WELCOME TO KICFF 2019 It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to Kristiansand International Children’s Film Festival (KICFF). This year, we are proud to present almost 100 films from 28 different countries. The 22nd edition of KICFF will officially be opened by the Mayor of Kristiansand, Harald Furre, together with the cast and filmmakers behind the opening film “MY GRANDPA IS AN ALIEN”.

FILMS ON THE HORIZON “Films on the Horizon” will introduce six new Nordic feature-film projects for children and youth: CAPTAIN SABERTOOTH AND THE MAGIC DIAMOND (NO), DREAMBUILDERS (DK), THE CROSSING (NO), SISTERS (NO), ELLA BELLA BINGO (NO), MUGGE AND THE STREET PARTY (DK). The work-in-progress presentations are in English. AWARDS Seven awards are handed out at KICFF this year. The Best Pitch Award grants 100 000 NOK to the winning pitch. The BFF Children’s Film Award grants NOK 50 000 to the Norwegian distributor who will secure the winning film Norwegian distribution. BFF Short Film Award will be given to the best Norwegian short film in the competition programme, which will be nominated for the prestigious Amanda Award. The ECFA Award will be presented to the best European feature-length film. The Youth Jury will present the UNG Award to the best film in the youth section. KICFF also includes a Children’s Jury, which consists of five jury members, aged 11- 13. They will present the Barn-i-byen Award which is an award given in collaboration with a local magazine for families. Finally, our festival audience will give the Audience Award to the most popular film.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION All screenings are located at Kristiansand Cinema and Aladdin Cinema. Guests must collect tickets

at Kristiansand Cinema (free of charge) for every screening that takes place at Kristiansand Cinema. Screenings at Aladdin Cinema is an exception, there are no tickets. Just show up with your accreditation card. FILMS WITH ENGLISH DIALOGUE OR SUBTITLES Some of our films are screened with English dialogue or subtitles. A selection of titles from our programme are also available with subtitles in our Screening Club for professionals. SCREENING CLUB Our Screening Club is located at Kristiansand Cinema (1st floor). The Screening Club is only available for film professionals and is open from Monday – Saturday, 09:00 - 18:00 (Saturday 09:00 17:00). Una finds it difficult to make friends. She is ignored by her brothers and her grandfather is basically her only friend. Una discovers a secret cellar and finds a small, grumpy robot who tells her a strange family secret: her grandfather is an alien and must stay close to her mother, who depends on his life energy. Una and the robot have 24 hours to find Grandpa and save her mother! Their swords drawn and mighty laser guns at the ready, Sune, his younger brother and his best friend Sophie regularly embark on epic fantasy battles. Yet as the summer holidays draw to an end, ten-year-old Sune has a different challenge waiting for him in the real world: a new classmate, whose name is also Sune. The new boy is making quite an impression on the others. In fear of losing Sophie to his namesake and nemesis, Sune decides to reinvent himself, with tumultuous consequences.

As Horace Hedgehog attempts to eat Morten’s grandma, he tries to pass a law for all the animals to agree to be friends and stop eating each other.

A family film based on the book “Bille” by Vizma Belševica. This is a sorrowful but life-affirming and witty story, full of hope. It shows the process of maturing of a child and her attempts to come to terms with the world in late 1930s Latvia. Bille has learned to cope with poverty but is deprived of her mother’s love and she is told that she is a good-for-nothing who won’t achieve much in her life. This hurts Bille, but the girl has a dream – to prove herself and break loose from the feeling on being inferior. The actual Bille – Belševica herself – managed to find her way in life. Jón’s (10) soccer team, The Falcons, is competing in one of the nation’s biggest soccer tournaments. As if the pressure wasn’t already high enough, the whole event is held on the top of an active volcano on the southeast coast of Iceland. Their team captain gets injured in the first game, and the rest of the tournament, Jón and the other boys have to fight harder to become better team players. While this is happening, unexpected drama with one of the boys from another team arises. Jón and his friends need to choose who they’re going to help – their own team, or a boy in desperate need of their rescue.

