Chairman's Report

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JOHN MURRAY, CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the Spring edition of InTouch magazine which also marks the beginning of another ClubGRANTS year. The Canterbury-Bankstown and Baulkham Hills committees have supported some very worthwhile initiatives this year and I hope you will all be pleased with our contributions.

CLUBGRANTS Bankstown Sports, together with Birrong Sports and Bankstown Bowls have presented 42 community organisations in the Canterbury-Bankstown region with $510,140.30 in cash support for this year’s round of ClubGRANTS. Our feature article focuses on the Recreation, Sports and Aquatics Club (RSAC) which is located in Bankstown and is run solely by volunteers. This unfunded organisation has served the community for almost 30 years, providing social activities, sport, recreation and other opportunities for people living with a disability. Bankstown Sports Club is a major sponsor of RSAC, contributing tens of thousands of dollars in cash and in-kind support every year. Baulkham Hills Sports Club has also supported 6 organisations with over $30,000 in grants. I would like to congratulate each of the committees who have worked hard to approve these funding grants, and a full breakdown of all ClubGRANTS recipients is featured in this magazine on page 7.

THE ACRES CLUB The Acres Club in Greenacre is progressing nicely following our amalgamation in January. We have given the venue a fresh, modern look with new furniture and décor, and we have upgraded the services and facilities there. There’s a really great group of staff looking after the bar and the bistro, which has recently been revamped as The Acres

Kitchen, and our Family Fun Days are proving to be very popular with the local community. If you haven’t already been down to check it out, I highly recommend it!

AUBURN TENNIS CLUB We are hoping to have another club joining the Bankstown Sports family in the coming months, with the amalgamation process underway with Auburn Tennis Club. This venue has been a part of the local community for over 40 years, providing sport and leisure facilities for all ages. It features tennis courts and a popular bistro, and is a favourite with the locals. Members from both clubs have voted unanimously to pursue an amalgamation to ensure the future of this great club, and we look forward to working together once final government approval is given.

DO SOMETHING DAY We took part in Do Something Day again this year, and I’m pleased to report it was a great success. The event is an initiative of ClubsNSW, encouraging people to carry out random acts of kindness to brighten someone’s day. In the past, we have held food drives and charity movie sessions but this year, we wanted to bring people together on a more personal level. We offered $5 vouchers for people to spend anywhere in the club if they brought along a loved one, friend or neighbour to spend some quality time and have a casual chat. We had a huge response and it was so lovely to see so

many members and guests taking up the offer and enjoying a coffee or a treat on us.

PROJECT SYDNEY Our club hosted the annual Project Sydney Gala Dinner on 29 June in The Grand Ballroom, celebrating the initiatives, projects and developments being rolled out across western Sydney. The event was attended by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, other leaders in politics and the business, education and entertainment sectors. 45 students from the University of Western Sydney and TAFE were awarded mentorships on the night, giving them the opportunity to work with top business people in their chosen fields to help prepare them for jobs in the future. I would like to congratulate them on all of their hard work to date, and I wish them the best of luck.

FLINDERS CENTRE The new office tower is really taking shape and is on-track for a mid-2018 grand opening. The 1st and 2nd floors of the Flinders Centre have now been leased and we are in negotiations with potential tenants for space on the 3rd floor. It has been great to see the project take shape and I would like to commend contractors Paynter Dixon for carrying out the construction works with minimal disruption to club members and guests.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of members who have recently passed away: Pele Lutui Palmer, Betty Kelly, Barry Daniels, Ray Johnson, Alexander Mearns, Frank Leuzzi, Margaret Stewart, Maija Freimanis, Isaac Lakkis, Patricia Tracey, Fay Irwin, Victor Buttigieg, Cathy Bransdon, Myles Godden, Kevin Crawford, David Hepper, Harold Neville, Douglas Davenport, Thomas Boddy, Darrell Cape, Bruce Crouch, Norman Dawes, Raymond Hayes, Bernard White, Richard Ayres, Said Hanna, Janice Labrie, John Dryden and Frederick Stellar. The following members were reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speedy recovery: Rita Mitchell, Jamil Malki, Annie Billam, Doreen Hutchinson and James McMaster.

