PICTURE COMPETITION

The ‘banana man’ wins the 2023 title HE winner of our 2023 ‘Derbyshire’s Wonderful Flora & Fauna’ competition is Glyn Ashley, of Lawrence Road, North Wingfield, with his picture of bananas growing on the tree in his back garden this summer.

He said at the time: “Five years ago, I transplanted my banana tree into the garden.

Imagine my delight when last August it rewarded me with a flower and bananas.”

The tree has also won Glyn a a meal for two at a top local restaurant and the chance to have more of his pictures featured in Reflections in 2024.

In second place was Alastair Newton, with his picture of two emu chicks at Matlock Farm Park. Now we know that emus are not native to the county – but these two are clearly Derbyshire residents now!

There was a three-way tie for third place: Dave Miller, of Chesterfield, with his picture of swans ‘posing’ at Holmebrook Country Park; Janice Dyson, of Wingerworth, with her image of cute cygnets; and Lorraine Baker, of Matlock, with her photo of a sheep looking at the view from Derwent Edge.

Our 2024 competition details…

OUR 2024 readers’ photographic competition has a simple theme: it’s ‘Lovely Landscapes’. Derbyshire is such a beautiful county, and there are so many lovely landscapes in it – and we want you to capture them.

The picture(s) you send must be taken in 2024 and must be in Derbyshire; and you can enter as many times as you like.

We want entries from amateur snappers and not commercial photographers; and drone images will not be accepted.

Classic cars sell for £1.5 million!

H&H CLASSICS has successfully sold almost 100 classic and performance cars, worth some £1.5 million at its final physical auction of 2023.

Jaguar, a brand synonymous with British motoring heritage, featured prominently in the sale which took place at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton.

The highlight of the day was the 1954 Jaguar XK120 Coupe, previously owned

by Patsy Burt, Britain’s renowned female racing driver, which fetched £113,850.

And a 1964 Jaguar E-Type 4.2litre Coupe, that had been converted from left- to right-hand drive and fitted with a replacement engine, changed hands for £100,500.

A new ‘community forest’ for Derbyshire DERBYSHIRE’S Heartwood Community Forest has set down roots with the first tree being planted late last year as part of the Government-funded initiative to improve access to nature by providing more green space in areas of the county with fewer woodlands.

Coun Carolyn Renwick, of Derbyshire County Council, planted an oak tree on the council’s countryside site on former colliery land in Glapwell, to mark the start of the forest’s creation along the eastern and southern fringes of the county.

It’s one of two new Community Forests – the other being created in Tees Valley – to join the existing network of 13 England’s Community Forests.

England’s Community Forests are located in and around large towns and cities, providing regeneration, championing green infrastructure and creating high-quality environments for millions of people.

Derbyshire’s Heartwood Community Forest will occupy a central position between the National Forest to the south and the Greenwood Community Forest in Nottinghamshire, to join up these two woodland areas.

Trees will be planted on pockets of available land stretching over a geographic area of approximately 289 square miles within communities along the eastern border of the county and areas in the south of the county including: • Amber Valley: Alfreton, Somercotes, Heanor, Ripley, Codnor.

• North East Derbyshire: Clay Cross, Dronfield, Eckington and Killamarsh, Sutton, Wingerworth, Shirland.

• Bolsover: Barlborough, Clowne, Bolsover, Shirebrook, Pleasley, South Normanton, Pinxton, Tibshelf, Glapwell.

• Chesterfield: Birdholme, Boythorpe, Brampton, Brimington, Chesterfield, Loundsley Green, Newbold, Staveley, Whittington.

• Erewash: Breadsall, West Hallam, Horsley, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Sandiacre.

• South Derbyshire: Etwall and Repton, Hilton, Melbourne.

• Derby.

The project aims to plant

300,000 trees on publicly accessible land

by March 2025, supporting the county council’s ambition to help facilitate the planting of a million trees by 2030.

Coun Renwick said: “Derbyshire is wellknown for being home to the rolling hills of the Peak District, but our county is also characterised by communities in former coalfields and industrial heartlands.

“Heartwood Community Forest will bring together these urban areas, where more than three-quarters of the county’s population of 797,000 people live, helping to provide more green space for residents, boosting biodiversity, improving air quality and access to nature.

“The next stage is to link up with local landowners to look at where we can start planting and encourage groups and individuals to get involved in creating woodland havens in their communities.” £50,000 has been awarded, as part of the Government’s Nature for Climate programme, to fund initial development work for the new Community Forest.

An amazing 1,000-mile Jen Lowthrop and her rescue dog Cookie walked 1,000 miles last year through all England’s national parks to raise money for the Peak District National Park Foundation. Here is her story…

It meant my fourth park, the Lake District, I completed alone. The September heatwave continued as I hiked up the Lake’s peaks. England’s highest hostel – Skiddaw House –was a shining beacon on a sweltering day and I lapped up its honesty bar treats and lay on the cool flagstone floor for a much needed rest.

My third day in the Lakes I was up early to hike up England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike.

This was my third time reaching the top, but felt like my biggest high of the trip, physically 17 Reflections January 2024

FEATURE and mentally. I had made it across the large boulders and steep scree path and found my way through clouds to reach the top and was treated to panoramic views as the clouds briefly parted. I’m not sure I would have found my way without the app Komoot. I was heavily reliant on my pre-planned routes on Komoot, following my little blue dot, counting down the miles left to each day’s finish line.

The fifth park, The Broads, was a little different being mainly water, so alongside walking from north to south, my partner Olly and I did two days by canoe. This was a well-deserved rest for my feet and a chance to see the Park as it should be, from the water.

Day one in the South Downs saw us scaling the Seven Sisters, and the flat Broads soon felt like a distant memory. I followed the South Downs Way from Eastbourne to Winchester, walking almost 120 miles over 7 days. It was tough and I was thankful for another flat Park, the New Forest, after a couple of days rest by the coast.

