In this unconventional documentary, Steffan Strandberg tells the story about growing up with an alcoholic mother and about the night when his father finally came and took him and his younger brother away. Using animation, live-action reconstructions and old Super 8-footage, Strandberg recreates the summer of 1980 like he remembers it at the age of eleven. THE NIGHT is a moving and thought-provoking film about childhood, memories and growing up with parents with substance abuse problems. Contact: Norwegian Film Institute/Indie Film Wed 25.04.

KIDS ON THE SILK ROAD BØRNENE PÅ SILKEVEJEN Denmark 2017 • 1h 01m • Jens Pedersen • English subtitles

“Kids on the Silk Road” is originally 5 stories about children and young teens from 5 countries along the old silk route: India, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Nepal and Mongolia. Each story shows how the individual child deals with life’s challenges, big and small, which they face in their specific cultural context. Although the stories presented in the documentaries are small, they revolve around big universally recognizable themes.

To succeed she needs to perform an exercise on one hand which she can’t. Not just her dreams, but also the dignity of her family is at stake.

What happens when a child is uprooted and forced to face a brutal reality? In this year’s documentary seminar, we highlight the theme A NEW BEGINNING through three documentaries.

The filmmaker Angela Bravo will talk about how her life radically changed as a little girl and how she was forced to cope with the stigma of having an incarcerated parent.

69 MINUTES OF 86 DAYS, a film by Egil Håskjold Larsen

A NEW BEGINNING, a film by Ala’A Mohsen Rabiaa arrives from Syria to Kristiansad with his four-year-old son, Qais. They have lost the rest of their family in a barrel bomb attack in Aleppo. Now, the two of them must start over. Alone in Norway, Rabiaa dreams of rebuilding the family that is so important to him and his son. Producers Kristian Mosvold and Søren Steen Jespersen presents clips and discusses the challenges of establishing a new life in a new country, in addition to the challenges filming the vulnerable situation the little family fin themselves.

NR. 153, a film by Angela Bravo When Angela Bravo’s father gets a life sentence, her youngest siblings are only a few months old. The visiting room at Kumla prison is 2 × 4 meters and becomes an extension of the family’s living room. This film is an incredibly elegant depiction of what it’s like to grow up with the stigma of a parent who’s been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Civil war in Syria has led to a mass migration of refugees who are forced to make a perilous journey towards freedom. 69 MINUTES OF 86 DAYS follows the journey of one in particular: the three-year-old Lean. Having landed in Greece with her parents and uncles, Lean’s family must make their way across Europe to their relatives in northern Sweden — a transcontinental voyage — during which they face challenges just as difficult as those back in their homeland. SE MIN AR

Wednesday 25th April • 09:00 • Aladdin Cinema

In 2015, the Norwegian TV-series SKAM became a great success. In the 4th season of the series, the audience could follow Sana, a young Muslim girl through high-school, and watch her being torn between two – sometimes contradicting – cultures. Nancy Herz, Sofia Srour and Amina Bile started the movement, which in the media is referred to as: “The shameless girls”. The movement puts negative social control on the agenda. In the book, they discuss what it feels like to be constantly limited, corrected and shamed, and they share their own experiences.

NEW VOICES – A GAMECHANGER? Through film and conversation Filmfest UNG, Fritt Ord Foundation and PLATTFORM put emphasis on negative social control, cultural conflict and identity. CONTRIBUTORS Iram Haq (director of the film What Will People Say), Sofia N. Srour (writer of the book Shameless), Elias Tchaba (the artist Unge Beirut), Ayat Saeid (youth politician) and Omar Sadiq (Manager of PLATTFORM).

In September 2017, the film What Will People Say premiered in Norwegian cinemas. This assured piece of storytelling was made even more gripping by the knowledge that it is autobiographical. The film portrays sixteen year old Nisha’s double life — obedient to her traditional Pakistani upbringing at home, typical Norwegian teenager to her friends — comes crashing down when her concerned parents kidnap her and send her to Pakistan in this empathetic story of family, community, and culture. New role models have emerged, and in this seminar we discuss the way forward. This seminar will be presented in Norwegian. Wed 25.04.

PROGRAM 09:00: What Will People Say (1hr 46m). Introduction by director Iram Haq. 10.45 – 11.30: Talk moderated by Kristin Øygarden, manager of Ordkraft.