It's all about

Quality of life... If you’ve never heard of the Recreation, Sports and Aquatic Club (RSAC) before, we would like to introduce you to an organisation that works tirelessly to provide activities, services and support to people with a disability. George Shalhoub (pictured, page 5) LOVES to dance. If there is music playing somewhere, expect to see him front and centre on the dance floor. He also enjoys cooking, tennis and cricket, and he plays a mean game of tenpin bowling! George is a bubbly, energetic and talented 44-year-old. He also has a moderate intellectual disability. George doesn’t let this stop him from living life to the fullest, and that’s in part thanks to the RSAC in Bankstown. He has been attending the programs at RSAC since the first night it opened almost 30 years ago, and has picked up some incredible skills which

have helped him to get a job. “I work at Condell Park for DSA (Disability Services Australia). I pack tubes into boxes for them and we do a lot of packaging stuff. We have lots of fun there and we mix with people. I’ve made lots of friends”. His mum Mary says RSAC has had an incredibly positive impact in their family. “Over the years, having those activities and knowing George has somewhere to go during the day or in the evening, it’s been really great. They are always changing activities for them to do which

is fantastic. RSAC has been an amazing support network for us as well.” RSAC is an unfunded, community-based organisation whose sole aim is to provide social activities, sport, recreation and other opportunities for people aged 4-70 years, who are living with a disability. Their mission is to be a leading-edge provider of services that promote quality of life and inclusion to people with disabilities, their carers and their families. Close to 1,000 people use their programs every year, but the organisation does not receive any regular funding and relies on fundraising events, community grants and participant contributions. Some of the regular programs run by RSAC include swimming lessons, cooking classes (pictured), basketball, bocce, cricket, drama and dance, carpet bowls, soccer, tenpin bowling, tennis, social clubs, discos, school holiday programs and family activities. These are run by a team of dedicated volunteers who give up their time each week to ensure these activities go ahead. Bankstown Sports Club is a major sponsor of RSAC. Each year we contribute more than $100,000 of in-kind support by providing cleaning services, maintenance, installation, staff man-hours and rent for their building space. Their annual expenses amount to around $380,000 per annum and Jenny

Bombardieri, Executive Officer at RSAC, says they would not exist without help from organisations like Bankstown Sports. “The provision of the grant for this space is pivotal to our ability to develop and undertake the many projects and activities that help to educate, support and enrich the lives of people with a disability. “Participating in RSAC activities changes people’s lives. Our members learn new skills, become fitter and healthier, they make friends, expand their knowledge of the community and see what they can achieve. They develop a support network which includes coaches, volunteers, peers and carers; people they can relate to”.

volunteers and many others who help out every now and then. If you would like more information about RSAC, visit http://www.disabledsportrsac.org.au/

COVER PHOTO: Simon has been a long-term member of RSAC. His mum is on the club’s board and volunteers at a lot of the events. Brianna has been with RSAC for 10 years. Her dad volunteers with cricket and her mum and aunty help out with the cooking classes.

RSAC is run by a team of volunteers, who generously give up their time each week to supervise dozens of programs and classes. Some of these volunteers have been with the organisation since it began, while others have been helping out for over 15 years. “The value that our volunteers bring goes beyond just helping in an activity; their passion, dedication and interest in our cause drives our ability to provide the services that best meet the needs of people with disabilities in the community”, says Jenny. There are currently 450 people enrolled in RSAC’s programs and classes, with 80 active 5

Throughout our club’s history, it has always been our aim to provide members and guests with the best facilities and the highest standard of customer service possible. We are continually striving to meet the needs of all of our customers and when the need arises, we make changes to improve the experience for everyone who walks through our doors. In recent years, we have undertaken some major construction works within our venue which have resulted in Lucky Cheng’s, Peking Sq. and Basement Brewhouse. We carried out some minor renovations to intouch café in early 2017 to provide a bigger seating area for our guests, and the time has now come to take the next step. Bankstown Sports is

