HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT: DR. CARLA HAYDEN
Today, we celebrate Dr. Carla Hayden, a renowned leader in library science and a fierce advocate for equity, literacy, and universal access to information. In 2016, Dr. Hayden made history when she was appointed by President Barack Obama to be our 14th Librarian of Congress, becoming the first woman and the first African American to lead the Library of Congress, our nation’s oldest federal cultural institution. In this role, which she held until 2025, she transformed one of our country’s most vital institutions, making it more inclusive and responsive to the needs of our diverse democracy.
Dr. Hayden has spent her life working in the heart of our public libraries, consistently positioning the library as a cornerstone of learning and access to a better future. With over 23 years as the CEO of Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library, she pioneered community-centered programs and opened after-school centers that provided homework assistance and career counseling for teens. She has also served as president of the American Library Association, influencing the development of the Spectrum Scholarship Program, which helps students of color complete their graduate degrees and enter leadership positions within the field.
At Bank Street, we deeply admire the boldness she has shown through her steadfast defense of libraries as protectors of free thought and informed citizenship. Dr. Hayden’s commitment to inclusive literature mirrors our own century-long mission to nurture authentic, emotionally rich stories for children. Currently a senior fellow at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, she continues to model the principled leadership and dedication to social justice that we know our graduates will carry forward.
So, Dr. Carla Hayden, for your historic leadership, your unwavering defense of the right to read, and your lifelong service to the ideals of a diverse democracy, we are proud to honor your legacy and we confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.
HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT: FRANCES LAJEAN BARCLIFT
Today, we celebrate Frances Lajean Barclift, who is lovingly known as Mama Fela. She’s a visionary educator who has dedicated her life to nurturing our youngest learners and whose lifelong devotion has transformed the landscape of early childhood education.
A proud Bank Street alumna, Mama Fela earned her master’s degree in Early Childhood Leadership in 2002. Her life’s work is a living embodiment of our college’s mission, as she spent over four decades championing the belief that Black and Brown children thrive when they are seen, celebrated, and reflected in their classrooms.
Mama Fela’s journey began in her own Bed-Stuy brownstone, where she was driven by a desire to provide her youngest child, Aaliyah, who is now the new executive director of the program created for her, with an educational beginning rooted in strength and cultural pride. In 1981, she took her ideas out into her community by founding Little Sun People, an Afrocentric preschool that incorporates themes of social justice into its curriculum and teaches Black and Brown children, from their very first steps, that they are smart and that they belong.
Throughout her career, Mama Fela has remained dedicated to dismantling the effects of systemic inequity on our youngest children. She established a curriculum that celebrates the beauty and strength of racial difference and that empowers students to embrace their own excellence and to navigate the world with confidence.
Her profound contributions have earned her the deep respect of the Bank Street community, which honored her with the Bank Street College Alumni Association Recognition Award in 2018 for her unparalleled work in the field of early childhood education. When she retired in 2024, she codified her curriculum, ensuring that her transformative ideas will continue to reach New York City’s youngest learners into the future.
So, Frances Lajean Barclift, for your courageous leadership and your enduring investment in the dignity of all children, we are proud to honor your legacy and we confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.
STUDENT SPEAKERS
Sam Harris is thrilled to represent the New York City Teaching Fellows Program and the whole Bank Street Teaching and Learning community at today’s Commencement. Members of the 38th Teaching Fellows Cohort have spent the last 24 months transforming from a group of strangers with wildly different backgrounds and experiences into a support system, a family, and a community of fellow Fellows. Graduates of Bank Street and the New York City Teaching Fellows are a needed lifeline for a city that is facing an ever-worsening teacher shortage, and if you want to make real, tangible change in your life and across this city: Join us. When not in the classroom, Sam enjoys pie, walking 50,000 steps in a day, and indie punk music.
Caryl Reid is a proud elementary educator in the New York City public school system with over a decade of experience and is currently teaching third grade at P.S. 76 in the Bronx. He earned his Master of Science in Education from Bank Street College through the Childhood Special and General Education Dual Certification program in 2015 and graduates today from the Leadership in Mathematics Education program. He supports teachers and teacher leaders through both his school community and through NYC Men Teach and Teacher Career Pathways, and works to create spaces where educators feel supported to reflect on their practice, take instructional risks, and grow in their craft. Caryl aspires to expand his impact beyond the classroom by building teacher capacity and advancing the cultivation of the genius of both educators and students.
