Years ago, God put questions on my heart that changed my prayer life.

First, I asked myself, “What would happen if I prayed more and did other things less?”

What if I prayed more and slept less, checked the news less or watched television less? Today, I might also ask: “What if I prayed more and followed social media less?”

Next, I considered: “Is there any area of my life that would suffer if I prayed more?” Would more prayer make me less loving a husband and dad, less effective a preacher or less wise a leader? /// SEE PAGE 10

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)— Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee (SBC EC) President Ronnie Floyd announced a new five-year initiative in conjunction with multiple entities to reach every person with the Gospel in every town, every city, every state and every nation.

GUERRERO, Mexico—A missions team of four from Atoka Coal Association witnessed a move of the Lord in January.

During a nine-day mission trip to Altamirano, a city in Guerrero, Mexico, this team experienced 164 people make professions of faith in Christ.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and his wife Sarah, the First Lady of Oklahoma, shared that the idea for an Oklahoma Governor’s prayer breakfast came to them while they attended the National Prayer Breakfast when Stitt was campaigning for governor.

Stitt and others prayed about the idea from that time through Tuesday, Feb. 18, when more than 1,000 Oklahomans gathered at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for the inaugural Oklahoma Governor’s Prayer Breakfast event.

The event, which was facilitated and planned by the non-profit organization Oklahoma Capitol Culture and Joel Harder, brought together people from various denominations and faith groups.

Harder urged attendees to pray, quoting 1 Tim. 2:1-2: “I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and

A group described as “grassroots” Southern Baptists announced the formation of the Conservative Baptist Network Friday, Feb. 14. Group spokesperson Brad Jurkovich, pastor of Bossier City, La., First, told Baptist Press the group was launched to address concerns about the direction of the SBC. Jurkovich is the only person publicly identified as part of the group’s leadership. He declined to share names of other leaders, though he said it was “really local pastor-driven.”

Oklahomans gathered for the inaugural Governor’s Prayer Breakfast early in the morning on February 18. More than one thousand people assembled, 10 to a table, at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and others gathered at 40 remote locations around our state. The chaplain to the United States Senate, Admiral Barry C. Black, delivered the keynote address.

Actually, he preached a powerful sermon, “Embracing the Power of Prayer.”

It was my distinct honor to voice the prayer for Governor Stitt and the other elected officials in his administration, who were introduced and asked to stand. The following is the text of this prayer:

“LORD God Almighty, our Creator, Redeemer and King, You are holy, perfect in righteousness, eternal and always good. We come to You, prompted to pray by Your Holy Spirit. We come confidently before Your throne in the Name of Jesus who teaches us to call You our Father.

“Our Father, You are ever opposed to the proud, but You always give grace to the humble.

These men and women are not standing here in pride of position; they are humble before You, before us, standing in the need of prayer.

“First, Father, we give You thanks.

We thank You for Governor Stitt, Lt. Governor Pinnell and every government leader now standing. Thank You for their families who serve with them, sacrifice with them and, at times, suffer with them. We thank You for their ability, opportunity and authority, all of which are from You and for You.

“Now Father, we humble ourselves and ask.

“Protect each one of these men and women from evil: the evil in their hearts, the evil in our world, and the evil one who is working to undo them. We ask You to give them wisdom for their work, the true wisdom that involves both knowing and doing. Lord, give them grace to live and to serve as Your faithful stewards who will one day give an account to You. Father, may each one standing here today do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with You. “Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the Great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever.

My son and I recently watched the NBA All Star game. He was mesmerized watching the athletic achievements of LeBron James and seemed especially thrilled to watch players with an Oklahoma connection, like Trae Young and Chris Paul.

The look of awe on my son’s face reminded me of another time I saw a look of awe on a kid’s face. It was the face of a kid in Oklahoma whom I saw meet real-life missionaries at the annual Mission Ignition event.

The 2020 Mission Ignition event, which is set for Feb. 29, “is an opportunity for kids in first-sixth grades to experience missions firsthand. Kids are introduced to exciting mission

activities, meet actual missionaries and learn about missions in the United States and around the world.”