up with the culinary best... Our club has placed 2nd in two separate culinary competitions, and one of our young chef’s has taken out a top honour. CHEF’S TABLE Young Apprentice Chef Cameron Murdon has taken out a top honour at the club industry’s most prestigious cooking competition, the 2017 Chef’s Table. He’s been named Apprentice of the Year, following his performance alongside colleague Sarah Hanslow who won supervisor of the year. The team from Bankstown Sports battled it out against 27 other teams in a Masterchefstyle cook-off which was held at Ryde TAFE in June. The Chef’s Table Competition was created to reward and recognise the many talented chefs, cooks and apprentices in NSW clubs. It offers clubs a unique way to showcase their chef’s talents and promote their venues as top dining destinations. The pair placed second overall in the team competition, which was made sweeter by Cameron and Sarah's individual award wins. ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball says the quality of the dishes showed once again

that registered clubs are leading the way in the food space. “Well done to Cameron and Bankstown Sports Club. This recognition is another reminder that you don’t have to dine at exclusive city restaurants to sample the best cuisine that NSW has to offer”. Each team was asked to design and prepare a 3-course menu using ingredients not exceeding a total food cost of $22 per person. Dishes were judged on placement of food, taste, texture, visual aspect, hygiene and interaction between team members. Sarah and Cameron delivered a South Australian line-caught squid, house-made pasta, enoki, crispy quinoa, watermelon radish and lemon cloud for entrée, followed by pork rib pie, crispy pork belly, roasted sweet potato, celeriac slaw and pencil leek for main, and a chocolate soufflé with cereal milk and a mandarin gel for dessert.

CHEF’S HAT The Golden Chef’s Hat competition aims to help junior and apprentice chefs develop their cooking skills and broaden their culinary horizons. It provides young chefs with an opportunity to be mentored by some of the best in the business and gives them the chance to pit themselves against their peers to benchmark their skills. This year, Sammy Carbone and Rachael Fenech represented Bankstown Sports in the two-day event at Ryde TAFE in June. They had two and a half hours to prepare a main and a dessert, deciding on a Laksa Ravioli, green tea and pistachio-crusted lamb eye fillet, and a fennel, green bean and orange salad. This was followed by a cinnamon panna cotta, dehydrated toffee apples, a white chocolate and strawberry cannoli mousse and a strawberry coulis. They were judged on a few different things like how carefully we cut meat from the bone, hygiene, workflow, and how well they worked within the time limit. They did extremely well under the time constraints and finished second overall. Bankstown Sports InTouch

Christmas delight! Rudi and Pam Fienbier have been coming to our club for more than 20 years and they have a bit of a soft spot for Platform One, especially at Christmas. The Fienbiers are long term members of Bankstown Sports and their favourite place to dine is Platform One. They have been attending our Christmas Day buffet lunch for as long as they can remember, and Pam says it’s just as good now as when they first came along. “They lay all of the food out in a buffet and everything is beautiful there. The prawns, the crab, the oysters, they have all the baked stuff and the sweets – everything. I can’t fault anything. We told the chef how great it was the last time we were there. We just love it there at Christmas”. This year, Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer will prepare an array of

fresh baked Artisan bread, canapes, salads, a variety of gourmet seafood, Asian dishes, a carving station with ham and turkey, roast beef, Peking duck, sides and a delicious assortment of desserts. Bankstown Sports is not the Fienbier’s local club as they live in Cronulla, but Pam says they will be coming along for Christmas at Platform One again this year. “It’s worth it. It’s a very friendly club. It’s just a pleasure to go there”. To book Platform One or Greenfield Station Bistro Christmas Day Buffet Lunch call 9722 9888.

Forever the

tourist!

Daryl Braithwaite has just recorded a brand-new album and he’s bringing all of his new hits, and some of the old classics to Bankstown Sports this October. Daryl Braithwaite is one of the most famous and beloved voices in Australian music history. He first found fame as the lead singer of Sherbet in the 70s, before going out on his own in the late 80s, and songs like Horses, As The Days Go By and Howzat became a staple in most Aussie households throughout the 90’s. More than two decades later, and at the tender age of 64, this music legend is still

pumping out hit after hit, and has just released his new album Forever The Tourist, which he says is a personal ‘thank you’ to his most loyal fans for their support over the years. Daryl will be performing in The Theatre at Bankstown Sports on Saturday, 14 October, and will include a mix of his new songs along with some of the popular classics. He’ll be supported by Brave It Through The Night,

which is a project of award-winning multiinstrumentalist Dean Michael Smith. He blends elements of rock, folk and alternative styles of music to create a passionate and engaging live performance that’s sure to captivate the audience. Tickets are on sale now from main reception or BankstownSports.com/live-shows

Christopher Lee Frazer as John Lennon – has been a performer for over 20 years and has a deep and ongoing respect for everything Beatles. He pours all of his skill and energy into each night’s performance to bring John back to life as the brilliant word-smith and larrikin he was.