Siblings Keaton and Gladys are travelling alone on a spaceship to a planet that never appears to get any closer. They are the sole members of what should have been a group voyage from a dying Earth to a world where humanity was planned to begin anew. Instead, it’s just them. Or at least, it was. The arrival of an alien acts as a wedge between brother and sister, with both unsure of its motives. Their situation isn’t helped by the sensation that there is also an unidentified outside force at work.

A week of vacation at the beach with the whole family! For Sam, it’s a week full of ruminating on life, death and Tess. He’s haunted by the notion that his brother and his parents will all die someday, most likely before he does, seeing as he’s the youngest. So Sam resolves to prepare for the inevitable as best he can: with daily practice of being alone. A feature documentary where four survivors from the Utøya terrorist attack in 2011 reconstruct their memories in a black box studio together with twelve young participants in order to share and remember their experiences. Six years after the attack Rakel, Mohammed, Jenny and Torje, all survivors of Utøya, gather in northern Norway to remember and to reconstruct what happened . The aim is to reconstruct and to remember how they managed to survive at Utøya during that massacre. With the help of the participants and white tape markings that depict the different locations relevant for each survivor, the black box studio becomes a memory room for the event at the island. What happens when you change point of view – from one end of the spectrum to the other. What happens to the victims of the extreme consequences of radicalism. Is it possible to come back from extreme viewpoints?

In the film SOLA SCRIPTURA, Signe Tørå Karsrud focus on her dad who goes from being a left wing orientated priest to join the right wing wave in the religious community. In RECONSTRUCTING UTØYA, the Director, Carl Javér, gets four of the survivors from 22nd of July to relive their experience to get a better understanding. Karen Winter was formerly active in the extreme right wing community before she realised that she needed to escape the radical mindset and community. She portrays this in the film EXIT.

Karen Winther goes on a personal journey, reflecting on her very own extremist past and the stories of the people she meets along her travels, such as a former left-wing extremist and former right-wing extremists who made the leap to leave their movement.

Following, there will be a panel discussion about radicalism. The filmmakers Carl Javiér, Karen Winther and Signe Tørå Karsrud will be in the panel together with Magne Langseth (Agder police district) and Ragnhild Elisabeth Sørbotten Moen (PhD Research Fellow). The conversation will be moderated by Omar Sadiq (Head of Plattform).

The winning project gets awarded 100 000 NOK to produce a pilot. Four jury members have chosen eight projects that will be pitched at KICFF. The jury consists of Aage Aaberge, Christin Berg, Jan Aksel Angeltvedt and Kim Skarning Andersen who will be handing out the award on Saturday’s Award Ceremony. All presentations are in Norwegian.

JAN AKSEL ANGELTVEDT Advisor, films and tv-series Jan Aksel Angeltvedt has a background in producing and documentary making. He received his education at University of Bergen and Volda University College. Angeltvedt ran the production company, Alligator Film AS in Bergen. He’s been active in the film industry during his whole career, focusing on the region. He has received awards as both documentary maker and film producer and has worked on prestigious productions such as; Nokas (2010), Skjult (2009) and Villmark (2003). Jan Aksel currently works as films and tv-series advisor for Zefyr Media Fund (Mediefondet Zefyr). The largest regional fund for audio-visual production in Norway and second in size to Film in Vast (Vastra Gotaland - Sweden) in the Nordic area. AAGE AABERGE Film Producer Aage Aaberge is a merited Norwegian film producer who has worked in the film industry for over 30 years. In addition to at least 50 short films and documentaries, Aaberge has produced/ co-produced more than 30 feature films. He specialised in film studies at the University of Trondheim, has been an adjunct professor at the Film School in Lillehammer and has throughout his career had a number of honorary positions in the industry, including Head of the Norwegian Film Association, the Norwegian Film and Television Producers’ Association and Board member of the Norwegian Film Institute for two terms. In 2003 Aaberge was hired as chairman of Nordic Film’s Film Department in Norway and has since been linked to the company, including as producer of the Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated film Kon-Tiki in 2012. bff.no/en

KIM SKARNING ANDERSEN

Programme Director Christin Berg studied media and culture before she started working at the program department, Oslo Cinematographers, in the late 80’s. She has previously worked in a production company called Oslo Film, as programming director for the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund. As she states herself: “Once I got caught in the magic of the cinema, there was no way out…”. She currently works as programming director for Nordisk Film Kino, Norway’s largest Movie theatre Chain with cinemas located in Oslo and several other cities.

