I am a southern girl; born and raised in the deep south. I am well acclimated to humidity and heavy rain, and to be honest, I would choose hot summers over frigid winters any day. In between those two extremes lies the gentle rains and cool breezes of fall. That is where I love to be.

Thirteen of my 50 years were spent in the north; Pennsylvania and New Hampshire specifically.

During that time, I fell in love with the vibrant changes of the landscape and the festivals and celebrations that those changes ushered in.

Even though southern falls aren’t quite as colorful, it is still my favorite time of year.

It is typically the beginning of events and celebrations that bring us closer to those we love and gives us something to look forward to.

We all crave the comfort that comes with traditions and predictability. The smells and sounds of those festivities often evoke beautiful memories of days past. We are wrapped warmly in that nostalgic embrace; inspired to create new ones.

In a time where we often feel disconnected and a little unbalanced, this time of year can still be a balm for the soul. Even when gathering in person is not always feasible, there are small ways we can connect. Through food, through stories, or simply by supporting one another. It is still possible to capture the essence of what this time of year has always been aboutconnection.

Since announcing the purchase of the historic barn on Facebook and Instagram, the Cikowski's have received hundreds of messages from people sharing their personal memories of the barn.

flourishing over Zoom calls, and treasures discovered after being overlooked by others. This is one such story. After perusing Facebook Marketplace in 2020, Kristy Cikowski came across an old barn for sale. It had not been lived in for over 70 years and had last been used as a commercial space.

Over the ensuing years it would find new life as a winery, and a series of restaurants and bars, until it came across Kristy’s Facebook page on that fateful summer

While it is exciting to discover that famous people once visited the barn, Kristy became even more intrigued by the stories of locals who had so many memories rooted in the barns history.

That is the beauty of old homes and buildings.

They have borne witness to the everyday milestones of the generations of families and communities in which they have been a part of.

It is easy to imagine the celebrations of weddings and births, moments of loss and grief that may have been experienced there.

There are pieces of the past everywhere you look inside The Medallion Manor. It is in the warmth of the rich beams and posts of the interior, deeply etched with the passing of time.

space. They also hope that The Medallion Manor will be the go-to place for guests to stay when they are in town for weddings and other local events.

With its proximity to the Indiana/Michigan border and only 15 minutes from the shores of Lake Michigan and area wineries, it is a location that will be desirable for many visiting the area. In addition, beautiful downtown La Porte is well worth exploring during a visit.

While implementing their design, the Cikowski's plan on being very mindful of preserving the history of the barn. They recognize that it is an integral part of not only the barn itself, but the people and the town that surround it.

Older homes and buildings are at the heart of their communities. They are part of the aesthetic and cultural history of a city, helping to give its inhabitants a sense of place and connection to the past.

Dan and Kristy recognize this old barn is permanently woven into the fabric of La Porte. They are honored to become a part of the broader tapestry and create something that they, their family ,and the city, can be proud of.

When I think of holiday recipes, I think of tradition. Often times these recipes have been passed down generations, and I think that helps bind a family and preserve its memories. As a nutrition chef, I love showing others how to put a healthy spin on recipes that may not be the healthiest.

I believe our health starts in the kitchen not the doctor’s office, so what we eat every day can add up and directly affect our 20

health long term. Because of that, it’s my mission to inspire others to make some small shifts with their daily ingredients.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it’s a time for love & gratefulness without any gifts. It also focuses on food and who doesn’t love that?! As I started my healthy cooking journey, I struggled finding the right information. I needed simple and quick recipes. I also needed them to be delicious. I began creating my own recipes with ingredients that I knew were anti-inflammatory, but still delicious.

This holiday season, I wanted to create a healthy version of candied yams. Sweet potatoes are packed with nutrients; so much so that they really shouldn’t be in the same category as white potatoes. Sweet potatoes are loaded with fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins C & A. So it got my wheels turning, “Why are we taking an amazing vegetable, like sweet potatoes, and ruining them with HIGH amounts of sugar and dairy?” This was the thought that kept me up at night.

This recipe is simple & quick, but still gives you the sweetness we all crave. Almonds add the crunch, but are also loaded with protein & antioxidants. Maple syrup, many do not know, is actually healthy. It’s loaded with antioxidants as well! As I create recipes, I try to keep them simple, but make them taste so good that you want to come back for more!

Healthy cooking doesn’t have to be an “all or nothing” approach. It just takes a few tweaks with your ingredients and an open mind. I hope this holiday season there are recipes that bring your family to the heart of your home…the kitchen.

ach of the hundreds of enthusiastic Barndominium

design families I work with have a unique and often heart-warming story about their Barndo project. Some are first-time builders, some are committed to doing much of the finished work themselves, others are creating a gathering place on legacy property to be enjoyed by generations to come. One of my greatest pleasures in designing Barndominiums is hearing these stories and sharing in the amity and delight of so many Barndo dreams.

I am happy and gratified to share the stories of some of my clients with all of you. And, I hope you will be Barndo inspired!

By keeping the design simple, making some budget friendly choices and doing a significant amount of the work themselves, they built their 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 1,800 sq. ft.

After searching for nearly a year to find the right floor plan, Whitney says she and her husband, Billy Donn, independently happened upon one of my YouTube videos and they instantly knew they had found their Barndo designer! I was flattered and very happy to begin the design journey with the Holcomb family.