Relive the magic and unique sounds that made John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr famous back in the 50s. If you love your rock 'n' roll classics, this show is not to be missed. The Beatle Boys are

He comes from a family of musicians and spent many years touring Australia with Jon English’s concert band, playing lead guitar and singing harmonies. Nando Pettinato as Ringo – he began collecting The Beatle 45’s from a very young age and has spent countless hours mastering the drum parts to many of The Beatles songs. By the age of 10, he could replicate all of Ringo’s parts by ear, with perfect timing. Tickets are $35 each and are available from BankstownSports.com or at main reception.

Almost 30 years after his death, Roy Orbison is still a legend in the music industry, both for his flawless tenor voice and his trademark dark glasses. Fast-forward to 2017 and internationally renowned artist Dean Bourne (named ‘Australia’s Roy Orbison’) is bringing all of his hits back to the stage in Roy Orbison – Reborn. The audience will be mesmerised throughout this unforgettable two-hour concert experience as they are transported back to the great rock era, with hit after hit.

We catch u with me p m of our d bers elightfu l Ladies Bowls team

Not just a

BOWLS CLUB... We caught up with a few members of our delightful Ladies Bowls team to take a look back at how their club began. If you walk into Bankstown Bowls at any time of the day or night on any day of the week, expect to be greeted by every single person who sees you. Whether they’re playing darts, working behind the bar or in the bistro, or out on the green playing a game of bowls, they will stop what they’re doing to welcome you into their club with open arms.

YS KSEY, GLAD : JOYCE COO FROM LEFT RE T SAYER GA AR M D MCINNES AN

The club has the most incredible family feel about it, and that’s what our Ladies Bowls team attributes to their success and longevity over the years. “I love the togetherness at this club and the strength we have to keep coming every week. We used to go away on trips together and we are all such great friends” says Gladys McInnes, who happily sits down for a chat. Gladys joined the Ladies Bowls team in 1969 and began playing once a week on a Tuesday, at the request of her husband. Back in those days, she says, women weren’t allowed in the club until the men realised they needed more money to keep the club afloat. “They had no idea that 200 women would show up on that first day. I remember they didn’t have enough afternoon tea for everyone! I was working for my husband at the time, and

he allowed me to have the day off work on Tuesdays, so I could join the ladies team. And I’ve been a member ever since”. Marea Giacomin is a foundation member of the Ladies Bowls team and says when the women joined the club, the atmosphere changed and the club’s finances improved. She says you need women around because they do things, they make things happen, they fix things and they organise things. “We planned lots of events for our members like Christmas in July, Easter Bonnet Days, children’s Christmas parties, Mother’s Day events and Melbourne Cup. We also organised a special dance after mixed bowls every Sunday”. It may be a little quieter now, but Barbara Barnes who is also a foundation member, says everyone loves getting together. “The ladies used to work as volunteers in the kitchen, we used to clean the club and help out wherever we could. And when anything went wrong, they might as well have been your sisters”. If you’re interested in joining a team at Bankstown Bowls, visit BankstownBowling.com.au

Helping our YOUTH! Baulkham Hills Sports Club has contributed more than $30,000 in ClubGRANTS funding to six very worthwhile community projects. Our club takes pride in giving back to the local community, assisting with special projects and campaigns that benefit the local area. This year through ClubGRANTS, we have provided funding to a number of organisations that the committee feels are making a difference to people living in the Hills District. These include Diamond Women’s Support for their Mum-to-Mum program, Autism Spectrum Australia for specialist therapy for children at Gilroy Catholic College in Castle Hill and the Zonta Club of Sydney Hills Inc for a forum about managing family conflicts. We have also supported Sunnyfield’s project to upgrade the homes of people living with intellectual disabilities, and St John Ambulance Australia for their mobile community education program for 11-16-year old’s. And we have contributed $10,000 to Blacktown Youth Services Association

for a project that will help young people in the Hills District. The Inside Story is an action research project run by Blacktown Youth Services Association, which aims to encourage improvement in services for young people. The campaign will collect information and data from young people aged 12-24 in the Hills Shire which can be provided to service providers in the area, so they can better understand and work with young people in the region. Participants will then be given the opportunity to deliver the project’s findings and provide their input into a youth strategy for the Hills District. Through this project, Blacktown Youth Services Association is hoping to engage and empower young people to address their needs, while also improving their skills and capacity to deal with problems affecting them.

