The Little Princess wants to write it by herself!

ESA Spotlight In a town filled with laughter, there was a beautiful little princess. One day, the little princess heard about a big drama performance called ECUTION. Her eyes got big with curiosity, and she wanted to know what all the excitement was about.

Following the sounds, the little princess walked to the festival. There, although the performances ended a while ago, bright colors and lively music surrounded her still.

In between the crowd, the little princess met two gorgeous women adorned in an elegant batik cloth. Her face lit up, and she asked the first woman named Malika Callula, “I see that ECUTION 2023 is quite majestic. What impression do you feel during ECUTION 2023?”

With a genuine smile, she answered, “I was enthusiastic, but most of the time I was anxious.

Since ECUTION was my first big project, I was determined to make it perfect. It wasn't an easy road, of course, I faced so many hardships and turbulences along the way. There was even a point where I was thinking about quitting this project. However, having Acel as my Chief Executive and as my partner in almost every aspect helps me in a way I could never imagine. I somehow felt more relieved and positive. And in the end, we make it work.” Little princess nodded in understanding. She then turned to ask the other woman, Maria Marselina, whose eyes twinkled in excitement. “What about you? Is there any valuable reason that you hold dearly?” She responded, “I've learned a lot. Preparing a theatrical event as well as a college orientation is a complex task. There are numerous aspects to consider, from planning to management.

Not to mention that we try to introduce some innovative concepts in this year's ECUTION. Fortunately, I had the greatest team of all time, and it was a pleasure working with them.

Unexpected obstacles occasionally arose, but we always found our way to overcome them.

I must also mention the incredible talents of the new students, from actors to backstage crews. It was truly remarkable, considering they are new to the world of English Literature. I'm pleased to see that this year's ECUTION is quite memorable for everyone.”

With a heart full of joy, the little princess thanked Malika Callula and Maria Marselina, and went home. “I’m sure ECUTION 2024 will be off the charts. I really can’t wait to see the magic!”

Before the women left the building, they sent greetings to new students through the little princess. Let’s check out their messages!

Maria Marselina: I hope they can develop the talents they discovered through ECUTION, pass them on to others, and take pride in wherever their journey leads. It would be truly fulfilling.

Malika Callula: First, my hope for all my ECUTION personnel is that you are able to learn one or two about working in a big team setting and to exercise your problem-solving skills. I hope that ECUTION can give you a meaningful experience and give you an opportunity to explore yourself more, in terms of self-improvement. And for the first-year students, I hope that you feel motivated by seeing your seniors who have taken part in ECUTION 2023 and to continue our legacy. That's all from me, best of luck to all of my juniors! Know that I'm so proud of all of you.

ESA Corner Ever wondered about studying abroad? There are so many scholarship programs to facilitate you. One of them is IISMA. IISMA is a scholarship program by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to fund Indonesian students to spend one semester at top and reputable universities and industries around the world.

Are you curious about how the awardees spend their lives there? Or about their preparation for IISMA? Gather up and let’s read their answers!

Q: After all the hard work and achievements, how do you celebrate your wins?

A: Usually I treat myself to special things that I don't usually buy on a day to day basis. If I'm feeling like it, I usually go wander around the city alone to find fun stuff to do as a reward Yahu, ‘21

Royhan, ‘20 Q: When you’re feeling bored, what do you usually do to refresh your mind?

A: Studying abroad is very challenging. For me, the most challenging part is when I need to refresh my mind after attending lecture, workshop, and seminar. What I usually do is watching films with my friends. I'm an extrovert, so being with my friends energises me. I could sit with them for hours just to charge my energy. Back in Indonesia, I usually go to 'Majlis', but as I couldn't do it here, I choose to sit with my flatmates in the kitchen, talking about interesting and fascinating things for hours.

Q: If you could go back to the days of preparing for IISMA, what's one thing you would like to tell yourself back then?

A: Hmm.. I think the one thing I'd tell my old self would be preparing IISMA in advance. I felt like I didn't have enough time preparing it when I applied earlier this year. I'd also suggest myself, and all of you really, to keep being updated with the program because there's lot of information that can be accessed through various platforms.