I love how unique each national park is. They have many similar challenges, but each has their own individuality, none more so than the New Forest. Over 6,000 roaming wild ponies, alongside deer, donkeys and even pigs give it the feel of an open safari park.

Credit @jlowthrop I was again spoiled with an unseasonably sunny October in Dartmoor. I was warned of changeable weather in Dartmoor and the miles of seemingly stark moorland that can quickly disorient you when the fog descends. It wasn’t until my final day hiking up High Willhays, that we found the fog and drizzle I’d expected.

The weather brightened again for day one in Exmoor, our penultimate Park. We walked along the coast from Berrynarbor to Minehead over three days before turning inland to head up the highest peak, Dunkery Beacon, where the weather changed to steal all visibility from the summit. I watched Park Ranger Charlotte, who had joined me for the morning, disappear into the fog as Cookie and I continued on the final stretch.

As I was making my departure from Exmoor, Storm Babet was arriving, bringing with it train chaos, flooded roads, and ruined paths.

After delaying my start of the Peak District by a day due to the floods, we started on the northern edge of the park in Marsden and headed along the Pennine Way towards Snake Pass. I was thankful I had my partner Olly with me as we ended a long day of hiking in the dark walking across Bleaklow.

I was in my home park and I wanted to make the most of it, so I wiggled my way to the south over nine days. Heading up Kinder Scout on day two and down into Edale, before a wet and muddy day up Win Hill and down the Long Causeway into Hathersage. Thank you to The Bike and Boot Hotel and Maynard Hotel who provided accommodation along the way!

across Erewood Reservoir and the Goyt Valley. I had wanted to explore new parts of the Peak District I didn’t know well and loved the variety the Peak District brings.

From the vast moorlands in the north, to the magnificent craggy gritstone rocks of the Roaches, and limestone valleys in the south.

I also got to see some of the work the Peak District Foundation has funded along the way. I saw the work to slow down water on the moorlands through gully blocking and creating dam reserves, the improved accessible pathways and heard more about the work of volunteers across the park.

As the sun set, I arrived at Callow Hall, near Ashbourne, our finish line. My feet were hardened from the miles they had stomped, but my heart was full of love: for our National Parks, for the people and projects I met along the way and the hope that everyone gets to experience the incredible benefits a walk in the parks brings.

I have had so much support along the way for this hike, a solo adventure is rarely a solo endeavour and I want to thank my family, sponsors and all the National Park teams who have supported us.

We have so far raised over £10,000 for the Peak District National Park Foundation and thanks to Alpkit’s match funding, another £10,000 for projects in each of the national parks I visited.

The funds from the hike are going towards access projects to disadvantaged groups across the Peak District, including growing our ‘Connect Fund’ which makes small community grants to remove barriers to under-served communities accessing the park. Some of the funds will also go to improving a popular path

COUNTYWIDE NEWS Flash fiction, poetry and short stories relevant to the five to twelve age group can be submitted to The Paul Cave Prize for Children’s Literature, which closes on February 28, 2024. Top prize is £75 and all winners will receive a copy of The Paul Cave Prize for Children’s Literature 2024.

“The children’s book market is incredibly difficult to get into and unless you’re a celebrity or established in this field. It’s nigh on impossible to get your work published,” says Tim Saunders, who will be judging the prize with his wife, Caroline, and children Henry (7), Heidi (10) and Harriett (12). “So this is a great opportunity for budding children’s authors.”

Seven ‘Oscars’ so far for salon!

Sell-out concert in aid of Wirksworth Music Centre IN November, the ever-popular Wam Bam Band had a sell-out crowd at Wirksworth Town Hall dancing and singing the night away. There couldn’t be better advocates for getting involved in live music!

The evening was a fund-raising concert for Wirksworth Music Centre (WMC), which offers opportunities for local, school-age children to come together to make music in various ensembles and choirs. As a registered charity, the centre is dependent on grants, donations and student subscriptions. As a result of student numbers falling during the pandemic and being slow to recover, the WMC trustees are actively seeking alternative sources of funds.

Thanks to marvellous community support, the concert raised over £2,500!

The Wam Bam Band generously waived their usual fee as several band members have children who have enjoyed belonging to the Music Centre in the past. The bar, run by volunteers, donated their significant profits to the total raised.

The local businesses who provided raffle prizes were: Otto Café; Carly Hair; Mitchell’s Artisan Butchery; Webster’s Café in the Wirksworth Heritage Centre; Le Mistral restaurant; and donations of whisky from Friends of the WMC. Sallyanne Swindell, owner of Marsden’s Gifts of Wirksworth, kindly handled ticket sales.

Ranald Macdonald, a trustee of WMC, organised the concert with an excellent team of helpers and said: “It was so rewarding to see the local community coming together, generously supporting our young people.

Johnny Rowlatt, lead singer of the band, said: “We are all passionate about getting young people involved in music and WMC does a wonderful job doing this.”

The band was formed in 1998 as a soul band, with 15 members (now about 12 regulars), all from the Wirksworth area.

A £400K grant to ‘Feed Derbyshire’ DERBYSHIRE County Council has approved funding of nearly £400,000 to Rural Action Derbyshire to enable them to carry on supporting affordable food projects across the county.

Rural Action Derbyshire coordinates the Feeding Derbyshire Network, which has run since 2015 and offers help to people struggling with low incomes, debt and poor access to affordable, nutritious food.

As part of this, the Affordable Food Network was set up in 2020. This aims to provide a longer term, more sustainable alternative to food banks with the creation of community pantries.

These differ from food banks as people pay a small yearly membership fee and also pay a small contribution toward the cost of the food they choose during their weekly visit to the shop.

The community pantry model has been piloted over the last two years and so far three pantries have opened in community venues and on the high street using empty properties. Another eight are currently in development.

Children’s literature competition ENTRIES to an exciting children’s literature competition are invited from Derbyshire residents.

A MATLOCK salon has won SEVEN hairdressing ‘Oscars’ in the last two years!

