Fa y Wa M At Last! After decades of compiling facts, figures, and records about high school athletics, my file research has been cut in half thanks to the brilliance of prep historian Leland Barclay. Barclay has just published a high school sport buff’s dream; the Almanac of Arkansas High School Football. For decades, this kind of information has been available for professional and college football teams, but there was no compiled reference source for high school sports. This book is unique. The book not only recaps the current season, but as a special bonus will allow its readers the opportunity to recap the high school seasons dating back to 1955. That includes conference standings, All-Star selections and state playoff results. Remember the Little Rock Central-Little Rock Hall Thanksgiving Day classics? You can take a stroll back into the past with the Tigers and the Warriors. Barton won four straight Class A state championships, and played in four consecutive title games. What was the consecutive win streak the Bears set? Barclay’s book has the answer. Barclay’s depth of knowledge and attention to detail makes this a must-read. This book should be of special interest to high school football enthusiasts, who never forget that one big moment in life. Here’s proof!.
Wadie Moore, Jr., Administrative Assistant, Arkansas Activities Association, Retired
N f E The state of Arkansas is one of only a few states without a professional sports team to capture the fancy of sports fanatics, which probably explains the love affair that the state has with high school football. The beauty of high school football is the fervor and passion that the players display every autumn Friday night across the state. High school football is the last step where the players simply play the game for fun. It is to the players that this book is dedicated. Naturally, thanks are in order to the fine newspapers across the state that cover their area teams with relentless pursuit. Newspapers that were helpful in the research for this book include the Southwest Times Record of Fort Smith, Northwest Arkansas Times of Fayetteville, Log Cabin Democrat of Conway, Courier-Democrat of Russellville, Morning News of Springdale, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette of Little Rock, Jonesboro Sun, Pine Bluff Commercial, Texarkana Gazette and Malvern Daily Record. The Associated Press and the Arkansas Activities Association have also contributed mightily to high school athletics in this state for decades and were also very helpful and cooperative. Thanks are also due Wadie Moore for writing the forward. Wadie, as everyone knows, is the premier authority on Arkansas high school sports. He began covering high school sports in the mid-1960s, and it was his coverage that elevated it to the level that it enjoys today. Special thanks are in order to good friends and high school sports enthusiasts Walter Woodie, Rich Sanders, Mickey Doyle and Robert Yates. Together, they have covered high school sports for close to 100 combined years and provide much of the information found within this publication. Special thanks are due John Cooper, a Fort Smith Northside graduate and former sports editor. John provided the impetus to turn my many notes about Arkansas high school football into book form. As with any undertaking of this magnitude, mistakes will occur. They cannot, however, be corrected without knowledge of their existence. Any correction in misspelled names, facts, places, scores, dates, etc. should be sent to my attention with some sort of proof of documentation at PO Box 6003, Fort Smith, Arkansas 72906 or e-mailed to barclayalmanac@hotmail.com.

BRYANT 27, NORTH LITTLE ROCK 7 Attendance 20,631 • Sunny 62 degrees • Kickoff 6:35 pm • Time 2:43 DECEMBER 1, LITTLE ROCK — To win the rematch and their first state championship, the Bryant Hornets knew the task at hand against North Little Rock’s juggernaut Wildcats. “You’ve got to play John Wayne football against those guys,” Bryant head coach Buck James said. “You’ve got to be tough. They’re going to bring it to you every single play. We challenged their manhood. They’re going to try to run over you. If they’re better than us and run over us, we’re going to shake their hand and go home. We’ve had to play tough, and that’s what they did.” After jumping to a three-touchdown lead in the first meeting in late October and getting manhandled the last three quarters in a loss to North Little Rock, Bryant turned the table in a 27-7 win for the Class 7A state championship. The win marked Bryant’s first state championship in football. The game was also the first in the state’s largest classification comprised of two central Arkansas teams since 1998 when Little Rock Fair beat Cabot, 41-0 and the first without a 7A-West team since 2004 when Little Rock Central beat West Memphis, 41-7. North Little Rock ended a 12-year championship run by the 7A-West in 2017 with a 44-37 win over Bentonville and was trying to become the first team in the state’s largest classification to post consecutive perfect records since Little Rock High and Central in 1956-57. Behind a stout rushing attack, North Little Rock looked to be in position to do so especially after beating Bryant, 3428, on the last Friday of October.

