CHairman’s report john murray, CHAIRMAN

“It is our belief that we must constantly keep improving the Club and its facilities for the benefit of our members and patrons.”

Welfare Report March, April and May 2014

I hope that everyone enjoyed the Christmas season, New Year’s celebrations and Lunar New Year. Many of the families who visited the Club over the period, were very happy that Bankstown Sports celebrated Christmas in the traditional way with outstanding decorations. The snow machine in the Rainforest Lounge was a special delight for children. This year we installed Cherry Blossom trees to commemorate Lunar New Year, with promotions to match. They proved to be very popular and reflected the dynamic and evolving community that is Bankstown.

and effort to making it more comfortable, convenient and attractive. We will also streamline the way you order and receive your dishes.

Your InTouch magazine is now a quarterly publication that will be produced at the turn of each season. You will receive your copy in March, June, September and December, each year. The feedback on our magazine has been very positive, so our intention is to make it even more informative and easy to read. We do understand that our members like to use the magazine as a reference to see what is happening at the Club and what shows are on offer. Our members can also read the digital magazine online, by going to the home page of our website and clicking ‘InTouch Magazine’.

ANZAC Day will be celebrated on Friday April 25, 2014. Last year we held our inaugural ANZAC Day Legacy fundraiser at the Bowling Club. This was a social mixed bowls day and money raised from the entry fees, raffles and donations amounted to $2,200 and was given to Bankstown Legacy. Encouraged by the response, we are holding a second ANZAC Day Legacy Fundraiser at Bankstown Sports Bowling Club and everyone who wishes to support Legacy is invited. We would welcome the support. For details, please read the editorial on page 39 of the magazine. I wish all our members and patrons good health and success in the months to come.

Our Gaming Lounge is now complete and just before Christmas we opened the new Atrium Bar. Located to the left of the Mona Street foyer, this bar offers a comfortable lounge setting beneath a spectacular artistic lighting feature made up of 4,000 lights in waves across 20 metre panels. You will also notice the light panels transform the ceiling with a constantly changing theme. I am once again grateful to all our members and patrons who were patient and co-operative during the renovation because there was nothing but support, with no complaints. I am sure all of you will enjoy this new facility and the special menu on offer at the Atrium Bar that our Executive Chef has created. It is our belief that we must constantly keep improving the Club and its facilities for the benefit of our members and patrons. Soon you will see work starting on the ever popular Greenfield Station Bistro, as we devote time

We are proud of the fact that many people have chosen to recruit all the individuals in their family to become members. We welcome this move and my request is that you encourage a friend or extended member of the family to benefit from one of our upcoming membership offers. Our annual renewal campaign will subsequently begin from May 1 and will continue until June 30, 2014.

The following members were reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speedy recovery: Joan Hansell and Maria Damianou. The following members have passed away recently and to their relatives and friends may we offer our sincere condolences in their time of grief: Leslie Portley, Joy Huntley, Mary Mitchell, Henry Matheson, John Spaul, Joseph Elias, John Grantins, Maria Igoe, Bruce McArdle, Gary Dobbs, Rose Torossian, Sylvia Olive, Shandra Mason, Fred Winfield, Harold Oliver, Valma Crighton, Victor Donnelly, Majorie Rose, Frank Licciardello, Judith Stanton, Dorothy Haywood, Doreen Lee, Henry Mobsy, Winifred Cleave, Joan Hill and Theresa Ryan.

FROM Brahms to Broadway

Bankstown City Choir There are some people that just make you feel good about life. Judy Learmonth, President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Bankstown City Choir, is one such person. The choir is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year and Judy is the only member who has been a part of it since the beginning. Judy and her husband Gordon, who is also an active member of the choir, are currently planning to hold the Anniversary concert at Bankstown Sports Club in late June.

