ABOUT THE CONFERENCE The ninth annual “Get Engaged: Student Action and Youth Leadership Conference” brings together 55 students and 33 staff mentors from across the Open Society University Network of partner institutions, including Al-Quds Bard College of Arts and Sciences (AQB), Ashesi University (Ashesi) (Ghana), American University of Beirut (AUB) (Lebanon), American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) (Bulgaria), American University of Central Asia (AUCA) (Kyrgyzstan), Bard College (Bard) (USA), Bard College Berlin (BCB) (Germany), Brac University (Brac) (Bangladesh), Central European University (CEU) (Vienna), Dadaab Refugee Complex (HUBS) (Kenya), European Humanities University (EHU) (Lithuania), Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV) (Vietnam), National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) (Taiwan), Tuskegee University (Tuskegee) (USA), Haitian Education & Leadership Program (UHelp) (Haiti), Universidad de los Andes (UniAndes) (Colombia), and University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) (South Africa).

Organized by the Centers for Civic Engagement at AUCA and Bard College and in partnership with coordinators from across the Open Society University Network. The conference focuses on strengthening the global network of student leaders who use the liberal arts as a creative tool to address challenging issues in their communities.

The conference exposes students to a wide range of ideas and experiences to help them lead community-based projects more effectively. “Get Engaged” is a venue for students to share experiences, learn new skills, hone leadership styles, and network with international partners. The conference is an inspirational and practical space that encourages young people to grow into their roles as agents for change.

ABOUT THE OPEN SOCIETY UNIVERSITY NETWORK The Open Society University Network (OSUN) envisions a new model of global higher education—a long-lasting network with deep partnerships among diverse institutions committed to addressing global challenges collaboratively. The network is global in demographic and geographic scope and extends to places where it is needed most. It strives to integrate curricula and research across institutions and to incorporate civic engagement into higher education.

With a belief in the public purpose of higher education, civic engagement across OSUN promotes best practices and bold new initiatives to help students, faculty, and institutions realize their full potential as community actors and educators.

Ghulam Sakhi Ataye, A Community in Crisis Responds to shifts volunteering to meet community needs while in crisis.

Nurmukamad Turkbaev, Central Asian Nomad Youth Leadership Implements workshops, debate tournaments, conferences and civic engagement for the leadership development of youth living in rural areas at the border of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Saliya Khurova, Basketball for All Creates an inclusive world for children with disabilities and down syndrome through regular basketball practices, training sessions and team building organized with college and high school student mentors.

BARD COLLEGE Sydney Williams, The Me in Foundation Cultivates the next generation of industry movers, storytellers, and creative thinkers through arts-accessible programming.

Symonne Reid, Gilson Place A safe space for students of color on Bard Annandale’s campus focused on providing a “home away from home” that includes programming, congregating, learning, and simply being.

BRAC UNIVERSITY Srijan Banik, Alokdhenu Creating informal libraries to encourage young students to share books (both fiction and nonfiction), ideas and critical thinking.

Ahshan Labby, Newspaper Olympiad With the motto of “Read a Newspaper, Gain Knowledge ‘’ this initiative promotes the habit of reading newspapers to learn.

Halima Hasin, Paper Cranes of Venus Raises awareness about gender equality and discrimination, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), menstrual health and consent while providing training on digital literacy and tie-dying to women from the Bihari Community in Bangladesh (one of the most marginalized communities) to ensure sustainable development through self-employment.

Faiaz Zahin, Plant Some or Lose All! This campaign encourages individuals of Dhaka Cantonment and its adjacent areas to plant a seedling or a plant in their immediate surroundings.

CENTRAL EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY Nellya Dzhamanbaeva, Speak Out Through Art Students of CEU’s Cultural Heritage Studies Program are teamed up with Vienna-based artist, AYGYUL, to deliver workshop for students at Mittelschule Absberggasse, inviting them to look into their family’s heritage.

Anna Fasching, Nice to CEU You! This project creates perspectives for middle school children from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education through connecting them with a university.

Subham Manandhar, Udvar Festival Deconstructing social divisions through dancing, music and more, in a 3-day festival that brings people from different countries and cultures together.

EUROPEAN HUMANITIES UNIVERSITY Yana Kandratsyeva, Tactile Book for the Blind Creative book-making that includes tactile objects, this project encourages creativity and an interest in reading for blind and visually impaired children.

Yana Taratun, Psychology of Migration Among Students: Trauma Relief Perspective Create at least a theoretical platform for reforming the education system in relation to foreign students.

FULBRIGHT UNIVERSITY VIETNAM Nguyên Dăng Thi Tháo, Bahnar Tomb House Statue Program Conservation of the Bahnar Tomb House through preservation of the Tomb House statues and the ancient sculpture arts supported through research, awareness and training.

NATIONAL SUN YAT-SEN UNIVERSITY Yichun Weng, Dialogue Between Architecture and City Using media and podcast storytelling to raise awareness about the importance of architecture in engaging local people and society.

TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY Crystal Hall and Adaria Ooten-Groves, The Tuskegee Greenwood Project, The Tuskegee – Macon County Community Foundation is a public charity organization that plays a vital role in addressing civic and public challenges. The purpose of the Foundation is to enhance the quality of life in rural and other communities facing economic and social challenges through its history.

Destiny Thompson, Social Services during the Covid-19 Pandemic Unpacks how social workers and interns managed.

UHELP Bessy Marie-Aure Jeudilus, Teach Lead Change A mentoring program that provides training in leadership, pedagogy, and financial education to uncertified teachers in Pétion-Ville, Haiti.

Staël Toussaint, Youth Initiative for Professional Development (Y.I.P.D) Fighting poverty through training young, aspiring professionals from Mariani and linking them to the labor market.

OSUN GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT FELLOWS Abdul Walid Azizi, AUCA Senior student at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), majoring in International and Comparative Politics and minoring in Literature and History, Access micro-scholarship alumnus of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul and the organizer & director of Summer Camp Afghanistan 2018 and 2019.

Sayed Anwar Ibrahimi, AUCA Second year Software Engineering student at the American University of Central Asia, implementing projects that focus on issues that the community of Afghan students face and experience while integrating into new institutions and societies, in particular the evacuated students from American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) now at other OSUN institutions.

Lorraine Makuyana, Ashesi University Senior at Ashesi University studying Computer Engineering, the Founder and President of My Vision Initiative, an organization that empowers young women and girls to pursue personal and professional development, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

Henry Mielarczyk, Bard College Our Revolution Bard is a progressive political group focused on supporting progressive grassroots campaigns at the state and local level.

Rokhila Saidasanova, AUCA Founder of social non-profit projects such as “No to bullying in Tajik schools,” as well as cofounder of the Sociological Club AWAKE at AUCA. Aidin Turganbekov, AUCA Basketball for All seeks to create an inclusive space for children with autism and Down syndrome and spread the spirit through AUCA students who volunteer and work one-on-one with children on campus.

Huy Vu Duc, Fulbright University Vietnam YUU Organization is a youth-led non-profit organization working to empower ethnic minority children and youth in the Central Highlands of Vietnam through education, employment, and cultural conservation since 2017 that follows the servant leadership model, inspired by Mother Teresa.

OSUN GLOBAL COMMONS EDITORIAL TEAM: Global Commons is a new student-run online multimedia publication. Supported by OSUN, this studentcentric publication presents an array of writing and visual content on issues related to Human Rights, Global Justice, Global Public Health, Arts and Society, Sustainability and Climate, Inequalities, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
