Throughout its long history, Barlow Respiratory Hospital has been dedicated to serving patients whose lives have been dramatically changed by respiratory illness. Both returned to tell their stories and enjoyed visiting with the Barlow Rehabilitation and Nursing teams who helped them recover and return home to their loved ones.

They both shared moving stories of uncertainty and immeasurable gratitude. Nina said, “Seeing all the wonderful people at Barlow again was precious. But how can you say ‘thank you’ to someone who gave you back your life? Thank you is not a big enough word…but THANK YOU.”

Over a year has passed since the COVID-19 pandemic began and affected our way of life – perhaps changing it forever in many ways.

Our Barlow Respiratory Hospital team faced uncertainty and upheaval and accepted dramatic change. With the pandemic raging in the community and widespread community-acquired illness reported every day, no place was free from COVID-19. In addition to the challenges we faced at the hospital, the pain and suffering in society showed us the worst and best of humanity. We were shaken to our core by the killing of George Floyd and mass shootings in Atlanta and Colorado but we also saw the best of humanity as health care workers around the globe stepped forward to care for those sickened by COVID-19 and scientists worked to develop novel vaccines in record time. As an organization we were, while shaken by COVID-19 — for the most part, able to continue with our mission to make a difference in the lives of the chronically critically ill.

Our physicians and clinical and management teams came together, and our doors remained open. Our brave clinicians showed up every day to serve those in need, just as our predecessors at Barlow had during the last pandemic.

Together, we watched as millions died and millions more became ill. Together, we grieved with friends and neighbors who lost loved ones to the pandemic. Together, we served our patients with unwavering commitment to excellence in care.

There were some things we could control. Throughout the pandemic, our vigilance and strict adherence to precautions helped us avoid any COVID-19 outbreaks. In April of 2020, when we admitted our first post-COVID patient, our clinical and support team members and our clinical leaders and physicians were ready. We provided our teams access to PPE, training and emotional support to maintain safety and wellbeing and in the end avoided any outbreaks.

Our commitment to ReBuild Barlow remains strong. Despite the pandemic, we kept moving forward with construction of our new facility on our historic Stadium Way campus. We remain on track to open the newly renovated facility in late 2022, our 120th year of service. We have completed the required earthquake retrofit and several of our construction milestones have been achieved. We built a new radiology

suite, and rehabilitation suites and a state-of-the-art pharmacy, and a new modern scope-washing system. We also installed new elevators and are currently building a new lab and data center all of which will support the new hospital. We did all of this while our hospital remained fully operational. Very soon we will begin construction on the interior of the new hospital patient rooms. These will be more spacious to accommodate medical equipment, healthcare teams and families visiting their loved ones in our care.

Together we were tested in many ways. As an organization, we survived the pandemic. But it took an emotional, and financial, toll on all of us. The pandemic decimated the hospital’s finances. While we continued to provide care, the pandemic had a catastrophic financial impact on the hospital.

Since March 2020, our admissions have been reduced by almost 50%. Costs went up since the pandemic and to this date we are only at 70–80% of pre-pandemic revenue. We continue to incur financial losses but I am extremely grateful that we did not have to resort to any job cuts.

Temporary setbacks are part of most journeys and we remain optimistic that, as long as we continue to work together with the singular aim of best patient outcomes, we will overcome these challenges. I am most proud that we continued to move forward on our trajectory of improvement. Due to our focus on clinical outcomes, we persevered. We continue to achieve superior outcomes of care and consistently outperform clinical outcomes in our region. This was a result of focus on our priorities of improving weaning rates, preventing infections, practicing good hand hygiene, preventing patient harm, and ensuring medication safety by following our policies and processes. We continue towards our goal of being the best long-term acute care hospital with the best clinical outcomes in California and in the nation.

