1 A hidden square packed with charm Plaça de la Mercè is a great suntrap, just off the bottom of the Ramblas so it's easy to find. It's dominated by the Basilica de la Mercè, an astounding structure with a giant sculpture of the Virgin Mary peering down into the square. There are several cafés with quaint little terraces where you can enjoy the sunshine, not to mention countless other bars all along Carrer Ample and the surrounding area.

Grab a delicious bite to eat The Gothic district has a multitude of restaurants and cafés that offer cheap, tasty, homemade food from all over the world. One of our favourites is Lechuga Pizza on Carrer Escudellers 33, open until 3am most nights, with gorgeous freshly-made pizza, generous portions, low prices and friendly staff. We also recommend La Cuina de la Mama on Carrer d'en Gignas 13. Their home-made empanadas (savoury pastries), fresh pasta, and quiches are beyond delicious.

Urban art evolution

There’s all sorts of urban graffiti in the Gothic, from vandals to visionaries. Check out the square behind Carrer d’en Carabassa, where Afrodita restaurant's tables back onto some nice murals. Going down Carrer Avinyo you'll spot a few more... and look out for the Pez fish in the nearby streets.

4 Live music in the pipe smokers' club The Gothic district is infamous for its huge selection and variety of bars, but if you want somewhere a bit different check out the Pipa Club. This pipe-smokers' club is in a beautiful old building at Plaça Reial 3, on the 1st floor.

Ring the doorbell to be let in. They have regular flamenco, tango, and jam sessions, so it’s great for a late night out with live music!

Gaudí was a master of esoteric symbolism and sacred geometry, which he subtly incorporated into all his most famous works. A particularly intriguing example is the Magic Square on the Sagrada Familia. Make sure you book the session in advance because the activity is notoriously popular, especially around Easter, and loads of fun for the whole family. 5. Parc de la Barceloneta This divides Barceloneta and Vila Olímpica, and is near the seafront. Ideal for those moments when you’d rather lie on the grass instead of the sand.

This fishing village north of Girona attracts many visitors with its unique charm and history. Countless sweeping hairpin bends turn away from the main road that leads to France and down towards its picturesque bay. April is a perfect month for discovering Cadaqués, and enjoying its spring sunshine and tranquil ambience.

what to visit?

The Casa Museo Dalí in Portlligat, on the outskirts of Cadaqués, is definitely worth seeing. This is where the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí lived for nearly 40 years with his wife and muse Gala, gradually building and extending it, adding furniture and objects. He described his home as “… a real biological structure. With each new impulse of our life there corresponded a new cell, a room.”

Art galleries. Cadaqués was a popular sum-

mer residence for several artists, with many more visiting regularly. These include Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miró, and Richard Hamilton. Even today there is still an important community of artists, and there are 14 galleries open to the public.

The old town.

Its Medieval history can be felt in the labyrinthine streets, which are now lined with charming whitewashed small houses and artisan shops. The church of Santa María de Cadaqués was built in the Gothic style during the 16th century. A beautiful Baroque altar decoration and other details were later added.

Rocky coves. Take a walk on the wild side and discover the countless little beaches that line this stretch of the Costa Brava on either side of the Bay of Cadaqués. The water will be decidedly nippy and only bravest will go for a splash, but the breathtaking scenery can be enjoyed by all. Bring a picnic and escape from the crowds for a relaxing afternoon.

Cadaqués gets surprisingly lively at night for a town this size! Several bars are located on Miquel Rosset Street, parallel to the seafront.

The cosy Café de la Habana was one of Dalí’s favourite haunts. It often hosts live Cuban music and other performances. There are also plenty of great seafront bars where you can watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand.

Seafood fans are in for a treat, as there are plenty of tasty dishes to choose from. Traditional favourites include seafood paella, grilled sardines, anchovies, gilt-head bream and lobster. Most restaurants offer a very reasonable menu with local wine and dessert included.

very vintage Riera Baixa in the Raval is a treasure trove of second hand stores selling vintage clothing and accessories, as well as record shops, tattoo parlours, and cool bars and cafés. Many of the shops spill out onto the street on Saturdays creating a market vibe. Look out for the Brick Lane vintage market on the 5th April at Pipoca, Calle Portaferrisa 8, with vintage vendors and drinks sponsors Beefeater.

getting to the airport for less Instead of taking the privately run Aerobus from Plaça Catalunya, which costs 5,90€ one way, there are 2 hourly trains from Sants. These are included in Barcelona’s public transport network so you can use your T10 travelcard or get a single ticket for 2€. The 46 bus from Plaça Espanya also goes to the airport, eventually! Not recommended for those in a hurry, but a nice way to get a final tour around town before your flight.