GREENWOOD 45, BENTON 14 Attendance 11,201 • Sunny 68 degrees • noon • Time 2:50 DECEMBER 1, LITTLE ROCK — The Greenwood Bulldogs are all alone. The Bulldogs set a state record in winning their ninth state championship during the modern playoff era with a 4514 win over Benton for the Class 6A title. Greenwood won its second-straight state championship and ninth overall, breaking a tie with small-school power Barton during the modern playoff era, which began in 1968. The Bulldogs were playing in their 13th state championship game, all since their first in 1996. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 12-game winning streak, which included a 62-33 romp past Benton in the key 6A-West game in the regular season six weeks before the championship game. Despite that lop-sided win, Greenwood head coach Rick Jones completely changed the game plan heading into the championship game. “I told our coaches, and this is probably not very smart, that I want to totally change everything we did the first game,” Jones said. “The mentality is you don’t change. Why would you, you won. They change and we don’t change, and you end up getting stuck. Our offense and defense and kicking game guys, all three coordinators, put a game plan together that was based on looking at those guys like we had never seen them before. I think it paid dividends.” Of the six championship games held, four were rematches, and Greenwood

Third down conversions out of 22 attempts by the Bulldogs was the only team that was able to duplicate success over the team again. In fact, the Bulldogs followed almost the same path. Benton led briefly in the first game, which was at Greenwood, before the Bulldogs romped. In the championship game, Benton powered its way to a 7-0 lead. Greenwood followed with a 45-yard field goal by Grant Ennis on the Bulldog’s opening possession. Greenwood added touchdowns on its next three drives and took a commanding 24-7 lead at the half. “We knew we were going to have to play an error-free ball game, and we didn’t do that,” Benton head coach Brad Harris said. “We came out with a lot of intensity early, and it showed but we weren’t able to maintain that through the game. We made some mistakes. I’m real proud of the defense that first series to be able to hold them to a field goal. We just couldn’t get them off on third down.” Greenwood was efficient on third

He also rushed for 96 yards and three touchdowns. “We just executed,” Holt said. “We did the small things right and focused on what we needed to do to get the ball down the field, and stopped focusing on the big plays. We put a lot of small plays together and it worked out.” On third down alone, Holt was 8-of12 passing for 177 yards for eight first downs and two touchdowns, and six attempts rushing for 40 yards for six first downs and two touchdowns. “We told him we were going to ride him like a rented mule today,” Jones said. “There’s no tomorrow. We tried not to run him into the ground before we got to this day. Once we got to this day, the gloves were off.” Holt also caught a pass for 26 yards and returned three punts for 15 yards.

LITTLE ROCK CHRISTIAN 52, PULASKI ACADEMY 38 Attendance 10,762 • Sunny 61 degrees • Kickoff 2 p.m. • Time 3:15 DECEMBER 2, LITTLE ROCK — The first Sunday state football championship game was won appropriately by Little Rock Christian. The Warriors scored on five straight possessions in the second half to end Pulaski Academy’s stranglehold on Class 5A with a 52-38 win. Pulaski Academy had won four straight state championships, tying Barton for the longest streak in the modern playoff era, and had not lost to an Arkansas opponent in 57 games, dating back to a loss to Morrilton in the second round of the playoffs in 2013. “There’s a reason why five in a row has never been done before and only one team has ever done four in the playoff era,” Pulaski Academy head coach Kevin Kelley said. “It’s hard. Everyone is gunning for you. You get their best every week. You’re fighting complacency on your own team. That many times, that many shots in a row, eventually somebody’s going to be good enough if you’re not at your best to beat you.” The game was moved from Friday night with strong thunderstorms predicted and the assurance of lightning. The Arkansas Activities Association sent out notification of the move, which also effected semifinals in Class 2A, 3A and 4A, about 9 a.m. on Friday. Sunday’s game was played under sunny skies and temperatures in the low -60s, which was perfect for the highpowered offenses of the two neighboring private-school rivals. The game was also the second of the season between the two teams, which

