The City of Baraboo and Village of West Baraboo are official Ice Age Trail Communities. The designation, which comes from the Ice Age Trail Alliance, makes our community only the 18th Ice Age Trail Community in Wisconsin. Our prime central location on the Trail, our vibrant community, and our globally renowned glacial features, make Baraboo and West Baraboo a natural fit for this designation.

The Ice Age Trail is a National Scenic Trail located entirely within Wisconsin. From Interstate State Park on the MinnesotaWisconsin border to Potawatomi State Park in Door County, the yellow-blazed Ice Age Trail winds more than 1,200 miles, following the edge of the last continental glacier in Wisconsin. Locally, the Trail runs through the village, the city and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville/Baraboo-Sauk County.

One of only 11 National Scenic Trails, the Ice Age Trail is a premier hiking trail and conservation resource for silent sport and outdoor enthusiasts. The Trail traverses some of Wisconsin’s most scenic landscapes and tell the story of the last Ice Age by highlighting the state’s unique glacial features.

HO-CHUNK Culture

Ancestors of the Ho-Chunk and other Indigenous Peoples inhabited the Baraboo Area a thousand years ago leaving behind earthen burial mounds on the landscape. In the early 1800s four Ho-Chunk villages were located on the Baraboo River. By 1832 one village located in the Baraboo River valley had 25 lodges housing about 300 people.

The shallow river rapids at this point made for a good spot to cross the river and to harvest fish. The Ho-Chunk hunted deer, elk, and bear in this area, while also cultivating corn and collecting sap from nearby maple trees.

The Ho-Chunk village here was located amidst a concentration of 100 earthen burial mounds. Many were round, while others were effigy mounds built in the shape of animals, birds and spirits. The region once had over 1,500 mounds. Most were destroyed by farming, building, or road construction and only a handful remain.

One of the most notable remaining mounds is the Man Mound, located 3 miles northeast of Baraboo. It’s the only man-shaped mound left in

existence, and – despite having its legs destroyed by the construction of a road – is a National Historic Landmark. Other mounds can be found near Baraboo at Devil’s Lake State Park.

The tribe’s legacy is part of the cultural landscape. The Baraboo High School mascot, the Thunderbird, is derived from Ho-Chunk stories. The Baraboo Area Visitor Center is named after Chief Yellow Thunder, Wakajazigaa, a 19th century leader of the Ho-Chunk who resisted land cession treaties and remained on ancestral lands. The city of Baraboo recently named a 50-acre conservancy after Chief Naaga Keramana, principal chief of the Ho-Chunk who had his village here and led a delegation to meet with President John Quincy Adams in 1828.

The Ho-Chunk Nation is still an integral part of the community today. The Ho-Chunk culture is represented at various local events and through artwork that adorns area schools, trails, and buildings. Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells, Hotel and Convention Center is a prominent business in the area that employs nearly 1,500 local residents and brings in large audiences for concerts and other events year-round. The Ho-Chunk Nation is working on a prairie restoration on more than 1,500 acres at the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant, known to the Ho-Chunk people as Maa Wakacak.

Baraboo River

At just over 70 Miles long, the Baraboo River is said to be the longest free flowing river in the United States. Upstream of Rock Springs there are often log jams and down trees and portaging around them is best left for more experienced paddlers. However, the stretch between North Freedom and Baraboo is usually clear of obstructions and makes for an enjoyable day trip.

The ten-mile trip downstream from Firemen’s Park in North Freedom to Haskins Park in Baraboo will take about four to five hours. From Haskins Park through the village of West Baraboo to the Glenville landing at south edge of town will add another hour or two to your paddle. This is the most exciting stretch as the current picks up a bit and will take you through several sections of Class I rapids. These may seem intimidating to novice paddlers but the channel through the rocks is usually fairly evident.

Fishing is good along the Baraboo River, especially for smallmouth bass. Depending upon the season you are likely to see Canada geese, great blue heron, wood ducks, painted and snapping turtles, and other wildlife along the way. Bald eagles are commonly seen flying overhead.

The banks of the Baraboo River are fairly steep and muddy along most of its length and are private property. There are not many places to pull up for a picnic, but you can stop for a break at Giese Park or simply drift along and enjoy snacks from your boat.

As with any river, conditions can change almost daily and the Baraboo River can get a little angry after major rain events. It’s a good idea to check with Baraboo River Canoe and Kayak at (608) 737-1100 to be sure river conditions are compatible with your plans before you set out. They also offer rentals and a shuttle service (your boats or theirs) to get you back to your vehicle.

Discover the Big Top Parade

Historic circus wagons, exotic animals, marching bands and community floats will delight paradegoers, highlighting a weekend full of circus-themed fun.

“We were thrilled to bring back the parade last summer and are excited to see it again this year,” said Nanci Caflisch, co-chair of the Big Top Parade organizing committee. “I can’t wait to see all those smiles lining the parade route.”

Live entertainment will delight circus fans downtown before the parade steps off at 11 a.m.

In fact, the circus-themed entertainment will begin Thursday, June 22 when Professor Stich’s Original Circus Band performs on the courthouse lawn as part of the Concerts on the Square series. The Al. Ringling Theatre,

a historic site in its own right, will host entertainment throughout the weekend, as well.

“We’re thrilled to see cherished annual traditions like the parade and its related events continue,” said George Althoff, Executive Director of the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber works with the Big Top Parade committee and Circus World staff in presenting the parade.

This year’s parade will take on the Old West theme Circus World has adopted for its 2023 performance season. “Saddle up, pardner,” advised Scott O’Donnell, Executive Director at Circus World. “This will be the finest show north of the Pecos.”
