Open to any student, regardless of major Courses in the literary, cultural, and embodied traditions of western and nonwestern performance Courses in the practices of acting, directing, design, dramaturgy, playwriting, management, and technical theatre

Barnard has amazing opportunities for students to get involved in theater, both through the department and the many student groups on campus! There are also opportunities for students to work in the Drama department both on and off stage! �� T h e a t r e D e p a r t m e n t

Black Theatre Ensemble (BTE)

Produces two shows each year for and by students of color to uplift black playwrights and thespians

Kings Crown Shakespeare Troupe (KCST)

Dedicated to producing Shakespearean playshas an annual tradition of staging an outdoor spring show, and two fall shows

Columbia University Players (CUP)

Performs straight plays, as opposed to musicals (usually two per semester) - hosts a one-acts festival and play readings throughout the year

Columbia Musical Theatre Society (CMTS)

Performs musical theatre, usually producing two shows per semester - stages the 24 hour musical, a showcase, and hosts musical events around campus

Barnard has multiple theatre spaces including the *NEW* LeFrak Theater in Barnard Hall, Minor Latham Playhouse (MLP) in Milbank and the Glicker-Milstein Theatre (GMT) in the Diana Center!

Tucked into the 2nd floor of the library, you’ll find:

A growing Zine Library (run by our own Zine librarian!) featuring independent student publishing A comfy Collage Corner stocked with scissors, glue, paper, and magazine clippings for spontaneous creativity

BARNARD HALL

An interdisciplinary program that integrates the study of dance within a liberal arts setting

Study the history, culture, theory and forms of western and non-western performance

Offers technique courses for students of all levels of expertise for majors and non-majors alike!

Barnard’s dance opportunities are robust and plentiful! Both through the department and the many student groups!

Levels all the way from elementary to advanced!

Orchesis

Barnard/Columbia’s largest student-run dance organization. They produce a show each semester with dances in every style ranging from beginner to advanced levels

Columbia University Ballet Ensemble (CUBE)

A student-led classical ballet company dedicated to performing a full-length story ballet each semester

CoLab Performing Arts Collective

Interdisciplinary dance group that hosts workshops and produces a showcase each semester

Students majoring in English can concentrate in American Literature, Creative Writing, Film Studies, and/or Theatre The creative writing concentration differs from the others in that students must submit an application to be considered for it Creative writing courses also require an application, but both majors and non-majors are able apply

Barnard frequently hosts awardwinning authors to speak on campus regarding their creative processes, writing blocks, and much more!

One alumna, Jhumpa Lahiri ‘89, both teaches and inspires students through her infamous creative writing classes and occasional oncampus conversations!

In January ‘25, Barnard held the Zora Neale Hurston Summit on Campus to celebrate Hurston’s evocative and ever-present writing

IN MUSIC THE QUAD

Students can reserve time slots for the Music Practice Rooms (which are located in the basement of Sulzberger Hall)

There are 3 music practice rooms that are equipped with either a baby grand piano or upright pianos for any student who wishes to practice/play!

Barnard’s freeform radio station!

WBAR is the college radio station of Barnard CollegeWBAR was developed in the early 1990s as a freeform alternative to WKCR-FM

Barnard’s all-female, student-run a cappella group (est. 1983)

Sings pop, R&B, folk, and student-arranged songs

Performs at major campus events like Convocation and Commencement

Auditions held each semester