Sant Jordi

Saint George’s Day is celebrated all around the world; however, nowhere enjoys this occasion quite like Barcelona.

“La Diada de Sant Jordi” on the 23rd April has been likened to Valentine's Day. It is Catalunya’s patron saint’s day, and roses and books are exchanged between lovers, partners, friends, family and colleagues.

Roses have been associated with Sant Jordi since Medieval times; according to the legend, when Sant Jordi slayed the dragon a red rose bush grew from the drops of his blood. The 23rd April is also World Book Day. This date was chosen to commemorate the deaths of the literary greats Miguel de Cervantes who passed away on the 22nd April and William Shakespeare on 23rd April, both in 1616.

On this day impromptu book stalls and rose sellers line every street corner and square, and by the end of the day around 800,000 books and approximately 4 million roses have been sold! The roses come in every color, red being the most traditional, however you also see yellow, pink, white and even beautiful blue ones. They are paired with a

wheat stalk, to symbolize fertility, and bound by a ribbon of the Catalan flag.

Plaça Sant Jaume, which is located between the Gothic and Born districts, is definitely worth visiting on this day. As well as buying your roses you can also watch some traditional dancing; the Sardana, Catalunya’s national dance is performed throughout the day. The Palau de la Generalitat, Barcelona’s main government building, is open to the public on this day only. Street performers can also be spotted bouncing, juggling, spinning and twirling, animating the squares and street corners all over the city.

If you would like to buy some books, but don’t fancy tackling any Spanish or Catalan literature don’t panic, there are some great English bookshops around the city. Come In Bookshop, on Carrer Balmes 126, has a fantastic collection of new releases and classics. There’s also Hibernian Bookshop on Carrer Montseny 17 in Gràcia, the only second hand English bookshop in the city.

Make sure you pass Plaça Catalunya and the Ramblas to soak up the vibrant, joyful atmosphere that is created by this special day.

12 -19 semana santa - easter Easter is an important celebration in Spain, and its Catholic roots are remembered during this holy week that starts on Palm Sunday and leads up to Easter Sunday on the 20th.

Whilst many events take place inside the churches, some spill out onto the streets filling Barcelona with a festive spirit. Processions are organized by religious brotherhoods associated with a church. Whilst in Seville there are lavish processions with 57 brotherhoods, in Barcelona there are just 2. These are the "Nuestra Señora de las Angustias" from the church of Sant Jaume in C/ Ferran, and the "Hermandad de la Macarena y la de Jesús del Gran Poder" from Sant Agustí church in Pl. de Sant Agustí 2, in the Raval.

Bakeries abound with tasty sweets and coca pastries.

Instead of simply treating the little ones with chocolate eggs, the tradition in Catalunya is for children to receive a mona from their godparents. These elaborate chocolate creations range from a typical chick-ina-basket to popular cartoons and icons.

This fair was created by Andalucían immigrants over 40 years ago and is now organised by the second generation immigrants. It has evolved since its early days, swapping bull fights with rides and a giant ferris wheel. The marquees or casetas fill with singing and flamenco dancing, and there is a continual feast of gastronomic specialities. Expect traditional Andaluían treats and fine Jerez sherry. By the time night falls there is a full on party atmosphere, with plenty of live music and the fairground in full swing.

Plaça Reial

First impressions: The heart of Barcelona's historic centre is a labyrinth of small streets. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. Imposing churches back onto the historic Jewish quarter and lively cafés and tapas bars fill the many squares, from the busy Plaça Reial just off the Ramblas to the more secluded Plaça Sant Felip Neri.

First Impressions: The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

Insider tips: There are plenty of quality restaurants offering great value “menu del dia” lunch menus, many of which are not located too far Mfrom the important monuments such as Gaudí´s Pedrera and Casa Batlló. If you fancy some shopping, look out for the smart boutiques concentrated in the top part of the Eixample, near C/ Diagonal.

The Golden Fish

First Impressions: This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. Frank Gehry's famous “fish” sculpture gives an eclectic touch to the modern leisure complex it stands above. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces, and a busy nightlife scene.

Insider Tips: Get up early (or stay out late) and watch the sunrise from the beach. The Icaria cinema on Av. Icaria shows films in Version Original, so you could catch a film in English or Spanish before enjoying an evening meal on the seafront.
