After decades of compiling facts, figures, and records about high school athletics, my file research has been cut in half thanks to the brilliance of prep historian Leland Barclay.

Barclay has just published a high school sport buff’s dream; the Almanac of Arkansas High School Football.

For decades, this kind of information has been available for professional and college football teams, but there was no compiled reference source for high school sports.

This book is unique.

The book not only recaps the current season, but as a special bonus will allow its readers the opportunity to recap the high school seasons dating back to 1955. That includes conference standings, All-Star selections and state playoff results.

Remember the Little Rock Central-Little Rock Hall Thanksgiving Day classics? You can take a stroll back into the past with the Tigers and the Warriors.

Barton won four straight Class A state championships, and played in four consecutive title games.

N f  E The state of Arkansas is one of only a few states without a professional sports team to capture the fancy of sports fanatics, which probably explains the love affair that the state has with high school football.

The beauty of high school football is the fervor and passion that the players display every autumn Friday night across the state. High school football is the last step where the players simply play the game for fun. It is to the players that this book is dedicated.

Naturally, thanks are in order to the fine newspapers across the state that cover their area teams with relentless pursuit. Newspapers that were helpful in the research for this book include the Southwest Times Record of Fort Smith, Northwest Arkansas Times of Fayetteville, Log Cabin Democrat of Conway, Courier-Democrat of Russellville, Morning News of Springdale, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette of Little Rock, Jonesboro Sun, Pine Bluff Commercial, Texarkana Gazette and Malvern Daily Record.

The Associated Press and the Arkansas Activities Association have also contributed mightily to high school athletics in this state for decades and were also very helpful and cooperative.

Thanks are also due Wadie Moore for writing the forward. Wadie, as everyone knows, is the premier authority on Arkansas high school sports. He began covering high school sports in the mid-1960s, and it was his coverage that elevated it to the level that it enjoys today.

The Bryant Hornets and head coach Buck James completed a perfect season with a 27-17 win over North Little Rock for the Class 7A championship before 7,828 at War Memorial Stadium.

Bryant finished the season 13-0 for its third-straight state title, marking the first three-peat in the state’s largest classification since Pine Bluff in 19931995.

“I told our coaches that I know how good one felt and how good two felt, I couldn’t imagine how three’s going to feel,” James said. “We’ve got a chance to four-peat. That gives these guys in the offseason a chance to come back and do some great things themselves. It leaves a legacy. That’s what high school athletics should be about.”

The Hornets also finished the season with a 30-game winning streak, the longest in the state’s largest classification since Little Rock High, and Central, won 35 straight from 1955 into 1958.

Bryant started the season No. 1 in the Arkansas Sports Media Poll, stayed No. 1 throughout and finished at the top to become the first team to do that since the legendary Springdale Bulldogs of 2005.

“I saw them play,” James said. “They were a very good football team. The thing I’m proud of is we’ve done it three times in a row. They did it once. They did it with a bunch of college football players. We did it with a bunch of good high school football players.”

GREENWOOD 49, LAKE HAMILTON 24 Attendance 4,235 • Clear 50 degrees • 6:40 p.m. • Time 2:30 DECEMBER 5, LITTLE ROCK — The Greenwood Bulldogs recorded a perfect 10 for the season.

Greenwood was perfect in 14 games in winning its 10th state championship with a convincing 49-24 win over Lake Hamilton for the Class 6A state title before 4,235 at War Memorial Stadium.

The perfect season was in Chris Young’s first as a head coach after being elevated in February after just a week to take over for Rick Jones, who won eight state championships before leaving for a football consultant’s role for the University of Missouri and head coach Eli Drinkwitz.

Young served on the coaching staff on all nine previous championship teams but was the athletic director at Cabot for 10 days in April, 2019, before returning to Greenwood to resume his role as offensive coordinator for Jones.

The 10 championships are the most for any program during the modern playoff era, which began in 1968. All of Greenwood’s titles are since Greenwood’s first in 2000 under Ronnie Peacock, who hired Young as an assistant junior high coach before Harv Welch moved Young up to the high school staff in 2001.

Young quickly joined legendary status with his dad, Joe Fred Young, as just the fourth father-son duo to win state titles along with Bill and Scott Reed, Jim and Bo Hembree, and C.W. and Bill Keopple.

