New Protective Uniform Employee Ordering Events This summer, Baptist Health is adopting newly designed, protective uniforms made with Vestex® technology which has fluid-repellant, moisturewicking and antimicrobial properties. This innovative new fabric is not only protective, but also quite comfortable and breathable.

Hospital staff who work more than 250 hours a year and have frequent inpatient interactions will receive one, two or three sets of scrubs (depending on number of hours worked) for free during this initial implementation. Staff in surgical services and procedural areas who must wear surgical scrubs will receive a complimentary lab coat or scrub jacket made with Vestex technology.

All staff who are interested in purchasing Vestex protective attire can do so. Payroll deduction is an option for additional items purchased during the Ordering Events.

These uniforms are being made just for Baptist under a newly launched brand called myGuardianTM. You can review the style choices and size chart on the intranet.

To make sure you order the right size, please attend one of the following events near your home or work. There will be samples for you to see before placing your order. If you miss these ordering days, you will need to make arrangements to get your allocation and place your order.

• Check with your manager if you are unsure of your facility’s ordering schedule.

• Bring your employee badge.

• Allow at least 20 minutes.

• No appointment is necessary.

• You may attend any session on any campus.

March 2-8 is Patient Safety Awareness Week

As a proud partner of the National Patient Safety Foundation, Baptist Health will observe Patient Safety Awareness Week from March 2-8. This year’s theme, “Navigate Your Health…Safely,” highlights the need for healthcare providers to ensure that patients and consumers are actively engaged in the healthcare process, whether visiting the doctor for a routine exam or entering the hospital for surgery. During the week, daily Patient Safety Spotlights will be sent via email to highlight some of our patient safety activities that are part of our journey to becoming a High Reliability Organization. These include Fair and Just Culture training, our adoption of protective uniforms, implementation of Bar Coded Medication Administration, and action planning using the results of the AHRQ Culture of Patient Safety Survey.

Patient Safety Contest

How would you define patient safety? As part of our Culture of Safety initiative, Baptist Health invites employees to develop a definition of patient safety. Bar Coded Medication Administration Training Begins

On March 3, Bar Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) trainers will begin their formal training, and on March 24, superusers at Baptist Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital will begin their training.

All classes have been assigned in eLearning. The training includes a prerequisite module, as well as a classroom session. Both are mandatory.

In our focus on a Culture of Patient Safety, the new Bar Coded Medication Administration assistive technology is best practice because it has been proven to reduce medication administration errors by as much as 54-86% (Strykowski, Hadsall, Sawchyn, VanSickle, and Niznick, 2013). When used correctly, clinicians change their behaviors and avert potentially harmful actions (Sakowski & Ketchel, 2013). The BCMA project team looks forward to continued collaboration with the clinical community and advancing toward making our patients safer during medication administration.

Gate River Run Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed to staff a water station at the Reid Building during the GATE River Run on Saturday, March 15. The GATE River Run is the largest 15K race in the United States, with more than 24,000 runners participating last year. New Office Specialist in Rehabilitation Department Welcome to Sheree Brown, who recently transferred from the Baptist Jacksonville Community Health Department to Baptist Nassau Rehabilitation, where she is an Office Specialist II. Summer Volunteen Program Baptist South is now taking names of teens interested in participating in this summer’s Volunteen Program.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital Annual Autism Symposium is March 12 The Sixth Annual Autism Symposium, titled “Current Medical Evidence and Interventions Regarding Autism,” is Wednesday, March 12, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, at the UNF University Center. It will feature two nationally known speakers.

Celine Saulnier, PhD, is clinical director of Research at the Marcus Autism Center and assistant professor, Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine.

William Sharp, PhD, is director of the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program at the Marcus Autism Center, and assistant professor, Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine.

The cost to attend is $60 and includes lunch; however, Baptist employees may attend the symposium for $20.
