Emulsion is an evolving concept, bringing together the best of contemporary music in various genres, allowing the different elements to co-exist or interact in the form of collaborations and commissions. At the heart of this melting pot of musicians and ideas is the Emulsion Sinfonietta – a colourful and flexible line-up of trumpet, violin, clarinets, saxes, oboe/cor anglais, cello, electric guitar, bass and drum kit (sometimes two!). We strive to bring together different audiences and remind people of how important it is to challenge one’s expectations, and how exploring and listening to new music is exciting not daunting.

Founded in 2012 by London-based saxophonist/composer Trish Clowes, to date Emulsion has put on three of its own festivals (the third of which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3), run a series of professional development workshops for its core artists (funded by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation), commissioned eleven news works (supported by the PRS for Music Foundation, Musikkfondene, Arts Council England and Cheltenham Music Festival) and participated in a five-day residency at Cheltenham Music Festival 2015.

As part of our evolution Emulsion is looking to collaborate with other festivals around the world, creating a unique strand of Emulsion activities within an existing festival, working with local musicians/artists.

Multi award winning jazz pianist and prolific composer Gwilym Simcock moves effortlessly between jazz and classical creating a sound that is very much his own.

He works with orchestras, choirs, big bands, small ensembles and musicians from all areas of music including jazz, folk, pop and classical combining through-composed elements with improvisation. Described as a pianist of ‘exceptional’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘dazzling’ ability, he is renowned for his solo performances, releasing a Barclaycard Mercury nominated solo album 'Good Days at Schloss Elmau” on ACT in 2011 which was lauded as "dazzlingly fresh", "world class", "stupendous" "phenomenal" "a cause for huge celebration". His music is widely acclaimed as ‘engaging, exciting, often unexpected, melodically enthralling, complex yet hugely accessible', and above all 'wonderfully optimistic’.

Gwilym is often on radio and TV including The Proms on BBC2 TV, as guest presenter on ‘Saturday Classics’ and “Composer of the Week” on BBC Radio 3, and in 2014 and 2016 with the finalists for BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Awards on BBC4 TV. In 2014 he released two highly acclaimed albums on ACT “Instrumation” with the City of London Sinfonia and “Reverie at Schloss Elmau” a duo with his long time collaborator bassist Yuri Goloubev. Gwilym co-leads Anglo-American Supergroup 'The Impossible Gentlemen' (with Mike Walker, Steve Rodby and Adam Nussbaum) who were nominated as Best Ensemble in the 2013 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. He is currently touring the world with US guitar legend Pat Metheny’s new quartet with Linda Oh and Antonio Sanchez with whom he will be releasing his next recording on Nonesuch. He is Professor of Jazz Piano at his alma mater The Royal Academy of Music.

Saxophonist Trish Clowes has just released and toured her fourth album for Basho Records ‘My Iris’ The album features Clowes’ new quartet, also called My Iris, with Chris Montague guitar, Ross Stanley piano and Hammond organ and James Maddren drums.

A prolific and original composer Clowes’ previous albums mixed genres and often involved larger ensembles. Clowes’ third album ‘Pocket Compass’, composed whilst she was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, features four tracks with the BBC Concert Orchestra. This was such a success that the BBCCO commissioned her to write “The Fox, The Parakeet & The Chestnut” for the London Jazz Festival in 2015, for which she won the prestigious BASCA Composer Award. The BBCCO have commissioned her to write a new work for a family concert at the London Jazz Festival again in 2017.

She has appeared on the BBC Proms Extra, Radio Bremen, Celtic Connections with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 2015, many broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and has performed with acclaimed German pianist Michael Wollny as part of a tribute concert to the late John Taylor.

Trish Clowes has recently been appointed professor of jazz saxophone and improvisation at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
