VOLUME 17

THE DAY AFRICA BECAME HOME There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after. For me, one of those moments came in 1993. My journey began in Botswana. Beyond the airport, the Kalahari stretched toward the horizon — vast, ancient and impossibly wild. When I stepped from the aircraft, the heat rose through the soles of my boots. The air shimmered above the earth, carrying the scent of sun-baked soil, dry grass and dust. I remember standing there and feeling something I still struggle to explain. For the first time in my life, I felt completely at home. Not because it was familiar, but because somewhere deep inside, I knew I belonged. During the days that followed, one question kept returning: How do I come back? And I did. Again and again. Over the decades since, Africa became my greatest teacher. It taught me patience, humility and the extraordinary value of paying attention. It shaped my paintings, my friendships, my conservation work and, ultimately, the way I wanted to share this continent with others. What began as a journey became a calling. Wildscapes Travel grew from the desire to share it — not simply to show people wildlife, but to help them experience the deeper connection that wild places can create. To slow down. To be present. To understand why these landscapes matter. Because when people truly experience wild places, they begin to care about them. And when people care, they protect them. Africa became the source of my art. And, in many ways, it became home. Enjoy the journey,

About THE ARTIST. JOHN BANOVICH is known internationally for his large, dramatic portrayals of iconic wildlife. His life-sized elephant painting ‘Once Upon a Time’ drew global attention to ivory poaching and his deep knowledge of wildlife and unwavering commitment to conservation continue to raise awareness about imperiled species. Under the umbrella of his Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, money generated through artwork sales has been channeled back into efforts that promote habitat protection, sciencebased wildlife management and sustainable tourism. Wildscapes Travel grew from Banovich’s relationship with Africa that spans more than three decades. Long before there was a travel company, John was journeying across the continent – spending time in remote wilderness areas and forming enduring friendships with guides, conservationists, researchers, camp owners, pilots, community leaders and wildlife authorities. Those relationships remain at the heart of Wildscapes Travel today, allowing him to introduce you not simply to extraordinary places, but to the people who know them intimately.

GIANTS OF AFRICA

A Life Among Elephants THERE ARE MOMENTS IN AFRICA THAT ALTER THE WAY YOU SEE THE WORLD FOREVER. For John Banovich, one of those moments came on his very first safari in 1993. Long before more than three decades of fieldwork, thousands of hours spent observing wildlife and over 1,500 paintings, there was simply the anticipation of seeing an elephant in the wild for the first time. When that moment finally arrived, it was unlike anything he had imagined. “It was as though a house had come alive.” No photograph, documentary or collection could have prepared him for the scale, presence and quiet authority of Africa’s largest land mammal. Standing before a wild elephant is not simply a sighting. It is an encounter, one of those rare experiences that leave you both humbled and profoundly aware of your own place in the natural world. More than three decades later, that sense of wonder has never diminished. Elephants remain one of the subjects John returns to again and again. Their immense physical presence is matched by the complexity of their lives: the tenderness between a mother and her calf, the quiet confidence of an old bull, the intricate bonds within a family and the knowledge passed from one generation to the next. The more time he spends with elephants, the more they reveal — and the more he realizes there is still to learn. It is this endless curiosity that has inspired Giants of Africa, John’s newest body of work and forthcoming publication. Following Beast and King of Beasts, it represents the next chapter in an artistic journey that has unfolded across more than three decades in the field. John often jokes that when he leaves this planet, somewhere in his studio there will be an unfinished lion painting and an unfinished elephant painting. Neither story will ever feel complete. Both continue to teach him something every time he returns to Africa. That is the spirit behind Giants of Africa. 4