“That’s pretty cool,” Chris Young said. “I’m really proud of the things my dad did and the reputation he has. To be able to share this with him is very special.”

PULASKI ACADEMY 64, LITTLE ROCK CHRISTIAN 27 Attendance 3,719 • Sunny 58 degrees • Kickoff noon • Time 2:43 DECEMBER 12, LITTLE ROCK — Pulaski Academy made more history with yet another state championship.

The Bruins won their ninth state championship, all under Kevin Kelley, with a 64-27 win over Little Rock Christian for the Class 5A crown in front of 3,719 at War Memorial Stadium.

The nine straight titles is the most for a head coach during the modern playoff era, which began in 1968, and is behind only legendary Wilson Matthews, who won 10 championships during an 11year span at Little Rock High and Central from 1947 to 1957.

Kelley left in May following the Bruins’ state championship season for a collegiate position as the head coach at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, on May 7.

The Bruins won their ninth championship in their usual manner, recovering four on-side kicks in the first half by Futa Shinkawa twice, and Ben Smiley, and Cooper White.

Pulaski Academy lost a fumble after recovering the first kickoff of the game, but scored after the other three for a 21point swing.

The Bruins conversely had eight firsthalf possessions compared to just four

by Little Rock Christian that led to a 4313 lead at the half.

Pulaski Academy also did not punt in the game, nor all season, and converted 5-of-6 fourth-down tries in the game despite averaging 5.5 yards per fourthdown distance to go.

Senior Nolen Bruffett earned the start in the championship game and threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns to finish with 2,140 yards and 24 scoring passes for the season.

SHILOH CHRISTIAN 58, RIVERCREST 20 Attendance 2,156 • Cloudy 45 degrees • Kickoff noon • Time 2:37 DECEMBER 19, LITTLE ROCK — The Shiloh Christian Saints were both methodical and succinct.

The Saints scored on all five first-half possessions and their first seven in all while rolling to a 58-20 win over Rivercrest in the Class 4A championship game at War Memorial Stadium before a crowd of 2,156.

The championship is the eighth for Shiloh Christian and first for head coach Jeff Conaway, who is the fourth head coach to take the Saints to the title to join Gus Malzahn (1998, 1999), Chris Wood (2001) and Josh Floyd (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010).

Shiloh Christian lost just one game during the season and that was to Oklahoma’s Sand Springs.

The Saints led the state in scoring with 702 points and did it in a variety of ways with 60 rushing touchdowns, 25 passing, seven special teams and six from the defense.

The Saints finished with 518 yards of offense with a balance of 239 passing and 279 rushing.

Shiloh Christian had scoring drives of 13, 11 and 14 plays, covering 63, 65 and 84 yards. The Saints also had two scoring drives of just one play each.

Senior quarterback Caden Sipe, whose jersey number of 17 adds up to eight, threw a state-record eight touchdown passes to lead the Wildcats to their eighth state championship with a record-breaking 71-44 win over McGehee before 2,598 at War Memorial Stadium.

Harding Academy’s championships span five decades with titles in 1976 and 1977, 1983, 2002, 2012, 2015, 2019 and now 2020.

The Wildcats set a record with their 71 points in the modern playoff era, which began in 1968.

The two teams also set a record with the combined 115 points, beating the 111 scored in 2006 in Greenwood’s 5655 win over Pulaski Academy.

McGehee survived a brutal half of the playoff bracket with wins over Bismarck, Lincoln, Prescott and Hoxie, which were a combined 32-11, to get to War Memorial Stadium. Prescott and Hoxie were both undefeated.

“There’s no question their side of the bracket was tremendous so for them to get here like they did and the way they played, how much class they have and how they play is second to none,” Harding Academy head coach Neil Evans said. “For us to do this back-toback is a difficult task and then on top of the pandemic makes that much sweeter.”

Sipe completed 22-of-27 passes to set a state record with 81.5 completion percentage as well as his eight touchdown passes.

The Redbugs won their secondstraight Class 2A championship with a 35-32 win over Des Arc in a battle of unbeatens before 3,572 at War Memorial Stadium.

Fordyce finished 15-0 while Des Arc wound up 13-1.

