PREFAZIONE di Giovanna Melandri presidente fondazione maxxi

Divertente o malinconico, feroce o tenero, amaro o appassionato, Zerocalcare non ci lascia indifferenti. Ha le qualità per combinare l’estro creativo e una rappresentazione acuminata dei nostri tempi. È un fenomeno editoriale, ma non un’invenzione dei social, dipinge ambienti e sentimenti ignorati o sviliti nelle forme ufficiali della comunicazione culturale e traccia un manifesto generazionale privo di condizionamenti ideologici e di ossequio verso i poteri. Le strisce, i libri, i murales, le magliette e le locandine che ne hanno scandito l’evoluzione sono riusciti a penetrare oltre il circuito chiuso e spesso autoreferenziale dell’espressione artistica per diventare, fumetto dopo fumetto, una galleria di figure emblematiche di una condizione sociale e di una mutazione urbana.

Il MAXXI, ospitando e coproducendo Zerocalcare. Scavare fossati - Nutrire coccodrilli, ha voluto cogliere la dimensione acquisita da una personalità innovativa e controcorrente.

Quella sua originaria impronta underground (alla quale peraltro è rimasto e rimane fedele) non si manifesta come vincolo ma come un’ispirazione alla coerenza di linguaggi, temi, emozioni irriverenti e provocatori.

Il nostro museo non si vede e non si presenta come un’istituzione ingessata, quasi inaccessibile. Anzi, esplora tendenze e paradigmi della creatività contemporanea con una libertà, una sensibilità piene verso ogni manifestazione artistica. Il fumetto irrompe negli spazi del MAXXI, vi infonde temi sui quali la nostra riflessione e la nostra ricerca vanno avanti da tempo: il mondo web, il lavoro precario, il disagio sociale, la rivolta civile.

Michele Rech, il geniale artefice delle storie e contro-storie di Zerocalcare, certamente si schermisce quando viene definito un critico tra i più lucidi delle diseguaglianze e dei diritti calpestati, un interprete formidabile delle nostre ossessioni comuni. Eppure con i suoi personaggi e i suoi dialoghi – fino al suo alter ego protagonista del film La profezia dell’armadillo presentato all’ultimo festival del cinema di Venezia e di questa bella mostra curata da Giulia Ferracci, realizzata in collaborazione con Silvia Barbagallo e coprodotta da Minimondi Eventi – accende la curiosità di un pubblico vasto, trasversale, smaliziato. Nella sua opera di denuncia politica come nella narrazione del viaggio tra i conflitti internazionali, dal G8 2001 di Genova alla difesa dei curdi siriani, è innegabile l’originalità di un impegno civile senza schemi né frontiere.

Benvenuto al MAXXI, a Zerocalcare, al pubblico dei suoi affezionati fan, ai visitatori che con le sue tavole scopriranno questo luogo, fucina di generi, culture, idee.

Funny or melancholic, fierce or tender, sad or passionate, Zerocalcare never fails to make an impact. He has the ability to combine creative flair with an extremely insightful analysis of our times. He’s a commercial phenomenon, but not a product of social networks: he portrays environments and feelings ignored or dismissed by cultural communication in its official form and sketches a generation’s manifesto which is completely free from ideological conditioning and deference towards power. Strips, books, murals, t-shirts and posters that characterised his development managed to go beyond the closed and often self-referential circuit of artistic expression to become, comic after comic, a museum of characters that are emblematic of a social condition and urban change.

MAXXI, hosting and coproducing Zerocalcare. Digging Trenches – Feeding Crocodiles, aimed to grasp the true dimension of an innovative and nonconformist personality. His original underground stamp (to which he has always remained true) was never seen as a hindrance, but rather an inspiration to the congruence of tones, themes and emotions that are often irreverent and challenging.

Our museum is not seen nor does it present itself as a stuffy, nigh inaccessible institution, quite the opposite, in fact: it explores the tendencies and models of contemporary creativity with a sincere freedom and openness towards all artistic expressions. Comics burst onto the MAXXI scene, inspiring themes which we have been dwelling over and analysing for a long time: the internet, precarious work, social discontent and civil unrest.

Michele Rech, the brains behind the stories and counterstories of Zerocalcare, shows great embarrassment when described as one of the most accomplished critics on inequality and oppression and a formidable interpreter of our common obsessions. Yet with his characters and dialogues – with his alter ego, star of La Profezia dell’Armadillo (The Armadillo Prophecy), featured in the latest Venice Film Festival as well as this wonderful exhibition, curated by Giulia Ferracci, developed in co-operation with Silvia Barbagallo and coproduced by Minimondi Eventi – he arouses the curiosity of a large, widespread and shrewd audience. In his more strictly political works as well as his narration of his experiences with international conflicts, from Genoa’s G8 in 2001 to the defense of Kurdish Syrians, one cannot deny the originality of a civic engagement that transcends both frameworks and frontiers.

Welcome to MAXXI, to Zerocalcare, to his hordes of affectionate fans, to visitors that through his pages will discover this place, crucible of genres, cultures, ideas.

Perché produrre questa mostra e decidere di collaborare con il MAXXI? Ho avuto la netta sensazione che fosse arrivato il momento giusto per Zerocalcare e che il MAXXI fosse il posto giusto, centrale ma laterale.

Dopo la formazione nei centri sociali, le lunghe ore di ripetizioni di francese, l’esperienza nei call center e i continui traslochi (sempre tutti a Rebibbia), dopo anni di militanza fisica e grafica a sostegno di campagne politiche (e per la verità sui troppi giovani picchiati o ammazzati da frange fasciste o dalla violenza delle forze dell’ordine), Michele Rech/Zerocalcare oggi, attraverso la propria opera, può raccontare la propria storia. Che, in fondo, è anche la nostra.

Nonostante la grande popolarità che lo ha portato a raggiungere un pubblico vasto e molto diverso dal suo ambiente, Zerocalcare è riuscito a rimanere sempre dentro a qualcosa di stretto, obliquo: Rebibbia, i centri sociali, il punk. Ma è proprio da questa prospettiva che, scegliendo la lotta come strumento, ha saputo allungare lo sguardo con una straordinaria capacità di lettura della realtà politica e sociale.