JOHN BANOVICH FINE ART

More than a collection of paintings, the book is an invitation into the world of elephants as John has experienced it – through thousands of hours spent watching, sketching, studying and simply being in their presence. Every canvas begins long before the brush touches the surface. For John, understanding always comes before painting. It means watching how elephants move through a landscape, how they interact, how a matriarch leads her family, how a bull carries his enormous weight almost silently, how light moves across skin and how an animal’s character reveals itself slowly to those willing to wait. “I don’t think of myself as painting an elephant,” John explains. “I imagine I’m a tiny beetle walking across a vast landscape of hills, valleys, light and shadow. I’m exploring the elephant rather than simply painting it.” It is a philosophy born from observation. John’s work has always been grounded in experience. He returns to Africa not simply to gather reference material, but to understand more deeply the animals, people and ecosystems that inspire his art. His paintings are informed by conversations with scientists and conservationists, countless hours in the bush and extraordinary encounters that can never be recreated in a studio.

ONE OF THOSE ENCOUNTERS UNFOLDED QUIETLY AT A REMOTE WATERHOLE IN NORTHERN BOTSWANA. Standing waist-deep in the water beside renowned guide Mike Penman, John found himself surrounded by bull elephants. Then a breeding herd approached. Mothers, calves and young elephants moved gently around them until, eventually, fifty-three elephants shared the same waterhole. For almost half an hour, the usual separation between observer and observed seemed to disappear. No urgency. No fear. Only presence. “It felt,” John recalls, “as though the distance between the human world and the animal world had disappeared.” These are the moments that find their way onto canvas. Some of the stories within Giants of Africa begin in landscapes familiar to generations of travelers: beneath Mount Kilimanjaro among the great tuskers of Amboseli; alongside the breeding herds of Botswana’s Okavango Delta; beneath the ancient trees of Mana Pools; along the river systems of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi; and within the great private reserves of southern Africa. Others begin far from any audience – quiet encounters witnessed only by those patient enough to wait. Together, they reveal elephants not simply as magnificent animals, but as individuals living within extraordinarily complex families and landscapes. Elephants are also vital architects of those landscapes. They open pathways through forests, disperse seeds, create access to water and influence the ecosystems through which they move. Protecting them therefore means protecting something far greater than a single species. It means protecting the space, ecological processes and interconnected systems upon which countless other species depend. For John, this understanding has made conservation inseparable from the art. The animals that have given him a lifetime of inspiration are also animals whose future cannot be taken for granted. Through the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, that sense of responsibility has translated into support for conservation initiatives that protect wildlife, landscapes and the people who share their lives with them. Because ultimately, observation leads to understanding. Understanding creates connection. And connection gives us a reason to care. THIS CHRISTMAS, GIANTS OF AFRICA INVITES US INTO THAT WORLD: A WORLD THAT HAS INSPIRED JOHN’S ART, SHAPED HIS LIFE AND CONTINUES TO HUMBLE HIM EVERY TIME HE HAS THE PRIVILEGE OF STANDING IN THE PRESENCE OF THESE GIANTS. About WILDSCAPES TRAVEL. WILDSCAPES enables the extraordinary by fostering immersive experiences in travel and art, and profound personal connections with diverse cultures and individuals across the globe. Whether you seek a one-of-a-kind travel adventure that transforms your perspective on our planet or art that reflects the beauty and power of the natural world and inspires you within your own space, Wildscapes is committed to making the lives and environments of our clients as extraordinary as the world around us. The Art of the Journey No two journeys should ever be the same. You start with a blank canvas, design a composition, then fill in all the intricacies, adding layers and washes and details until finally you step back and it’s a whole picture – one our clients will hang in a special place in their hearts, forever. We treat the planning process with John’s characteristic attention to each exquisite detail, believing that the end result should build up to a crescendo, and finish nothing short of a masterpiece. Wildscapes grew from a relationship with Africa that spans more than three decades. Long before there was a travel company, John was journeying across the continent – spending time in remote wilderness areas and forming enduring friendships with guides, conservationists, researchers, camp owners, pilots, community leaders and wildlife authorities. Those relationships remain at the heart of Wildscapes today. They allow us to introduce you not simply to extraordinary places, but to the people who know them intimately. Travel, Designed Around You We believe the finest journeys begin with listening. Rather than asking where we can send you, we begin by asking what you want to feel, see, understand and experience. Perhaps this will be your first glimpse of Africa. Perhaps you want your children to experience elephants in the wild while they are still young enough to look at them with absolute wonder. You may dream of sitting quietly among mountain gorillas in Rwanda, following the Great Migration across the Serengeti, drifting through the waterways of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, walking through the wild landscapes of Zimbabwe, photographing a leopard in the golden light of the Sabi Sand, or simply disconnecting from the noise of everyday life somewhere profoundly beautiful. Whatever draws you to Africa, your journey begins there. We design every Wildscapes itinerary from the ground up around you – your interests, passions, pace, priorities and budget. There is no standard Wildscapes safari. There is only your safari. 6

