Majolica Mania: Transatlantic Pottery in England and the United States, 1850–1915 Majolica Mania: Transatlantic Pottery in England and the United States, 1850–1915 is the first comprehensive study of the most important ceramic innovation of the nineteenth century. Colorful, wildly imaginative, and technically innovative, majolica was both functional and aesthetic. The subject matter of this three-volume catalogue reflects a range of Victorian preoccupations, from botany and zoology to popular humor and the macabre. What is Research? Research underlies nearly every aspect of our culture, with expansive investment poured into it and its significance acknowledged by governments, industries, and academic institutions around the world. Yet the idea, practice, and social life of research have not been subjects of study. Of the 164 million items in the catalog of the Library of Congress, only forty-three fall into the category of “Research— History.” To begin the task of understanding research as both concept and practice, Bard Graduate Center gathered a group of artists, scientists, and humanists—all recipients of MacArthur “genius” grants—for three evenings of discussion moderated by its dean, Peter N. Miller, who is also a MacArthur Fellow. Sheila Hicks: Weaving as Metaphor Recipient of the Gold Medal for the “Most Beautiful Book in the World” Prize given at the Leipzig Book Fair, awarded to designer Irma Boom. This intriguing book examines the small woven and wrought works that the artist Sheila Hicks has produced for fifty years. With their distinctive colors, thoughtful compositions, and narratives, these miniature creations reveal the emergence and continuity of the artist’s approach to her work. Internationally recognized for her mastery of a textile vocabulary of extremely different scales—sculpture, tapestry, site-specific commissions for public spaces, environments of recuperated clothing and uniforms, and more—Hicks has thoughtfully crafted miniatures throughout her nomadic career. The palm-sized works present a record of her remarkable and personal journeys. Focusing on some one hundred miniatures from public and private collections, the book demonstrates the breadth of Hicks’s concerns: her persistent inquiry into the mysteries of color, her playful yet reverential subversions of weaving traditions, her surprising range of materials, and her exploration of new technology. From initial experiments based on pre-Columbian weaving structures to a 2005 sculptural project using ninety colors of synthetic filaments, these small works offer a unique opportunity to access and examine the artist’s conceptual and technical forays. Artek and the Aaltos: Creating a Modern World Winner of the 2018 “Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award,” presented by the Society of Architectural Historians. Named a 2016 “50 Books | 50 Covers Award” winner by the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Design), the professional association for design.
The Finnish design firm Artek is best known as the producer and distributor of Modernist bentwood furniture designed by Alvar Aalto (1898–1976). However, its mission was more complex and multifaceted, grounded in the notion that art and design could enhance everyday life. Artek and the Aaltos showcases more than three hundred objects, including furniture, glassware, lighting, design sketches, drawings, textile swatches, and photographs. Most of the material is published here for the first time. It contextualizes the contributions of Artek, and those of its founders, Alvar and his wife, Aino Marsio Aalto (1894–1949), providing evidence for their close professional partnership as well as critical interpretations of their major projects. It also considers individuals such as Maija Heikenheimo, whose career at Artek spanned three decades. In addition, this book examines the Aaltos’ advocacy for the use of standardized forms within the Artek product line and the parameters of the company’s mission. Richard Tuttle: What is the Object? is an exploration of the meaning of objects for the contemporary American artist Richard Tuttle. The objects are his, objects that he has collected over the past five decades. The questions are his, too: What do these objects mean to him, to his art-making practice, and to his thinking about art? Tuttle’s questioning extends to include exhibition furniture, which he designed and which resembles the sculptures he has made throughout his career. Is this the object? Or are objects limited to those things that rest upon it? Berlin and its museums have been at the center of museum thinking for the last hundred years. Debates about the role and structure of museums played out in 1907 and 1910 with two striking series of articles that appeared in the journal Museumskunde: Journal for the Administration and Technology of Public and Private Collections. The exhibition is a meaning-generating activity; it is a way for the artist to learn about his own work. As Tuttle himself explains, “where a piece from the collection enters the art work is a big moment. It is a way of asking myself, why do I collect these things? I know them deeply and they can go into my work. And they can be there for another person.” Which is another way of asking: What is the object? Finally, this same question is, by extension, one that we can all ask of our own objects and those we see around us. This is an exhibition about Richard Tuttle as artist and collector, and also as teacher.
This provocative volume revisits the traditional notions of conservation and museum collecting that were developed over the centuries to suit a conception of art as static, fixed, and permanent objects. Conservators and museums increasingly struggle with issues of conservation for works created from the mid-twentieth to the twenty-first century that are unstable over time. The contributors ask what it means to conserve artworks that fundamentally address and embody the notion of change and, through this questioning, guide us to reevaluate the meaning of art, of objects, and of materiality itself. Object—Event—Performance considers a selection of post-1960s artworks that have all been chosen for their instability, changeability, performance elements, and processes that pose questions about their relationship to conservation practices.

In order to rethink early Jewish American women’s lives, The Art of the Jewish Family examines five objects owned by Jewish women who lived at least a portion of their lives in early New York between 1750 and 1850. Each chapter creates a biography of a single woman through her object, but also uses her story to shed light on larger changes in Jewish American women’s lives. The women Leibman discusses are diverse: some rich, some poor; some Sephardi, some Ashkenazi; some born enslaved, and some who were slave owners themselves. In creating these biographies, Leibman proposes a new methodology for early American Jewish women’s history, one that could be applied to other areas in Jewish history for which records on women are sparse. This method looks at both material objects and fragmentation as important evidence for understanding the past. What social and religious structures, Leibman asks, caused early Jewish women to disappear from the archives?