Arkadelphia, which started the season with five straight losses, won its 10th straight and completed its comeback season with a 28-0 blanking of conference foe Pulaski Robinson to repeat as Class 4A state champions. Arkadelphia lost all three nonconference games and started 4Axxxxx play with consecutive losses to Nashville and Robinson, by a 42-14 deficit, before rallying. The Badgers won their final five games in the regular season, including three road games. They then won five games in the playoffs, including road trips to Warren, Stuttgart and Shiloh Christian, all three of which were top seeds. In all, in their 10-game winning streak to end the season, Arkadelphia’s defense yielded just nine touchdowns and recorded five shutouts. Including in the shutouts was the championship game. Arkadelphia held Robinson to just 64 yards and three first downs in the first half on 20 plays. Robinson fumbled on its first play of the game, and linebacker Cole Turner recovered at Robinson’s 37. Arkadelphia needed just seven plays to make Robinson pay with Zion Hatley rushing for three yards for the score with 7:06 left in the opening quarter. BOONEVILLE 35, OSCEOLA 0 Attendance 2,813 • Rain 36 degrees • Kickoff noon • Time 2:31 DECEMBER 8, LITTLE ROCK — The Booneville Bearcats were the only team in the state to go from start to finish as No. 1 in their classification. Booneville wrapped up a dominating undefeated season with a 35-0 win over Osceola to win the Class 3A championship, applying the Arkansas Activities Association’s Sportsmanship Rule in the process. Booneville was perfect in 15 starts in completing its third perfect season in school history, but first in the modern playoff era. The Bearcats were also undefeated in 2013, 1953 and 1938. In the statewide Arkansas Sports Media poll, Booneville was selected No. 1 in Class 3A in August but five other teams also earned No. 1 votes, which was the most of any classification so it was considered the most wide open of all classifications. “Since these kids were little, people said these kids were going to win a state championship,” Booneville head coach Scott Hyatt said. “It kept growing. JUNCTION CITY 33, HAZEN 22 Attendance 3,118 • Rain/sleet 35 degrees • Kickoff 7 p.m. • Time 2:16 DECEMBER 7, LITTLE ROCK — The Junction City Dragons had to live with a loss in the state championship game in 2017 for a year. Then they trailed undefeated Hazen by 10 points in the second half of the 2018 Class 2A state championship game. Junction City, though, scored 24 unanswered points to top the Hornets, 36-22, to rally to their xxxxxx state championship. The championship was the first for former Dragon, Steven Jones, who played under David Carpenter. “It’s a little bit of money off our back,” Jones said. “With Coach Carpenter winning six state titles, that is a tad bit of pressure to win it. To come out on top definitely a monkey on our back. I’m just proud to bring home a trophy to our community, a football town and they eat it up. If you don’t win it all, they’re mad at you for a year so everybody’s happy right now.” On top of that Jones was awaiting the arrival of twins. “There’s a lot of good stuff going on at the Jones house,” Jones said. “The good Lord has blessed us.” Jones took over for Carpenter after the xxxx season and immediately guided the Dragons to the Class 3A state championship game, where they committed five turnovers and lost to Rivercrest, 48-14. Back in Class 2A, they weren’t denied. “It made our guys hungry,” Jones said. “Since we got off the bus from last year off that title run, we went back to work. Here we are on top.”

On the Cover: Hill, Holt, Henry, Wood, Burks Quarterbacks Jacob Wood of Conway Christian, Peyton Holt of Greenwood and Justice Hill of Greenwood joined an exclusive group in 2018 when they ran and passed for at least 20 touchdowns. The 20/20 season had been accomplished just 14 times before Wood, Holt and Hill did it in 2018. Holt and Hill, oddly, just played quarterback their senior seasons having converted from receivers. They also led their teams to state championships; Holt in Class 6A and Hill in Class 5A. Pulaski Academy’s Hudson Henry wrapped up a phenomenal career as a receiver. Warren’s Treylon Burks also concluded a star-studded career, accounting for 85 touchdowns over four years despite missing the last half of his senior season due to an injury. The multi-dimensional Burks had 44 career touchdown receptions and ran for 27, scoring 71 offensive touchdowns. He also returned three punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns for five touchdowns on special teams. He returned three interceptions for scores on defense and in addition threw three touchdown passes.
