he 2013-2014 Florida Forum kicked off with great fanfare on October 16 with Tony Blair. Next in the series is bestselling author Michael Lewis on November 12, and Governor Jeb Bush on January 16. The 2013-2014 Florida Forum Chairs, Poppy Clements and Rosa Maria King, have done a masterful job producing a thoughtprovoking series to benefit Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

I invite you to join us at the 37th Art & Antiques Show, Impressions of India. Months of creative planning, enthusiasm and dedication by 2013 Art & Antiques Show Chairs Katherine Forrester, Laura Mann Magevney and Natalie Rosenberg have contributed to what will be a spectacular Opening Night Party and Show weekend. PATIENT PROFILE ELLE FRANCESCA HARITON, AGE 5 WRITTTEN BY HER MOTHER, LORI HARITON

I

t was Monday, December 1, 2008. I woke and went straight to Elle’s room, as I did every morning. I looked forward to peeking into the crib of my sweet tenmonth-old baby girl and seeing her startled look when I appeared, and then watching her laugh hysterically in delight!

This day was different. I found Elle unresponsive, in almost a catatonic state. Her breathing was shallow, her body flaccid. What I did not know was that Elle was in Status epilepticus, a life-threatening condition in which the brain is in a state of persistent seizure.

Elle was rushed to the emergency room at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. When the doctors checked her vitals, her temperature was 90 degrees. She was breathing but barely moving. In an effort to determine what was going on, they hooked her up to an EEG and immediately discovered she was still having a seizure. They gave her an injection to control the seizure and rushed her to get a CAT scan.

The CAT scan showed too much fluid in her brain ventricles, so they did an MRI. In that moment our lives changed with four words from the ER Doctor: “The MRI is abnormal.”

Elle spent the next ten days in the PICU being monitored for additional seizure activity while the team of doctors sought a diagnosis. The nurses were there every step of the way to offer encouraging words of hope and support as I fell apart on a daily basis. Toward the end of the week, the diagnosis came.

Elle had been born with Lissencephaly, a rare brain disorder in which, during the developmental stages, many cells did not migrate to the correct places; some did not migrate at all. This left areas undeveloped—some really important places such as the ones that control motor skills, speech and emotion.

Most children with this disorder do not mentally mature beyond that of a one-year-old. A shortened life-span, seizures that are extremely difficult to control, a long list of seizure medications and feeding tubes to prevent aspiration all accompany the diagnosis. Although her doctor felt there would be some developments, he was certain Elle would most likely never sit, stand, walk or talk. She would be dependent on medications to control seizures and bound to a wheelchair. But as we say in my

house, “ D i a g n o s i s, Schmiagnosis!”

After five years, seven months and three weeks, I have learned to focus on the things that Elle can do! It’s much brighter that way.

She can sit unassisted, manipulate toys, hold her own sippy cup, finger feed herself, and is even learning to use a fork and spoon, thanks to her outstanding therapists at school. Elle is very smart but faces the challenge of not being able to verbally communicate like others and is bound by the limitations of her body.

Elle’s ability to make choices continues to amaze me.

She crawls out of her room to find me wherever I am in the house. This sounds silly, but it is a huge thought process for her brain and takes a lot of coordination to make that happen. She will choose one food over another—usually the one with the higher sugar content. I think she smells cupcakes from ten feet away. When I fasten her into her carseat or wheelchair and give her a toy, if it is not the one she wants, she tosses it out before I can even blink.

Elle has faced many challenges, but with the support and expertise of her doctors at Wolfson, she has been able to overcome many of them. At two years old she developed cataracts in both eyes and was without her vision for almost six weeks. A blessing came in the name of Dr. Lee Hunter who was able to surgically implant new lenses in Elle’s eyes, which restored her vision. The following year Elle spent eight days at Wolfson after developing mastoiditis. We are grateful to Dr. Horlbeck for his surgical expertise and care. In 2008, a diagnosis of hip dysplasia brought Dr. Eric Loveless into our life. Most recently, Elle has developed neuromuscular scoliosis and will wear a back brace for a couple of years before she will have to have a spinal fusion surgery. Between Elle’s perseverance, prayers and the true gift of having Dr. Loveless on her team, I know she will be okay.

I will always be extremely grateful for the care that she—and I—have received at Wolfson. Elle has an outstanding team of doctors and nurses, all making sure she receives the absolute best care available. n

Antiques have been a lifelong passion for Catlin, and she shares her expertise with the design community as well as the public through this educational seminar. (State Approved CEU - 3 hrs. WILLIAM NASH, IV FRIDAY, DEC. 6, 11:30 AM illiam Nash is one of the Southeast’s up-and-coming experts in antiques and decorative arts.

Carrying on the trade and tradition of his father, Bill III, William helps his father operate E.W. Nash & Son, an antiques restoration and appraisal firm located in Jacksonville, Fla. One of the nation’s youngest in his field, William has a passion for history, tradition and collecting, and is revitalizing the world of antiques for the next generation. When he is not in his workshop or out in the field appraising, William enjoys restoring and maintaining his 1924 home, which he affectionately calls “Nash Abbey.” n
