As I write this I am on my way back home from my second conservation trip to Africa this year; a long journey to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, southern Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through my countless travels to Africa I have always been keenly attuned to the prevalent issues plaguing the great continent. On this journey however it has become starkly apparent that many places in Africa are in real trouble. They are at the end of the game. Despite the herculean efforts launched by many people, governments and organizations we are failing to halt the receding line of habitat and to provide sustainable places for wildlife and communities to thrive. We must find a way to come together, despite our differences, in an effort to elicit real change. I believe that our power as conservationists, hunters, wildlife photographers, artists, hiking and outdoor recreational enthusiasts is only as great as our ability to unify our efforts.

On this trip I came across two freshly poached rhino carcasses. There is no way to describe the flood of emotions when you are staring into the cavernous carnage that is discharged with such a disregard for life. I have created many rhino paintings over the years but standing in the crime scene, littered with two slaughtered carcasses frozen in angst, one can only weep at this profound, senseless loss of life. This madness must stop and in order to reverse this slaughter we all must become engaged. It is not for someone else to do it, it is up to all of us.

We must act now to preserve Africa and its extraordinary biodiversity. In the face of every epic of tragedy emerge true heroes; men and women working tirelessly to claw back against the loss of habitat and loss of life, both human and animal alike. Each small victory contributes to the greater mission and each hero must be recognized and supported. Over the next few years I am going to bring you the stories of the people and places that are making a difference with wildlife, habitat and community development. We are working to strengthen these partnerships to assemble the full support needed to help empower real change. In the end we must secure a true protected home for wildlife to thrive. Wildlife doesn’t need to be saved, it only needs a safe place to live and they will save themselves. Please join me on this journey.

About the Artist JOHN BANOVICH EMERGED AS A TALENT TO WATCH over two decades ago and today is known internationally for his large, dramatic portrayals of iconic wildlife. His lifesized elephant painting “Once Upon A Time” drew global attention to ivory poaching and his deep knowledge of wildlife and unwavering commitment to conservation continues to raise awareness about imperiled species.

Under the umbrella of his Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, money generated through artwork sales has been channeled back into support efforts that promote habitat protection, science-based wildlife management and sustainable tourism.

Nicolas was born and raised in France, but has lived in Tanzania since 1995. His natural passion for wildlife, extensive knowledge of the African bush and fluent Swahili has made him one of the region’s most sought after guides.

This passion, combined with his deep knowledge and understanding the bush and its wildlife, means that Chem Chem’s guests experience the truly sensual safari.

Situated within a privileged Wildlife Management Area between Northern Tanzania’s Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks, lies 20 000 ha (55 000 acres) of raw, untainted African bush – the Chem Chem (means Little Spring in Masia Language of Maa) Wildlife Concession.

Created by Fabia Bausch and Nicolas Negre, this private concession is the embodiment of their deep passion and commitment to the African wilderness.

Fabia grew up and lived in Switzerland. Her early career included 12 years immersed in the financial corporate world, where she exceeded the expectations of her colleagues and seniors alike, turning often stressful situations into invigorating opportunities. This time was crucial to Fabia’s growth as it taught her to appreciate what was truly important to her: time, privacy and freedom. Having travelled the world, lived in the Tanzanian bush for fifteen years and tackled the corporate financial jungle, Fabia and Nicolas have each taken a unique path towards a shared vision: to create a sanctuary in their beloved African wilderness. “We wanted to fulfil our dream of creating a place that not only protects a valuable migration route but

also allows you to slow down – to take the time to immerse yourself in precious moments,” says Fabia, “somewhere where you can pause and smell, hear and discover the rhythm of Africa.” Chem Chem Wildlife Concession is the realisation of that calling – a place where time, beauty and pleasure know no boundaries. Introducing Riccardo Tosi Born in Milan Italy, Riccardo Tosi had the opportunity to experience Africa from a very early age. Childhood was spent following his father, conservationist Professor Guido Tosi, as he traveled throughout Africa admiring the wonders of it's wildlife. Africa remained in his blood and mind even as he traveled and worked throughout Asia.