Together, we revere the trust our community places in us to serve patients with excellence and expertise and the commitment of our team to achieve these goals. We are grateful for the hard work that each of our team members contribute towards this achievement.

has submitted an entitlements application for proposed construction of a 150-bed skilled nursing facility on the south end of the hospital’s campus at 2000 Stadium Way in Los Angeles. Barlow Respiratory Hospital is a long-term acute care hospital serving patients admitted for post-ICU care. Most patients have spent weeks or months dependent on a ventilator to breathe. After recovering at Barlow, patients are typically transferred to skilled nursing facilities for continued care. The proposed facility will fill a void becoming the skilled nursing facility to serve the downtown Los Angeles area, and will ensure uninterrupted continuum of care.

This facility will be designed specifically to meet the needs of patients with chronic critical illness and will specialize in patients with ongoing respiratory conditions. This will be the only skilled nursing facility in the area specially built to serve this unique patient population.

The proposed facility will enable Barlow Respiratory Hospital physicians to continue to monitor recovery of medically fragile patients within the hospital’s existing campus and will meet the needs of families and patients by avoiding the pain of transitioning to distant locations for ongoing care.

The proposed facility will have a welcoming residential appearance. It will be located in an area that is currently a parking lot and will feature a groundfloor lobby, outdoor patios and landscaping designed to preserve and integrate the current environment. Barlow Respiratory Hospital is the only not-for-profit respiratory hospital in California and was founded in 1902 as Barlow Sanatorium.

At Barlow Respiratory Hospital we have a reputation for excellence in the care of respiratory illness. Over more than a century, we have amassed unparalleled expertise in the care of medically complex patients. Despite all the hard work that has gone into that proud achievement, another way to look at that achievement is quite simple: When you do something for a long time, you get pretty good at it.

At Barlow Respiratory Hospital, we’ve been at the forefront of respiratory care for nearly 120 years. We have a long history of care, and also of curiosity. What is it that we do that can be shared with others to help them benefit from our expertise?

Our Barlow Center for Outcomes and Value answers that question with the annual publication of the Barlow Respiratory Hospital Outcomes Book. The center’s research remains dedicated to improving outcomes and value in the care of critically ill patients and to elevate the standard of care for every patient, everywhere.

In light of that tradition and our legacy of commitment to research, our team recently published the first research on the topic of "Post-COVID recovery: Characteristics of chronically critically ill patients admitted to a long-term acute care hospital." The report was presented by Dale Jun, M.D. at the 2021 California Research Forum on Lung Health and was awarded 3rd place for Original investigations. The report can be found on Barlow Respiratory Hospital website and online.

LOVE AND DIGNITY

We Stood Waiting in the Parking Lot So We Could Touch Him Emilio Owera’s family could not miss the opportunity to see him, even for a moment. When they learned he would be discharged from Barlow Respiratory Hospital to continue his recovery in an acute rehab facility, they hurried to catch a glimpse of him. They waited in the evening chill for a chance to touch his hands and see his face as he was rolled from the ambulance to the facility. They told him he would get stronger there and they’d continue to wait for him to come home.

Then they realized they had not yet thanked the team who had cared for him at Barlow. His daughter Christine quickly wrote a review and followed up with a phone call. Passing the phone between herself and her brother Joel, they shared the family’s thoughts and thanks for the care their father received at Barlow Respiratory Hospital Van Nuys at Valley Presbyterian Hospital (VPH).

“My dad turned 73 in the hospital. We did not get to celebrate his birthday. We did not get to celebrate Christmas. As a matter of fact, he got trached on his birthday. We were afraid he would be lost to COVID-19. We were afraid he would be mad at us.” Emilio had casually told his family in the past, “If I’m ever hooked up to tubes, just let me go.”

But they could not. “We did what we thought was right. We could not let him go without a fight. He is a very loving, thoughtful father and we owe our life in America to him. He came here first and he worked … thousands of miles away from us … for twelve years until we could all migrate to be together again and live the American Dream.”