Thus, Mission Ignition connects kids not only to the Gospel mission of Southern Baptists, but also to missionaries, even ones with a connection to Oklahoma. Find out more about Mission Ignition by visiting oklahomabaptists.org/mission-ignition.

Of course, Mission Ignition is just one part of the larger tapestry God is using to reach the nations.

When you interview current missionaries serving with the International Mission Board (IMB), about how God called them to the mission field, you learn that God has used many people, places and events to call out missionaries.

For some, they first caught the vision for missions because their pastor focused so intently on sharing the Good News around the world. For others, they felt the call at Falls Creek or Oklahoma Baptist University. Still others cite Baptist Collegiate Ministries or taking a shortterm mission trip as being key to their call to vo-

cational missions.

In a recent interview with IMB President Paul Chitwood, it was noted that we need more people to surrender to a call to missions. Increasingly, the funding, prayer and support network and training are well in place; we just need more women and men to answer the call.

Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest” (Matt. 9:37-38).

Not all believers are called to international missions.

But all of us are called to pray and to local missions.

Let’s pray that God will raise up more missionaries from among us—that He would call more missionaries like Lottie Moon or Jim Elliott. Or that He would raise up another Rosalee Mills, who surrendered to missions near the end of Falls Creek’s first camp session in 1917.

In addition to these missionary “all stars” whose names are known to many, we also pray that God would raise up people whose names we may never know, for security or other reasons. Today, will you join that prayer? Do it again, O Lord. Raise them up and send us out!

Many years ago, while sitting in a meeting with several leaders and pastors in another state, some words were spoken that have haunted me; words that seem to underscore the main reason we battle racial division in Southern Baptist life.

We were meeting about a large congregation becoming a key church and allowing a black church to meet with them. During the 1970s, church planting was not done by conventions or associations; it was done through a partnership with churches known as “Key Churches.”

At this meeting I heard it asked, “Why not let them have their own?”

After a while, I recall one pastor saying, “They’re not like us. They don’t worship like we do; I think it would be better to give them a little money and let them have their own.”

Years later, I’m still hearing of congregations asking, “Why do we need to bring ‘those’ children into our church? Why can’t they stay down there with their own kind?”

This idea of “let them have their own” is destructive and perpetuates racial division. We can approve all the resolutions we want on racial reconciliation but still miss the need to be reconciled.

The Word of God commands us to be reconciled to Him and one another, if our reconciliation is to the God who made everything, then our reconciliation to each other would need no repeating. Words are just words until they are acted upon.

I believe it is time we stop thinking that our problem is one of merely black and white; it is time we instead bind ourselves together in prayer to fight the increasing problem between darkness and light.

There is a song that says we were blinded by the light, and I think the bright lights and blinking signs have blinded us all from the fact that we still need to challenge the darkness of the sin that makes us all captives of this world.

Jesus said we are many members but one body. What if the hand said the feet are different, so let them have their own, or if the head said the mouth is different, so let it have its own? Where would the body be? I submit we are all parts of the body of Jesus Christ.

In the early years of Southern Baptist church life, everybody worshiped together, at the same time in the same

place. Even though the black worshippers were relegated to sitting in the balcony, still everyone worshipped together in one place at one time.

During this month labeled as Black History Month, I encourage all of us to remember American history is not only an Anglo history; it’s also European, Asian, Hispanic, Native American and Black. Our history is like grandma’s patch work quilt; it takes many different shapes and colors to make it complete.

The statement I mentioned in my opening was just another statement of ecclesiastical racial segregation and reveals a mentality that must be combatted. That mentality even fueled some of the division and destruction we witnessed almost 100 years ago, during the Tulsa Race Massacre.

Churches sometimes have a ministry (e.g. African American or Hispanic) that meets in another part of the building.

The challenge is: how can we go overseas and preach to non-English speaking saints with the help of an interpreter, but then come home to a separated congregation and consider it multicultural? Whether we mean to or not, putting them in another part of the building can subtly be communicating “Let them have their own.”