Attraversando i suoi racconti, è possibile tracciare quella che si rivela oggi come una vera e propria controstoria d’Italia, punteggiata da tanti eventi tragici che non hanno avuto la dignità di essere riconosciuti come fatti storicamente rilevanti ma che, considerati dalla giusta distanza – la nostra di adesso – sono all’origine del degrado civile di questo Paese. Fatti scritti e disegnati, collegati l’uno all’altro dal suo profondo tratto antifascista, che raccontano come questo degrado abbia funestato soprattutto la sinistra.

Se c’è un momento che segna irrimediabilmente l’inizio del declino del ruolo culturale e civile della sinistra sono i fatti di Genova 2001, per la loro ostensione di violenza inaudita e istituzionale. Zerocalcare ne ha fatto materia delle sue strisce. E lo ha fatto dalla prospettiva di chi ha il dono della doppia vista, di chi sa vedere in profondità il senso delle cose standoci dentro, grazie alla sua collocazione nei centri sociali, spesso invisibile alle istituzioni politiche, e con l’occhio del narratore che rielabora pubblicamente.

Zerocalcare non è un osservatore solitario, la sua storia si è sempre snodata attraverso la realizzazione di manifesti, fanzine per concerti, incontri, eventi, cortei che raccontano di una lotta collettiva viva, mai sopita, spesso considerata ingombrante o ignorata dalla sinistra organizzata nei partiti. Anche il suo modo di intendere il lavoro è lontano da personalismi, Michele ha sempre mantenuto viva la coscienza di essere parte di una collettività.

Il controcanto dell’armadillo che lo ha aiutato ad affinare il dialogo con se stesso non ne ha limitato lo sguardo al solipsismo; Zerocalcare ha mantenuto sempre chiaro chi sono i buoni e chi sono i cattivi, chi sono le persone libere e chi invece sono le persone compromesse, chi lotta contro ogni fascismo e chi invece lo incarna.

Il doppio sguardo di Zerocalcare non si perde nemmeno quando osserva i rapporti familiari, le amicizie, le difficoltà con ciò che è diverso da noi (penso a Kobane Calling), la generazione che rifugge il lavoro almeno quanto il lavoro rifugge lei.

Zerocalcare, insomma, ha trovato il tratto verbale e grafico più giusto e mette in fila, in una grande tavola delle tavole, come io credo sia questa mostra, la storia d’Italia recente, con un ordine e una chiarezza che possono avere un potere correttivo rispetto alle derive civili che ogni giorno montano in questo Paese.

La mostra è prodotta dall’associazione Minimondi Eventi insieme al MAXXI, con la cura di Giulia Ferracci e la ricerca scientifica di Oscar Glioti.

Minimondi Eventi è un’associazione che da molti anni lavora in Italia e all’estero producendo progetti culturali, mostre, festival legati a temi sociali, anche in territori a volte difficili o feriti come l’Aquila, Lamezia Terme, Palermo, Catania.

Un’associazione di persone che fanno le cose perché le sentono dentro.

I do things that I feel inside, but I can’t explain

Why curate this exhibition and team up with MAXXI? I have had the distinct feeling that it was the right time for Zerocalcare, and that MAXXI would be the right place, central, but lateral as it is.

After breaking teeth in the occupied spaces, the long hours of private French lessons, the experience in call centers and the numerous moves (always within Rebibbia), after years of physical and graphic militancy helping political campaigns, demanding truth for too many young people, beaten or killed by fascist groups, or by the violence of law enforcement, Michele Rech/ Zerocalcare today, through his body of work, can tell his story that is, in a way, also ours.

Despite the great popularity that has allowed him to reach a wide and diverse audience, Zerocalcare has managed to never stray from a narrow and oblique space: Rebibbia, the social centers, the punk scene. It’s that perspective that has allowed him to choose protest as an instrument, and broaden the scope of his gaze with extraordinary acumen in reading the political and social reality.

Through his tales it is possible to trace back what can now be called a proper counter history of Italy, dotted with tragic events that never were given the dignity of historical relevance but that, seen from the right distance – ours, now – are the origin point of the downward spiral of this Country. Facts written and drawn, connected by his fiercely anti fascist lines, that underscore how the left wing parties have been particularly damaged by this decline.

If there is a moment that defines the beginning of the cultural and civil role of the left in Italy it’s what happened in Genoa in 2001, for the senseless show of institutional violence. Zerocalcare has turned that into fuel for his strips. And he has done so from the point of view of one with double sight, one who is able to see deep in the sense of things while standing inside of them, thanks to his belonging to social centers, often invisible to political institutions, and with the eye of the narrator, publicly processing facts as narrative.

Zerocalcare is no lonely observer, his personal story has always gone hand in hand with the posters, fanzines for concerts, events, demonstration marches that speak of a living collective struggle, never dormant, often seen as embarrassing or ignored by the organized left of parties.

His work method is also far from personalism, and Michele has always kept in mind the fact that he is part of a community.

The snappy replies from the armadillo that have helped him hone the dialogue with himself have not made his gaze solipsistic; Zerocalcare has never forgotten who the good and the bad guys are, who are the free and who have compromised, who fights against any form of fascism and who embodies it.

Zerocalcare’s double gaze doesn’t wane even when it ponders family ties, friendship, the difficulties of dealing with what’s different from us (I’m thinking of Kobane Calling), the generation that is skeptical of work as much as the work market is skeptical of them.

Zerocalcare has found the right verbal and graphic tone and lines up, in a big page of pages, as I believe this exhibition to be, the recent history of Italy, with a neatness and clarity that can have a healing power to the civil shifts that run rampant in this Country every day.

The exhibition is produced by the Minimondi Eventi association alongside MAXXI, curated

by Giulia Ferracci and with scientific research by Oscar Glioti.

Zerocalcare e il coraggio che non diserta la società civile di Giulia Ferracci curatrice maxxi

Da sempre legato alla scena underground, esempio di una generazione cresciuta tra precariato e web, tra G8 di Genova e serie TV, Michele Rech (1983) è uno dei protagonisti italiani più rilevanti degli ultimi anni. Nato ad Arezzo, madrelingua francese, il fumettista è adottato da anni dalla capitale, nel quartiere popolare di Rebibbia, dove sono state create tutte le storie dei suoi libri, dalle prime autoproduzioni (2001) fino a Macerie prime Sei mesi dopo (2018).