A retired X-Ray technician, Emilio has always been a hard worker and has been active. He had a routine: He cared for his grandchildren, driving them to and from school before the shutdown. Before he fell ill with COVID-19, he worked out every day. Following his example, his family was active and engaged in monitoring his care at Barlow Respiratory Hospital. “We kept a journal – every shift, every blood pressure reading, all the labs, the O2 saturations, everything.”

The family would not let their father feel abandoned. They called frequently for updates. As Emilio’s condition progressed and with the help of Barlow respiratory and speech therapy teams and a Passy Muir speaking valve, the family could finally see him on Facetime.

Grateful Patient Family Thanks Barlow

They are grateful for each Barlow team member and for each area of expertise that served their father’s recovery, “We could not visit because of the pandemic so they were our eyes and ears,” says Christine before handing the phone to her brother Joel.“They were compassionate and communicated professionally with us, always calling us back. My dad had his dignity and the respect he deserves. It was a good experience for us,” adds Joel, “Thank you so much.”

Special praise goes to wound care nurse Angelica for keeping them informed about wounds that had developed, but had not been shared with the family, during a previous hospitalization.

The shocking images brought them to tears. But Angelica continued to share images that allowed them to see progress as the wounds healed and helped the family to feel secure in the level of care their father was receiving at Barlow. As with many hospitalizations, there were ups and downs in their father’s progress and the family praised Dr. Kashani for keeping them informed during a particularly frightening crisis.

Emilio’s condition continued to improve. He was stabilized and ready for a lower level of care.

His discharge from Barlow Respiratory Hospital brought him to an acute rehab facility where he worked further to regain his strength and mobility and to continue to his recovery.

“Thank you Barlow Respiratory Hospital for helping nurse our Dad back to health We will be forever grateful to each and every one of you. Bless you all.”

Emilio returned home in March, in time to play the tooth fairy for his granddaughter, and eager to catch up on all the celebrations he had missed.

After 103 days in the hospital, Christine imagined him watching TV in his favorite lounge chair at home, but knew Emilio would soon be on the go.

“He still has physical therapy and is gaining strength. He loves hanging out, eating barbecue and going to wine tastings. He really loves the outdoors too, like camping with my brother. We love having him home.”

Emilio and family celebrated his 73rd birthday in January 2020 while he was still hospitalized at Barlow Respiratory Hospital. Now that he is home, more celebrations are planned.

Staff Spotlight

I came to Barlow because I understood that Barlow values their nurses. No other profession sees living and dying, and living and illness, every day as we do. We are here because our patients allow us to care for them. They depend on us, and I am proud of doing my best for our patients.

Teamwork makes a big difference in the quality of care. I am proud to be able to see patients who came to us comatose, unable even to open their eyes, and then to see them wean from the ventilator, able to eat and speak and walk again…no other hospital can provide that kind of specialty care.

I’ve been a nurse for 30 years. Now at Barlow I am proud to provide patients the care they deserve and the kind of care I would want my family members to receive. I am in awe of all the staff here. They are caring competent and graceful in the way they work together.

My mom is also an RN and has worked at Barlow LA for 40 years. Barlow is my family. I started just before the pandemic. Our patients were isolated and lonely because families couldn’t visit. They are here for a long time and we get to know them. When patients go home, part of us goes with them.

I started as a student at Barlow 25 years ago, eager, enthusiastic and hungry to learn. My work as a Respiratory Therapist at Barlow is truly satisfying. I witness the miracle of patients restored to their fullest potential. Words I live by: T - Together E- Everyone A - Achieves – M- More

At Barlow, we are all close, we work as a team.

That has changed me. I have grown to look at the whole picture for each patient. I am happy to see patients leave us weaned from the ventilator, without any tubes in them. I am glad to be a part of Barlow’s legacy.

Barlow is small and we work like a family. We provide high quality care with ventilator weaning, respiratory care, wound care and care for medically complex post-ICU patients.

