In your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Protect your belongings

· · ·

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. 1. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M with their aspirational knock-offs.

2. BORN This trendy cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the best shops are in Carrer Rec, Carrer dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

3. RAVAL If you are bringing goods out of the EU, ask for a Tax Free Cheque in the shop.

ESCALIVADA

CALÇOTS

Freshly made escalivada is a local specialty which melts in the mouth. It is usually served as a tapa, or to accompany grilled meat dishes. It is made from smoke-grilled peppers, eggplant and onions which are mixed with olive oil and garlic and left to marinate and soak up the flavours. It is sometimes topped with anchovies and accompanied by crispy pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with fresh tomato and a drizzle of good quality olive oil. Delicious!

If you’re visiting Barcelona this spring we recommend you try a unique and popular seasonal specialty: calçots. These long spring onions have a mild leek-like flavour, and are served with a delicious romesco sauce, packed with the fresh flavours of tomatoes, peppers, garlic, almonds, bread, and extra virgin olive oil. The pile of steaming, chargrilled calçots is usually brought to the table wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm.

GAUDÍ OFF THE BEATEN TRACK Barcelona would not be the city it is today without the outstanding contributions of Antoni Gaudí and his groundbreaking architectural designs. Aside from his most famous works, such as the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló, Gaudí´s designs can also be found in unexpected corners of Barcelona. Discover these hidden gems off the beaten track and you will continue to be amazed.

CASA VICENS Casa Vicens was originally built for Manuel Vicens, the owner of a ceramic company, and later placed on the market as a family residence. However, the house is no longer a private residence but now open to the public. As one of Gaudí´s first significant pieces of work, it gives important insights into both his artistic journey and historical context. Carrer de les Carolines, 18-24 18

TORRE BELLESGUARD The intricate symbolism characterizing Gaudí’s work can be uncovered at each turn. Guided tours reveal its architectural secrets, legends and anecdotes. You can visit the emblematic Bellesguard Tower, and stand the secluded grounds of its terrain which has been inhabited for more than 2000 years. Carrer de Bellesguard, 16

LAMP POSTS IN PLAÇA REIAL If you have passed through Plaça Reial while wandering through the Gothic Quarter, you may have noticed that two lamp posts stand out quite significantly. These were designed by Gaudí in 1879, very early on in his career. Although they were built years before his more famous pieces, his creative vision is apparent through the original design of these lamp posts. Plaça Reial, Gothic Quarter

BARCELONA'S CATS Barcelona seems to be a very dog-friendly city, judging by the amount of people walking their dogs on every street and playing in the squares and parks. However, if you find yourself yearning for some feline vibes, check out some of these spots around Barcelona.

ADMIRE THE RAVAL CAT

ESPAI DE GATS

Walking through the Raval neighbourhood without stumbling upon this gigantic bronze cat statue would prove quite difficult. Designed by the Colombian artist Fernando Botero, this public art sculpture serves as a common meeting place for friends and essential selfie partner. If you are walking home late at night you might even hear him purring...

This is the first cat café in Barcelona where you can have a cup of coffee whilst surrounded by the cats that live here. It also functions as an education centre with information about taking care of cats. All are looking to be adopted into a loving forever-home.

Rambla de Raval

ELS QUATRE GATS

Park Güell is not only home to some of Gaudí’s most alluring architecture and spectacular views of the city, but also to several stray cats and a few lucky ones who live nearby and enjoy going for a wander. After a hike up to the top of the park, look out and see if you can spot the cats strolling around or basking in the sun.

This restaurant takers its name from a Catalan phrase meaning “only a few people.” Inspired by a Parisian tavern, Els Quatre Gats opened its doors in 1897 and has since operated as a cabaret, hostel, pub, and restaurant. Picasso often frequented this venue at the start of his career as an artist and even held his first exhibition here. Exquisite food accompanies an eclectic yet classic atmosphere.

CADAQUÉS Tiny, hidden bays outline this famous seaside town on the Costa Brava. Its incredible landscape of rocky coast fringed by beautiful beaches and coves makes it a very popular destination. This is an ideal season to visit, before the crowds arrive in the busy summer months.

DISCOVER CADAQUÉS

SALVADOR DALÍ'S HOUSE

Cadaqués was a favourite resort of both Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, who were attracted to the incredible scenery of this sleepy town. Spend just a few minutes in this former fishing village and it is not hard to see why it is loved by so many and appreciated by artists of such prestige. The crystal clear waters dance with an incredible light and a sea breeze accompanies the spring sunshine. It remains a favourite spot for artists and weekenders from Barcelona and nearby towns.

Salvador Dalí was one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century. He was known and loved for his flamboyant personality as well as for his iconic paintings. The house he lived in, just around the bay at Port Lligat on the Cap de Creus, has been preserved as a museum. Dalí is said to have been drawn by the location's landscape, light and remoteness. He reconstructed its inner spaces during the 40 years he lived there, creating a quirky and unique ambience.

Although its small population makes for a quiet town during most of the year, this number grows dramatically during the summer months. Despite its popularity among tourists, the town has managed to retain its charm and authenticity. There are plenty of restaurants and bars where you can taste the local specialties and enjoy beautiful sea views. Keep an eye out for the artisan craft shops for original and stylish souvenirs. 26

CAP DE CREUS The Cap de Creus is a nature reserve, marked by the eastern end of the Pyrenees. There are a number of hiking trails both north and south of the peninsula with incredible views across the bay to France. These views of the coast with its tumbling cliffs are sure to leave a lasting memory in your mind.

ACTIVITIES Several companies rent out boats in Cadaqués for a unique way to explore the bay and beyond. Dusk is especially beautiful here, and we suggest making time to watch the sunset over the bay. The short walks and longer hikes are a real treat. There are many paths that wind along the coast and hilltops, lined with plenty of bars where you can enjoy the views and take a break with a refreshing drink and some tapas.

BrewDog Barcelona

GLUTEN-FREE BEER ROUTE So, you’re booked into Barcelona for the weekend and it’s a Friday night… but you are allergic to gluten and the options look limited. That might be true in some parts of the city, but gluten-free options are now becoming increasingly available. Here is a quick guide to finding una cerveza sin gluten.

El Maravillas After a quick stop off at Barca’s football ground, head towards one of Barcelona’s most charming, hidden squares. This is a great place to start, or indeed finish the evening. El Maravillas is a charming bar. We sat on the tantalising terrace situated on the vibrant square and tried the locally brewed Daura beer by Damm. This bar has featured in all the top guides throughout the years and, to be honest, it was very hard to leave! Plaça de la Concòrdia, 15 elmaravillas.cat Gluten-free dining tip: If you are stuck for food, try Flax & Kale (Tallers, 74) or M2 Gluten-Free (Diagonal, 505) for an extensive selection of meat and vegan dishes.

BrewDog Barcelona Billing itself as a no-nonsense chain bar, Scotland’s Brew Dog craft beer brewery is extending its global reach by opening its own bars in major European cities. This beautiful Barcelona venue showcases the company’s selection of excellent beers, real ales and gluten-free tipples like Vagabond Pale Ale and the Catalán beer Zatec brewed by Lo Vilot. Cheers! Bodega Fermín La Barceloneta This is the craft beer central in the popular seaside barrio, and offers some great flavours from the local Wylie Brewery, as well as one or two gluten-free options on rotation. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.