Dalle fanzine, alle locandine per i centri sociali fino alle colonne del suo blog, Zerocalcare è diventato in breve tempo un caso editoriale. A partire dal 2011, quando pubblica il libro La Profezia dell’Armadillo, proseguendo fino a oggi con altri otto volumi e diverse storie brevi su quotidiani e settimanali nazionali, che gli sono valsi la fama di personalità dell’anno. Le tavole di Zerocalcare, attraversate sempre dall’Armadillo, personificazione della coscienza dell’autore, sono un insieme di autoironia e citazioni di ogni tipo, che vanno dagli zombi a Dragon Ball, da Lady Cocca del Robin Hood “disneyano” fino ai protagonisti di Star Wars. Le sue storie non sono da considerarsi come vere e proprie cronache e non sempre i protagonisti corrispondono a persone realmente esistenti, ma evocano luoghi e sentimenti comuni, come l’incertezza di vivere in un mondo dove le diseguaglianze sociali si fanno evidenti, la lotta per i diritti è debole e la ricerca di un lavoro sempre più difficile. Per Zerocalcare l’invasione di un io ipertrofico si manifesta nelle piattaforme social e la reperibilità diventa l’ossessione del nostro millennio.

Tutti i personaggi dell’autore sono da considerarsi una proiezione dell’inconscio: le tavole rispondono a vari tipi di struttura dialogica in cui si contrappongono argomentazioni contrastanti spesso demolite da circostanze avventurose. A questa fase segue solitamente un’analisi puntuale dell’artista sugli errori commessi. La comune funzione narrativa dei personaggi è l’interpretazione della pluralità dei sentimenti che caratterizzano lo spettro umano e la nostra contemporaneità. Ad esempio Julian Ross del cartone animato Holly e Benji, rappresenta lo spirito di squadra, il filosofo francese Henri de Saint-Simon la fiducia nel progresso, Galileo Galilei il consulente scientifico, mentre Ken il Guerriero è l’esempio di massima virilità a cui aspirare.

Questi personaggi, ciascuno portatore di un valore simbolico esistenziale e proiezione interiore dell’autore, acquistano vita nei monologhi di Zerocalcare, fino a rendere possibile l’accesso del lettore alle passioni connesse all’ideale di resistenza politica, ai grandi temi dell’uomo comune di fronte alle prove della vita, alla complessità dei legami personali.

Condividendo le proprie azioni e pensieri con la comunità dei suoi lettori, Michele Rech ha incitato la collettività a riflettere sulla dimensione politica e culturale, spesso adottando punti di vista critici e aprendo a una prospettiva inedita sui temi centrali del nostro tempo. In un momento storico in cui il declino del coraggio da parte degli intellettuali è forse ciò che colpisce di più, l’arte di Michele Rech emerge come denuncia ai governi di forza e a una politica internazionale intransigente verso i Paesi più deboli.

Trasformando le sue illustrazioni in un campo di battaglia inedito, sostiene invece le comunità di minoranza che non possono reagire e ricorda eroi poco conosciuti, ignorati dalla storia ufficiale. Ciò rappresenta un coraggio che non diserta la società civile, un laboratorio di libertà civica e resistenza contro le ingiustizie sociali.

La mostra al MAXXI amplia alcuni delle principali riflessioni affrontate dall’autore ed è organizzata intorno a diversi nuclei tematici: Pop, Tribù, Lotte e Resistenze, NonReportage. L’allestimento è concepito evocando uno dei personaggi caratteristici delle storie raccontate: l’Armadillo, alter ego dell’artista e amico fedele che vive in tutti i libri. L’animale è suggerito grazie alle linee disegnate dall’allestimento che, idealmente, ripropone attraverso le sue curve la scocca del mammifero a forma di fagiolo rovesciato.

Entrando si è accolti dal murale commissionato per l’ingresso della metro di Rebibbia, che rappresenta un animale primordiale, un mammut. Come raccontato dal vecchio Ermete nel fumetto pubblicato sul blog, “il grosso proboscidato” è stato rinvenuto a Rebibbia durante la costruzione di un parcheggio, e leggenda vuole che sia poi stato nascosto agli abitanti dalle istituzioni perché invidiose che nella periferia potesse esserci un elefante preistorico.

Il corpo-scale è lo spazio dedicato alla timeline ragionata che ripercorre in maniera divertita, e mai superficiale, i momenti cruciali della sua vita. Entrando nella sala espositiva la testa sagomata, nel tavolo centrale, è il set dove sono collocate le tavole originali della Profezia dell’Armadillo. Qui sono inoltre proiettate interviste a intellettuali che raccontano Zerocalcare da un’angolazione inedita, ed è esposta una raccolta, a cura dello Zerocalcare Fan Club, che contiene una selezione di “disegnetti”, solitamente regalati agli ammiratori in sostituzione dell’autografo. L’excursus espositivo vero e proprio esordisce con un’ampia parete dedicata agli oltre sessanta poster, disegnati in un arco temporale che va dai primi anni 2000, quando il fumetto e il centro sociale s’incontrano per la prima volta nella vita dell’autore, fino a oggi. Il guscio dell’armadillo, al centro della sala, ospita invece un’ampia selezione di illustrazioni dedicate alle quattro sezioni, mentre nella superficie perimetrale, ampio spazio è destinato a tavole originali e rappresentative dei nove libri dell’autore.

Il capitolo espositivo intitolato Pop, è il primo che si incontra nel percorso di mostra, e include illustrazioni e fumetti ispirati a storie biografiche, alcune delle quali pubblicate nel blog a partire dal 2011. In questo contesto, Michele Rech affresca in modo lucido i temi che riguardano la generazione nativa negli anni Ottanta, quella generazione nata agiata che poco alla volta ha visto svanire i diritti conquistati dai padri. Giovani che crescono in pieno boom economico ma che poi, progressivamente, vedono tramontare il sogno della nazione come terra promessa. In questa prima parte, il confronto con la nuova generazione – e la desolante constatazione che tutto sia cambiato – è ironicamente restituito attraverso la presentazione di alcuni fumetti cult, Pedagogia e I giovani d’oggi, entrambi del 2012, e La Paura più grande, del 2015. La rassegna 11

prosegue con l’analisi dei demoni del nostro tempo: i social network, la reperibilità e la produttività. Chiude l’affondo sul tema una serie di tavole tratte da episodi di vita quotidiana come, tra gli altri, l’inedito Fagli più tette, del 2012, Lucine dell’albero di Natale, del 2015 o Il bracciolo poggiagomito, del 2016, nella cui familiarità narrativa non è difficile per il lettore immedesimarsi.