Aspire Creative won the Best New Salon title in the 2021 Salon Awards; then took four awards in 2022 – Best Salon Team, Best Colour Salon, Best Customer Experience and a Stylist of the Year award for Jamie Hadleigh.

The salon, which only opened in December 2020, moved from Matlock Green to Bank Road, Matlock, earlier in 2023 – and its new base proved a double winner in the 2023 Salon Awards late last year, taking the Best New/Refurbished Salon and Derbyshire’s Best Salon awards.

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive these two incredible awards. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and passion of our entire team,” said creative director Jamie.

The move to Bank Road, Matlock, in March 2023 allowed Aspire Creative to offer a full range of beauty treatments, and providing three sunbeds, as well as continuing to operate as a salon.

Salon manager Ashley said: “We are immensely grateful to our loyal clients whose support continues to inspire us to raise the bar in providing exceptional salon experiences.”

PEAKLAND: the perfect place to be in winter!

IS SEPARATION YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION? WHAT’S YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION?

D

O more exercise; drink less alcohol; get more sleep; join a club. Or is it to sort out your relationship? If your relationship is faltering, is the new year a good time to look forward and consider your future?

Is it time to start considering what a separation may look like? Could a trial separation work? Maybe some breathing space could bring a new perspective on how your relationship could work. Or is it time to make the decision to permanently separate?

Whatever the reason or permanency, when a relationship comes to an end, it’s difficult to know what to do next. You’ve probably spent a considerable period of your life with the person you are separating from, and you will be entering unchartered territory.

Here, Bradie Pell, partner and head of Graysons’ family team offers tips and practical steps (rather than legal advice) that could help during the early days of your separation.

1. The date of your separation will be one of the first questions various agencies and solicitors will ask. Try to make a note of it,

and of the date when you both agreed the relationship was over, even if you physically remained in the same house after that date.

2. Think about how you will address your separation with any children. If it is safe to do so, try to discuss interim care arrangements. It’s important that children don’t think they have to choose between you – they need to know they have a right to spend time with both of you, so try to make arrangements for that. Agreeing things between you is by far the best way, but if you can’t, take early legal advice to avoid exposing the children to conflict.

3. Think about the practicalities. There will be several things to consider, such as children, pets, the house, home contents, income sharing, payment of bills, use of bank accounts and so on. Make a list of issues that need to be resolved and address each aspect individually. Discuss this together if you can, but if not, try to agree a channel of communication; email, for example, or a parenting app such as MyFamilyWizard (several parenting apps are available, and

Bradie Pell, partner and head of Graysons’ family team. they can be really useful). The aim is to try to agree a “holding position”, such as how the mortgage or rent will be paid or who is going to stay in the same house until matters are resolved and long-term arrangements made.

These initial interim arrangements may not be your ideal solution but should help until you obtain some legal advice and decide what you would like to happen long term.

For this reason, it is best to take legal advice before, or very shortly after, separation.

4. Consider mediation. In the right circumstances, it can be a useful forum to avoid disputes, and you can self-refer.

A mediator will guide you through the options and help you to discuss matters that are in dispute, such as finances or children issues. Any agreement reached in mediation can usually be put into a legally binding document by a solicitor.

A mediator cannot give you legal advice, but you can obtain independent legal advice alongside your mediation.

5. It is important to take legal advice early if you can. Many solicitors offer an initial free consultation in which you can give an overview of your position and be guided as to what your next steps should be. This is an ideal opportunity to find out what your costs will be, how these can be paid, what aspects of your separation you can undertake yourself and where you will need a solicitor. Any urgent steps needed can also be discussed at this meeting. BP

Travels with a ten-year-old Planes, trains and automobiles!

Dawn Anderson shares her experiences of a big trip with a small person!

A

S the usual arctic temperatures of January set in, your mind may be wandering towards the summer, the promise of sunshine and being able to leave the house without feeling like you have been swaddled.

I usually long for the brighter weather, but am hopeless at planning holidays until the last minute, despite being ruled by the school breaks for the last 18 years!

Having two children ten years apart has its advantages – but that isn’t one of them.

But 2023 was different… a plan began to form in February and the essential elements, like flights, were booked by March!

You might be wondering what galvanised me last year? Well, I was working on a contract that ended in July and was hoping to have time off in August. My son Laurie, then aged 10, spends half his time with me and half with his dad but I wanted to make the most of the time off and go away for a couple of weeks. I had no idea where and anyone who has children of that age will know that holidaying anywhere at that time is eye-wateringly expensive.

I wanted something affordable, but fun. I am not known for being adventurous in my choice of holiday, usually preferring a package holiday (easier for a busy mum to arrange) but I had some time to think about it.

My main consideration was this: what would a ten-year old and a fifty-something both enjoy? The idea of a different kind of trip began to form. I started to think of other destinations and to ask myself a) was my son old enough to come with me and b) would he enjoy it?

The other major consideration was whether such a trip would be wise as I would be the only parent and indeed, the only adult. I played through every scenario in my mind, thinking of the worst that could happen, and would the limitations outweigh the positives? In the end I just thought, “Life is short. What am I waiting for!”

The United States immediately came to mind, I’ve visited before but my son hasn’t. New York seemed the obvious choice; you can fly from Manchester easily and, much to my surprise, affordably.

Whilst there I also wanted to ‘pop up’ to Toronto in Canada. I knew it was close (well, only an hour’s flight from New York) and I had a friend there who I had been promising to visit for ten years.

Whilst doing my research, I realised that internal flights in North America were relatively inexpensive (it was cheaper to fly from Toronto to Los Angeles than buy a rail ticket from Chesterfield to London) and then the options really opened up.

Car hire was the next thing I debated; it was cheap (less than £30 a day) and fuel is almost half the price there, but would I dare to drive? Whilst being a confident driver over here, I had never driven on the opposite side of the road! I breathed deeply and booked the car, reassuring To advertise call 01246 550488

My son and I did watch loads of YouTube videos prior to going, which was really helpful. I later learned that a ten-year old makes an excellent navigator and a really good observer, noting the stuff that adults often miss.