With God’s help, we can see a day when racial divisions are healed on earth as they are in heaven.

Battling racial division

I don’t remember how or when or even where we were when my wife and I started labeling all three grandsons collectively as the “yada hoodies.” Many times when they come walking up to our door, they are goofing around S Keystone Cops, so callDthe I Elike S I Fhoodies” A S“yada C Lthem ing seemed appropriate to us.

My wife got a text from my daughter-in-love one morning, saying she and the three grandsons were coming over. I was in the other room when my wife yelled, “Walker, the yada hoodies are on their way,” and a smile crossed my face, because I love nothing more than hanging out with those little guys.

I heard thisI term S the first time from my fatherC E for VO in-law; I am not sure in what context he used it.

He was a big, rugged man with hands the size of a ham, but his heart was even bigger.

He and I used to do bus ministry each Saturday and Sunday. We would visit the children and their parents on Saturday to remind them what time we were going to pick them up. On Sunday morning, he would drive the old rickety yellow bus into a lower-income housing complex, and the children would come running out to meet us.

As he opened the bus door, a smile would spread across his face, and his eyes would get moist as he greeted each child by name. His heart was moved by the things and people God loved.

My father-in-law was also a master of using or making up expressions that I didn’t grow up with.

say they were “at their wits’ end”? I think my mom used it when referring to my brothers and me. But it comes from Psalm 107: 27, “They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end.”

Have you ever said something was like “The blind leading the blind?” I know I have.

This phrase comes from the book of Matthew. “Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit” (Matt. 15:14).

If someone has just passed a test, they might report that they passed it by the skin of their teeth. I am not sure who thought that teeth had skin, but the expression means they escaped by the narrowest of margins. It comes from the book of Job, where after a series of trials, Job eventually escaped “by the skin of my teeth” (Job 19:20b).

I love the study of the origins of words. When I was in England, I took a one-day etymology class. The word “etymology” came from the Greek word etumos, which means “true” and ology, which mean “to study.”

So etymology is the study of words’ true meanings.

When you study the Bible, make sure to “go the extra mile.” “And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles” (Matt. 5:41). That means you’ll not only learn the meaning behind the words but also get to know the true One who stands behind them. That’s what I pray every day for the “yada hoodies,” too.

I don’t think that he had a “government issued” back, but when it got sore, he blamed it on the government.

On the other side of the house was my wife’s mother, who was of Norwegian descent. She would use the Norwegian phrase “Uff Da!” which is equivalent to the Jewish expression, “Oy Veh!” Between the “Dad bob its” and the “Uff Das,” it wasn’t much of a stretch for us to start calling our grandchildren “yada hoodies.” I bet your family has some words or phrases unique to your family.

My family wasn’t much different. My dad put an “er” on everything, and he influenced me. When those “Tieyoter” commercials come on television, my wife reminds me that “Toyota” is the real pronunciation.

I grew up in Missouri, but the state above us was “Iower,” and its capital was Des Moines. My dad always dreamed of visiting the tropical state of “Hawaiier.” All in all, it’s a miracle I can speak somewhat proper English.

Easter marks ‘Baptism Sunday’ in SBC: Churches urged to ‘Fill the Tank’ on Easter /// PREVIEWED ON COVER >> by Tess Schoonhoven

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)—J.D. Greear, president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), is calling SBC churches to participate in a nationwide focus on baptism this Easter Sunday, April 12.

After the success of the first “Baptism Sunday” in September 2019, Greear and other SBC leadership hope to continue to focus on growing proclamations of faith through public baptism services.

“We have heard some of the most amazing stories coming out of our Baptism Sunday in September,” Greear said. “We heard stories of family members, friends and even taxi drivers responding in baptism—many of whom had been prayed over for years. I believe last fall was just scratching the surface of what God wants to do, and will do, when we extend the call to believe and be baptized. Many sit in our pews that simply need to be instructed and invited.”

Greear explained that a Baptism Sunday service is an opportunity for thousands of people in churches to immediately respond to the Gospel by taking that first step of obedience and faith.