Art. Travel. Conservation.

AT THE HEART OF WILDSCAPES IS OUR BELIEF THAT TRAVEL SHOULD LEAVE SOMETHING MEANINGFUL BEHIND. For John Banovich, art, travel and conservation have always been inseparable. The landscapes and wildlife that have inspired his work for more than three decades are the same landscapes and species we have a responsibility to help protect. Through the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, every Wildscapes journey contributes to meaningful conservation initiatives across Africa – supporting wildlife protection, scientific research, community partnerships and projects working to ensure these extraordinary wild places endure. Your journey can also bring you closer to this work. Where appropriate, we can introduce you to conservationists, researchers and community leaders whose lives are dedicated to protecting Africa's wildlife and wilderness, giving you the opportunity to understand not only what you are seeing, but what it takes to protect it. Travel then becomes something more than observation. It becomes participation. YOUR AFRICA. This year, we share some of the landscapes, lodges, wildlife experiences and extraordinary people that continue to draw us back to Africa year after year. Think of them as possibilities rather than prescriptions. Your journey might take you from the vineyards and coastlines of Cape Town to the wildlife-rich private reserves of the Greater Kruger. You might follow ancient elephant routes through Botswana and Zimbabwe, the migration herds across East Africa, or mountain paths into the forests of Rwanda and Uganda. Your journey may be adventurous or restorative. Celebratory or transformative. It may be your first trip to Africa – or the latest chapter in a lifelong relationship with the continent. Because ultimately, the most extraordinary experience is not the one everyone else is taking. It is the one that feels as though it could only ever have been created for you. WELCOME TO WILDSCAPES TRAVEL. LET’S CREATE YOUR NEXT JOURNEY TOGETHER.

Quality OVER QUANTITY. AFRICA REWARDS THOSE WHO GIVE IT TIME. We believe the finest safari is rarely the one that visits the greatest number of places. It is the one that gives you the time and space to experience each place deeply. For this reason, we believe in quality rather than quantity. Selecting destinations according to the wildlife experience, season, guiding, location and exclusivity, we favor private conservancies and remote wilderness areas where guest numbers are limited and your wildlife encounters can unfold naturally, intimately and without crowds. Here, your safari can extend far beyond the traditional game drive. You might leave camp on foot with an expert guide at first light, follow tracks through the bush, spend an afternoon with conservation researchers, visit a community project, photograph wildlife from a hide, head out after dark in search of nocturnal species, or simply sit beneath an ancient tree and listen to Africa. National parks and protected reserves remain the great anchors of conservation across the continent and form an important part of many of the journeys we create. When we recommend staying within them, we choose your location carefully – considering wildlife movements, lodge density, seasonality and, above all, the quality of your experience. It is not simply where you stay. It is where we position you within the landscape. INDEPENDENCE BY DESIGN. A romantic journey for two should feel entirely different from a multi-generational family safari. If you are a photographer, you may need something different from what someone experiencing Africa for the first time needs. You may want access to researchers and conservation projects in the field. You may want adventure and immersion. Or you may simply want extraordinary wildlife, beautiful surroundings and uninterrupted time to reconnect with the people you love. Our role is to understand the difference and then create the journey around you. THE PEOPLE WHO BRING AFRICA TO LIFE. A remarkable guide can change the way you see the world. We believe exceptional guiding is one of the most important elements of your safari, which is why we choose the people who accompany our guests with extraordinary care. If you are looking for an even deeper experience, a Wildscapes Private Guide can accompany you throughout your journey. Traveling with you from one destination to the next, your guide comes to understand your interests, your family's dynamics and the way you like to travel. The logistics become almost invisible. What remains is the experience. SEAMLESS FROM BEGINNING TO END. Behind your Wildscapes journey is an enormous amount of planning. We coordinate your accommodation, internal flights and private charters, transfers, private vehicles, specialist guides, conservation experiences, family logistics and the countless details required to move seamlessly through Africa. Our trusted travel partners can also assist with international flights, insurance and the broader arrangements surrounding your journey. Our intention is simple: By the time you arrive, you should no longer have to think about the logistics. You should simply be able to experience Africa.