So, on the first of August 2023, we set off on our trip…

New York, New York…

and my plans for a leisurely coffee each morning in the room were abandoned when I requested one and all they could produce was a filter coffee machine. It also felt strangely ageing to be called ‘Ma’am’.

We saw Back to the Future on Broadway (it was epic!) and visited the M&M’s shop (well, I was with a ten-year old). We walked through Central Park eating ice-creams in the sunshine and Laurie spotted the hotel from Home Alone (our favourite film). A walking tour with one of the First Responders around the area of the Twin Towers was really enjoyable for me – and the massive bagel that Laurie had whilst walking was satisfying for him.

Canada… Toronto and Niagara Falls

Less than one hour’s flight and we were in Toronto, home of Loonies and Toonies (the local coinage we discovered, much to our amusement!) Again, a nice warm climate and a relief to be called ‘Miss’ again.

The highlight of Toronto was the CM tower where we ate a delicious meal whilst revolving over the Toronto skyline; I think we both loved that. Another highlight of Canada was Niagara Falls… simply breathtaking. Niagara Falls itself is a curious mix of fantastic water feature and blingy amusements…

It was here that Laurie first said: “If I do anything silly, just remember I am only ten.

And a boy.” The picture (top) says it all!

Los Angeles…

A five-hour flight and we were at LA collecting the car. My nervousness about driving was unfounded and with Laurie acting as an extra pair of eyes for navigation and signage, I soon began to feel confident driving on the right. America is definitely the home of the Tesla and the pick-up truck, as these were the most common vehicles we saw. Los Angeles was the warmest place that we visited, we actually needed the air-conditioning. The highlight here was the Warner Brothers studios!

Los Angeles to San Francisco… The Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz

The drive up the Pacific Coast Highway provided some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable. The aquarium at Monterey used in the film Finding Nemo was amazing (somewhere I wouldn’t have gone to if I didn’t have a ten-year old with me). We saw a lot of San Francisco via a Hop on Hop Off bus, including seeing the Golden Gate bridge in the fog (apparently quite common). Alcatraz was an adventure and an education at the same time!

It was a lovely day in Los Angeles when Dawn and Laurie went to see the famous Hollywood sign.

Back home…

After 16 days, we arrived back in the UK, tired, but full of memories, too many to fit into this article. We had lots of laughs and no tears. We ate junk food unashamedly, but balanced it with visits to the Farmers’ Market. We sampled five different airlines (all of 34 Reflections January 2024

which had different baggage restrictions and prices), eight hotels (including three motels), two train lines (we could really take some tips from Canada about how to run railways!), the subway (air conditioned!), the local bus and several Ubers (this has been my only experience of travelling in a Tesla).

My son was the perfect companion, big enough to help carry things, clever enough to help navigate, young enough to get reduced fairs or even free admission at times – and old enough to laugh at the same things as me.

He did and said lots of silly things (well, he was only ten and a boy), but they made it a holiday that neither of us will forget.

If you are contemplating a trip right now, I hope that this will give you some insight into a different kind of trip that was rich with experience but didn’t break the bank and gave us memories that will last a lifetime.

FANCY THAT THERE are 26,000 miles of drystone walls in the Peak District – more than a wall around the Earth following the equator, which measures just 24,901 miles.

Derbyshire is full of drystone walls – but the oldest in Britain is in Skara Brae in Orkney, thought to be about 3,500 years old.

Incredibly rare Derbyshiremade car returns home AN incredibly rare piece of Derbyshire’s car-making history has made a return to the county.

Better known for the manufacture of Rolls-Royces and Toyotas, few people know that in the 1950s, Derbyshire was also home to the production of the now almost forgotten Paramount car.

And now, the fifth Paramount car ever made has gone on display at Great British Car Journey after being discovered at a classic car auction.

Richard Usher, founder and director of Great British Car Journey, explained: “We consider ourselves experts in British classic cars but even the Paramount was a mystery to the team here. We had no idea this car even existed. It wasn’t until we were alerted to its local history that we knew we had to have it and bring it home. The Paramount really is a forgotten piece of Derbyshire’s motoring heritage.”

Only 10 Paramount cars were manufactured at the factory in Swadlincote and all of them bore the registration PNU, and were numbered 1 – 10.

“We’d love to trace another of the Swadlincote Paramounts, but we think it’s highly unlikely any will be in existence which makes ours even more special,” said Richard.

Just 16 Paramounts were produced in Derbyshire; first at the Swadlincote factory and then later in Melbourne, until production moved to Buckinghamshire in 1953. In total, just 76 Paramount cars were made until 1956 when production ceased.

“Our brilliant team at Great British Car Journey have already got the car running and looking a lot smarter than when she arrived,” he added.

sports car of exceptional beauty whilst retaining the distinctive British character.’

The Paramount boasts Triumph running gear underneath its allaluminium bodywork which is stretched over a wooden ash frame mounted on a tubular metal chassis.

The Paramount now joins Great British Car Journey’s only other Derbyshire made car in the interactive exhibition – a Rolls-Royce once owned

by Scouts founder Lord Baden Powell.

CHESTERFIELD Royal Hospital is encouraging patients to ask questions about when they might be able to get back to their own bed.

Getting patients home as soon as they are clinically ready to leave can be better for their recovery, so in partnership with Joined Up Care Derbyshire (JUCD), the hospital wants patients and their families to know ‘It’s OK to Ask’ about when they might be ready to go home.

Michelle Veitch, chief operating officer at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We want patients to be involved in their own care and to help them feel in control. We know that people don’t want to be in hospital any longer than they need to be, so it is important to us to support

them in getting home quickly and safely.

“Patients are not able to do the same level of activity and exercise they normally do at home, and we know that there are huge benefits to them being in their own environment and surrounded by the people and things they care about.”

