SPORTING FESTIVAL WEEKEND

23-24 September 2023

Seddon Cup - Clegg Festival - Ewart Cup - Tait 10s

WELCOME FROM THE HEADMASTER

I am delighted to welcome you to Barney for our Sporting Festival Weekend, which promises to be another special occasion.

Our annual event has continued to grow in popularity, with more than 350 young sportsmen and women competing in Hockey and Rugby fixtures over the course of the two days, highlighting everything that is wonderful about team sport.

It will see four competitions keenly contested by teams from across the UK in Under 10 and Under 12 categories.

We look forward to welcoming back schools and old friends, many of whom have been with us since the Sporting Festival was established more than 15 years ago, as well as making new friends, who join us for the first time.

Good luck to all involved and enjoy the weekend.

With best wishes,

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Congratulations in advance to all competitors. Those taking part would not be here without the support of their coaches and parents, so a massive thank you on behalf of the players for giving up your time to be with us this weekend.

As always, our ground staff have done an amazing job preparing the excellent facilities, ensuring a memorable experience for all. The same can be said for our dedicated catering staff, who have also given their time willingly to support the Sporting Festival.

I would also like to extend my thanks to the County Durham Referees' Society for supporting the event once again. Barney is always well provided for by the Society, and we appreciate its contribution to the Sporting

Festival and our students, many of whom have qualified as officials or are working towards their qualifications. I am grateful to those pupils who will be officiating over the course of the weekend too, which is always a pleasure to see.

We hope everyone has a thoroughly enjoyable time over the course of the weekend, in whichever tournament you are participating or spectating.

I am looking forward to plenty of healthy competition, with sportsmanship and good play on display throughout.

How did it feel to be named as captain?

It was a very proud moment, and I am excited for the season ahead. I have enjoyed playing with this group of girls for many years now, so to lead them is going to be extra special and something I can’t wait for.

What are your hopes for the season ahead?

There is no greater feeling than playing with your friends and I am proud to call many of my teammates some of my best mates. Hockey at Barney is continuing to improve and we enjoyed a successful preseason, including an unforgettable tour of South Africa, all of which bodes well for the season ahead.

What is your favourite memory of Hockey at Barney?

We have reached a number of prestigious tournaments in recent times, including last year’s County Cup finals, but, again, for me, I just love the camaraderie of playing week in, week out with this group of girls.

You attended last summer's sports tour of South Africa. How was the experience?

Amazing. We played four Hockey games against testing opposition, and it was great to experience a different country and culture with my friends. The squad was in high spirits throughout and I made memories that will last a very long time. The whole trip was fun from start to finish.

What can aspiring Hockey players competing this weekend expect at the Festival?

Having taken part in this festival when I was younger, it was a great experience and the first real big tournament that I competed in. It is a fantastic opportunity for any aspiring Hockey player as it features some of the best teams from schools in our region and beyond, which should be used as a learning experience.

How did it feel to be named as captain?

It was a massive honour, especially being informed while in South Africa with my teammates. It is a privilege to lead out this team. I spent most of last season injured, which was a very tough year for me, so to be appointed captain is something I am hoping to make the most of and lead from the front.

What are your hopes for the season ahead?

Despite being injured for the majority of last season, the team enjoyed a successful year making it to the final of the National Plate, so I am hoping for another big effort this year. We have an exciting squad of talented players, so it will be a joy to lead this group and see how far we can go.

What is your favourite memory of Rugby at Barney?

Being involved in last year’s National Plate Final. It was my first game back from injury and it was a privilege to be involved, and to have the backing of the coaches here. While it was disappointing to lose narrowly, the experience in the build-up is something I won’t forget.

You attended last summer's sports tour of South Africa. How was the experience?

It is something I will remember for a really long time, with memories made both on and off the field. On the sporting front, we played some really good, competitive teams that were challenging, but a great experience all the same.

What can aspiring Rugby players competing this weekend expect at the Festival?

They will be competing against some top players in their age group, which provides an excellent learning opportunity. I played in the competition in Year 7 and can remember it being a bit of a struggle, but I wasn’t disheartened by the experience. If anything, it brought our core group of players closer together and we reaped the rewards as we grew older and played more competitively.

Barnard Castle School is delighted to announce that it has achieved the highest ‘Excellent’ rating awarded by our sector’s regulator, the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), following a rigorous and comprehensive inspection.

In April 2023, we welcomed inspectors from across the UK for a focused compliance inspection combined with an inspection of educational quality over a three-day period, which included lesson observations and staff and pupil interviews.

Following the rigorous inspection process, the ISI's team of inspectors gave high praise about the quality of our students’ academic achievements and personal development, awarding ‘Excellent’ in both categories.

Barney’s overarching purpose, vision and aims shone through the ISI’s report, with the Inspectorate attributing students’ excellent personal development as ‘a direct result of the values and ethos of the school. This is driven by the senior leadership team through the innovative use of assembly and tutorial time, which is endorsed by the governing body, thus fulfilling the school’s aim to develop young adults with character’.

Inspectors noted many key findings throughout the report, including:

• The comprehensive and experienced pastoral care team are a huge strength of the school and embody the values and ethos they wish to promote.

• Pupils reach for higher levels of knowledge and attainment whilst also having the freedom to

make their own educational choices.

• Pupils’ sense of awe and wonder in this circle of life was contagious.

• Pupils have an excellent understanding of service to their community which is reflected in many aspects of their school lives.

• Pupils demonstrate excellent collaborative and co-operative skills that reflect the school’s core values.

• Pupils’ contribution to others and the wider community is exceptional.

• Pupils’ achievements outside the formal curriculum are excellent. They enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities, in which participation levels are high and enrich their education and personal development.

Headmaster Tony Jackson said: “This was a rigorous and comprehensive inspection and we are incredibly proud of the outcome, which is validation of everything we endeavour to do. Our children are preparing for a rapidly changing world and are having to contend with adversity on a local and global level. The seamless implementation of our bespoke ‘Barney Education’ curriculum and ground-breaking, industry award-shortlisted ‘Apollo’ system ensure we remain at the forefront of technological advances in education, which has already had a positive impact throughout our entire School community.

“It is a pleasure to work alongside so many talented professionals and be part of such a special, unique community, and we are excited about what the future holds for our School.”