Following THE GIANTS. NINE EXTRAORDINARY LANDSCAPES FOR EXPERIENCING AFRICA'S GREATEST ELEPHANTS. There are few wildlife encounters that compare with standing in the presence of a wild African elephant. But no two encounters are quite the same. For John Banovich, these are more than extraordinary places to see elephants. They are living landscapes that have shaped his understanding of the species – places he has returned to over decades to observe, study, photograph and paint them. For travelers who share that fascination, these are some of the places we believe offer the most remarkable opportunities to follow the giants.

AMBOSELI, KENYA Beneath Kilimanjaro

CHOBE, BOTSWANA Where Elephants Meet the River

IMIRE, ZIMBABWE Among the Elephants

Few images of Africa are more iconic than an elephant crossing the plains beneath Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is renowned for its large, well-studied elephant population and some of the continent's remaining great tuskers. Generations of elephants have been observed here for decades, making it an extraordinary place to witness family relationships and behavior.

Chobe is synonymous with elephants. Vast numbers are drawn to the Chobe River, particularly during the dry season, creating wonderful opportunities to observe them drinking, bathing, playing and crossing the water. Experiencing elephants from a boat offers an entirely different perspective – quiet, intimate and often extraordinarily close.

Just outside Harare, Imire offers an intimate connection with Zimbabwe's elephants within a landscape dedicated to wildlife conservation. Here, elephants roam among open savanna, woodlands and granite outcrops, offering opportunities to observe these intelligent, social giants and experience the deep connection between wildlife, landscape and conservation.

TARANGIRE, TANZANIA The Land of Giants

OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA Giants of the Delta

HWANGE, ZIMBABWE Elephant Country

Ancient baobabs and elephants define Tarangire. During the dry season, large herds gather along the Tarangire River, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. It is one of East Africa's great elephant landscapes, yet often feels quieter and less hurried than the betterknown safari areas farther north.

Here, elephants inhabit a world shaped by water. They move between islands, wade through reed-lined channels and swim across deeper waterways. The combination of elephant herds, pristine wilderness and the ability to explore by vehicle, boat or mokoro makes the Okavango unlike anywhere else.

Zimbabwe's largest national park is one of Africa's great elephant strongholds. During the dry months, enormous numbers gather around natural and pumped waterholes, creating extraordinary opportunities to watch the social dynamics of multiple herds around a single source of water.

SAVUTI & LINYANTI, BOTSWANA Along Ancient Elephant Routes

LOWER ZAMBEZI, ZAMBIA Life Along the River

MANA POOLS, ZIMBABWE Where Giants Stand Tall

Northern Botswana is crossed by generations-old elephant pathways connecting water, woodland and seasonal feeding grounds. Linyanti's rivers and floodplains attract remarkable concentrations of elephants, while Savuti offers a wilder, more dramatic landscape with lions, wild dogs and other predators.

