They Are the Reason We Bounce Back

Every day in South Florida, nearly 140 new cases of cancer are diagnosed. The means that right now, someone could be sitting in a room and hearing the words “you have cancer.” We are committed to our goal of providing every patient with access to a clinical trial when standard treatment options are not enough.

Maddie

Peter

Maddie was four years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Thankfully, Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute is uniquely equipped to treat pediatric cancers, with the most up-to-date protocols that give patients like her the best options. The day her physician, Doured Daghistani, M.D. called to say she was 100 percent cancer free, her response was pure joy. It has now been five years since that day, five years of cancer in remission, and Maddie has officially rung the gong, marking the incredible milestone of five years in remission. A new, happy and healthy chapter in her life is starting, thanks to the work and support of everyone on her team.

Peter wrote off his fevers and persistent cough as a cold or the flu. Then he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. His doctors at Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute had access to a clinical trial and a targeted therapy that treated his specific cancer with a single daily pill. Today, Peter walks 14.2 miles every year at Bounce Back from Cancer and encourages others to join him. He says that connecting with people on the course and seeing what is being done to raise the money and where it’s going means the world to him.

“Yay! It’s all gone. I’m free. I can run. I can do anything.”

“To see how the foundation utilizes the money makes me a believer. Today, I am full of hope.”

Bounce Back from CancerTM – Why We Bounce Back 2026

Bounce Back from Cancer is South Florida’s premier fundraising walk supporting lifesaving cancer research and clinical trials at Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute. Powered by a partnership between Baptist Health Foundation and the Miami HEAT, the event unites thousands each year with one shared goal: a world without cancer.

Carolina

Courtney

Carolina was always in motion: hosting events, raising children and showing up for everyone. Then she was diagnosed with primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma. She didn’t know what to expect, but the confidence and support of her Baptist Health team carried her through. She received chemotherapy and immunotherapy — a highly-specialized, genetically targeted treatment. It saved her life. Carolina crossed the finish line at Bounce Back from Cancer in remission. She now bounces back as a survivor and is committed to giving back.

At 32, Courtney was diagnosed with an extremely rare vaginal cancer. Her physician, John Diaz, M.D. at Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute spent hours on the phone with colleagues around the world, searching not just for a cure, but for a way to preserve her ability to have children. He proposed a uterine transposition, the first one performed at Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute. Now cancer free, Courtney walks 14.2 miles with her physician every year.

“Today I am cancer free, and I’m really loving my life.”

“Without research, I wouldn’t have the chance I have today. That’s why I show up for Bounce Back from Cancer.”

— Carolina Chaljub, cancer survivor

— Courtney De Stefano, cancer survivor

These patients have inspired us with their strength and resilience. Research supported by people like you through Bounce Back from Cancer helps create more stories of hope.

Why Clinical Trials Change EVERYTHING

• Clinical trials are at the heart of all advances

in cancer treatment.

• Trials can extend and improve quality of life

for patients.

• They provide new ways to prevent, detect,

treat and cure cancer.

• They provide access to promising new

treatments before they’re available elsewhere.

• For patients with unique situations or rare

diagnoses, a clinical trial can open a door to treatment that wasn’t there before.

Brain Cancer

Metastatic Lung Cancer

Phase II Study of Pembrolizumab, Olaparib and Temozolomide in Patients with Glioma. This study tests whether combining two therapies that block cancer cells from repairing their DNA with immunotherapy that helps the body recognize and destroy damaged cells can shrink recurrent brain tumors.

Phase II Adaptive Study of Local Ablative Therapy (LAT) for Patients with Metastatic Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) using Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) as an Integral Biomarker. This study tests whether using blood markers to detect early signs of cancer can help doctors better time targeted, local tumor treatments to improve outcomes for people with advanced lung cancer.
