PICTURING HOYLAND IN THE 1950S

This exhibition is inspired by a unique collection of historic photographs from Barnsley Archives and Local Studies .

The photographs were taken by Ordnance Survey as part of a post war mapping project , starting in May 1954 They were taken to record survey points , known as ‘ Revision Points ’ ( or RP points ) around Hoyland , Rockingham , Elsecar and Hemingfield .

The images show fascinating glimpses of life in the post war years , including Anderson shelters in gardens , prefab housing and even hay waggons bringing in the early harvest . To celebrate the 65 year anniversary of the images being taken , staff from Barnsley Museums have recreated some of the shots , with help from local people , and the Elsecar Heritage Action Zone