The Holcomb’s broke ground at the end of November 2020 and poured the slab the beginning of December and it was dried in within a couple of weeks. However, the build process was hindered because the pandemic veered right into their construction timeline. Several aspects of the project had to be placed on hold. Securing metal, trim, glass doors and other materials took several weeks and even

months. But with everyone in the family rolling up their sleeves and completing the finish-out, the Holcomb’s finally moved into their Barndo the beginning of July.

Whitney says they chose to build a Barndominium because Billy Donn loves metal buildings, and they were attracted to the high ceilings, versatility of the Barndo, and the ability to easily add on later if they so desired. The Barndominium works for their lifestyle.

The Holcomb’s lived in their bumper-pull 38’ camper for 3 years before building their Barndo. It was challenging but in the end, well worth it. They were able to save money and be on-site during the build process. Whitney says it also gave them a greater appreciation for the creature comforts – the simple things that meet their needs.

When designing their space, they planned around their family and lifestyle. They are a family of 6 (10 if you count the dogs).

With a daughter in college and three boys at home who spend more time outdoors than in, the Holcomb’s created plenty of gathering space with their 800 sq. ft. covered porch.

Billy Donn was no stranger to country living and had a previous life of riding and roping. At their aptly named Rust and Roots Farm, they raise their own meat, milk goats, collect fresh eggs and tend to their abundant garden.

Whitney says they are very mindful not to use pesticides or chemicals in their home or on the land. The pigs, chickens and goats are fed non-GMO, non-soy feed.

The family spent their first night in their new home on the 4th of July and it was complete with friends over to share in the food, fun and fireworks. In the months since, the 26

They brought no furnishings from their prior home so they included pieces selected specifically for their Barndo which is finished out in a Cottage Core aesthetic with as many vintage pieces Whitney can get her hands on. I am flattered to say that the vintage vanity in the owner’s bathroom was inspired by the vintage hutch in my own kitchen.

Today, the Rust and Roots Farm Barndo is filled with scratch baked bread, farm fresh eggs on the counter, and barefoot boys along with their four dogs full of dirt and sweat traipsing in and out. Cooking for friends and family is Whitney’s love language. They savor her special recipe mac & cheese, skirt steak, cabbage, and poppyseed chicken casserole deliciously made in cast iron pots. The family enjoys morning coffee as the sun rises, sitting on their east-facing porch.

The family’s future plans for their farm includes adding a pond and installing a pizza oven, and eventually developing a farm-to-table Air B&B on their property for folks who want to shop the famous “Trade Days” in Canton, TX. Their lives in their new Barndo is a work in progress, Whitney says, but they are in no rush.

The technology we have these days makes it easy to find and commit to anything from weight training, to stationary cycling, to barre, to yoga, to ballroom dancing, to running. I could go on and on! Find something that interests you and gets you fired up. Give it time. A good three months is a great benchmark period to test your interest, staying power, and progress. If you need a shift, find another style of movement and fitness and give yourself ample time to get into a groove and feel like you’re mastering the technique and challenges.

With an iPad in hand, he downloaded Quickplan 3D and began planning out his dream Barndo. The final design was a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 story home with 1200 sq. ft. of living and a 1677 sq. ft. shop with an impressive exterior elevation.

While others may have found the project daunting, Christian took on the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, learning trades along the way. From pouring concrete and framing, to installing windows and doors; he was involved in every aspect of the project- from design to finish. He says the most valuable lesson learned was the realization of just how much work, time and effort is involved in building your own home.

Christian admits that those skills and the help of family and friends, were instrumental in making the build a success. He was able to save a lot of money on the construction and complete the project in just 9 months.

For now he is enjoying the fruits of his labor, but is considering a new build when he outgrows this space. Perhaps someday there may even be an opportunity to help others.

Hurdles you and your builder may be facing-

Lumber and other material prices experienced a historical increase in 2021.

Although Lumber has begun to stabilize and, in some areas, decrease, it is not yet back to pre-pandemic levels. While that has provided some relief to consumers and builders alike, it has not cured the problem. Materials like steel have seen increases of more than 50% since the beginning of the year.

These inflated prices can raise the overall construction costs on a home. While homeowners may have agreed to a fixed price on a new build in April, costs may have risen tens of thousands of dollars before material can be ordered for the job.

Additionally, because of the limited availability and bottlenecks, materials are harder to obtain. Many are seeing long lead times on windows and doors, appliances, and other supplies.

DEMAND According to a report by the U.S. Census Bureau and United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the sales rate of new single-family homes was up by 41.5% from October 2020 compared to 2019.

The skyrocketing demand may create a bottleneck as builders, subcontractors and vendors try to keep up. Builders are having to turn clients away or create longer waitlists, to ensure that they don’t fall behind or postpone jobs they are currently working on.

LABOR With so much demand for housing, there is more work than skilled workers. A report by Trades International states that the construction industry lost 13% of its workforce during shutdowns.

Many craftsmen dropped out with no plans to return, causing a shortage even before demand increased.

While frustrations may be at an all time high for all parties, it is important to remember that many things are out of the control of the builder and suppliers. What is essential during this time is communication. Even when there is no progress to report, your builder should be checking in with you periodically. There is nothing worse than waiting, with no clear idea of when things will progress, and your builder doesn’t answer your calls.

SHOULD YOU WAIT? That is a question many are asking themselves. They fear that the costs are no longer in line with their budget. The thing to consider is that there is not a guarantee that prices will return to what they were a few years ago. Even with slight decreases, there is also the consideration that interest rates may go up. With rates at still at historical lows, higher construction costs may be offset by less interest over time.
