BARNARD CASTLE SCHOOL Welcome to Barnard Castle School situated in the historic market town of Barnard Castle. Set in the beautiful Teesdale countryside with easy access to transport links. The school’s outstanding facilities are available for hire for a variety of events and functions, from business to hospitality, social to sporting, and community to cultural. The school has ample free on-site parking and the building and grounds are wheelchair friendly. The school, which was founded in 1883, is set in a 50 acre estate. It is a mix of traditional and new: modern amenities have complemented the school to ensure it can offer state-of-the-art facilities. The Kenneth King Centre The state-of-the-art conference centre opened in 2016. This high-tech centre provides a very light and airy space set over two levels. It can be used as a stand-alone venue benefiting from its own entrance and reception area. The versatility of the conference centre facilitates a wide range of events from small seminars and training events to large-scale conferences and exhibitions. In order to support community events and local businesses we offer competitive rates and flexible options. Facilities can be hired at any time during school holidays and on a partial basis during term time.

Conference Rooms As a newly built addition to Barnard Castle School the new conference rooms offer a modern and contemporary design. With exceptional facilities and flexible layouts, rooms can be set up for lectures, seminars, classrooms or as boardrooms. Each room is equipped with the latest technology including interactive white boards. The building is AC controlled, has integrated sound system and free Wi-Fi throughout. Rooms can be booked for full day or by the hour.

Open Access Area The open Access Area is an impressive space, doubling up as a reception area and event space. This area offers flexible layouts and exceptional facilities, its open plan is ideal for arts events, presentation or social gatherings. The ground floor has two offices which can be used, one with a small meeting table. There are three versatile meeting rooms, two of which can be combined to make one large room. There is a large break out area with soft seating for up to fifty people and a fully equipped kitchen. The second floor has fourteen workstations, four with PCs and has lift access.

A unique feature is the fully functioning kitchen with three kitchen stations and a servery to the central area. Equipped with commercial appliances, and a glass-fronted fridge for bar service, this is an ideal facility for cooking and baking demonstrations.

Residential During the school holidays our residential accommodation is available for hire. We can provide superb facilities for up to 198 residents spread over four different buildings. With a range of single, double, triple and dormitory style bedrooms - some with en-suite bathrooms - we are uniquely placed in the area to be able to offer high quality overnight accommodation to large numbers of delegates or guests. The requirements of each booking are tailored to match the needs of the organisation. We are able to accommodate a wide range of requests, from specific catering requirements to the allocation of rooms and facilities.

Sports Facilities Barnard Castle School has a superb range of sports facilities on its 50 acre estate in the stunning countryside of Teesdale. The facility is a host to many local sports teams and is the ideal venue for clubs to make their home. The grounds can accommodate up to seven rugby pitches and up to three cricket pitches along with four brand new cricket nets. There is one dedicated football pitch but there is capacity for more. The fitness suite has its own free weights and cardiovascular machines and two squash courts. It provides an ideal viewing gallery for watching sport on the playing fields.

Atkinson Hall The Atkinson Hall is based in the Prep School and is used as their main hall. This venue is ideally suited for presentations, social gatherings, small exhibitions, fitness and dance classes. The Atkinson Hall can be used for one off events or for regular hire. It is available from 5pm every day and during school holidays.
Sports Hall
Other facilities include three outdoor netball courts and three hard courts for tennis, the Astro-turf has one full size hockey pitch and is converted to nine tennis courts during the summer. There is a swimming pool.
The Sports Hall is a superb indoor training facility which includes a wide range of equipment: 5-a-side pitches, basketball and netball courts, cricket nets, four badminton courts and a range of gymnastics equipment.
All these exceptional sports facilities are available for hire for training, sports events and competitions, as well as residential sports camps during school holiday and after school hours.
The hall is an ideal facility for a wide range of sports, dance classes, fitness clubs and many other activities.

Astro-Turf Pitch Our Astro-Turf pitch is sand based and floodlit. There is one full hockey pitch marked out. The pitch can be made into smaller pitches. The Astro-Turf pitch is available for hire by leagues and clubs as a full pitch, half pitch or a third.
Dance Studio The light and airy Dance studio is professionally equipped with mirrored walls and balanced bars. The space is ideal for dance classes and clubs, exercise classes and drama/theatrical groups. A sound system is also available.
Fitness Suite The Fitness Suite is equipped with a free weights room and a room for resistive cardiovascular machines, including treadmills, steppers, cross trainers and exercise bikes. The Fitness Suite is available for hire to qualified trainers, teams, and clubs.
Playing Fields The Playing Fields can be hired for a variety of sporting events, such as football, rugby, cricket and athletics. The area can also be used for outdoor shows, fetes or other events.
Swimming The school has an indoor heated swimming pool. For pool hire a lifeguard is required which can be arranged by the school.

Special Events Big School is perfect for large events, including theatre productions, banquets and concerts and presentation evenings. With a capacity of 156 in theatre style seating, Big School has a stage area for theatre performances as well as stage lighting and a professional sound system.

Location Barnard Castle School is situated on the outskirts of the town of Barnard Castle, next door to the Bowes Museum, which is well signposted throughout the town and surrounding area. The nearest railway station is Darlington, which is 20 minutes from school, with regular services to London (2 hours 20 mins) and Edinburgh (1 hour 30 mins). The nearest international airports are Durham/Tees Valley, which is within half an hour and Newcastle International Airport and Leeds Bradford Airport (both 1 hour away).

This 19th century museum, is next door and is home to an internationally renowned art collection and a huge range of treasures, which include furniture, clocks, porcelain, musical instruments, tapestries and toys. Arguably the most famous of the treasures is the mechanical Silver Swan.
Barnard Castle Set on a high rock above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III. With fantastic views over the Tees Gorge this fortress sits on the fringe of an attractive market town.
High Force High Force is one of the most impressive waterfalls in England, where the River Tees spectacularly drops 21m from the Whin Sill rock into the plunge pool below.