Ja’Quez Cross and Gary Lewis provided the Redbugs with a lethal 1-2 punch.

Cross, who was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player a day after turning 18, ran 17 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns while Lewis added 11 carries for 108 yards and two scores.

“It’s a great feeling to get out here and do this with my team and for my community,” Cross said. “I give God thanks because without him I wouldn’t be in the position I am now. God blessed us that we were able to play every week.”

Cross had scoring jaunts of 41 yards in the first quarter, 55 yards in the third quarter and 46 yards in the fourth quarter.

His final scoring run with 5:56 left in the game put Fordyce up, 35-20. Cross took the handoff around the right side, had the ball knocked loose at the 28, picked it up at the 16 perfectly in stride and scored.

“What I had to do was wait for it to bounce, and I was good,” Cross said. “I put it up to brace for the hit, and he hit it in the perfect spot. Thank God I got to get back on it and get it into the end zone.”

Lewis ran for touchdowns of 43 yards and 30 yards, both in the second quarter.

We would have the dive covered and the quarterback covered, but wouldn’t have the pitch covered. Then the next time, we wouldn’t have the quarterback covered. That was what worried us more than anything.”

Des Arc had 60 rushes for 293 yards and held a whopping time-of-possession advantage with 32:04.

“I’m so proud of the way they fought in the second half,” Des Arc head coach B.J. Paschal said. “We knew they were so much faster than us at every position. Their backfield is amazing, and those O-linemen they’re huge up front.”

Cross also had 12 solo tackles to lead Fordyce on defense at strong safety.

Cross finished his career with 58 touchdowns, rushing for 1,100 yards and 23 touchdowns during his senior season. He finished his career with 29 rushing scores, 24 receiving, one kickoff return, three interception returns, and a fumble return.

Brown also wrapped up a stellar career with 79 touchdown passes and 37 rushing scores. He threw for 6,461 yards and rushed for 1,442 yards in his career.

All four players in Des Arc’s backfield nearly had 1,000 yards for the season with Trevor Reed finishing with 1,061 yards and 14 touchdowns, Eyan Hollway with 1,036 and 15 scores, Jack Kearby with 975 and 11 touchdowns and Luke Morton with 905 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Pff Hgg 2020 scored seven touchdowns in the first half and rolled to a 56-14 win over Conway in the semifinals behind Austin 7reame A Bryant Ledbetter’s four touchdown passes with Jamarien Bracey and Tanner Anderson each rushing for two scores. KaCotton scored on a 32-yard run with 17 seconds left to lift North Little Rock to a 49-42 win over Cabot in the other

semifinal, which featured all four teams from the 7A-Central. Bryant accounted for 502 yards in a 48-22 win over Springdale Har-Ber in the second round with Ledbetter throwing for 336 yards and five scores, four of which were to Hayden Schrader.

North Little Rock had no trouble against Little Rock Catholic with Cotton rushing for 176 yards and two scores in a 34-7 win.

Little Rock Central won on an odd ending, 37-35, at Fayetteville when Harry Wikoff booted a 29-yard field goal as time expired after Fayetteville took a knee on fourth down prematurely with two seconds left, which stopped the clock on the change of possession.

Greenwood applied the mercy rule for the third-straight week of the playoffs with a 51-7 win over Marion with quarter6 A back L.D. Richmon throwing for three scores and rushing for three more in the semifinals. Lake Hamilton stopped a two-point try to preserve a 21-20 win in overtime in a game that featured 99 rushing attempts combined by the two run-

oriented teams and one pass completion in the other semifinal. Greenwood coasted past Mountain Home in the second round, 49-13, with Hunter Houston throwing for four touchdowns and Hunter Wilkinson rushing for 138 yards and three scores. Lake Hamilton won easily, 50-14, over El Dorado in the second round. Greenwood pasted West Memphis, 55-7, in the first round with Colin Daggett and Tatum Sadler each returning interceptions for touchdowns.

Pulaski Academy and Little Rock Christian made it three championship games in a row with impressive semifinal wins.