Cinema Director Kim Skarning Andersen holds the position as CEO of KinoSør AS, a leading cinema company in the South of Norway with 75 employees and approximately 450.000 annual guests. In the period 2014 – 2017 he was also Chairman of Kristiansand International Children’s Film Festival. His former work experiences include six years in advertising and PR as Manager, Advisor and Copywriter. In addition to this, Kim has worked for more than ten years in several managerial positions in both European and Nordic IT Companies.

THE BFF CHILDREN’S FILM AWARD The BFF Children’s Film Award to the Best International Children’s Film. The Norwegian distributor who secure the winning film in Norwegian distribution, will be granted 50 000 NOK. The BFF Short Film Award will be given to the best Norwegian short film in the competition programme. The film will be nominated/shortlisted for Amandaprisen.

ÅSE MEYER Festival Director of The Norwegian Short Film Festival Åse graduated from the University of Oslo with a degree in Film Studies and she has got a wide range of experience in the many fields of film. For the past few years she has been working in Brussels as a national expert in the Creative Europe MEDIA program, where she had responsibility for the subsidy grants for international co-production funds and development grants for European feature films. She has also been a short film consultant with the Norwegian Filminstitutt, manager and consultant at Sørnorsk Filmsenter and senior advisor at the Ministry of Culture’s media department. She is one of the founders of the Film fra Sør festival, where she was a board member and chairman for several years. She is now working with project development and as a script consultant through her own company. bff.no/en

FREDRIK WANDRUP Journalist and author Fredrik has been working for the daily newspaper Dagbladet, since 1976. He has distinguished himself as a reporter and a critic in many fields but is best known for his work in the cultural area, covering literature, music and film. He is currently the newspaper’s main book critic. He has written several books, among them biographies about the Norwegian authors Jens Bjørneboe and Olaf Bull, and about James Bond, crown prince Haakon and the jazz singer Radka Toneff. He has also published the novel “Svart poker”. Wandrup is from Oslo but has lived in Kristiansand for the last few years.

EVEN THUNES JENSEN Managing Director of Krona Kino Every summer, Krona Kino is hosting a jazz film festival and Even was also involved in starting and running the short-lived but artistically successful Kongsberg Music Film Festival. Formerly, Even spent seven years as a festival coordinator for Barnefilmfestivalen and has served on several festival juries both in Norway and abroad. Off duty, Even spends his time making sure his 6-year-old twins are not exposed of harmful media content (the twins have not yet seen Disney’s FROST!!!), listens to noisy free form jazz and cooking.

ALEXANDRE DUPONT-GEISSELMANN Distributor, Farbfilm Verleih (Germany) Alexandre Dupont-Geisselmann is a graduated MBA, passed various stations in Marketing and Distribution since 2005. He has been Managing Director and shareholder of Farbfilm Verleih, a German distribution company as well as Farbfilm Production. In the beginning, Farbfilm Verleih focused on children’s films. Followed by highly decorated debut films and exciting documentaries. Over the years more mature and more international films have been added. After more than ten years of distribution Farbfilm Verleih’s films can now be found on all kind of major European and International film festivals.

INGRID STENSEN Programme director, TIFF Junior (Norway) Ingrid Stensen is currently working as project coordinator for Children and Youth at Tromsø International Film Festival, where she is Program Director for TIFF junior, a children’s film festival. Stensen holds a Master’s degree in pedagogy from Universitetet i Tromsø. She has got several years of experience from working in theater and film.

JOHANNA THELANDER Distributor, FilmCentrum (Sweden) Johanna Thelander graduated from Stockholm University with a degree in Culture and Cinema studies. Since 2014 she has worked for FilmCentrum, a Swedish organization which imports and distributes children and youth films and works with film education. As Head of Digital Distribution, she is responsible for importing film and distributing films all around the country as well as spreading knowledge about film and media literacy.