“Many of the people who will fill our pews on Easter will come as interested spectators,” Greear noted. “When we invite them to be baptized, we’re calling them to make a decision to be followers of Jesus—and that’s exactly what people who hear the Gospel need to do.”

Ronnie Floyd, SBC Executive Committee president and CEO, said that while churches should baptize regularly, “emphasizing a day like Easter takes baptism to an entirely different level.

“Challenging people to be baptized on this Easter Sunday makes this a memorable day they will never forget,” Floyd continued. “It also serves as a Gospel illustration in each worship service that a pastor can mention in his sermon as he calls people to follow Jesus, even into the public declaration of baptism.”

Because of the large of amount of potentially unbelieving attendees on Easter, Greear said it is a powerful opportunity to present the true change the Gospel makes in the hearts of those who believe.

“Believer’s baptism is the most meaningful, biblical, measureable indicator of the advancement of the Gospel,” said Hance Dilbeck, executive director-treasurer of Oklahoma Baptists. “As Oklahoma Baptists we have made one of our major goals to increase baptisms 20 percent by 2025. Having as many of the churches in our state as possible to observe baptisms on Easter Sunday would be a significant step toward advancing the Gospel in Oklahoma.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)—Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee (SBC EC) President Ronnie Floyd announced a new five-year initiative in conjunction with multiple entities to reach every person with the Gospel in every town, every city, every state and every nation.

In his address Monday night Feb. 17, Floyd presented this Convention-wide initiative to members of the EC and a packed crowd in attendance for the group’s February 2020 meeting.

“Vision 2025 is not a slogan or rallying cry,” Floyd said. “It’s a path forward to help us reimagine a new future together of reaching the world for Jesus Christ—every person, every town, every city, every state and every nation.”

Vision 2025 contains five major strategic actions for the SBC to take on over the next five years: 1. Increase the total number of full-time, fully funded missionaries by a net gain of 500, giving the SBC 4,200 full-time, fully funded missionaries through the International Mission Board (IMB).

2. Add 6,000 new churches to the Southern Baptist family, giving the SBC more than 50,000 cooperating churches.

3. Increase the total number of workers in the field through a new emphasis on “calling out the called,” and then preparing those who are called out by the Lord.

4. Turn around the ongoing decline in the SBC in reaching, baptizing and discipling 12- to 17-yearolds in the prime of their teenage years.

GUERRERO, Mexico—A missions team of four from Atoka Coal Association witnessed a move of the Lord in January. During a nine-day mission trip to Altamirano, a city in Guerrero, Mexico, this team experienced 164 people make professions of faith in Christ.

The team consisted of Randy Hurt, director of missions in Atoka Coal Association; Jim Lewis, pastor of Coalgate, First; Tristan Robinson, missions leader at Coalgate, First; and Brock Woolf, youth pastor at Coalgate, First.

Woolf shared with the Baptist Messenger a journal on the mission trip, reporting the team served with Fishers of Men medical caravan. Overall, this mission team served 808 people with the medical caravan.

Woolf’s journal began with the team’s travelling experience, flying from Dallas to Mexico City and then to Acapulco. From there, the team caravanned to Altamirano, which was an all-day journey that included a truck breaking down and congested roads of political groups blocking the roads.

Once in Altamirano, the missions team spent two days helping people with medical treatments.

“We had many different stations for people to get medical help, optometry and dentistry,” Woolf said. “We had a nurse who administered shots and minor treatments. A small pharmacy was set up to provide medication, and a doctor gave examinations and advised patients.

“The evangelism team was there to share the Gospel with the people,” Woolf continued. “They were ready to sit and talk and answer questions that people had about the Bible, and (we) were excited to share what the Bible says and what God had done in (our) lives.”

Woolf gave his thoughts about sharing the Gospel with more than 800 people and experiencing the 164 professions of faith in Christ. “It was incredible to see and to be a part of God working in their lives,” he said.

On their journey back to Acapulco, the team had some minor encounters but “nothing too terrible,” Woolf said. After stopping for lunch, they encountered another truck breakdown, but Woolf said one of the national Christians named Juan who was part of their team knew how to get the truck working again.