The new Discharge campaign follows a text message format between a patient and their loved ones on subjects like: getting you home to your comfy slippers, or nothing better than a home-cooked roast. It is aimed at patients and their families, encouraging them to support the discharge of their loved ones once they are clinically ready to go home.

“We’re always here for those who need us, but we also actively encourage people to ensure they are thinking about plans for their discharge. This could mean ensuring that friends and family are able to support them a little more when they can return home and any adaptations are made to ensure that any additional needs are catered for.”

This campaign will run alongside other ‘It’s OK to Ask’ campaigns – covering infection prevention and control subjects, such as hand washing and uniform guidance.

Although the campaign is focused on visitors and patients’ loved ones, patients can also help by following some easy steps: • setting an expected date for when they’ll be able to leave the hospital; • planning for transport home; • discussing any aids and adaptations they might need with their care teams; and • ensuring the hospital’s checklist for discharge has been completed, including the need for any prescription medicines being picked up.

LESS than 12 months after completion, Chesterfield’s flagship office block, One Waterside Place, has 100 per cent occupancy.

The developer of the £340million Chesterfield Waterside scheme, Bolsterstone Group PLC, has now turned its attention to the delivery of the hotel, residential and multi-storey car park elements surrounding the office block.

Peter Swallow, Managing Director of Bolsterstone Group PLC, said: “One Waterside Place has been a huge success for both Bolsterstone and Chesterfield Borough Council; it has been instrumental in setting new headline rents for office space in the town.

CHESTERFIELD Borough Council is having built 22 new council properties, located at various sites across Staveley and Middlecroft.

Construction is now underway after local councillors joined representatives from Fortem Solutions Limited, the main contractor, to break ground on one of the sites and kick-start the project.

The project will see the addition of two, three-bed bungalows on Ringwood Avenue and two, two-bed bungalows at Court Place; four, two-bed bungalows on Wensley Way; two, two-bedroom houses on Paisley Close; nine, three-bedroom houses on Westwood; and three, threebedroom houses at Aston Court.

These new homes are set to benefit from renewable energy sources. Each property will be fitted with an air source heat pump for the heating and hot water, while solar panels will be installed on the roof, with battery storage, to generate electricity.

A RECORD number of species have been spotted in the county, the Derbyshire Biological Records Centre (DRBC) reports.

Hosted by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, DRBC works closely with local natural history groups and individuals to collate and combine data on species, with around 25,000 records received each year.

A staggering 2,416,982 species are now recorded in the county. The data is accessible to scientists, researchers and both local and national decision-makers to support their conservation efforts.

County ‘worst place for potholes’ DERBYSHIRE is the worst place in the country for potholes, according to RAC figures released recently. They reveal the county has the highest number of potholes at 90,596.

The AA reported that potholes account for 460,000 callouts in the first nine months of 2023, which was a fifth more than 2022.

Derbyshire County Council is said to be making ‘big investments’ to bolster the conditions of roads. The council states that it fixed 100,000 potholes in 2022, and last year had fixed 82,000 by mid-November.

EW YEAR, NEW YOU? It’s a familiar feeling as a new year dawns and plans abound to be healthier and happier in the months ahead.

It’s a time for reflection and resolution – not least for those running their own business. Now, female business owners are being offered a helping hand through a new retreat – Recharge and Rise – designed for women seeking ‘respite, connection and growth’.

It is organised by the Loop Collective, a community of women supporting each other in growing their small businesses and creative projects.

Michelle says: “The business retreat has been curated as an investment in professional and personal wellbeing, with thought-provoking workshops led by inspiring women and a chance to make meaningful connections with like-minded individuals.

“The day will be the perfect opportunity to nourish ourselves, enjoy good company and good food.”

Recharge and Rise is on Friday, March 15 and will be hosted in the tranquil setting of Lorentes restaurant, Darley Abbey, renowned for its tapas cuisine.

Michelle adds: “It will feel like a sanctuary at the end of a busy week. We are inviting women to come along and enjoy an amazing opportunity to discover more about themselves, feel that they have learned something that will support them in their business and be part of a community dedicated to supporting each other on the journey to success.”

Helen and Michelle launched the Loop Collective after realising that other women, like themselves, may be looking for an alternative to traditional business networking.

“There was a sense of ‘we need this’.

Informal Loop networking sessions are generally held every other month, with a guest speaker or speakers, covering relevant subjects which have so far ranged from business strategies to social media marketing, career change to creative pursuits, menopause and chronic fatigue.

There are occasional in-person catch ups in-between and regular dialogues via Instagram and WhatsApp. It’s a nurturing, supportive space where members feel comfortable to share and to seek advice on any aspect of their lives, from business success and challenges to family matters and everyday practicalities.

Helen says: “Loop is a wonderful community where everyone can be open and ‘themselves’. In our businesses, Michelle and I both help women to open up and feel comfortable and Loop operates in a similar way. It’s grown organically.”

Michelle adds: “We want to create a community to inspire women and cheer each other on. There’s space for everyone – we’re not in competition with each other.”

Michelle and Helen met as mums through

HELEN Rowan (pictured right) set up her photography business in 2016 after a 17-year career in fashion design.

She studied Fashion Design at University of Westminster and Central St Martins, going on to design for Burberry and Aquascutum in London. She later designed prints for high street brands including M&S and Next in Manchester.

“Once I had a family, the extensive travel, pressure and long hours were no longer making me happy,” says Helen. “I discovered that I had a huge passion for photography and developed my skill while my children were small, practising at every opportunity and gaining qualifications and awards from the Guild of Photographers.

“I started by taking photos of families in my community, then began working with some business owners.

I now work full time, with 50 per cent of my business in newborn/family photography and 50 per cent working with businesses, predominantly women, from across the Midlands.