Teamwork is the key. When a patient on the ventilator is being transferred for physical therapy, all of us – RT, RN, OT and PT – are there to help.

At first I was very intimidated by the ventilators, but I was fortunate to have a welcoming night shift team. Barlow keeps us up with innovations and trainings to meet changing needs. With helpful people around you, it makes the challenges memorable, especially seeing COVID-19 patients successfully recover at Barlow.

I see the importance of Barlow because we are here for patients who need help to prepare for the next step of recovery. To see Barlow celebrate 120 years shows the strength of the organization and how much this service is needed. During COVID we had challenges, but I saw our team work together to get the job done for our patients.

At this moment, the community can see how the nursing profession can dramatically change a patient’s life and give them another chance.

Barlow’s long history shows what nursing looked like in the past, and 100 years from now, people will look back to see all we’ve done now.

Especially in ventilator weaning, no other hospital can do what we do.

It’s scary when you’re not able to breathe. Barlow has always focused on respiratory care because it is vital. We have not battled it COVID-19 head-on but are here behind the scenes. Patients come to us to recover. We work as a team so we are never alone, there is help in every corner…for us and for our patients.

I’ve been here 20 years. We admit more medically complex patients now. We care about our patients and our team. During the pandemic, I’m proud that none of our team caught COVID. Despite a nationwide shortage, we had plenty of PPE and training on how to use it properly. We felt reassured and confident.

At Barlow Respiratory Hospital and Barlow Foundation we have faced the COVID-19 pandemic with the resilience you would expect from an organization with over a century of service to Los Angeles. Even though our Foundation team and board members worked mostly from home over the past year, our ReBuild Barlow Campaign remained robust and fruitful. We have raised almost $5 million and our Together Apart event brought supporters and sponsors together for a live-streamed gathering. We are grateful for the continued good health of our team and the generous support for the future Barlow Respiratory Hospital.

Thanks to the generosity of friends, we are able to sustain three vital initiatives designed to improve overall patient care and help us fulfill our mission to the provide the highest quality post-acute care for chronically critically ill and medically complex patients:

– We began work last year on several renovation projects required to facilitate construction of our new hospital, replacing our main hospital building which was built in 1927. Our new hospital will provide much-needed additional space for patients, families, and staff, reflecting the level of expert care our patients deserve and receive. By late fall, we will begin construction on the new hospital and look forward to its completion by the end of 2022. Our Capital Campaign, ReBuild Barlow, has raised $5 million to date on a goal of $8 million to help offset the cost of construction. I have included a copy of our booklet which provides a short overview of Barlow and the importance of the new hospital. Naming opportunities are also included in the back of the brochure.

– Barlow and other hospitals throughout our community consistently face a shortage of qualified registered nurses, potentially restricting access to the specialized care Barlow provides. In the Los Angeles/East Los Angeles area, there are only 433.7 RNs available for every 100,000 persons, which is well below the national 25th percentile ratio of 943 RNs per 100,000. The Barlow Registered Nurse Residency Training Program provides in-depth training to recently graduated registered nurses (RNs) or RN students in their senior year of study. Through this program, RNs gain specialized skills needed to provide exemplary care for the medically complex, ventilated patients Barlow treats. Barlow is perhaps the only area hospital that provides intensive didactic and hands-on training to nursing students and recently graduated nurses, preparing them for employment directly in the ICU setting at Barlow and other hospitals. Generally, new RNs are not hired in the ICU setting and must go through multi-year, experiential training before becoming eligible

Grateful Condolences v Barlow Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing of supporters who participated in our 2020 Together Apart virtual event. Larry King who served as a panelist, died from complications of COVID-19 in 2021. We send our heartfelt condolences and wish Larry’s family the comfort of his memory and of a life well lived. For our Barlow Foundation team, it was an immense joy to get to know Larry in the precious time he shared with us.

