INTRODUCTION Whatever the need of the moment, the answer is to be found in scripture, if we take the time to search for it. Whatever we’re feeling, whatever we’re suffering, whatever we’re hoping, the Bible has something to say to us.

This collection of Bible verses is meant for use as a handy reference when you need the Bible’s guidance on a particular problem in your life. It is in no way intended to replace regular Bible study or the use of a concordance for in-depth study of a subject. There are many facets of your life and many topics in the Bible that are not covered here.

But if, for example, you are feeling extremely lonely one day, some of the Bible’s wisdom and comfort is available to you here under the topic of Loneliness. All topics are arranged alphabetically, for ease of use.

ANGER The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy.

Psalm 145:8

“You are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness.”

Nehemiah 9:17

For His anger endures but a moment; in His favor is life.

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

Psalm 30:5

Therefore, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. For the wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God. James 1:19–20

Do not be in a hurry in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the hearts of fools.

Ecclesiastes 7:9

He who is quickly angered deals foolishly.

Proverbs 14:17

He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.

Proverbs 16:32

A soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.

Proverbs 15:1

A wrathful man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger appeases strife.

Proverbs 15:18

An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Do not fret in this way to do evil.

Psalm 37:8

Make no friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man you shall not go, lest you learn his ways and get a snare for your soul.

Proverbs 22:24–25

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

Colossians 3:21

Be angry and do not sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath.

The discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his glory to overlook a transgression.

Ephesians 4:31–32

“But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.”

Matthew 5:22

It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and angry woman.

Proverbs 21:19

Do not avenge yourselves, dearly beloved, but rather give place to wrath, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine. I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:19–21

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. For you shall heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord shall reward you.

Proverbs 25:21–22

But now also put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

CHARITY Blessed is he who considers the poor. The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, and he shall be blessed on the earth, and You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.

Psalm 41:1–2

He who has compassion on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him what he has given.

Proverbs 19:17

“But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you shall be blessed, for they cannot repay you. For you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

Luke 14:13–14

“Sell what you have, and give to charity. Provide yourselves bags that do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches, nor moth corrupts.”

Luke 12:33

“Give, and it shall be given to you. Good measure—pressed down, and shaken together, and running over—shall be given by men into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it shall be measured back to you.”

Luke 6:38

He who gives to the poor shall not lack, but he who hides his eyes shall have many curses.

Proverbs 28:27

He who despises his neighbor sins, but he who has mercy on the poor is happy.

He has dispersed; he has given to the poor. His righteousness endures forever; his horn shall be exalted with honor.

So let every man give as he purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.

There is one who scatters and yet increases, and there is one who withholds more than is right, but it tends to poverty.

The generous soul shall be made prosperous, and he who waters shall also be watered himself.

Proverbs 11:24–25

I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his descendants begging for bread.

Psalm 37:25

Charge those who are rich in this world not to be haughty or trust in uncertain riches but to trust in the living God, who richly gives us all things to enjoy, that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to share.

Ecclesiastes 11:1

“And if you draw out your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light shall rise in obscurity, and your darkness will be as the noonday.”

Isaiah 58:10

“Is this not the fast that I have chosen. . . ? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house, when you see the naked that you cover him, and that you do not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light shall break out as the morning, and your healing shall spring up speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you. The glory of the Lord shall be your reward.”

Isaiah 58:6–8

“And the Levite, because he has no part or inheritance with you, and the foreigner and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, shall come and shall eat and be satisfied, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand that you do.”

Deuteronomy 14:29

Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go your way, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven. And come, take up the cross and follow Me.” Mark 10:21

He is ever merciful and lends, and his descendants are blessed.

Psalm 37:26

“Be careful that you do not do your deeds of charity before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Therefore when you do your deeds of charity, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do deeds of charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does, that your deeds of charity may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret shall Himself reward you openly.”

Matthew 6:1–4

“Then the King shall say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous shall answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You? Or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in? Or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King shall answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, because you have done it to one of the least of these My brothers, you have done it to Me.’ ” Matthew 25:34–40

“For I will pour water on him who is thirsty and floods on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit on your descendants and My blessing on your offspring.”

But when Jesus saw it, He was very displeased and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to Me, and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of God. Truly I say to you, whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter in it.” And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them.

“And all your children shall be taught by the Lord, and the peace of your children shall be great.”

Yet He sets the poor on high from affliction and makes him families like a flock.

COMFORT God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is removed, and though the mountains are carried into the midst of the sea, though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling.

Psalm 46:1–3

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me.

You shall stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand shall save me.

Psalm 138:7

All the days of the afflicted are evil, but he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.

A sound heart is the life of the flesh, but envy the rottenness of the bones.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

CORRECTION, GOD’S For those whom the Lord loves, He corrects, like a father with the son in whom he delights.

Proverbs 3:12

“You shall also consider in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the Lord your God chastens you. Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.” Deuteronomy 8:5–6

Blessed is the man whom You chasten, O Lord, and teach out of Your law, that You may give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked.

Psalm 94:12–13

“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and He scourges every son whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons, for what son is he whom the father does not chasten?

Hebrews 12:6–7

For they truly for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure, but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyous for the present, but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are exercised by it.