Il quadro, tanto realistico quanto disincantato della contemporaneità, specchio di una società in crisi permanente, è altrettanto presente in Lotte e Resistenze. Questa sezione include tutti quei fumetti trasformati dall’artista in un playground per la formazione dello spazio pubblico e della vita civica. Qui, volti di eroi locali come Renato Biagetti in La politica non c’entra niente. Verità per Renato (insieme a Erre Push), del 2007, o Gaetano Bresci in Autocensure, del 2015, sono presentati insieme a tavole da considerare come statement contro gli abusi di potere: Copsville, del 2012 e Sei pagine su tre mesi di carcere, galera, braccialetti, concorso, del 2018. Seguono vicende tratte dalla cronaca nazionale come approfondimento politico e morale sugli atteggiamenti derivanti dalla dottrina fascista, come Questa non è una partita a bocce, pubblicato su l’Espresso nel 2018. In chiusura, la disamina sui movimenti di protesta e sui diritti civili: See you on the Barricades, 2007, Ilva, 2009, Libertà di Dimora, 2015, No Border, 2018, e sugli spazi occupati.

Il Non–Reportage è il terzo nucleo della mostra. Un episodio rilevante è stato il G8 a Genova, 2001, che lo stesso autore considera uno spartiacque nella sua esistenza, motivo di ispirazione per la realizzazione del suo primo fumetto pubblicato in forma anonima su Indymedia. In mostra, una parete rossa è dedicata alla vicenda e accoglie tavole e poster come La memoria è un ingranaggio collettivo (La nostra storia alla sbarra), del 2004, Non è finita, del 2005, Genova 2001 in ogni caso nessun rimorso, del 2018.

Da qui si susseguono diversi resoconti di fatti di cronaca nazionale e internazionale, desunti da esperienze personali e di viaggio. Oltre a Gaza, nel 2006, e in Iraq, nel 2014, l’artista si è recato a Kobane, dove i curdi siriani della striscia resistono agli attacchi dell’ISIS e la cui storia di resistenza è stata pubblicata nel 2015 su Internazionale. In mostra sono dedicati al tema Ararat non si Sgombera, Groviglio (del 2016), Free Gabriele, del 2017, Afrin, del 2018. Questa sezione racchiude numerosi approfondimenti: testimonianze vissute e raccontate in prima persona con lo spirito del reportage che si trasformano nel diario intimo di un viaggiatore del nostro tempo. Di particolare interesse le tavole per Best Movie: recensioni di film presentati al concorso del Festival del Cinema di Venezia a partire dal 2016.

Infine, cuore della mostra, la sezione Tribù che attraversa tutti i temi espositivi. Una selezione di circa quaranta tavole illustrate racconta come la verità più autentica dell’autore risieda nella cultura punk, quella che egli stesso definisce la sua “tribù”, la “famiglia di appartenenza”, la “riserva indiana”. Un movimento di cui non è possibile parlare se non attraverso le copertine dei cd e dei vinili, come in Anime Corsare di Claxon e gli Ultimi, del 2014, e nelle locandine dei concerti che legano la politica radicale alla musica estrema. Questo fulcro espositivo, concepito dall’autore come un omaggio alla complessità del movimento e “a tutti quei ribelli mossi dall’impeto del cambiamento”, descrive la scena punk italiana dell’ultimo decennio.

ZEROCALCARE and courage not deserting civil society di Giulia Ferracci maxxi curator

With close ties to the undergroud scene, the example of a generation grown up with casual work and the web, with Genoa G8 and TV series, Michele Rech (1983) is one of the most relevant personalities in Italy in recent years. Born in Arezzo, of French mother tongue, the author was adopted by the Capital from the very beginning, namely the area of Rebibbia, where all the stories in his books were written, from his early self-productions (2001) all the way to Macerie Prime Sei Mesi Dopo (2018).

From fanzines to social centre posters to the columns of his blog, Zerocalcare has become a real editorial sensation in a short span of time. Starting in 2011, with the publication of La Profezia dell’Armadillo (The Armadillo Prophecy) until today with eight more books and several short stories for daily newspapers and weekly magazines, that earned him the title of personality of the year. Zerocalcare’s pages, in the recurring company of Armadillo, the personification of the author’s conscience, are a mix of self-irony and all kinds of quotes, from zombies to Dragon Ball, from Lady Kluck of Robin Hood fame to the characters in Star Wars. His stories should not be taken as real chronicles nor do his characters always match someone in existence, yet they evoke common places and shared sentiments, such as the fragility of life in a world where social inequality is all too evident, the struggle for equal rights is weakened and the quest for a job gets tougher by the day. To Zerocalcare, the invasion of overinflated egos takes place on social platforms and immediate availability becomes the obsession of our millennium.

All of the author’s characters are a projection of our subconscious: the pages follow different dialogue structures in which conflicting arguments are often shattered by adventurous circumstances. This is normally followed by the author’s in depth analysis of the mistakes made.

The narrative function that is common to all characters is a representation of the multifaceted spectrum of modern human sentiments. For example, Julian Ross, the character from the Captain Tsubasa cartoon, represents team spirit, French philosopher Henri de Saint-Simon is our faith in progress, Galileo Galilei is our scientific consultant, whilst Fist of the North Star is the maximum example of virility one can aspire to.

These characters, each with their own symbolic existential value as a projection of the author’s inner self, come to life in Zerocalcare’s monologues, making the reader share in the passions that are connected to political resistance as well as in great topics such as the common man facing life’s tribulations and the complexity of our personal relationships.

Sharing his actions and thoughts with the community of his readers, Michele Rech brought that community to reflect on our political and cultural dimension, often with a critical slant, setting an unprecedented perspective on the central themes of our time. At a time in our history when perhaps the decline of intellectual courage is at its most staggering, Michele Rech’s art emerges as a statement to governments in power and to foreign policies that are ever inflexible towards the weaker nations. Turning his drawings into an unorthodox battlefield, he in fact supports the minorities who are unable to make their voices heard and pays tribute to lesser known heroes, ignored by history thus far. This is courage not deserting civil society, a lab of civic freedom and resistance against social injustice.

