Barnsley Platinum Champions! As part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the Royal Voluntary Service launched the Platinum Champions Awards for volunteers. These awards aimed to recognise volunteers from all corners of the United Kingdom and from a range of causes.
BARNSLEY ACTIVITY
Nominations for these awards happened back in April and were put forward to a judging panel, made up of volunteering experts, celebrity supporters and academics. Nominees were judged on their impact on the lives of others, their dedication to volunteering, and on how much they inspire those around them. From all the nominations, 490 Platinum Champions were selected across the whole of the UK, and we are pleased to say that five of those awarded were from Barnsley! Julie Brown, Paul Hilton, Ann Wroe, Beth Deakin and Peter Robertshaw were all awarded a Platinum Champion Award! A huge congratulations and very well deserved for all of them! We managed to catch up with two of the award winners, Beth and Peter, to have a chat about the experience. We start with Beth. Tell us a bit about yourself. My name is Beth Deakin, and I am 32 years old. I am a primary and secondary SEN teacher and Social Emotional and Mental Health practitioner, which means in term time, I am a very busy person! I am from the Dearne, currently living in Goldthorpe with my partner of 14 years, Jack and our very naughty Beagle Chris. I am very proud of my heritage and love where I live! Tell us about Project 14. I set up Project 14 (which is a community group) in 2017 after losing my best friend Ashley to suicide. He was my best friend from primary school, and he was more like my brother. His loss was unexpected and hit us all incredibly hard.
JULY 2022
We raised a lot of money for amazing mental health charities in the early days which made me think about how we could set up a group that fundraises, get people together and promote positive mental health and well-being that benefits our local area directly - some of the charities we fund raised for didn’t even have a regional office, never mind anything in Barnsley.
Barnsley Platinum Champions! We aim to fundraise, signpost and invest in our community. My best pal Thomas saw what I was starting to set up and supported me very early on. As a result of the love of the work we started and the social media platforms we set up, we were blessed to meet Gemma, who lives close to us and is a mental health practitioner and also helps us to run Project 14. The three of us run the group outside our full time jobs.
BARNSLEY ACTIVITY
What is your role there, and how long have you done it? I am the founder and chair of Project 14. I have run it for 5 years. What made you want to get involved? Honestly, I set up Project 14 just to help other people and to hopefully prevent others from feeling the grief I did when we lost Ashley. My mantra has always been if I can help one person, then it’s been a success. Hopefully we’ve done that! I couldn't bare the idea of people not finding the help they need! Had you volunteered before? As well as running Project 14, I am also one of the group facilitators of the support group SOBs (Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide). I went on the SoBs training just before the pandemic started and patiently waited to open the group for over a year! At last, I lead the first group in September 2021! We meet every month in Barnsley town centre and help those who have lost loved ones to suicide. What does volunteering mean to you? I know that volunteering has helped me through my grief for Ashley. I find it difficult to receive praise, as I know I benefit from helping others so much. One of the best remedies for my own mental health is to help my community - a place that makes me so proud to live. Sometimes, people find this hard to understand. But when the darkest moment of my life happened, when it felt like it would never get bright again, my community was there. That’s why I know Project 14 needs to be there. How did you find out that you had won the Platinum Champion Award? I was driving home from work when Darryl from the Dearne Area team rang me. He told me that he had nominated me a few months before, and he had received an email confirming I was one of the 400 winners selected across the country out of thousands nominated. At first, I couldn’t understand why I had won it! I didn’t feel worthy! But I think that was just the surprise of winning. What an amazing way to be acknowledged!

Barnsley Platinum Champions!
BARNSLEY ACTIVITY
What did you get for the award? I was entered in to multiple ballots to attend different events across the jubilee (meeting Prince of Wales, picnics, party at the palace). I then had to wait to see if I was drawn out for any of the events. I didn’t expect to get drawn out, but I was! I was given tickets to got to the Party at the Palace that was on the TV. What has it been like since? Lots of people have congratulated me and asked about the award. I was going to keep it a secret, but my parents and Tom and Gemma put it on our social media feeds. It’s been really lovely to feel the appreciation - maybe I just need to learn to accept it better! You got to go to the party at the Palace, how was that experience? It was an amazing event! Gemma and I travelled down to London and the buzz was incredible. You could feel that the historic events were happening, and you were one of a lucky few attending. It was quite surreal being enclosed in the concert grounds, looking back and seeing the Mall full of people! Plus, being so close to the Royal family! What was the best bit? I loved Alicia Keys, Diana Ross and Andrea Bocelli! The show was a mixture of acts, which was brill! And the lights on the palace were just amazing!! We are sure you can see why Beth is a well deserved winner! To find out more about the amazing work Beth and Project 14 do, you can visit their Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/Project14DV