As Elysian Park neighbors, we share a special kinship with the Los Angeles Dodgers and appreciate their friendship over the years. Along with the Dodgers and the rest of LA, we mourn the loss of former Dodgers Manager Tommy LaSorda and Sandra Scully, the beloved wife of Vin Scully. We send our sincere condolences to the entire Dodgers Family.

My service to Barlow Respiratory Hospital, where my late mother was cared for with such kindness and dignity, ensures her memory lives on.

She had been hospitalized for many months and was very, very sick. When it was suggested she be transferred to Barlow for additional care, I was willing to try anything to help. Although my mother passed away in 2000, my experience at Barlow made a lasting impression. I spent a lot of time there over the ensuing months. In terms of the equipment and ventilator care, Barlow was head and shoulders above the rest. More important, I was impressed and deeply touched by the attentiveness of the medical staff. They treated my mother as if she were a member of the family, with expert care and a gentle kindness that I had never seen in any other hospital.

Because I was so happy with the care she received, I wanted to give back in some way. I sent a donation and a note to the hospital. The Barlow Foundation contacted me and asked if I would be willing to tell my story. That was in 2002, nearly 20 years ago. My commitment to board service at Barlow Respiratory Hospital is my way of giving back. It honors the memory of my mother.

TOM GIBBONS – New Board Member Barlow Respiratory Hospital is pleased to welcome Tom Gibbons to our Barlow Foundation Board of Directors.

Mr. Gibbons, chief strategy officer for OPTIM Real Estate Services, has over 20 years of experience in the real estate industry with extensive experience in the multifamily/commercial industry. He previously served as vice president of strategic partnerships and director of business development for Legacy Partners. He has extensive operational experience through his time serving as senior manager and regional manager for Greystar, Lincoln Property Company, and Riverstone Residential.

Mr. Gibbons is the founder of OPTIM’s charitable efforts that focus on providing fundraising and financial support to Cedars Sinai Cancer Institute and Barlow Respiratory Hospital. For the past two years, he has raised over $100,000 via the JSM Invitational.

Mr. Gibbons is also an active member of the membership committee for the Apartment Association of Orange County/Riverside County and has also been a supporter of the PTSD Foundation of America, launching their Southern California location in Lake Elsinore. He is a native of Philadelphia, but has resided in Southern California for the past 20 years. Welcome, Tom!

v SAVE THE DATE — SEPTEMBER 27 Golf Tournament Benefits Barlow Barlow Respiratory Hospital will benefit from the annual J. SCOTT MORRISON (JSM) Invitational memorial golf tournament on September 27, 2021.

Scott, a former Barlow Respiratory Hospital patient, was well-loved by his coworkers and professional peers: the JSM Invitational Golf Tournament was established just months after Scott’s death. After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, this marks the tournament’s third year. All proceeds will go to directly to Barlow Respiratory Hospital where Scott received treatment.

About Ventilator Weaning and Disease Specific Certification (DSC) for Respiratory Failure Barlow Respiratory Hospital has specialized in ventilator weaning for over 40 years. In 2016, Barlow Respiratory Hospital was awarded the Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease Specific Certification for Respiratory Failure, becoming the first facility on the West Coast to attain this elite certification. Recertification surveys followed in 2018 with all three Barlow Respiratory Hospital sites anticipating Joint Commission recertification surveys, postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in late 2021.

Our successful Ventilator Weaning Program uses an updated version of our Therapist-Implemented Patient-Specific ‘TIPS ‘ in 2002.

Our weaning success rate has remained consistently higher than other hospitals in the region and in the nation. In 2020, we discharged 225 patients from our Ventilator Weaning Program with more than half of patients weaned in less than two weeks. Since 2008, each year for the past 13 years, Barlow Respiratory Hospital has consistently weaned over half of patients treated in our Ventilator Weaning Program. More than half of patients who wean do so in less than two weeks.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital's weaning success rate is higher as reported in a national long-term acute care database.