MAXXI exhibition delves into the themes that are closer to the author’s heart and is organised around a number of sections: Pop, Tribe, Struggle and Resistance, Non-Reportage. The setting is devised in tribute to one of the main characters in his stories: the Armadillo, the artist’s alter ego and trusted pal featured in all his books. The animal is evoked through lines traced by the setting the curves of which, ideally, remind us of the mammal’s upside down bean-shaped body.

Once inside, we are welcomed by the mural commissioned for the entrance of Rebibbia’s subway station, representing a primordial animal this time, the mammoth. As explained by old Ermete in the blog’s comic strip, the “large trunked one” was discovered in Rebibbia during the works on a car park, and legend has it that it was later hidden from the inhabitants by the institutions, jealous of the fact that a prehistoric elephant was found in the boondocks.

The stairwell is entirely dedicated to the reasoned timeline retracing the crucial moments in his life in a light-hearted, yet never superficial way. As you enter the exhibition room, the moulded head on the central table is the set for the original pages of La Profezia dell’Armadillo. This is where you will also hear intellectuals talking of Zerocalcare from an unsual angle, whilst admiring a tome, kindly given by Zerocalcare Fan Club, containing a selection of sketches normally done for fans in lieu of an autograph. The expository journey itself starts with a large wall with the over sixty posters, made across a timeline spanning from the beginning of 2000, when comics and social centres first crossed paths in the author’s life, until today. The armadillo’s shell, at the centre of the room, is host to a vast array of illustrations dedicated to each of the four sections, whilst the area outside focuses on original pages that are symbolic of the author’s nine books.

The section called Pop is the first you come across as you walk through the exhibition and includes illustrations and comics inspired by episodes of his own life, some of which you have been reading on the blog since 2011. In this context, Michele Rech gives an extremely refined analysis of the themes around the Eighties generation, a generation that was born wealthy and that little by little saw the rights conquered by their parents vanish. Young people who grew up in the economic boom but saw their dreams of the nation as a promised land progressively shattered. In this first section, the comparison with the new generation – and the distressing reality that everything has changed – is subtly portrayed by a number of cult comics, Pedagogia e I Giovani d’Oggi (Pedagogy and The Youth of Today) both from 2012 and La Paura Più Grande (The Biggest Fear) from 2015. The exhibition continues with an analysis of the demons of our time: social networks, constant availability and productivity. To complete this particular theme are a number of pages from episodes of everyday life such as, for instance, Fagli Più Tette (Give Her Bigger Tits) from 2012, Lucine dell’albero di Natale (Tree Christmas Lights) from 2015 or Il Bracciolo Poggiagomito (The Armrest) from 2016, where it will be easy for readers to recognise themselves in the familiar narrative.

The portrait, as realistic as it is disillusioned of our times, the product of a society that entered into a permanent state of crisis, is also evident in Struggles and Resistance. This section includes all the comics the artist turned into a playground for the education of public spaces and civic life. Here can also be found the faces of local heroes like Renato Biagetti in La Politica Non C’entra Niente (It’s Got Nothing to Do with Politics). Veritaperrenato (Truthforrenato) from 2007 or Gaetano Bresci in Autocensure (Self-Censorships), are present alongside pages that are a true statement against abuse of power, such as Copsville, from 2012 and Sei pagine su tre mesi di carcere, galera, braccialetti, concorso (Six Pages on Three Months of Prison, Jail, Bracelets) from 2018. Moving on, you will find episodes from the national news as an in-depth political and moral analysis on the behaviours emerging from fascist “values”, like Questa Non è una Partita a Bocce (This Is No Game of Bowls), published on L’Espresso in 2018. Last but not least is an analysis of protest movements and civil rights: See you on the Barricades, 2007, Ilva, 2009, Libertà di Dimora (Right of Abode) 2015, No Border, 2018 and on occupied spaces.

The exhibition’s third section is called Non-Reportage. A relevant episode was Genoa’s G8 summit in 2001, deemed by the author himself as a turning point in his existence and an inspiration for his first proper comic published anonymously on Indymedia. On display is a red wall entirely dedicated to the event with pages and posters like La Memoria è un Ingranaggio Collettivo (Memory is a Collective Mechanism) from 2004, Non è Finita (It Isn’t Over) from 2005, Genova 2001 in ogni caso nessun rimorso (Genoa 2001, No Regrets Either Way), from 2018.

Here starts a string of accounts of national and international events, taken from his personal experiences and travelling diaries. As well as visiting Gaza in 2006 and Iraq later, in 2014 the author travels to Kobane, where the strip’s Kurdish Syrians are constantly fighting attacks from ISIS and whose story of resistance was published on Internazionale magazine in 2015. Dedicated to the issue are Ararat non si Sgombera (We shall Not Vacate Ararat) and Groviglio (Tangle), both from 2016, Free Gabriele from 2017 and Afrin, from 2018. This section also includes several indepth analyses: first-hand accounts of real life experiences approached with a reporter’s spirit and slowly turned into the intimate diary of a traveller of our time. Particularly interesting are also the pages for Best Movie: reviews of movies shown at the International Film Festival in Venice from 2016.

Last but by no means least and true heart of the exhibition, the Tribe section crosses all of the themes protrayed thus far. A selection of about forty illustrated pages tells us how the author’s truest self lies with the punk culture, with what he himself calls his “tribe”, his “immediate family”, his “Indian reserve”. A movement about which we cannot talk unless it is through his CD and record covers, such as Anime Corsare by Klaxon & Gli Ultimi in 2014 and through his posters for gigs connecting radical politics with extreme music. This exhibition’s cornerstone, conceived by the author as a tribute to the complexity of the movement and “to all those rebels pushed by an urge for change”, describes the Italian punk scene of the last decade.

Zerocalcare, classe 1983, appartiene a una generazione che è cresciuta imbevuta di una cultura popolare diffusa e disinvolta. A differenza della precedente, la sua generazione non ha scontato il ricatto del riflusso, del disimpegno, dell’abbandono degli ideali, ma ha potuto godere appieno e senza sensi di colpa di tutte le forme di svago che si sono riversate nel nostro Paese. Il ritorno in pompa magna dei fumetti Marvel e la grande ondata dei manga in edicola; i primi supereroi che prendono vita in maniera credibile sul grande schermo; gli effetti speciali con la computer grafica, le serie che spodestano i telefilm, gli strabilianti lungometraggi della Pixar; i cartoni animati giapponesi, senza la parsimonia e la diffidenza con cui erano stati accolti all’inizio, con il beneficio delle repliche televisive e la possibilità di farne indigestione a tutti gli orari; la seconda generazione dei videogiochi da bar, ma anche le consolle casalinghe di nuovo conio e l’ubiquità del Game Boy. Un divertimentificio diffuso, dove il benessere economico e l’ottimismo sociale incentivano la spensieratezza come stile di vita. Per questo, quando per Zerocalcare e i suoi coetanei giunge il momento della maturità, il risveglio è decisamente traumatico.