We became a charitable incorporated organisation in February 2020, and we are currently 100% led by volunteers. What is your role there, and how long have you done it? I am the founder and chairperson of H.O.P.E in Community, and I also manage the business development side of the charity. I have been involved in H.O.P.E in Community since day one in September 2017. I have also managed a youth club since 2013. What made you want to get involved? During my childhood and my previous marriage, I suffered from abuse and wanted to provide safe places for individuals to feel safe and supported and to get people who struggle, to be involved in their community. Had you volunteered before? Yes, I started volunteering where I was 12 years old in a school holiday scheme as a junior youth worker, as my dream always was to be a youth worker. I have had many roles since as admin support, street pastors, children and youth work, mobility shop, retail, committees and much more.
JULY 2022
What does volunteering mean to you? Volunteering is my lifeline. It makes me feel able to help others, give to my community and develop myself. It means that I can support those who are struggling no matter of the circumstances and it helps to maintain a good mental wellbeing.
Barnsley Platinum Champions!
BARNSLEY ACTIVITY
How did you find out that you had won the Platinum Champion award? I was nominated by one of my volunteers, Jenna Bishop, with support from Craig Aubrey from the Central Area Team. On the 16 May, Craig received an email stating “your nomination for a platinum champion has been chosen!”. I was one of the 490 platinum champions out of over 3,000 nominations and in addition to that I was picked by the expert panel of judges as one of the 70 most outstanding Platinum Champions, which gave me two tickets to the Platinum Party at the Place, and two tickets for the Eden Projects Big Jubilee Lunch in London. What did you get for the award? As well as the tickets, I received a specially designed official platinum champions pin and a signed certificate from her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cornwall. I carry my pin around with me and the certificate is on the wall in our support hub What has it been like since? It was very exciting and tiring! On the Friday night before the events started, we went to London and in the evening I came a cross a man who I thought was unconscious, so I went to him to see if he was breathing and help him come round, so he was safe. I'm back to being me now, Mr busy Peter, supporting my community, but holding my head with pride! You got to go to the party at the Palace, how was that experience? The party was amazing, and the atmosphere was on fire! There were over 20,000 people, all celebrating the 70 years’ service of Her Majesty the Queen. Everyone was proud and excited so many big names were performing. Then the next day, we got to go to The Oval for the Big Lunch. Being next to HRH Prince Charles and HRH the Duchess of Cornwall was amazing, and hear the story from some of the other winners was great!

What was the best bit? The best bit from me was the drone show at Buckingham Palace, and that just felt like magic! Queen's Award for Voluntary Service Barnsley Winners! The Platinum Champions weren't the only winners last month! We had another reason to celebrate some Barnsley Royal Recognition!
BARNSLEY ACTIVITY
While the Platinum Champions Award recognises individual volunteers, the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, is a long-running, yearly award that is equivalent to an MBE and recognises a whole voluntary group. Nominees for this award have to be nominated by people who benefit from their work, as well as members of the public or other voluntary groups. Nominees are assessed by a regional committee, before being passed to a national committee for final selection and recommendation to The Queen. There was a record number of 12 groups achieving the award in South Yorkshire this year, and there was some tough national competition, so these really are very special. A HUGE congratulations go to Barnsley Main Heritage Group and Wombwell Dam - Community Angling Club, who have both achieved the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service! Such a well deserved honour for them both, and great to have another two Barnsley groups to add to the list!
JULY 2022
Queen's Award for Voluntary Service Barnsley Winners! Barnsley Main Heritage Group
BARNSLEY ACTIVITY
Barnsley Main Heritage Group, formed in 2016 to conserve and protect the remaining buildings of Barnsley Main Colliery and the green space surrounding it. They want to educate people about the coal mining industry and the central role it played in the history of Barnsley and South Yorkshire. The site operates with 10 full time volunteers, who dedicate 2 hours on Tuesday’s and Thursdays to help on site with cutting back of vegetation, weeding and planting on site as needed by seasonal requirements. There is also a lot of volunteering that goes on behind the scenes, as the group is fully volunteer led. The impact the group has had on the local area is significant. Not only visually, but the site is often a hub of activity on volunteer days. Throughout their work, they have been able to develop a small on-site museum that tells the history of the site. Due to the location being somewhat isolated, the group have suffered several break-ins and vandalism, but have not been deterred by this. They have worked closely with a museum curator to understand how they can store, display and preserve items.

The area of the dam, which is situated in Wombwell Woods, had become overgrown and was plagued by fly tipping, litter and crime due to its location. Angling had not taken place there formally for a long time and as a collective, they wanted to restore and protect the wildlife and fish at the dam, championing angling as a sustainable physical activity, as well as promoting the surrounding area as a place to walk for families and the local community. The group maintain two still water ponds, the larger one of which is used for angling, as well as the surrounding pathways and car parking area. The group initially started by using their own tools from home to cutting back the weeds and brambles on the site, clearing the paths and walk ways. Working with the South area team, the group were able to apply for funding to get more tools to help with the clean-up. Through the work they have done in the last three years to clear up the site they have been able to turn the large dam back into a fishery and angling venue, as well as creating a beautiful, peaceful space for walkers, cyclists and families to enjoy, as well as hosting family fun days!
The site is open all year round, even on Christmas day! It is free to park and walk around. There is a small charge for anglers. You can find out more here https://www.facebook.com/wombwelldam
