hotspots

• Help build an intelligence picture for the police

• Prevent tragedies

The story of Fiona Pilkington.

Fiona and her family, specifically her daughter who learning disabilities, were victims of persistent bullying and abuse by a group of teenagers for over a decade. The harassment became too much for Fiona, and she drove her and her daughter to a secluded lay-by, doused the car in petrol, and set it alight.

WHY IS HATE CRIME UNDERREPORTED?

• Fear

• Don’t believe anything can/will be done

• Past bad experiences/mistrust with the police

• Worried about repercussions

• Don’t know what's happened is a hate crime

• Just accept it

• Don’t know how to report