Along the Zambezi, elephants are part of the rhythm of the river. They emerge from woodland to drink, wander between camps, feed on islands and swim across channels separating Zambia from Zimbabwe's Mana Pools. By canoe or boat, you experience their world from an entirely different perspective.

There is something almost prehistoric about Mana Pools. Beneath towering winterthorn trees, some of its famous bull elephants have learned to rise onto their hind legs to reach nutritious pods overhead. Add the freedom to experience this landscape on foot with an exceptional guide, and Mana becomes one of Africa's most intimate elephant experiences.

Where WILL AFRICA TAKE YOU? ONE CONTINENT. INFINITE WAYS TO EXPERIENCE IT. Africa is not one destination. It is a continent of extraordinary contrasts – floodplains and forests, deserts and deltas, mountains and great rivers, open savannas and ancient migration routes. Each landscape has its own rhythm, its own wildlife and its own reason for being part of a journey. Where you go matters. But when you go, where you stay and how you experience a place matter just as much. At Wildscapes, we don't begin with a list of countries. We begin with you. Then we select the landscapes, seasons, camps and experiences that will create the journey you want to have.

THE BANOVICH WILDSCAPES FOUNDATION

Making a Difference FOR WILDLIFE.

FOUNDED IN 2007 BY JOHN BANOVICH, the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation is the culmination of tireless conservation efforts over the past two decades. Through his career as an artist, Banovich has inspired a deeper understanding of the world and its wildlife, encouraging successful conservation efforts and awareness of endangered species and their habitats. Traveling across the world seeking inspiration for his work, John has used his travels to research wildlife and to learn about associated conservation challenges at the local, regional, and national levels in the United States, throughout Africa, including Rwanda, Namibia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, as well as India, Indonesia and Russia. Our Conservation Impact At the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, our mission is to create a future where wildlife and people thrive together. Across Africa and North America, we support boots-on-the-ground conservation initiatives that prioritize endangered species, rural communities, and the ecosystems that connect them. We believe lasting conservation begins with strong, resilient communities. By supporting alternative livelihoods and reducing dependence on agriculture, livestock, and bushmeat poaching, we help create opportunities for people and wildlife to thrive together. Our ongoing efforts include providing essential educational and medical supplies to schools and clinics across East Africa, supporting clean-water initiatives in Rwanda and Kenya, and helping construct protective livestock bomas in Kenya and Tanzania to reduce human-wildlife conflict. The survival of Africa’s iconic predators depends on understanding their movements, behaviors, and challenges.

THE IMVELO TRUST - COMMUNITY RHINO CONSERVATION & COBRAS C.W.P.U. At the heart of the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation lies a profound commitment to wildlife conservation, with a focus on protecting some of the world's most endangered species. The Community Rhino Conservation Initiative is an innovative program aimed at protecting rhino populations and their habitats through community-driven efforts. Recognizing the urgent need to address the escalating threats of poaching and habitat loss, the initiative brings together strategic partners and philanthropic supporters. Through these collaborations, BWF has helped fund anti-poaching patrols, support habitat restoration and relocation projects, and empower local communities. By investing in education, training, and sustainable livelihoods, we are not only protecting rhinos but also empowering communities to thrive alongside these magnificent creatures. By rallying support from fellow conservationists, art enthusiasts, and concerned citizens alike, John Banovich is striving for a future where communities thrive in harmony with nature. WATER4WILDLIFE TRUST Imvelo manages nearly a quarter of the waterholes that sustain Hwange’s wildlife—a massive commitment of which we are truly proud! Hwange National Park is one of the few great parks of Africa without any major rivers or lakes. Due to this, animals, including large herds of elephants, congregate in enormous numbers around the waterholes, particularly during the dry season. Imvelo operates 18 pumps in and around Hwange National Park which provide essential water for wildlife throughout the year. During the dry season, from May to November, Imvelo increases its pumping program with solar hybrid pumps that allow for pumping to continue throughout the night. This is a mammoth logistical operation, with pump attendants stationed in remote places needing regular delivery of rations, supplies, and diesel, while repairs and maintenance are continuous. CHEM CHEM ASSOCIATION - TARANGIRE-MANYARA ECOSYSTEM The Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, in partnership with the Chem Chem Association, supports vital conservation efforts within Tanzania’s Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem and the Kwakuchinja Wildlife Corridor. Through GPS collaring, lion research and monitoring, the project helps protect lions while providing communities with early warning of potential conflict. BWF also supports predator-resistant bomas that protect livestock and reduce retaliatory killing. As climate change places increasing pressure on this landscape, efforts have expanded to address critical water scarcity, including borehole development and the restoration of diminishing Lake Burunge, an essential water source for wildlife and surrounding communities. Together, these initiatives protect wildlife, strengthen local livelihoods and help preserve one of Northern Tanzania’s most important wildlife corridors for generations to come.