“He is kind of a magician when it comes to fixing vehicles,” Woolf said about Juan.

After arriving safely back in Acapulco, the team decided to stay an extra day and worship with their friends on Sunday. Rescheduling their flights turned out to be another blessing, as Woolf explained.

“We found out that the road in Teloloapan was blocked again with cars backed up,” he said. Traffic was at a standstill all day. “If we had stuck to the (original) plan, our way back would have been blocked, and we would have missed our flights back home. It reminded me of Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Woolf concluded his mission trip report acknowledging God’s sovereignty.

“Even though our world is crazy, and things don’t always go the way we think they should, God still has a plan for us,” he said.

Atoka Coal Association will continue to do mission work in Guerrero, specifically in Altamirano, the association’s adopted region. The association provides ongoing support to Caplet Lorenzano, Guerrero state director of missions, as well as five churches and missionary pastors.

BARTLESVILLE—The Bartlesville Hope Clinic in Washington Osage Association recently completed a $1.2 million facility in the Oak Park area. According to Monty Hale, director of missions in Washington Osage Association, the building is completely debt free and was dedicated the weekend of Feb. 7-9.

Hope Clinic has served 1,543 medical patients and 141 dental patients. The clinic has scheduled 4,392 appointments, filled 15,000 perscriptions and administered 2,600 flu shots.

What do people do without a church family?

I often ask myself this question as I see the church surround those going through life transitions. As new babies arrive, physical needs arise, or seasons of loss weave in T I S T S me to see and out of church members’ B AitPastonishes A H O M Alives, L K O T how the local body of believers assist H L I GtoHsupport, H IGmoves E C R U O S E R those members in their time of need. and surround The church does not exist solely to meet our own needs, but the Bible is clear that many spiritual, physical and emotional needs are to be met as the body of Christ cares for its members.

Yet even those connected to a church family may miss out on what God has ordained in providing the local church. For many, the church is a place to consume. Sundays offer a place to take the kids, get free coffee, and take in some songs and a message. Entertainment value may fluctuate, but all in all, it’s not bad for free.

The church is an easy place to be a consumer, but that is not what the church is intended to be. When care, correction and companionship are needed on the road of the Christian life, the local church is the God-given, Biblical prescription.

Dear Dave, My husband and I are on Baby Step 3b, and we’re saving for a house. We’re out of debt and both of us make good money, plus we each have 20-year level term life insurance policies with coverage equaling 10 times our individual incomes. We also have an emergency fund equal to six months of expenses. I recently received a promotion at work, with a subsequent raise of $10,000. Should I update my life insurance policy to reflect this new income?

—Maria Dear Maria, I think you’re OK right now. I’d evaluate it, and maybe update the amount every three or four years. But as you get out of debt and build wealth, and as the kids get older, the real question to ask yourselves is how much less life insurance do you need?

As your income increases and you get in better and better financial shape, it’s not going to be necessary to have 10 to 12 times your income wrapped up in life insurance policies. That’s just a starting point.

Would your husband and any kids be well taken care of based on your current life insurance amount? Would you and any kids be okay based on his life insurance? If the answer to both questions is yes, you’re good!

We all have ONE great problem.

We have a sin problem. Every person has rebelled against God and sin has broken their relationship with God. “…all have sinned” Romans 3:23 and “…the wages of sin is death.”

There is ONE great hope. God loves us so much that He sent Christ to die for our sin. Christ has taken care of our sin problem. “Christ also died for sins, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God.” 1 Peter 3:18

We have ONE great decision. We must repent of our sin and believe the gospel. “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

If you have never made a personal decision to accept God’s gift of love and salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, why not make this decision now? To begin this new direction in life pray this in your own words:

Dear God, I know that I’m a sinner. I believe that Christ died on the cross for my sins and then rose from the dead. Please forgive me of all my sin. I turn away from my sin and confess you as Lord and trust You alone for salvation. Thank you for your love, forgiveness, and the free gift of eternal life. Amen.