This could include boosting their confidence, self-esteem and employability, as well as social, communication and leadership skills. At the present time, there is a lack of quality information about young people in the Hills, which makes it difficult to provide the services they need. The findings from The Inside Story will be used to set up ongoing services which can be sustained long after the initial campaign has ended. While most of the benefits of this campaign will directly affect young people, the results will be widespread throughout the Hills community, bringing everyone together and making them more connected.

Bingo PlayMates have We’re taking bingo to a whole new level at Birrong Sports, making it even easier to play.

arrived!

Everyone loves playing a game of bingo or two. Whether it’s just for fun in a social setting with friends, or at organised sessions at the club every week, the rush and exhilaration of finding those numbers, completing your books and yelling BINGO! will have you coming back for more every time. At Birrong Sports, we have just upgraded our bingo system to introduce PlayMates, a new electronic gaming system which has replaced the paper cards of the past. They look just like a tablet and are very easy to use, allowing you to play multiple books at the one time. The new PlayMates system has been in place for several months and we have received some very positive feedback from our members, who say they are very easy to use and make the games run more smoothly. If you’re new to the bingo scene and would like to come along and see what it’s all about, we play every Wednesday morning at 10am, and it’s $3 per book. We’re more than happy to take you through the rules and show you how it all works, so come down and try it out!

Stay for lunch afterwards at The Italian Bistro and enjoy an authentic European meal in a casual and relaxed setting. Other weekly activities you might like to try include Poker every Monday and Thursday, Trivia on Tuesday nights, a Meat Raffle on Friday and our Homewares Raffle on Sunday evening.

KIDS EAT FREE! Every Tuesday night at The Italian Bistro, inside Birrong Sports Club. Receive a free kids meal and a kids activity bag with any main meal purchased. Available for dinner between 5.30pm-9pm.

Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer and his team have taken over the food offering at The Acres Club, and there are some delicious new additions to the menu. If taste, quality and variety are what you look for in a menu, look no further than The Acres Kitchen – the new dining offering at The Acres Club in Greenacre. Following the club’s amalgamation with Bankstown Sports, a major refurbishment of the interior was undertaken to give it a clean, fresh and modern look. The next piece of the puzzle in the revamp of the historic venue was to overhaul the bistro. That's where Bankstown Sports Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer comes in. He has created a menu for members and guests to enjoy, which incorporates popular dishes from Greenfield Station Bistro as well as some new items available exclusively from The Acres Kitchen. Some of the menu items you might recognise include the Cheesy Mushroom Arancini Balls, the Mediterranean Tasting Plate for Two, the delicious Darling Downs Scotch Fillet and Great Southern Pinnacle T-bone, Braised Lamb Shanks, The Euro salad, and the yummy Schnity Burger. Sports Report

ATHLETICS CLUB RECOGNISED Bankstown Sports Athletics Club (BSAC) has been named Metropolitan Club of the Year by Athletics NSW, for the second year in a row! The award recognises BSAC’s contribution to athletics over the season, including the club’s capacity to host high quality events and overall athlete performance. During the 2016/17 season, BSAC hosted five ANSW High Performance and Participation meets, which is more than any other club in NSW, with anywhere from 250 – 420 athletes at each event. Two of these meets – The Albie Thomas Mile and The Bankstown Invitational – are recognised as some of the most prestigious events on the

Australian athletics calendar. BSAC has produced a number of junior state champions over the past 12 months and the club won the ANSW State Winter Championship for the sixth consecutive year, equalling the all-time record co-held with Kembla Athletics Club. The club also took home five Age Category Premierships during the 2016 winter season, which was more than any other club. Congratulations to Bankstown Sports Athletics Club and all of its athletes on another great year! A special mention to the BSAC Committee and general volunteers who generously give up their time in the running of the club.
