WELCOME TO KICFF 2023!
It is with great pleasure we welcome you to Kristiansand International Children’s Film Festival (KICFF) 2023. We are proud to present 99 films from 39 different countries this year. The festival will be officially opened by Erik Rostoft, Deputy Mayor in Kristiansand. The opening ceremony will

be attended by some of the crew and cast from the opening film Birk&Magna-TheDarkSecretofthe Mine.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
All screenings will take place at Kristiansand Cinema and Aladdin Cinema. For screenings at Kristiansand Cinema, guests must collect their tickets (free of charge) for each screening there. Screenings at Aladdin Cinema do not require tickets, just turn up with your accreditation card.
FILMS WITH ENGLISH DIALOGUE OR SUBTITLES
Some of our films will be screened with English dialogue or subtitles. A selection of titles from our program are also available with subtitles in our Screening Club for professionals.
SCREENING CLUB
Our Screening Club is located at Kristiansand Cinema (1st floor). The Screening Club is only available for film professionals and is open from Tuesday-Friday 10:00 – 17:00.
FESTIVAL OFFICE
The Festival Office will be located at Shalam, Vestre Strandgate 13, next door to Kristiansand Cinema. The opening hours will be from Tuesday-Friday 08:00-14:00 and Saturday 10.00 – 15:00. On Sunday the office will be closed.

FILMS ON THE HORIZON
‘Films on the Horizon’ will introduce 6 new Nordic feature film projects for children and youth. The presentations will take place at Kristiansand Zoo on Thursday 27th of April from 16:30. The presentations will be held in English and there is no entrance fee. For full information about the films, please see pages 50-51.
AWARDS
Eleven awards will be handed out at KICFF this year. The award ceremony will take place at Haubitz Hall, Salong og Låve, Odderøya on Friday April 28th at 19:00. Information about the awards and full jury presentations, please see pages 46-52.

BIRK OG MAGNA – GRUVENS
Magna needs to know what really happened to her father when he vanished several years ago. At the same time Birk is fighting the fight of his life to save the tourist lodge he runs with his adoptive father. When he realises the vanishing of Magna’s father is somehow connected to his own mysterious past, the two join forces. Both have a burning desire to understand who they are, and where they come from. The questions lead them to an environmental crime of dimensions.

The film is based on one of the most important Norwegian children’s books of all time by writer Torbjørn Egner. His stories have been an integral part of childhood in Norway since they were first published in the 1950s.

The film is director Ari Folman’s third animated feature.

The year is 1940, and twelve-year old Rolf is fleeing the Nazis with his father, a critical German journalist, and their dog Adi. They hire Núria, a local girl, to guide them cross the Pyrenees. But when Rolf’s father is caught, the two kids have to make it on their own. Now all they can rely on is each other when war and terror surround them.

The film is based on Rüdiger Bertram’s novel and is inspired by real events.

In their review of the the film, Cineuropa said ‘Firas Khoury’s debut feature is a fiery and engaging exploration of youth, politicization, and forced forgetting.’
They also highlighted the strong performances, particularly from Bakri in the lead.

The first short film based on the acclaimed books by Gaute Heivoll. The first in the series “Estragon’s stories”, where each individual book deals with one of the seven deadly sins. And maybe there is an eighth?

The BFF Children’s Film Award will be given to the Best International Children’s film. The Norwegian distributor who secures the winning film in Norwegian distribution, will be granted 50,000 NOK.

CHRISTIN BERG Programming director, Nordisk film cinemas office
Christin Berg had previously studied media and culture before she started working at the offices of Oslo Cinematographers in the late 80’s. She has also worked in a production company called Oslo Film, and for some years as Director of Programming for the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund. As she states herself ‘Once I got caught in the magic of the cinema, there was no way out’. She currently works as programming director for Nordisk Film Cinemas office in Oslo, which is the successor of the previously mentioned cinematographer.
ROY SØBSTAD Film critic, Fædrelandsvennen

Since 2013 Roy Søbstad has reviewed more than 850 films for Fædrelandsvennen, the largest newspaper in the region. He also reviews tv shows and music in the same newspaper, as well as reviewing comic strips for the website Empirix.no. Additionally, he is a designer, illustrator, cartoonist, comic strip creator and freelance writer.