Cresciuti nel privilegio del boom economico, si ritrovano improvvisamente vittime di un sistema in crisi, sopraffatti da un’inadeguatezza e una precarietà contro le quali nessuno li ha messi in guardia. È comprensibile come questa delusione non si trasformi in odio contro gli archetipi che hanno plasmato il loro sguardo imberbe, ma piuttosto in una prepotente nostalgia verso quei tempi dove tutto era lecito e dovuto. Il successo di Zerocalcare è nato così.

Facendo leva sul quel lascito sentimentale, narrando qualcosa che non era stato ancora raccontato: la fanciullezza e l’adolescenza nell’ultimo decennio del secolo scorso. Tirandone fuori le icone e mettendole in conflitto con la spietatezza del nuovo che incombe, senza indugiare in facili condiscendenze, ma con la sfrontatezza di chi non ha nessuna intenzione di rinunciare ai privilegi acquisiti. La fortuna di Zerocalcare è stata declinare quest’intuizione in tutte le forme possibili, allargando via via la fascia generazionale di riferimento, usando lo stesso meccanismo emotivo per acquisire lettori di ogni età. Ma non è solo questo. Se la buona sorte è stata quella di vivere immerso in un liquido amniotico di intrattenimento, la sua abilità è stata quella di mutuarne il pragmatismo industriale, senza i lacci e le velleità dell’artista tormentato; la sua forza quella di recepirne, studiarne e metabolizzarne i meccanismi comunicativi, restituendoli con la stessa freschezza in tematiche del tutto inconsuete, appartenenti alla cultura underground e ai mezzi di controinformazione.

pop Zerocalcare, born in 1983, belongs to a generation that grew up steeped in a popular culture that was both widespread and mellow. Unlike the previous one, his generation did not have to pay the price for withdrawal, disengagement and loss of ideals but could enjoy all of the forms of recreation suddenly available in our country to the full and without feeling guilty. The grand return of Marvel comics and the massive wave of mangas in the newsstands; the first superheroes suddenly appearing on the big screen; computer-generated special effects, series after series on the TV, Pixar’s staggering feature films: then again Japanese cartoons, without the thriftiness and the mistrust of the first time around and with the advantage of TV reruns affording them the chance of round the clock viewing; the second-generation bar arcade games, but also the newly-introduced home consolles and the ubiquitousness of the Game Boy. A widespread fun-factory, where economic affluence and social optimism lead to a carefree lifestyle. This is why, when Zerocalcare & Co. reach maturity, the awakening is truly traumatic. Brought up during the economic boom, they suddenly find themselves trapped in a system in crisis, overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy and uncertainty to which nobody had prepared them. How this disappointment does not turn into hatred towards those archetypes that shaped their young lives, but rather into an overwhelming nostalgia for the happy times when everything was allowed, is quite easy to understand. Zerocalcare’s success began that way. Leveraging that sentimental legacy to write stories on a rather new subject: childhood and adolescence in the last decade of the last century. Bringing out its icons, in sharp contrast with the ruthlessness of the looming uncertainty, never patronizing, but rather with the audacity of someone who has no intention of giving up his acquired privileges. Zerocalcare’s fortune was that he was able to use this intuition in all its forms, gradually widening the generational scope of his readership, tugging at the emotional strings of readers of all ages. But that’s not all. If his good fortune was that he lived in some sort of “entertainment cocoon”, his ability was that he used its commercial pragmatism, without the whims of the tormented artist; his strength was that he recognised, studied and digested its methods of communication, maintaining the same candour with topics better suited to underground culture and the world of counterinformation.

Il populismo del rancore quotidiano di Loredana Lipperini Immaginate una chimera che sfugge quando si pensa di averla acchiappata.

La definizione è di quello che fu il più intelligente studioso di cultura pop, Antonio Caronia, che nel lontano 1992 definiva così la fantascienza. A onor del vero, aggiungeva che la dissoluzione aveva i suoi motivi: “Bisogna guardare ai mutamenti sociali venuti a maturazione nello straordinario decennio degli anni Ottanta: la diffusione di un’angoscia planetaria per la sovrappopolazione e il degrado dell’ambiente; l’acuirsi della forbice tra Nord e Sud del mondo e il realizzarsi di una «rivoluzione» del terzo mondo rovesciata rispetto alle previsioni dei marxisti ma non per questo meno sconvolgente, quella dell’emigrazione; il crollo del sistema del «socialismo reale» e la fine, con la crisi del comunismo, di tutte le utopie; l’intrecciarsi schizofrenico fra l’emergere di una cultura integrata su scala planetaria, che chiederebbe anche un governo sovranazionale, mondiale, dei processi, e lo scatenarsi anche sanguinoso dei particolarismi, dei localismi, dei tribalismi, con l’immancabile e triste codazzo delle xenofobie e delle infamie antisemite. In questo quadro si comprende chiaramente che è la stessa nozione di «futuro», una nozione chiave della modernità, sulla quale si basava in larghissima misura la fantascienza, a dissolversi.”

Con la nozione di futuro, Michele Rech-Zerocalcare ha parecchio a che spartire, anche se non scrive di fantascienza (di fantascienza, però, in ogni sua declinazione dai videogiochi agli

anime ai film, è fatta, anche, la sua formazione): in una delle sue storie, Gli impegni lontani nel tempo, lo dice anche, che è stato “sedotto dalla retorica del punk e dei cortei studenteschi”, salvo poi aggiungere “No Future il cazzo. Mi sono fidato quando ci hanno detto che ci avevano rubato il futuro. E invece il futuro è arrivato.” Tutto quello che Caronia analizza è lo sfondo su cui si muovono le storie di Zerocalcare, e il parallelo della chimera che fugge è perfetto: più lettori e critici credono di averlo inquadrato, più lui sfugge, come è giusto che sia. Cos’è?

Un fumettista militante? Un letterato?

