The Northern White Rhino has made headlines recently, but not for good reasons. Theirs is a tragic story that ends in virtual extinction. The last male northern white rhino was mercifully put to sleep on March 19th 2018. Sudan was reportedly unable to stand and suffered from complications due to his age. He was in a great deal of pain and though it broke the hearts of those who loved him, they did the right thing and set him free from his pain. (Washington Post)
There are now only two northern white rhinos in existence, Sudan’s daughter Najin, and his granddaughter Fatu. Both reside at the conservatory where Sudan lived and died. (NY Times)