5 A Pulaski Academy won, 52-14, over Wynne while Little Rock Christian went to Harrison and won, 52-28. They both had easily win in the third round with Pulaski Academy beating Magnolia, 53-29, and Little Rock Christian winning at Hot Springs Lakeside, 52-14. Pulaski Academy beat Farmington, 51-21, in the second round with Little Rock Christian winning, 48-19, against Clarksville. In the second-highest scoring playoff game in history, Magnolia scored the final three touchdowns in a 76 -55 win over Greenbrier in the second round with the two teams combining for 1,157 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Shiloh Christian and Rivercrest put up big offensive numbers in the semifinals with Shiloh Christian beating Stuttgart, 4 A 56-7, and Rivercrest rolling past Warren, 55-35. Shiloh Christian blocked punts on Stuttgart’s first two possessions with Noah DeJamatt returning the second one for a touchdown. In Hamburg’s 76-47 second-round win over Jonesboro

Westside, running back Armodd Taylor ran 23 times for 237 yards and touchdowns of 15, 15, 1, 40, 2, 8 and 26 yards while Brett Rice threw for 212 yards and four scores.

Harding Academy had little trouble in its semifinal 35-7 win over Glen Rose. McGehee advanced to the championship 3 A game with a 20-18 win over Hoxie, which played without quarterback Daylon Powell for the entire game and ShunDerrick Powell for three quarters after the two were ejected in a 65-35 win over Paris the week before with Daylon Powell rushing

for 290 yards and four scores and ShunDerrick Powell adding 256 yards and three touchdowns. McGehee also needed some heroics in a 44-39 win over Prescott in the third round, scoring two touchdowns in the final 55 seconds as Marcus Rose caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Owens with two seconds left after McGehee recovered an onside kick after Owens’ threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Andreas Jordan. Jessieville outlasted Harrisburg, 60-53, in the second round with Jessieville’s Carson Hair throwing for 169 yards and three touchdown passes to Charlie Davis of 35, 60 and 9 yards while rushing for 180 yards and touchdowns of 51, 10, 4 and 5 yards along with three two-point conversion runs and two successful two-point conversion passes, accounting for 52 points in all.

Fordyce and Des Arc won close games in the semifinals to advance to the championship game. Fordyce beat Gurdon, 2 A 27-24, on Jaheim Brown’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Mantrell Neal with 8:16 left in the game to complete a fourthand-9 try. Des Arc halted a run on a two-point conversion try with 1:15 left to beat Junction City, 22-20. In a first round game,

Carlisle outscored Mineral Springs, 72-50, with the Bison rushing for 544 yards led by Jason Sullivan with 19 carries for 202 yards and five touchdowns, Collin Jinks with 11 carries for 124 yards and three scores, and Devin Cooney with 109 yards on four carries for a touchdown, and Gage Parker with 94 carries and a tally.

Benton quarterback Garrett Brown threw for 453 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 60-53 win over Van Buren.

Brown completed 30-of-46 passes with touchdowns of 11 yards to Andre Lane, 44 yards to Cameron Harris, 28 yards to Trevor Standridge and finally 47 yards to running back Casey Johnson with 31 seconds left on fourth down that cracked a 53-53 tie.

Brown also had a 2-yard touchdown run. Brown is Benton's all-time leading passer.

Bladen Fike of Fayetteville led the Bulldogs to a fourth-quarter rally and a 46-42 win over Fort Smith Southside.

Fike completed 26-of-45 passes for 363 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for the decisive score with a 6-yard scamper with 36 seconds left.

Fayetteville trailed 42-26 with under six minutes left before Fike threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Link Lindsey with 5:41 left and an 11-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Sategna with 1:53 left. After Fayetteville recovered an on-side kick, Fike completed the comeback with his 6-yard run.

Rivercrest quarterback Kam Turner turned in a rarity in a 41-24 win over Valley View with over 200 yards both passing and rushing.

Turner completed 6-of-9 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns, including 78 and 19 yards to Keshawn Scott, and ran 11 times for 211 yards and scoring runs of 55 and 83 yards. He also returned a fumble 60 yards for a touchdown.

Harrison quarterback Cole Keylon accounted for seven touchdowns to lead Harrison to a 48-34 win over rival Mountain Home.

Keylon completed 8-of-14 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns with two going to Noah Moix and one each to Cylan Madden and Dylan Block. Keylon also ran for 123 yards and two scores on 17 carries.