“Because of my background in the luxury fashion industry, delivering the highest quality is central to everything I do. I want the whole experience to be the very best, for everyone that I work with. I really want to show personality and stories within clients’ images and, for that to happen, everyone needs to be relaxed and happy.

“Since working with women in business, I’ve seen a phenomenal change in myself too. It has really made me assess what I need in my own life to be fulfilled. To successfully promote what I do, I need to be present in images for my own website and social media. I can honestly say that the more you see professional photos of yourself, the easier it becomes. I’m 45 years old, and I feel happy and confident with images of myself for the first time ever.”

FEATURE their children’s school in Chesterfield. They became friends after Helen took branding photographs for Michelle’s therapy practice – and the ideas for Loop developed from there.

“When I had my photos taken, I was incredibly nervous,” recalls Michelle. “But Helen was so easy to work with. She really put me at ease.

“I already admired her work and her ethos of photographing women, which fitted well with my own approach for my therapy practice.”

Discussing the ‘busyness’ of their

lives, they quickly realised that other women would also be experiencing the daily juggle of running their own businesses and other life tasks.

Leeder runs leadership courses for women MICHELLE Leeder previously worked in charity and non-profit organisations, supporting young people – often those at risk or living in social deprivation.

She lived in London and Essex before moving to Derbyshire to be nearer to family and, once settled here, she decided to retrain as a counsellor and therapist.

survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse during my training, I realised I felt drawn to working with women and decided to set up a private practice to work with exclusively with them,” she says.

Michelle works with faceto-face clients in Chesterfield and online across the UK. She also runs an embodied leadership course for women,

with podcaster and coach Mel Wiggins – focusing on developing deeper levels of self-awareness.

“It’s a privilege to be selfemployed in a profession that is so fulfilling,” she adds. “I feel that I’ve been able to carve a life for myself as I’d imagined it. I love that I can run my own diary, manage my time – and be present for my kids.”

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

A RECIPE FOR VEGANUARY This month, we are offering a vegan meal, writes the omnivore known as Barrie Farnsworth.

V

EGANUARY (January) has inspired and supported millions of people to try vegan since 2014 – with participants from almost every country in the world.

One common motivation for shunning steak and stilton and going vegan is the promised health benefits. The vegan diet is generally considered to be higher in fibre and lower in cholesterol, protein, calcium and salt than an omnivorous diet – but there are still misconceptions and concerns around cutting meat, fish, eggs and dairy completely from our diets.

One common concern is whether a vegan diet provides enough vitamin B12, which helps prevent nerve damage, and is found in meat, fish, eggs and dairy, but not in fruit or vegetables. It’s

recommended that adults consume 1.5 micrograms of the vitamin per day.

A recent study involving 48,000 adults compared the health of meat-eaters, pescatarians – who eat fish and dairy but not meat – and vegetarians, including some vegans. They found that people who eat vegan and vegetarian diets have a lower risk of heart disease, but a higher risk of stroke, possibly partly due to a lack of B12. Obviously, vegans can take B12 supplements.

But watch out for vegan junk food, some experts say, which can be as unhealthy as meat-based junk food.

The NHS says this is a ‘healthy vegan diet’: Eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day;

Base meals on potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or other starchy carbohydrates ( choose wholegrain where possible); Have some fortified dairy alternatives, such as soya drinks and yogurts; Eat some beans, pulses and other proteins; Eat nuts and seeds rich

in Omega-3 fatty acids (such as walnuts) every day; Have fortified foods or supplements containing nutrients that are more difficult to get through a vegan diet, including vitamin D, vitamin B12, iodine, selenium, calcium and iron; and Drink plenty of fluids (6-8 cups or glasses) every day.

SHAMAMBERT TOFU QUICHE This vegan dish from honestlytasty.co.uk needs no eggs to make a light, fluffy quiche topped with a lovely crust.

It’s perfect served with a green salad. Shamembert is a vegan cheese styled on Camembert (hence the name!).

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

For the pastry:

Make the pastry

325g wholegrain spelt flour half-tbsp nutritional yeast 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 100ml olive oil

For the filling

400g Silken tofu 3 tbsp nutritional wheat flakes quarter-tsp ground turmeric half-tsp onion granules 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 tsp cornflour 125ml oat milk 3 tbsp chilli relish half Honestly Tasty Shamembert

SERVES

First, preheat the oven to 200c. In a large bowl, mix the flour, mustard and nutritional yeast with a generous pinch of salt. Add the olive oil and stir continuously until it is evenly dispersed throughout the flour mixture. To bring the pastry together, slowly stir in 6-8 tbsp water.

Bake the pastry

Take two sheets of baking paper and roll the pastry out between them. Use this to line a baking tart tin and chill for 20 minutes. Next, place the

baking paper on top and add baking beans, rice or dried pulses. Bake for 15 minutes.

Remove the paper and beans/ rice/pulses and bake for a further 10 minutes (or until the pastry turns golden).

Prepare the filling

First, reduce the oven temperature to 160c. In a food processor, add the tofu, nutritional yeast, turmeric, pepper, garlic, onion granules, cornflour and 1 tsp salt. Blitz everything together for a few seconds, slowly adding the milk and blending until the

mixture is smooth and thick.

Add 1 tbsp chilli relish, adjust seasoning to taste and blend for a further few seconds.

Assemble the quiche

Using a spoon, add the filling into the pastry case and flatten the surface with the back of the spoon. Add small chunks of Shamembert, chilli relish and a few spinach leaves. Bake for 30 minutes (or until the quiche turns golden and just set in the middle). Leave to cool for a few minutes and add a few spinach leaves. Slice it up, serve with a salad and enjoy!

TACKLE SOME ‘MILES WITHOUT STILES’

ILES without Stiles are well-surfaced, easy access routes without stiles, steps or steep gradients. They provide access to amazing views, moorland expanses, intimate dales, dramatic geology, distinctive habitats and tranquil, undeveloped areas.

Routes are suitable for people of all fitness levels and those with limited mobility, including wheelchair users,

families with pushchairs, and the visually impaired.