The data matter, and the history of award-winning excellence is important. But what does this mean in human terms to our patients and families? Ventilator dependence is not something anyone thinks about in everyday life, at least not until catastrophic illness or injury occurs. When a family member is hospitalized and placed on a ventilator to breathe, the learning curve can be steep and the stakes terrifyingly high. What matters most is that Barlow Respiratory Hospital can be trusted to provide expert post-ICU care. We have a long history of helping our patients breathe on their own again, to recover and return to the lives and the families they love.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital Center for Outcomes & Value Formerly known as the Barlow Respiratory Research Center, our outcomes and health services research has a long history of studying chronically critically ill patient populations. The center is dedicated to improving outcomes and value and openly sharing results with healthcare professional peers to elevate the standard of care for every patient, everywhere.

Our commitment to clinical quality across the full continuum of care is focused on successful patient outcomes reported in our Barlow Respiratory Hospital Outcomes Book. In 2017, Barlow Respiratory Hospital published its first Outcomes Book. The annual publication highlights our unique role in the continuum of adult acute respiratory care, with a focus on patient outcomes.

As pioneers in the care of the chronically critically ill, Barlow Respiratory Hospital has treated and liberated more patients from prolonged mechanical ventilation than any other LTAC hospital in the nation. This high volume has helped the hospital build expertise and develop innovative approaches to treat ventilator-dependent patients, most notably using the hospital’s TIPS© weaning protocol.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital is recognized as the leader in published outcomes research on weaning patients from prolonged mechanical ventilation. Our Center for Outcomes & Value helps to shape health care decisions for patients with ventilator dependency, respiratory failure, and other related diseases in the medically complex patient.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital was the first to publish a protocol specifically for weaning patients from prolonged mechanical ventilation. Barlow’s Therapist-Implemented Patient Specific TIPS© Protocol was developed by Barlow pulmonologists using evidence-based medicine. The protocol continues to be referenced by health care professionals and widely adopted by other hospitals.

Barlow Respiratory Research Center led the Ventilation Outcomes Study, the first and only multicenter study of weaning outcomes at long-term acute care hospitals. Barlow Respiratory Research Center served as the Primary Research Site and Data Coordinating Center for the 23-hospital study.

In 2020, Barlow Respiratory Hospital continued this tradition of leadership by being the first to publish a paper on COVID-19 survivors admitted to an LTAC hospital.

As the only not-for-profit long-term acute care hospital in California, Barlow is recognized for excellence in treating medically complex patients dependent on a ventilator to breathe and is committed to preserving access to continued intensive care of the highest quality for patients.

For our annual staff spotlight series, we spoke with several Barlow Respiratory Hospital nurses and respiratory therapists.

Nurses Katrina Mendoza, RN and Ariel Loop, RN work at Barlow Respiratory Hospital Los Angeles, and exemplify our team work ethic. They describe themselves as inseparable. “We share a work philosophy, we trust one another,”says Katrina. Despite being on different shifts — Katrina works night shift and Ariel works days — they work closely together, reporting to each other at the beginning and end of their shifts to collaborate on projects and processes. “We are here to help our patients and we are here for one another,” says Ariel. “There are different pressures. We find balance.”

Ariel agrees. “It is important to have specialized care. All of our patients come from the ICU. Often the previous hospital has not had time to prepare them for what to expect at Barlow. They might think weaning means they’ll just take the trach out and turn off the ventilator and then they’ll get up and go home. But it’s not that easy.

We work to establish trust, and explain the process. So many families come to us with unrealisticexpectations. When they know what to expect, we can have better outcomes.”

“Care doesn’t end on a shift basis so being part of a team is important. We have a shared responsibility. We have people’s lives in our hands. This pandemic has highlighted the need for long-term care hospitals like Barlow. Patients who survived COVID-19 come to us because they need additional care. Trust is a big thing. There is a need for us.”

