WELCOME TO SQUAMISH BC

Loosely translated, “Squamish” means “Mother of the Wind” or “people of the sacred water,” referring to the Coast Salish peoples who live in the region today and whose ancestors have inhabited it for millennia.

The area was first visited by Europeans when, in 1792, Captain George Vancouver and crew sailed up Howe Sound aboard the ship Discovery. Over the next century tens of thousands of traders and prospectors flocked to the port on their journey up to the Cariboo Gold Rush of 1858.

Squamish transitioned into a farming community in 1888 with the first non-native settlers. Forestry replaced the agrarian economy, and when a railway connecting Squamish to Vancouver was built in 1956 – followed by a road two years later – the community took steps towards welcoming the rest of the world. The Squamish Museum, the West Coast Railway Heritage Park and log books at the Adventure Centre detail much of this history. The Sea To Sky Gondola, just south of Squamish, offers an incredible alpine adventure.

Squamish celebrates being ‘Hard Wired For Adventure’! It is famous for its snow-capped peaks, lush rainforests, white-water rivers, ocean sound and the second largest granite monolith in the world—the Stawamus Chief. The incredible range of geological features—created from the interplay of volcanic activity and an ice age—attracts adventurers and sightseers year round.

Whether you’re seeking exciting activities, physical exertion, an adrenaline rush, or a simple connection with nature in a friendly, welcoming community, Squamish has it all. Enjoy your stay!

The Squamish Adventure Centre is your local headquarters for visitor information, bookings, brochures and expert advice on top experiences, attractions, accommodations, transportation, dining, events and everything else you need to get the most out of your visit.

Located along the Sea to Sky highway at 38551 Loggers Lane , this 5,773 square foot architectural landmark was made using locally-sourced and manufactured Douglas fir timber. Its signature curved-roof design represents the eagles that migrate annually to the Squamish Valley.

Wear The Squamish Brand. Also located within the Squamish Adventure Centre is The Squamish Store. Home to a thoughtfully curated selection of prints, stickers, postcards, pottery, jewelry, and one-of-a-kind items made by local artists as well as books, toys, and Squamish-branded apparel for all ages. The Squamish Store also carries a wide selection of Indigenous artwork and prints.

DOWNTOWN Squamish

Located at the north end of Howe Sound, the downtown quarter is the business hub of Squamish, and primed for an exciting expansion with new waterfront developments, including a downtown waterfront promenade. Once an agricultural area and trading post in the 1890’s, the downtown area began to grow with the completion of a railway connection to Pemberton in 1914, as well as the construction of a deep sea dock and marina.

Now an economic centre, downtown Squamish offers a wide variety of amenities to explore, including specialty shops, boutiques, restaurants, pharmacies, banks, City Hall, public library, grocery stores, a post office, art galleries, retail shops, cideries, breweries and the local yacht club. Every Saturday there is a vibrant Farmer's Market and throughout the week you'll find a variety of food trucks.

One of the first stops you should make when you arrive in town, is to visit the Squamish Adventure Centre, located just off Highway 99 at Cleveland Avenue. You can’t miss the sweeping mountaininspired architecture, huge glass windows and stone Inukshuk out front. Grab a coffee while the kids have fun in the play area, watch a movie in the 45 seat theatre, view the stunning 14 exquisitely carved log books, and learn about all of the activities and adventures you can do in Squamish at the Visitor Information Centre. There is a handy bike wash area to clean your bikes at the end of your day.

From downtown, it’s a short drive to access your next outdoor adventure in Squamish’s naturally beautiful surroundings at the Squamish Canyon, Sea to Sky Gondola, Shannon Falls, and the Stawamus Chief climbing routes and hiking trails.