Un cantore generazionale? La risposta non soffia nel vento, ma è in un’antica vignetta in polemica sacrosanta con le semplificazioni. Si intitola Il duro mondo della sintesi giornalistica, e il testo recita: “I fumetti miei so’ tipo il populismo del rancore quotidiano. Faccio sia le storie coi pischelli che tirano i serci, sia quelle di vita quotidiana più intima. (Che è poi quasi sempre un’intimità rosicona). Chiaro che se abitavo a Gaza ‘sti due filoni si sovrapponevano più spesso, graziearcazzo.

Siccome invece sto a Rebibbia, capita solo un paio di volte l’anno. Lo so che tutto questo non si può scrive in 12 battute.”

In pratica è tutto qui. Ma come avrebbe detto, ancora, Caronia, tutti i generi letterari e artistici nascono per separazione da una situazione precedente di indistinzione. L’indistinzione in questo caso si confonde con una provenienza: guarda, un autore che fa fumetti sul web.

E giù di stupore e meraviglia, come se il web fosse per sua natura un luogo alieno 24

alle narrazioni e all’arte. L’equivoco sta nel fatto che Zerocalcare ha usato il web come uno dei mezzi che aveva a disposizione: potente, certo, ma non il solo.

Prima e insieme c’erano i centri sociali, le fanzine, le riviste. E se i suoi “disegnini” venivano amati è perché riuscivano a raccontare davvero la vita quotidiana più intima e i pischelli in rivolta, l’immaginario pop comune a tutti e un quartiere comune ad alcuni. Rebibbia, appunto, col suo mammut: ma in quella stessa storia dove esordisce il mammut Zerocalcare racconta anche che Rebibbia con i suoi “alveari di polvere” venne cantata da Pasolini, e che Renato Zero riprese la poesia in un brano che non ebbe successo. Il fatto è che ci si era abituati a sentir cantare gli alveari di polvere soltanto dalle cronache, o al massimo da sguardi che a quello di Pasolini erano simili, o meglio ancora si vedevano ormai alveari di polvere ovunque, nelle periferie e nel centro. Tanto, come scrive Walter Siti nel Contagio: “I delinquenti sono sempre quelli dell’appartamento di fronte, o dei casamenti vicini.”

Della Rebibbia di Zerocalcare sappiamo che per lui è casa. Non c’è altro, se non l’appartenenza orgogliosa che non ha bisogno di altri cantori a parte coloro che la conoscono. E nel suo indistinto, che poi è la quotidianità di tanti, non c’è separazione, non può esserci classificazione di alto e basso, ci sono L’odio di Mathieu Kassovitz e Ken il Guerriero, Joffrey Lannister e Voltaire, perché le cose vanno sempre, e sempre, insieme.

La cosa giusta, o meno sbagliata – perché si sbaglia sempre, quando si racconta qualcun altro – è considerare Zerocalcare all’interno del mondo in cui si è mosso all’inizio, che è quello delle autoproduzioni, delle fanzine, che quando lui era pischello di dodici anni erano su carta (le prime ‘zine di Luther Blissett,

con la descrizione del calcio a tre porte, la Casa editrice di Vittore Baroni, AAA, il cerchio e la saetta sui muri di Pietralata, che da Rebibbia non è lontana), e che un terreno lo hanno preparato a chi ne ha annusato l’aria, ha partecipato a Crack!

Fumetti Dirompenti al Forte Prenestino e per gli altri centri sociali ha disegnato locandine. E, certo, c’è uno spartiacque, e quello non è solo generazionale, ma vale per tutti, quelli che erano ragazzi, all’epoca, quelli che erano giovani e quelli che erano già adulti: Genova, 2001. La striscia che racconta molto, A.F.A.B., e che è stata pubblicata dieci anni dopo, è quella dove il giovane Michele e i suoi amici fuggono terrorizzati per le strade della mattanza, e chiedono aiuto agli agenti della Forestale, convinti che sarebbero stati accuditi come scoiattoli. “Voi a Genova ce dovete morì”, è la risposta. Poi, le botte.

Tutto questo avviene prima del blog, che nasce nel 2011, e prima dei social.

Ma solo da un terreno dove entravano le “zecche” dei centri sociali, e la poesia e gli zombi, poteva venire qualcosa che prima non c’era, e che ovviamente poi raccoglie quel che incontra per via. I vezzi di Facebook, gli insulti, le polemiche, i necrologi collettivi (con il paradosso

reale che dopo la storia Quando muore uno famoso dove il defunto era Uan, il pupazzo di Bim Bum Bam, la società che ne gestisce i diritti ha protestato perché nella striscia si attribuiva al cagnone di essere mafioso, di essere il regista culturale della discesa in campo di Berlusconi e gli si attribuiva una storia segreta col pupazzo Four. Ah, ha protestato solo per quest’ultimo particolare).

Sì, ma il successo di Zerocalcare? Le vendite, l’affetto, le code alle fiere per i disegnetti, le classifiche, i reportage, la quasi cinquina dello Strega, il premio di libro dell’anno di Fahrenheit (che ha fatto arrabbiare alcuni letterati e alcuni fumettisti con la stessa motivazione: “Il fumetto non è letteratura”), il film, le copertine dei settimanali, la mostra (questa). Si spiega, ammesso che occorra spiegarlo, non solo perché attraverso le sue storie si ritrova quel famoso indistinto, quel mondo nostro che è stato ed è intriso di quell’immaginario pop e di quella paura, della mancanza di appartenenza (Rebibbia a parte) e del percepirsi come irrimediabilmente singoli che devono salvarsi da soli, e da soli affrontare l’incertezza, le separazioni, i lutti, le guerre degli altri, le botte che hai preso, la mancanza di futuro. Si spiega perché nelle storie di Zerocalcare c’è qualcosa che solo i buoni artisti possiedono, e i lettori avvertiti (che sono molti di più di quel che si pensa) riconoscono: l’onestà.

Ma non nel senso velenoso e distorto in cui si intende da ultimo, o in quello dispregiativo con cui si definisce un artista mediocre. In quello che diceva Umberto Saba, nel 1911, quando in uno scritto che si intitolava Quello che resta da fare ai poeti rispose: “Ai poeti resta da fare la poesia onesta.” Quella, aggiungeva, dove si esercita “La costante e rara cura di non dire una parola che non corrisponda perfettamente alla sua visione.” È questo, credo. Ed è, appunto, rarissimo.