GRUMETI FUND: HELPING TO PRESERVE THE SERENGETI ECOSYSTEM FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS The Grumeti Fund's conservation initiatives strengthen both wildlife protection and the communities that share the landscape with Africa’s most threatened species. Funding has helped equip specialized anti-poaching teams operating within critical rhino habitat, while also advancing community education and livelihood programs. Additional support for rhino re-establishment efforts is helping secure a more sustainable future for the critically endangered eastern black rhino—demonstrating how conservation investment can protect wildlife and support local communities. ACCF & TUSK ORGANIZATIONS TUSK LION TRAIL Over $1 million was raised for community and conservation projects across Africa through the Tusk Lion Trail, a global art installation launched by ACCF and Tusk on World Lion Day. Twelve life-sized lion sculptures created by leading artists were displayed in iconic locations around the world, celebrating lions while raising awareness and support for their conservation. “Thank you to everyone for their support, with special thanks to Rhonda Vetere for sponsoring my KING OF BEASTS sculpture and to Donna Karan for her long-standing support of the people and wildlife of Africa.” – John Banovich ACE AWARDS The Banovich Wildscapes Foundation presented the Award for Conservation Excellence (ACE) with its presenting partner and host, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE). The award, sponsored by Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Cabela Family Foundation and Bass Pro Shops, was created to recognize leading conservationists who have made extraordinary contributions to the sustainability of nature and wildlife. MOUNT ETJO RHINO TRUST, NAMIBIA For five decades, at the 36,000-hectare Okonjati Game Reserve, the Mount Etjo Rhino Trust has worked to secure a future for one of Africa’s most iconic species. Through vigilant anti-poaching protection and the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned calves, the Trust provides a vital refuge for black and white rhinos — giving those impacted by poaching a second chance in the wild.

The Siberian Tiger Project

WHEN THE WORLD STEPPED AWAY, WE STEPPED IN. A LEGACY WORTH PROTECTING As the geopolitical landscape changed, however, the ability of international organizations to continue supporting conservation work in Russia became increasingly complex. Faced with the possibility that this important work and decades of accumulated knowledge could be interrupted, the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation made the decision to step forward and assume stewardship of the Siberian Tiger Project by supporting the local Russian NGO Far East Fauna, which carries on the institutional knowledge and personnel of the Project.