Some of the routes may also be ideal for young children to cycle on.

The routes are graded to show whether they are accessible for ‘all’, ‘many’ or ‘some’ and are accompanied by clear maps, photographs and a handbook.

We feature below two of the Miles for Stiles routes in the Peak District.

DERWENT DAM

Explore the drama of the Derwent Valley and the home of the Dambusters; with the option of Tramper and cycle hire.

The RAF’s famous 617 squadron flew practice sorties over Derwent Dam with their ‘bouncing bombs’, in preparation for their epic 1943 raid on the dams of the German Ruhr.

The twin-towered dam is at its most impressive when the water cascades over it.

There is local traffic on the road section of the route.

The visitor centre is accessible to wheelchair users and is open weekdays from 10am to 3.30pm; weekends and bank holidays from 9.30am to 4.30pm (closed 30 mins for lunch). It is closed on Christmas Day. Holly takes ‘Emerging Artist’ title

S

HEFFIELD-BASED artist Holly Clifford has been announced as the winner of the prestigious Peak District Artisans’ Emerging Artist Award.

The award, which is presented every two years, is a way of supporting creative individuals at the start of their career by opening doors to opportunities for showing and promoting their work.

Members of Peak District Artisans, many of whom are of international renown, are hand-picked for the quality of their work, so the PDA Emerging Artist Award is an incredible accolade.

Holly, 29, won over the judges with her stunningly crafted topographic wall pieces and jewellery.

A graduate of the Birmingham School of Jewellery, Holly started her first jewellery brand from her garden shed before moving to Sheffield and a bigger workshop at The Persistence Works, where the topography of the nearby Peak District became an inspiration for some of her work.

She said: “I am very excited to have been chosen for the award! I’ve put a huge amount of time and energy into developing my level of craftsmanship over the last couple of years.

Holly is the third winner of the Emerging Artist title. The first award winner in 2019 was Rebecca Perry, a ceramicist from Chesterfield who now

has a studio in Sheffield; and the other winner, in 2021, was Bethan Nadin, an artist raised in the Highlands who now lives in the Peak District.

ON THE BONFIRE?

If you are clearing out your clutter this January, you might want to think twice before consigning items to the bonfire, writes Vivienne Milburn.

ISCOVERED during a house contents’ valuation in Derbyshire, the damaged armchair we have pictured only just escaped the bonfire. Fortunately, when I was asked to value it, I recognised that its very broad seat could be an indication of a Howard & Sons chair. A characteristic of Howard armchairs is that they have very broad seats. The armchair made £6,250 when it was included in a Fine Antique Furniture auction recently.

be found at auction. Getting a Howard chair is a must for any traditional English interior.

The Howard chair is actually one in a range of chairs and sofas called Bridgewater type.

The Deep-Seated Bridgewater armchair was the ‘original’ Bridgewater chair, and it is the most recognisable shape, as well as the most copied. It’s the one we think of when we mention a Howard chair: low and curved, with a generous seat, curved and padded armrests and headrest. An armchair that has proved to be an enduring investment through the years.

At present, we are in an upholstery revival, as more antique furniture is rejuvenated by some animal skin fabric upholstery. When assessing upholstered furniture, the understanding is that if a piece has sprung upholstery, it is either Victorian or a later date, as original Georgian upholstery is padded with horsehair and with no metal springs. After leaving behind international corporate life, Anastasia Sarycheva was feeling lost and lonely in her new Derbyshire home – until she discovered baking. Fiona Stubbs learns how a hobby became not only a thriving business but the recipe for happiness.

T

HE plate of exquisitely-crafted tartlets and macarons on the table in front of me look like a work of art. And then comes the taste! Each bite reveals intricate layers of flavours and textures… I’d never imagined there could be so much complexity in such dainty confections.

So it’s quite a surprise when Anastasia Sarycheva casually announces: “I couldn’t bake until three years ago. I used to be very bad at it! I mean, really bad. Whenever I made anything, people would say: ‘It’s okay and it tastes lovely. That’s what matters.’

But I think they were just being polite...”

It’s a very different story now, as Anastasia’s Perfect_Peaks_Patisserie, which launched on Instagram in 2021, attracts an ever-increasing, and grateful, audience.

The turning point for Russian-born Anastasia came three years ago when, finding herself bored in a new country – and missing her former corporate career – she enrolled on an online baking course.

“I was a bored housewife, not knowing what to do with my energy, my head or my hands,” she says. “I didn’t know a thing about baking, so I guess I took the baking class to become a better housewife. I thought that, when we had people round for dinner, I could make the dessert rather than serve shop-bought.”

The benefits turned out to be far greater as baking led her to a new career, new friends and – ultimately – happiness.

Anastasia’s journey from Russia to Derbyshire began in her native Sakhalin, an island close to Japan. While working there in the oil industry for ExxonMobil, she met her British husband, Martin, who worked for a different oil company.

A job transfer led Martin and Anastasia to move to Houston, Texas, where they lived and worked for five years. During that time, they also welcomed their three sons, Jacob, now aged 14, and 12-year-old twins Oliver and Charlie.

Further transfers followed to Perth, Australia, then back to the USA, to New Orleans. “Throughout our moves, I kept working in the oil industry,” recalls Anastasia. “I was juggling children and work until we arrived in New Orleans.

There was nothing there, workwise, for me, so I thought I’d take some time out to spend with the kids.

“I’d never been very mumsy, though, I felt I’d missed out on play dates and things.

In New Orleans, I had the chance for the first time to do all that and I enjoyed it.

“Then Martin lost his job, which was scary but opened up new opportunities for him. I think he felt quite homesick and wanted to return to the UK. He was originally from Lancashire but had friends in Derbyshire so, whenever we’d visited the UK, we came here.”

