Online Mentor - Brightside As a mentor for Brightside, you will be matched with a handful of young people, with whom you will exchange messages and support them with activities via their secure online platform.
SEITINUTROPPO
REETNULOV
You will give them insight into your education pathway and/or career and help them understand their options after school. You will help them understand their strengths and gain confidence in pursuing their ambitions. They have several projects coming up in partnership with schools in South Yorkshire that would benefit from people who know the county. The volunteering is flexible and can be done anywhere there is an internet connection, including from your phone. You opt into projects lasting 6-12 weeks and during a project it will take you around 1 hour a week to mentor. Volunteers complete their online application form and if accepted will be given an induction and training session, both taking place online. They also require a DBS check. They get in touch with applicants when they have spaces available on inductions which is typically around 2 weeks. The length of the induction process depends on your availability but can be as short as 3 weeks. Once your DBS check is in progress, they will start inviting you to join projects. Whether you work a desk job or in a manual role, are a CEO or beginning career, you have experience and knowledge that will help a young person. They need mentors to have good written English and access to a device with internet connection. But no other specific skills or experience are required. They provide full training on mentoring and using the platform so it matters most to them that you are enthusiastic and passionate about inspiring young people and promoting social change. Mentors share their own experiences of work and/or education with mentees so having mentors from a wide range of backgrounds is valuable to them and their mentees. They are especially keen to hear from people who have done or are doing an apprenticeship and/or work in: • Sport, including athletes, coaches, team managers and physios etc but also broader areas of work such as communications and event coordination • Construction and associated trades • Hospitality • Maritime • Health, clinical and non-clinical roles • Engineering, all types • Creative industries

REETNULOV
Barnsley’s Annual Winter Rucksack Project is running once again from now up until Saturday 18 December The project was established as a voluntary movement, revolving around a simple, but compassionate cause to help those sleeping rough or in desperate need. Like last year, they have a slightly longer list of items that they are seeking your help with, and again they are asking people to stick very closely to this list in order that they are able to effectively store it, before then moving it on and handing out. The key items they are looking for are: Rucksacks (preferably large), sleeping bags and camping mats Warm and waterproof coats, jumpers and hoodies (S/M/L only) Joggers and waterproof trousers (S/M/L only) Hats and gloves, and hand warmers New underwear and socks (S/M/L only) Toiletries (preferably male) Individual cartons of orange juice, instant coffee, long life milk and sugar Chocolate bars, cereal bars and biscuits Packs of rice, pasta and pasta sauce - as well as all in one pasta/sauce packs or noodles (e.g. pot pasta or pot noodles) Tinned vegetables, tinned meat and fish Some of the above items will be handed out as supplies of clothing and groceries (for instance for those moving from rough sleeping into a bedsit or similar), and other items will be used to assist with regular nightly food and drink handouts via the Barnsley Churches Drop-In Project. Barnsley Activity The RSPCA charity shop in Barnsley had been lacking donations and struggling since the pandemic hit, so one of the RSPCA Trustees got in touch with GoodGym Barnsley to see if they could help. Job Opportunities ARG Funding – Art Commissions – Open Call The Civic, Barnsley are seeking proposals from artists based in South Yorkshire for a series of art commissions across Barnsley Museums venues.
SEITINUTROPPO BOJ
What is the funding? The programme is funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) utilising Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) monies dedicated to supporting the cultural and creative industries across the region. This project is one of seven Prioritised Recovery Projects, part of a £2 million economic investment, funded by Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. As part of Barnsley’s Economic Recovery Action Plan, these projects will help the local economy bounce back from Covid. The programme aims to support people, businesses, traders, charities or community organisations to safeguard existing jobs as well as creating new jobs and businesses. South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis said: “There is no doubt that South Yorkshire is home to a wealth of creative talent. The arts, culture and heritage sectors have been hit hard by the impact of the pandemic and investing in these areas is an essential part of their recovery and renewal. If supported and nurtured, the Creative Industries can help drive growth in our region and realise untapped potential. Culture adds colour to people’s lives and I hope this funding will help make our region a great place to live, study, work, visit and invest in.” ARTIST BRIEF: LOVE BARNSLEY Contemporary Art Installation £3000 Project Duration: February 2022 Context The commission is to create an outdoor installation, but it is also intended to test new ways of working and reconnecting people, through engagement with the arts. This opportunity lies at the heart of a collaborative project with the artist, The Civic and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. Throughout 2022 Barnsley’s Town Centre cultural programme will be built around key thematic strands from which creative and dynamic opportunities will be generated.
DECEMBER 2021
Job Opportunities The first of which is ‘Love’ Barnsley – we’d like to challenge artists with this well used phrase/ term and see it transferred/ manifested physically within the public realm to communicate or question the word ‘love’.
SEITINUTROPPO BOJ
We hope to generate debate, push boundaries, and encourage new ways of thinking for both those familiar with the arts and those new to engaging with art and artists. Throughout the period we aim to deliver work that is accessible, inclusive and engaging; encouraging repeat attendance and connecting with audiences through content that is relevant and meaningful to them. The Civic and BMBC exists to provide Barnsley, South Yorkshire and the surrounding communities with a culturally significant voice; aiming to present a progressive programme of festivals, exhibitions, performances and events that relate to local and Borouygh-wide communities, social, economic and political attitudes whilst also entertaining and encouraging debate. With this in mind, people with disabilities and diverse backgrounds are significantly underrepresented in their engagement with the arts. The Department for DCMS say, “Disabled people are consistently under-represented in audiences.” The Arts Council has responded by encouraging projects which, “produce work that responds to the interests and concerns of people in their community, giving everyone involved a sense of ownership and encouraging people to take part who might not otherwise get involved.” Barnsley statistically has one of the highest rates of disability in the country with 1 in 4 people being registered as disabled at some point in their life. Objectives for the site of the artwork Distinctiveness – the creation of unique identities for the sites through work that is original and site specific/ responsive Quality – the physical quality of an environment and the experience of those using it Sense of place – a sense of place by drawing on key local references such as heritage, topography, site uses and demography Demonstrate exemplary practice in terms of interdisciplinary working It is expected that the artist’s design phase will include participatory arts activity that will seek to engage with local individuals and disabled groups and groups with diversity backgrounds through dialogue, debate and participation. The form of this activity and potential participants will be determined by the artist through research and in consultation with the partners.