JOHN BANOVICH, THE AMBUSH, 2026, 30 H X 70 W, OIL ON BELGIAN LINEN

NEW RELEASE THE AMBUSH, 2026, OIL ON BELGIAN LINEN Gallery Edition - 17" x 40": 75 s/n plus 7 Artist Proofs • Limited Edition: $1,250 • Artist Proof: $1,500 Studio Edition - 28" x 66": 75 s/n plus 7 Artist Proofs • Limited Edition: $3,250 • Artist Proof: $3,850

WHY THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST CAT DEPENDS ON ALL OF US There are moments in conservation when history quietly changes direction. Not because another species disappears overnight or headlines announce a dramatic rescue mission. More often, the most important moments happen almost unnoticed - when decades of scientific knowledge, hard-earned field experience and irreplaceable conservation work suddenly face an uncertain future. This is one of those moments. For decades, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) helped build the Siberian Tiger Project into the world's most important long-term research and conservation project for the Amur, or Siberian, tiger. Its scientists and field teams created an extraordinary legacy of scientific and conservation knowledge in the Russian Far East.

www.johnbanovich.com | 1.888.486.3160

Today, BWF is committed to carrying this remarkable legacy forward — preserving the scientific knowledge developed over decades, supporting the experienced people working on the ground, and ensuring that critical research and conservation efforts for the Siberian tiger, and the natural landscapes it depends on, continue. We are deeply grateful to WCS and the many scientists, conservationists and supporters whose work created the foundation upon which the project stands today. Our role is not to replace that legacy, but to protect it, build upon it and help carry it into the future. Because conservation cannot always choose the circumstances in which it must operate. Sometimes, when the path becomes most difficult, simply ensuring that the work continues becomes one of the most important acts of conservation.

“‘Bahati Ya Kawinda’ is Swahili for ‘lucky hunting.’ This piece features a family of lions on a fresh warthog kill. Even though this is small prey for two adults and three cubs, it probably was an important hunting lesson for the cubs that before long will be capable of capturing prey on their own. And as with most kills in East Africa, it does not take long for scavengers to show up hoping to steal a tidbit for themselves.”

“There is an old African proverb that says, ‛An elephant never tires of carrying its tusks.’ I say whoever coined it never met the elephant that carried the world-record tusk, which weighed more than 220 pounds. People have been fascinated by ivory, this ‛white gold,’ for centuries. It was used in everything from billiard balls and piano keys to other displays of exotic wealth, until the international ivory trade was banned by CITES in 1989.”

“There is no greater bond in the big cat world than between pride males. Male lions often start out their lives as littermates, and these two brothers will grow up together and leave the family pride together. If they successfully conquer all of the threats facing a lion in the wild, they will finally arrive at the day when they rule over a territory and have a pride of their own.

Like all brothers, they will fight over the small stuff, but reconcile their differences fairly quickly. One day, as new heirs defending their own pride, they will face an enormous amount of challenges, but because of their deep connection, they will go to war for each other, defining what the word ‘partners’ truly means.”

“The idea for the paintings, ‘The Defensive Line’ (SOLD OUT) and ‘The Offensive Line,’ originated in the titles, and having played football, I remember the feeling of lining up against a lineman that outweighed me by 75 pounds. African buffalo seemed to be the best candidate for that role, given their bad attitude and helmet-shaped horns. On safari in 1994, I came across a pride of lions and a herd of buffalo engaged in such a test of wills. Positioned 30 yards apart, they began to size each other up for what would be the world’s greatest confrontation.”

“Palindaba is a Swahili word meaning a place of great gathering. This scene took place in Ngorongoro Crater at Lake Magadi, where many times during the year the soda lake attracts thousands of flamingos and the fresh water inlet attracts big herds of wildebeest, zebra, and sometimes hippos, making it a popular drinking area. The kaleidoscope of white and pink flamingos made for a perfect backdrop for the interaction of dark wildebeests and the striped torsos of zebras.”

“‘Mosi oa Tunya’ is a work I completed from my study of the mighty Victoria Falls — ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ where I was given permission from the Chief Warden to walk the edge of the entire falls (5,781 feet) on the Zimbabwe side. This intimate view was my favorite one and it gave me a whole new level of understanding of the magnificence of this Wonder of the Natural World.”