“I came here as a student and never left. The first person I met was Dr. Nelson. I came in and there he was combing a patient’s hair. I was confused. But then I learned he’s always doing these sweet things. Combing patients’ hair, putting lotion on. I was really impressed by that. It is a part of who we are. I like the small community here. We can rely on having someone on our side.

Katrina and Ariel are both charge nurses, in roles that shape the teams they work with. “It is satisfying to see newer nurses progress,” says Katrina. “We both guide newer staff. There are a lot of learning opportunities here,” says Ariel. “As a team, we both think into the future, like ordering supplies to have enough for the next shift too.”

And as individual nurses on the front lines of care, Katrina and Ariel are a part of a team that helps our patients recover to reclaim their futures and their lives. Thank you, team!

A Place of History and Potential Tamas Dolinay, M.D.

I first walked the premises of the Barlow Respiratory Hospital main campus in 2019. Amit Mohan, Barlow’s President and CEO, invited a group of doctors from UCLA to visit the site in anticipation of working together. I had heard about the long history of the hospital from colleagues, but when I got out of my car by the library, I was truly amazed that this place could exist in the otherwise dusty and bustling city. There was peace, green and calm. I walked from the parking lot to the cafeteria, where I was instantly greeted and asked how I could be helped — another unusual event in this self-absorbed big city. As I passed among the old pavilions, it reminded me of my upbringing. I grew up in the plains of Hungary surrounded by buildings from previous centuries. Every street, every bench, every corner could tell stories of generations of greatness and struggle. This is how I felt at Barlow. It is a point where the knowledge of the past meets the demands of the future. It is a place full of history and potential.

Probably the most amazing thing I learned was that Barlow was one of the first hospitals in town. During the past century it served the needs of Los Angeles as the city grew from a small town to a metropolis. It was a sanatorium during the tuberculosis area, served as an AIDS hospital, has been a rehabilitation hospital. Now it cares for those who survived the COVID pandemic.

This really speaks to me about the importance of Barlow, not only in the history of medicine but also for its future in this city. As Los Angeles continues to thrive, Barlow will be needed to serve those who live here.

I am an immigrant to this city, like many who work at Barlow. I find it is one of the most accepting and friendly

workplaces that I have known.

The camaraderie of the Barlow employees makes this place one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the country and a great place to work. We are working hard to meet the challenges of the future at Barlow. We work together to develop better and more efficient ways to achieve recovery for those who have been critically ill. We learn and teach how to rehabilitate patients with complex medical problems. This is a neglected, but largely needed field of medicine as the population continues to age in our country.

I have been a practicing physician for the past 20 years working at various hospitals in many countries. Pulmonary medicine is my specialty, but prior to my arrival at Barlow, I found my work experiences to be stagnating. Being at Barlow has been a welcome learning experience. It is a humbling place where one meets some of the biggest challenges in medicine. I rediscovered the art, rather than just the science, of ventilator weaning. I also embraced the emotional struggles and joys of helping chronically ill people finally return to their home and lives.

I believe Barlow has a bright future which builds on the history of the generations for whom it has cared. I hope to continue to work together to treat and care for those who survive a life-changing hospitalization and who see this hospital as a sign of hope for recovery.

– Thanks to modern medicine, people are living longer with chronic and advanced illness. Medical care and most medical facilities are oriented toward prolongation of life, often without consideration of alternate care goals or integration of patient preferences into medical decision-making. Barlow’s palliative care program focuses on providing whole-patient, goal-directed care for the chronically and potentially terminally ill. Unique in the long-term care setting, this is an interdisciplinary program that provides expert patient/family education and consultation, as well as compassionate care from a multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, nurses, social workers, case managers, and more.

Together, these measures play an integral role in making sure we can continue providing the award-winning care for which Barlow is known. Nearly 100 hospital intensive care units (ICUs) throughout Southern and Central California trust Barlow’s expertise and refer their sickest patients to us for care.