What’s On ESA

Encompass ENCOMPASS (English National Competition of Performance, Art, and Social Speaking) is like a super cool contest organized by the English Literature study program at Universitas Brawijaya. It's a chance for English Literature students in Indonesia to show off their skills in editing, professional acting, and win awesome prizes. There are several competitions you can be a part of.

First, there's the Social Media Educational Content Creator competition. Here, you use social media to educate and engage with a bigger audience about humanities.

Next up is the News Casting competition. Participants act like a professional news anchor and share informative news based on the given theme.

If you enjoy making everyday vlogs, the Feature Video Vlogging competition is for you! It's a great way to showcase your creativity by making vlog videos.

Poetry Performance is another cool competition. It focuses on your ability to read, recite, act, or perform poetry for the audience.

Last but not least, there's the Drama Performance competition. Here, you explore the mix of drama and technology in a captivating way. If you love playing different characters and want to get really good at it, then this is just the thing for you!

This competition is an awesome opportunity for English literature students to express and develop your talents. Plus, you might get some cool prizes as feedback for your hard work. Care to join?

We asked 3 juniors about their impressions toward our major, student orientation (ECUTION), and their favorite subject. Let's read their answers below!

1. Unique and chill. I thought it’d be hectic and stressful but actually it’s the opposite. I enjoy being one of the English literature students because I get to meet lots of people who share the same interests as me. so it wasn’t hard for me to find my place in the english literature community.

2. It was sooo much fun!!! I'm very sad that it ends that fast.. I got a lot of new experience, I got to make some new friends and made a good bond with the peeps. ecution 2023 is gonna be one of my most memorable things in my life, I could never forget it FR! 3. It was very much fun!!! I really enjoy studying them a lot (or maybe because i'm still in the first semester idk) but it’s easy for me to learn all of the lessons along with the lecturer. That makes the lessons more enjoyable with the way they’re delivering the lessons to us.

1. My first impression of the English Literature department was quite fun. I thought the vibe would be nerve-wrecking since I'm not really good at English. But the vibe was fun and interesting and I am grateful to be part of an English Literature student.

2. The Ecution 2023 was amazing! It was more than fun. Though it was exhausting for me, I really enjoyed every event of Ecution 2023.

3. Not every subject is fun for me, especially the paragraph writing. But I do enjoy studying the Pronunciation and Listening subject.

1. My first impression of being an English literature student is that I finally feel like I belong because here, I'm surrounded by things I love, things I'm interested in, and people who share the same interests as me, and I'm beyond grateful for it.

2. One of the best experiences in my life, if I must say. I learned new things, tried new things, made friends with a bunch of amazing people, discovered new potentials within myself that I never knew I had before, and had lots of fun! I was super sad when it ended. :( 3. They're not bad so far, I do enjoy most of them and am willing to learn more!

he Alchemist

If I could mention one book that has so many life lessons inside, I would always go with this book: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The Alchemist was first published thirty years ago, about a boy named Santiago who sets on a long journey from Spain to the Pyramids , dreaming about a magical place in pursuit of some unknown treasure. The Alchemist might be one of the slow-paced books that you would like to avoid reading, but trust me, there are so many things—even the smallest thing you’ve ever thought of—that you can learn from this book. Here’s my favourite part and the one that I hold close ever since: “...and when each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises”. I realised that it’s human nature to feel sad about how monotonous our lives can be, but, how good will our lives be if we can find the light between the agony?

Enough talk about the excerpt… I’ll tell you things that you might like from this book.

Though it’s quite a fantasy-fiction kind of genre, this book tells a lot about love and devotion, about dreams and finding yourself between so many choices, about taking risks and facing fear, and after all, about hearing what your heart says. I won’t lie about how beautiful Paulo Coelho wrote the whole story.

I love how he makes everything so soothing and promising. It’s almost like listening to a motivator’s words.

However, like what people always said, there will always be a good to a bad and a bad to a good.

The Alchemist is too slow-paced for me. I can finish it in a sit, but it just feels too slow. There are too many repeated messages and somehow I feel like some of the messages are quite unrealistic compared to how our lives usually work. The ending had me staring at the wall not because I felt speechless, but because I felt rather unsatisfied. You’ll probably know why after you finish reading it ;)