Trine Aadalen Lo has produced the feature films

Rafiki (Bestevenner), The Tough Guys (De tøffeste gutta) and Los Bando, and a number of short films. These films have all been aimed at children and youth audiences and have travelled widely on the festival circuit. She graduated from UCA in the UK in 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in film production. In 2017 she participated in the EAVE Producers Workshop. She was a producer in the production company Filmbin in Lillehammer from 2004 to 2018. In the autumn of 2018 she gave up film producing after having lived with chronic pains since 2014. Kristiansand International Children’s Film Festival is her first representation in the film industry in over 4 years.

The award of 100,000 NOK is presented to the best pitch of a project to be realised within the Zefyr region. The award will be presented to the winner during the award ceremony on Friday. This is our only time limited content. All presentations during the pithing competition will be held in Norwegian.
At this year’s festival, for the sixth year running, Zefyr Media Fund and Kristiansand International Children Film Festival jointly host a pitch session. Three jury members have chosen 8 projects that will be pitched at KICFF.

HENRIK RAFAELSEN
Actor, Kilden Performing Arts Centre
After studying at Teaterhögskolan in Stockholm in the late 1990s, Henrik Rafaelsen remained in the Swedish capital and worked as an actor at Stadsteatern until 2004. From there he moved to Oslo and Det norske teateret (2004-2006) and then Nationaltheatret (2006-2020). In 2020 he returned to his hometown of Kristiansand and has been employed at Kilden Performing Arts Centre since.

He has starred in more than thirty Norwegian and Swedish films and tv series, and has won several prestigious awards for his work, amongst them Norwegian Theatre Critics Award 2004/2005, Amanda Award Best Actor 2011, Best Actor Karlovy Vary IFF 2012 and The Canon Award 2017. He has also been nominated for an Amanda Award in 2017 and a Guldbagge Award in 2018.
INGUNN MYKLEVOLL SJØEN

Ingunn Myklevoll Sjøen is a production and information consultant at the Zefyr Media Fund. Ingunn has a long career in public administration aimed at the AV industry and also has many years of experience as a journalist and cultural director/ cinema director. She graduated from the University of Sunderland in 2005 with a master’s degree in media production. She also has a bachelor’s degree in communication, culture and media studies from the same educational institution.

Script advisor
Signe is a Swedish/Dutch script advisor and film curator with a long track record in film and media, with a focus on youth and family audiences. She started her career at the Dutch film and television producer Bos Bros and later became a buyer and commissioning editor at the Dutch public broadcaster KRO and Nickelodeon Benelux. For the past five years (2017-2021) she served the Netherlands Film Fund as a film commissioner with focus on children’s and family films. In 2021 she was a script editor trainee at the Torino, and she currently works as a Tutor at TFL and as an independent script advisor. Signe has an extensive experience in curating and managing festival programmes and industry events, such as Cinekid and Holland Film Meeting. She is an international advisor at Meetings on the Bridge and is since the beginning of 2023 she is the Acting Head of Programme at the Netherlands Film Festival.

Ditte Lundsgaard Nielsen has more than 15 years of experience working with children, animation and storytelling as part of the team behind the development center Animated Learning Lab at The Animation Workshop, VIA UC in Viborg, Denmark. For the past 7 years, Ditte has been the festival director of ANIMOK, an animation and game festival for children and youth, also located at The Animation Workshop, VIA UC, where she is passionate about giving children and youth strong film and game experiences that broaden their understanding of the world and helps them become creative creators.
MIREL MESILA Project Coordinator in Just Film
Mirel Mesila is a project coordinator at the Youth and Children’s Film Festival Just Film, the biggest subfestival of the A category Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Her journey started in 2014 when she was chosen as to be a young film critic for the festival. Shortly after, she was joined the official festival family as the youngest member of the programming team. Over the years, she has gained professional experience in journalism and media, international event organisation and film festival programming. She believes that films are powerful tools for visual communication, togetherness, and wider understanding.

Pantelis Panteloglou has studied Social Anthropology in Athens and has an MA on Social Exclusion and Minorities. He has been working in audiovisual sector, cinema and theater since 2003 in various creative and organizational positions. Since 2011, he has worked for Olympia International Film Festival’s for Children and Young People film selection, printed material, international relations and exchanges and translations. He is currently the deputy artistic director of OIFF. In February 2022 he was elected on the board of the European Children’s Film Association and since February 2023 he took over as president.