This is how Antonio Caronia, one of our most refined experts on pop culture, defined science fiction back in 1992. Truth be told, he also added that dissolution had its reasons: “One must look at the social changes that took place during that extraordinary decade that were the Eighties: an ever-increasing worldwide concern about overpopulation and the environment’s decay; the intensifying divide between the world’s North and South and the realisation of a Third World ‘revolution’ that was the exact opposite of what the Marxists had predicted but no less devastating – the migration phenomenon; the collapse of the ‘real socialism’ system and the end of all utopias, with the crisis of Communism; the manic intertwining between the emergence of a culture that was integrated on a worldwide scale and the sometimes ferocious unleashing of localisms and tribalisms, with the inevitable and dreadful result of xenophobia and antisemitism. In this context, it becomes quite clear how it was the sheer notion of ‘future’, a key concept in modern times upon which science fiction was mostly based, that had dissolved.”

Now, he may not be a science fiction writer, but Michele Rech-Zerocalcare has always shown a keen interest in the notion of future (as well as growing up with all things sci-fi, from videogames, to anime, to movies): in one of his stories, Our Obligations in the Distant Future, he freely admits to having been “seduced by the rhetoric of punk and student protests”, and then he adds “No Future my arse. I believed what they told us, that our future had been taken away from us. Instead, the future arrived.” What Caronia focuses on is the backdrop of Zerocalcare’s stories, and the parallel with the elusive Chimera is spot on: the more readers and critics think they “got him”, the further he runs – and rightly so.

What is he? A militant cartoonist? A scholar?

The Bard of a generation? The answer is not blowing in the wind, but can be found in an old comic strip written about his constant struggle against simplifications. It’s called The Harsh World of Synthesis in Journalism and the text goes: “My comics are like the populism of daily resentment. I write stories about rockthrowing kids and stories of daily life of a more intimate nature (yet no less bitter). Of course, had I lived in Gaza these two currents would have overlapped more often, no shit Sherlock.

But I live in Rebibbia, and it happens maybe twice a year. I know you can’t write all this in just 12 lines.”

This is it, really. But as Caronia would have said, all artistic and literary genres stem from the separation of what was earlier blurred. In this case, the lack of distinction is confused with source: oh look, an author writing comics for the web. Cue the surprise and astonishment, as if the web in itself was averse to storytelling and art.

The misunderstanding lies in the fact that Zerocalcare used the web as one of the tools at his disposal: powerful, sure, but not the only one. Before and alongside it, are occupied spaces, fanzines, magazines. And if his “sketches” were so popular it’s because they really did talk of our daily slog in a most intimate way as well as those rebellious kids, the imaginary pop that is common to all set in a neighbourhood that is common to a few.

Rebibbia, of course, with its mammoth: but in that mammoth’s first story, Zerocalcare also tells us how Rebibbia with its “dusty hives” was sung by Pasolini and that Renato Zero recalled that poem in a song that had little success.

The fact of the matter is that we got used to hearing about those “dusty hives” only in the news, or perhaps from souls that were quite similar to that of Pasolini. Better still, those

dusty hives were everywhere, both in the sticks and the city centers. So much so that Walter Siti writes in his Il Contagio: “Criminals are often your neighbours, from just a few blocks away.”

What we know of Zerocalcare’s Rebibbia is that to him, it’s home. There’s nothing else, except a proud sense of belonging that needs no other bards than those who know it. And in his “blurred” indistinct, which is a lot of folks’ routine, there is no separation, there is no short or tall, there’s Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine and Fist of the North Star, there’s Joffrey Lannister and Voltaire, because things go hand in hand together, always.

The right thing, or the less wrong one – because when you describe other people, there’s no getting it right – is to place Zerocalcare in the world he first found his feet in, the world of self-publishing, fanzines, that when he was a 12-year old kid existed only on paper (Luther Blissett’s very first ‘zines, with the description of three-goal football, Vittore Baroni’s publishing house – AAA, the flash and circle on the walls of Pietralata, not far from Rebibbia) and prepared the ground for someone who wholly lived its atmosphere, taking part in Crack! Fumetti Dirompenti at the Forte Prenestino and drawing flyers for other social centers. And of course, there is a turning point, and it’s not just generational, but it works for everyone, those who were still kids, young adults and also adults at the time: that is Genova, 2001. The comic strip that says it all, which was published ten years later, has young Michele and his friends running terrified on the blood-soaked streets and asking for help from the State Forestry Corps, thinking they’d be looked after almost as if they were squirrels. “Genova is where you must die” was the answer. Then, the beating.

This happens before the blog, which starts in 2011, and before social media. But only from a place where social centers “parasites” and poetry and zombies are allowed in could something totally new originate, embracing all facets of this new way of communication.

Facebook’s whims, insults, controversy, collective obituaries: with the real paradox being that, after the story When Someone Famous Dies, in which the deceased was Uan,

the puppet from the Bim Bum Bam children’s TV show, the company managing its rights complained that the comic strip depicted the lovable dog as a Mafioso and identified him as the cultural linchpin that led to Berlusconi’s power, and hypotesized a secret love affair with Four, the other famous TV puppet. Oh, the complaint was about this latter detail alone.)

What about Zerocalcare’s success? The sales, the devotion of the fans, the long lines at comic conventions, topping the charts, the shortlist at the Premio Strega, the Book of the Year Award from Fahrenheit (which upset part of the literary and comics world with the ageold common complaint that “Comics are not literature.”), the movie, the magazine covers, the exhibition (this one). It is explained, if one really has to explain it that is, not only because in his stories one can find the aforementioned blurred indistinct, of a world that was and to a degree still is drenched in that imaginary pop and that fear, that feeling of not belonging (Rebibbia aside) and of being irreparably alone in our struggle to save ourselves from uncertainty, separation, bereavement, wars, beatings and a general lack of future. It is explained because in Zerocalcare’s stories you find something that only exists in worthy artists, which informed readers (in much larger numbers than they are given credit for) immediately recognise: devastating honesty.

But not in the venomous and distorted way in which it’s come to be definted recently, nor in the derogatory sense in which you define a mediocre artist. Rather, in the way Umberto Saba described in 1911, when in a tract called What Remains for Poets To Do, he replies: “It remains for poets to make honest poetry”.

Later adding “displaying that constant and rare care of never using a single word that does not match their vision perfectly.” That’s it, I think. And it is the rarest of gifts.