The family lived in Chorley for a while before settling in Darley Dale. Anastasia confides: “I didn’t really want to move to the

UK – I wasn’t 100 per cent happy. I couldn’t help thinking ‘what am I doing here in the middle of nowhere?’ The kids were older and I was sitting at home doing nothing.

“I missed my career. ExxonMobil was a good company to work for. I earned good money and they looked after you. I’d always felt proud of myself, working for such a big corporation.

“After we moved to the UK, I went to see a friend in Amsterdam. We’d started out in the oil company together and she was still working for it.

“While I was staying with her, we met up with other colleagues. They were all smartly dressed and professional. I felt I was ‘just a housewife’. Afterwards I told my friend that I felt jealous of her and she said: ‘Are you crazy? I’m jealous of you!’ I guess, sometimes, we all want something we don’t have.

“So, I suppose it was a combination of things that led me to baking. I saw something on Instagram and thought ‘that’s pretty’. Then I enrolled on the course.

“I literally started with a bowl and a spoon. Martin was laughing at me, asking: ‘Are you baking?’ My first cake turned out okay – at the time I thought 77 Reflections January 2024

FOCUS ON FOOD & DRINK it was almost perfect and it inspired me to do more! I made another and another – and I realised I was really enjoying it.

“I started sharing my bakes with neighbours and friends and I was getting lots of compliments. Then people said I should sell them.

“The idea slowly crept into my mind but it took me a year to admit to myself that I wanted to do this as a business. Even though I admired other bakers who were doing it, I was scared of what people would think.

“My career until then had been corporate rather than creative. I’d worked in procurement – I was a numbers person. I wasn’t a ‘making’ person.

“A couple of friends said: ‘Just start on Instagram’. That, in itself, took me a couple of months to do. But, when I posted some pictures, people started asking to buy.

“I wanted to sell mousse cakes but

customers were asking for macarons.

They’re trendy, luxurious. They’ve become my signature now.”

Anastasia creates macarons in a wide range of flavours and colours, some reflecting the seasons and calendar highlights, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Tartlets are also in demand – beautiful to look at and to eat.

So has she really never been artistic?

“No!” she exclaims. “I never thought I was creative. I know other bakers who say ‘since I was a little girl, I’ve loved to bake’. I didn’t!

“Maybe it was just sitting in me, waiting for the right moment. I do love to experiment with flavours and like to develop seasonal recipes or work to individual orders.

“I personally like dark chocolate and quite intense, rich flavours. I don’t like things too sweet. If there’s fruit in a bake, there should be an element of tartness or sourness so that it balances the sweetness.

“I reduce the sugar in my macaron shells – it helps the other flavours to be more pronounced. They still contain sugar though – they’re still a treat.”

“And, I now love living in Derbyshire. I think, in the beginning, I wasn’t happy with myself, so it was like ‘let’s blame England’!

“I keep meeting lots of lovely people and the UK is the first country (since moving from Russia) where I’ve made real friendships with local people.

“I’m constantly taking courses, learning about food and trends – and I love sharing my bakes!”

It is an absolute pleasure having Tharun in my set and he makes my job very easy due to his passion for maths and his constant enthusiasm to succeed. We are very proud to have him attend Parkside Community School.”

BUXTON International Festival (4-21 July, 2024) has just launched its first wave of tickets. Early bird tickets for Carlos Acosta and discounted Jazz Weekender packages are now available from the Festival Box Office.

Carlos Acosta brings his highly acclaimed show, ‘On Before’, to Buxton Opera House on the weekend of July 20 and 21, 2024, at 7.30pm each night, as part of an international tour presented

by Norwich Theatre and Valid Productions.

The intensely personal evening of dance is created and performed by the legendary Cuban dancer and features fellow dancer Laura Rodriguez. Tickets cost £20-£60.

Buxton’s Jazz Weekender Packages – Buxton’s all-day jazz “passes”, including trad, contemporary, New Orleans, gospel and Afro-jazz – have proved hugely popular over the last two years. MARKING 375 years since his execution, the Harley Foundation on the Welbeck Estate will show a rare miniature painting of Charles I with mica overlays, alongside a pair of black silk gloves said to have been worn by the King on the scaffold.

From January 26 until July 28, 2024, visitors can see the miniature painting and gloves in the Harley Foundation’s award-winning museum.

These objects tell the story of Charles I’s trial and execution, and join the permanent museum exhibits which include the pearl earring taken from his severed head, his gold toothpick and emerald seal.

The miniature shows Charles I at his trial, wearing a black hat and cloak. This portrait can be transformed by ten painted mica overlays – much like a modern paper doll. Visitors can see Charles surrounded by spectators at his trial, the executioner raising his severed head and finally, Charles as a martyr.

Lisa Gee, Director of the Harley Foundation, said: “Objects like these provide a fascinating

insight into the cult of Charles I. His miniature tells a bloody story and was made to be treasured and carried around. It seems ironic that a deeply unpopular King gained a new kind of status from his execution. It also points to the deep loyalty felt by royalists towards the King.”

The pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution was taken from the ear of the severed head of the King and given to his daughter, the mother of King William III, who, in turn, gave it to the 1st Duke of Portland.

These objects are on show in ‘Unseen Treasures of The Portland Collection’, an historic art exhibition.

A highlight of the exhibition is a picture gallery stacked with Tudor and Jacobean portraits.

‘Unseen Treasures’ is sponsored by Bonhams. The exhibition is free to enter and there is a free car park. The museum is open Tuesday – Sunday.

PHOTOGRAPHER’S DESCRIPTION: This impressive Stag, who was known as ‘Bruce’ amongst the locals, was a firm favourite for spotting out on the moors. With fantastic antlers, he made a striking subject to photograph. Unfortunately, Bruce passed away last winter, and it just doesn’t feel the same without him in this location. This was is one of my favourites too during the rut a couple of years ago. It was a stunning evening with great light. Bruce didn’t mind us, but would keep popping up whilst grazing. This gave me an opportunity to get a shot with Hope Valley in the distance as the sun was low in the sky starting to set.
