God’s Super Big Universe The heavens were made by the Word of the Lord. All the stars were made by the breath of His mouth. Psalm 33:6

The moon is so big and bright! Have you ever thought if you stood on a tall hill and reached out on tiptoe, just maybe, you could touch it? You might need a little more help to get there. If you could hop a jet and fly to the moon, it would take you 18 days. Don’t forget to pack snacks! The moon is Earth’s closest neighbor in space. If you wanted to fly to the sun, it would take 19 years! But the universe is even bigger than that. It’s so big we can’t even measure it.

8

It might make you feel tiny to think that our planet Earth is just a speck in space, but remember that our amazing God created everything. In God’s eyes you’re not small at all. Out of His whole wide universe, He made us His most special creations. He knows your name and loves you more than anything!

God, Your universe is too big to measure, like You! Thank You for loving me most of all.

Moon Glow The Son shines with the shining-greatness of the Father. . . . The Son gave His own life so we could be clean from all sin. Hebrews 1:3

The moon isn’t made of cheese or marshmallows. It’s actually a big ball of rock that travels around (or orbits) the Earth. The surface of the moon is dark and full of craters where asteroids and meteoroids—space rocks—have smashed into it. You might wonder if the moon is dark, how does it seem so bright in the night sky? The moon doesn’t glow with its own light. The full moon shines like a happy night-light in the dark because it reflects the sun’s light!

10

God wants you to be like Jesus, shining His goodness back to others. Jesus died on the cross so we could be clean from all the wrong things we do. When you choose to do what God says is right—being kind, good, loving, and helpful—you’ll glow with God’s light for everyone to see, just like the moon shines with the sun’s light.

God, I thank You for the moon that glows in the dark. Help me to be a light for You!

Twinkle, Twinkle He knows the number of the stars. He gives names to all of them. Psalm 147:4

Billions of stars fill our galaxy, but you can see only a few thousand with your eyes at night. When you’re out in the country, away from city lights, you can see more of the stars shining in the dark. Stars are balls of burning gases. They’re different colors because some of them are hotter than others. Some are red, some are blue, some are yellow—and God knows them all. What a wonderful thing to know that the same good God who created and named each and every star also created you. And He knows your name and loves you very much. You never

12

have to feel alone or think that no one knows you. God does! He knows all about you—how many hairs are on your head, your favorite food, and all the things you love to do. He knows you so well because He created you with love.

God, I thank You for the twinkling stars and for knowing and loving me. Help me to remember that You always see me.

Sunshine All the Time For the Lord God is a sun and a safe-covering. Psalm 84:11

Fire in the sky! The sun is a giant ball of scorching hot, burning gases in space—and it never burns out. The sun is actually a star. It’s the closest star to Earth—only 93 million miles away. That’s why it looks so much bigger than all the stars you see at night. If the sun were any closer, we’d all get way too hot. But if the sun were farther away, we’d freeze. God created the sun to keep our planet at just the right temperature. Its light races to Earth in about eight minutes to keep us warm and help our plants to grow.

14

The sun shows us God’s power and love. On cloudy days, and even at night when you can’t see it, the sun is still there. The Bible tells us that “God is light” (1 John 1:5). And you know what? He is always there too, just like the sun. In fact, He never leaves you!

God, I thank You for creating the sun to light up the world. And I thank You for staying with me all the time.

15

Star Stories “Now look up into the heavens and add up the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then He said to him, “Your children and your children’s children will be as many as the stars.” Genesis 15:5

Did you know that the stars tell stories? Way before video games were invented, people loved to play connect-the-dots with the twinkling nighttime stars. They even named their pictures and made up stories about them. These star pictures are called constellations. Orion the Hunter battled a scorpion. The stars of Leo draw a roaring lion. The stories about the constellations are

16

make-believe. But the Bible tells us a true story about someone who looked up at the stars and got a huge promise from God. Abram wanted a son. And he waited and waited. . .and waited some more. One night, God told him to look up at the stars and try to count them. He promised that Abram’s family would outnumber the stars! God kept that promise to Abram. He always keeps His promises!

God, I’m so glad I can always trust You to keep Your promises.

Planets on Parade In the beginning God made from nothing the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

The planets are on parade! On a special night the planets line up in the night sky to show off their brightness. At the right time you can see up to five planets without even using a telescope. What’s a planet? Just look down! Earth is your planet. Space is huge with a lot of stuff floating around out there. So scientists put their heads together and came up with three rules for planets. (1) They have to travel around the sun. (2) They have to be round. (3) And they have to have an orbit (or path around the sun)

18

that’s clear of other small objects. Eight planets orbit our sun. The rocky planets are closest to the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The gas giants—Jupiter and Saturn—are really big and mostly made of hydrogen and helium. The ice giants—Uranus and Neptune—include gases and liquids. God is so incredible that He created the sun, moon, and all the planets out of nothing. Nothing! He just said the words, and everything jumped into being. That’s power!

God, thank You for creating such an out-of-this-world universe. You are so awesome!

19

7

God’s Stellar Solar System It is He Who made the earth by His power, and the world by His wisdom. By His understanding He has spread out the heavens. Jeremiah 10:12

Your mission, space explorer, is to chart your galactic neighborhood. Our solar system is made up of the sun and everything that orbits it. The sun is the biggest thing in our solar system. It’s a giant star that could hold over a million Earths inside. The sun sits right in the middle with eight planets orbiting around it— Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The solar system also has

20

moons, dwarf planets—like Pluto—and millions of asteroids and comets. God made our solar system with His out-of-this-world power and wisdom. God loves to put things in order, and He put Earth on just the right path around the sun to make it the perfect home for us. When you follow God’s path for your life, you can trust Him to guide you like He guides the whole universe. You’ll be just like those planets that follow God’s path around the sun.

God, thanks for putting our planets in order. Help me to stay on Your right path.

Glorious Galaxies Christ was before all things. All things are held together by Him. Colossians 1:17

What is made up of billions of stars, is sprinkled with planets, and takes 100,000 years for a ray of light to sprint from one side to the other? The Milky Way! The Milky Way galaxy is home to our solar system. It’s one of billions of galaxies in space. Galaxies are groups of stars and planets held together by gravity. If they get too close to each other, one galaxy can gobble up another! Some galaxies look like ovals, some are spiral shaped—like the Milky Way—and some look like fuzzy, glowing blobs.

22

Space is huge and mysterious, but God made it all. The Bible tells us that God has always existed, way before He created galaxies, our solar system, or Earth. And He holds all of creation together, from the itty-bitty—almost invisible—atoms that make up everything to the biggest swirling galaxy. And the best part is that He keeps it all working perfectly.

God, thank You for making the galaxies and holding everything together—including me!

9

Asteroid Avengers God is our safe place and our strength. He is always our help when we are in trouble. Psalm 46:1

Suit up to save the planet! The scientists in NASA’s Planetary Defense agency don’t wear capes, but they are like superhero scientists who find and track asteroids (space rocks) that get too close to Earth. They help keep us safe from asteroids that might crash into us. Most asteroids—big and small space rocks that orbit the sun—hang out in the asteroid belt that lives between Mars and Jupiter. Some have escaped the asteroid belt and crashed into Earth before, but most of them burn up in Earth’s atmosphere

24

(the gases that surround our planet), before they hit the ground. God created Earth to be our home, and He always watches out for us. He can even use people as cool as space scientists to work as asteroid avengers to help. Always remember that God controls the whole universe, including asteroids. He is our powerful protector who always helps us, no matter what comes our way!

God, I know You are in charge of everything. Thanks for being with me.