Through protection, research, implementation, development and education, P.R.I.D.E is dedicated to conserving lions by supporting important scientific research to conserve large conservation landscapes and benefitting rural community developments. Banovich Wildlife Foundation has supported lion research and antipoaching efforts for over a decade.

Banovich Wildscapes Foundation supports humanitarian services at Soysambu Conservancy in Kenya. Providing essential medicines, medical supplies, school equipment, efficient cooking methods and clean water to over 6,000 people in the region.

P.R.I.D.E. LAIKIPIA PREDATOR PROJECT

KENYA WILDLIFE TRUST – MARA CHEETAH PROJECT

Supporting this important scientific study to better understand the influencing trends in populations of large carnivores in the human and livestock dominated landscape of the Laikipia ecosystem.

P.R.I.D.E. CHEM CHEM LION PROJECT

Through the first time use of GPS collars in the Mara Ecosystem, we are supporting the gathering of important scientific information and data to understand the influencing trends on the East African cheetah population.

CRAIGHEAD INSTITUTE

The purchase of GPS collars enabling anti-poaching initiatives to track the movement of lions between the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks. These collars will allow for a better understanding of the effectiveness of environmental corridors in the Manyara region of Tanzania.

The Craighead Institute is an applied science and research organization with a long history of designing and managing innovative research projects in support of conservation in the Northern Rockies and around the world. Banovich Wildscapes Foundation supports the Craighead Institute’s mission to maintain healthy populations of native plants, wildlife and people as part of sustainable, functioning ecosystems.

P.R.I.D.E. KENYA WILDLIFE TRUST – MARA LION PROJECT

CARE FOR WILD RHINO SANCTUARY

The KWT has recently formed the Predator Hub and the Mara Lion Project in order to establish lion numbers across this ecosystem in addition to identifying and mitigating the threats facing the population.

KHUNTA MI INITIATIVE – SAVING THE AMUR TIGER Working in partnership with WCS to incentivize local communities to co-exist with Amur Tigers. Additionally providing post-graduate support for young Russian scientists.

LWIRO PRIMATES CRPL takes care of 72 chimpanzees and 92 monkeys of 11 different species, together with parrots, turtles, hyrax and porcupine. All these animals have been victims of poaching and the illegal pet trade. The existence of the CRPL makes confiscation, a vital resource to law enforcement possible.

Baby rhinos that are orphaned in the wild rarely survive.

The mission of Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary is to rescue every rhino that is orphaned, to heal them and to provide a totally secure environment where they can grow, roam free, and breed to ensure that there will always be rhinos in Africa.

MOUNTAIN GORILLA VETERINARY PROJECT Focused on the hands-on medical care for the critical species of sick and injured mountain gorillas residing in the National Parks of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

UBUMWE COMMUNITY CENTER The Ubumwe Community Center in Gisenyi, Rwanda is a place where people with disabilities can learn skills that allow them to build a sustainable life. The Banovich Wildscapes Foundation donates shoes, art supplies, ESL books and medical equipment to assist in the enrichment of the programs.

RICCARDO TOSI PHOTOGRAPHY Riccardo Tosi

Born in Milan Italy, Riccardo Tosi had the opportunity to experience Africa from a very early age. Childhood was spent following his father, conservationist Professor Guido Tosi, as he traveled throughout Africa admiring the wonders of it’s wildlife. Africa remained in his blood and mind even as he traveled and worked throughout Asia. Eventually destiny brought him back to Africa, which he now calls his home. After working in the hunting and security industry, Tosi found his passion for wildlife photography. He now runs the anti poaching and conservation operations of a private concession in Tanzania and is constantly working to preserve and protect African wildlife through his art.