“‛Amba,’ as he is known to the Udege people of far eastern Russia. Strong, silent and deadly, the Siberian Tiger or Amur tiger is perfectly adapted to the land where the jungles of Asia meet the boreal forests of the north. Although larger prey like sika deer and wild boar make up the main source of this big cat's diet, like all cats it seems to have a magnetic draw to anything that moves, making a good old-fashioned game of 'Cat and Mouse' irresistible.”

“On a recent trip to northern British Columbia, Canada, near the border of the Yukon, a close friend had a successful morning hunting moose. We had seen sign of bear on this trip but fortunately they kept their distance that morning. I often visualized what it might look like if the only winner here had been the grizzly. In any grizzly encounter the terms are always dictated by the bear!” www.johnbanovich.com | 1.888.486.3160

“Known to be very good mothers, female polar bears typically produce two to three cubs, but rarely does more than one survive its first year. This mother has been lucky enough to rear three into their second year and by now has taught them most things they will need to know to survive in such an extreme environment. Her vigilance knows no limits when protecting her young and she can even drive away a large male that outweighs her by nearly a third.” www.johnbanovich.com | 1.888.486.3160

“During the breeding season, the dominant bull actively maintains his harem of mature cows from the advances of opportunistic rival bulls. His large stature and relentless instincts to protect ensure the strength of his lineage for many bountiful years to come. This painting is one of my Bison in the Snow series and it unveils what it would feel like to stand off against the ‘Master of The Herd.’”

John Tolmay BRONZE SCULPTURES Born in Southern Rhodesia in 1943, John Tolmay grew up immersed in the African bush, where an early fascination with wildlife and nature inspired him to begin drawing his observations. After agricultural college in South Africa, he traveled to Europe and the United States, working as a cowboy in Nebraska and New Mexico before returning to Rhodesia in 1966 to ranch. Tolmay began guiding African hunting safaris in 1974, an experience that gave him an intimate understanding of wildlife, movement, and anatomy — knowledge that would later become fundamental to his work as a sculptor. He completed and sold his first bronze in 1989 and has since devoted himself to capturing the animals and experiences of a lifetime spent in the wild.

Banovich SKETCHES "There is something pure, truthful and immediate in the simple lines of a sketch. I have been sketching in the field for many years, and nothing trains one’s eye to truly see and understand a subject better than drawing from life. I use my sketches and studies for future works. Some may manifest into finished paintings and others remain in their original status, suspended in time, as an illustration. A rare few are brought to the light to be shared and enjoyed in their simple splendor.”

Introducing GIANTS OF AFRICA A LIFE AMONG ELEPHANTS

BY JO H N BA N OV ICH FO R E WO R D BY PAU L TU DO R JO N E S PR E FACE BY PETE R F E A R N H E A D PRO LOGU E BY JA M E S L . B E LLI S J R . TE X T BY DAVI D CA B E L A Following his best-selling and award-winning books BEAST and KING OF BEASTS, John Banovich returns with GIANTS OF AFRICA – A Life Among Elephants, a magnificent celebration of one of the most extraordinary animals on Earth. Featuring 208 large-format pages, this beautifully produced volume showcases more than 215 of Banovich's dramatic paintings and sketches, all dedicated to capturing the power, intelligence, character and majesty of Africa's great giants. Banovich's fascination with elephants continues to grow after 70 visits to Africa, where he has studied these remarkable animals, occasionally in surprisingly up-close encounters. Those experiences have given him a deep appreciation for the elephant, not simply as the world's largest land animal, but as an intelligent, social and deeply compelling creature with an unmistakable presence. In his remarkably realistic paintings, Banovich conveys the many faces of the African elephant, from massive, solitary bulls to closely bonded family herds led by experienced matriarchs. His images capture moments of strength, tenderness, curiosity and confrontation, offering an intimate glimpse into the lives of animals that have inspired legends, commanded worldwide respect and captivated generations. GIANTS OF AFRICA is more than a collection of wildlife art. It is a spectacular tribute to an extraordinary animal and an invitation to better understand the ancient giants that still roam Africa today.