Bankstown Sports has been helping fund the choir through ClubGRANTS for many years. This year, more than $2,000 has been donated to help the 25-member volunteer choir pay for the professional help of conductor, Garry Brahe and accompanist Mavis Noakes and for travel. Every month the choir performs at a different nursing home or retirement village in the Bankstown city area – a service guaranteed to put smiles on faces and build community spirit. The choir is always on the lookout for new members, they’ve had as many as 40 members over the years. They rehearse every Tuesday night from 7.30 to 9.30pm at Georges Hall Community Centre. In a performance you’re likely to hear a wide range of music, from Aussie classics such as I Still Call Australia Home and Click Go The Shears to songs from the musicals such as Phantom of the Opera and Oklahoma to classical and sacred works like Mozart’s Requiem and Brahms. Judy and Gordon also are part of the massive Sydney City Choir that performs Handel’s Messiah each year. To add to their busy lives, they also volunteer to visit elderly people in their homes who are less mobile, and attend Probus meetings at Bankstown Sports every month. “We’re just retired people who like to keep active and of course to sing!” says Judy. “We really appreciate all the help that Bankstown Sports gives to the Bankstown City Choir every year to keep it going. The smiles on the faces of people when we perform make it all worthwhile.” If you’d like to find out more about the choir call Judy on 9644 1421 or visit their website www.bankstowncitychoir.com.

Safety first for

Gillawarna Village

Bankstown Sports has a very close relationship with Bankstown City Aged Care, having been one of the founding members of this great organisation back in 1972. Since that time the club has donated more than $3 million towards a better standard of service in the villages that Bankstown City Aged Care runs. After a terrible fire, and loss of life, at a nursing home in Quakers Hill in 2011, the NSW Government passed laws requiring all bedrooms in aged care facilities to have sprinklers installed by 1 March 2016. At Bankstown City Aged Care’s Gillawarna Village, there are 150 beds, 100 of which, having been built recently, already have sprinklers installed. The challenge for management was to find the money for the other 50 older beds at the village. Bankstown Sports responded to the call, contributing $100,000 late last year to get the work done.

employ less staff to make up the shortfall. Now we can fully maintain our level of care for our residents thanks to this contribution from the club,” says Bankstown City Aged Care CEO, Terry Madden.

“Without this money Bankstown City Aged Care would have been forced to borrow money from the bank to fund the installation and we would have had to

Bankstown Sports CEO Mark Condi says the money was initially earmarked for electricity systems, but when the change in legislation

came, the club approved the expenditure for the sprinklers. “We are proud of our community involvement with people of all ages in the Bankstown area, and the club takes these responsibilities very seriously. We’re very pleased that we have been able to help Gillawarna Village with the installation of these new sprinklers,” Mark Condi says. Bankstown Sports InTouch

THREE generations CELEBRATE

Mother’s Day When Pina Centi left Italy with her husband Gaetano in 1960, her daughter Leah was just two years old. She was wishing for a better life in Australia, and, all these years later, the Birrong resident had her wish granted. She is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

InTouch spent some time with threegenerations of the Centi family – Pina, Leah Lewis and granddaughter Rebecca Metuisela – as they prepared for Mother’s Day 2014. Pina, who lives “virtually next door” to Birrong Sports, says moving to Australia wasn’t just an adventure. It was a challenge … life was difficult, she spoke no English and everything was done differently. Looking back all those years she says what made the journey a success was, and still is, her family – to whom Birrong Sports Club is like a second home. For decades the club has been the community hub of the family. In a longstanding tradition, Pina meets the family at Birrong Sports for a meal every Friday night. Sadly, her husband has become too frail to attend so it’s the only time Pina leaves him for a few hours. Leah Lewis, Pina’s daughter, is the Secretary of Birrong Sports Netball Club and has held executive positions for the last 25 years. “I’m a life member,” she says proudly. The netball club now has nearly one hundred juniors, five teams in the seniors. “We’ve had an amazing year,” she says, “two Birrong coaches were awarded by Bankstown City Netball Association.” Leah is proud of her club, Birrong Sports. “We love this place. It’s so convenient for all

the family and we get together on Fridays for the raffles and for the food. Mario and Carla Libertini run the kitchen so well. It’s packed on Friday and Saturday nights and we love the atmosphere. We also like going for the big Sunday lunch. It’s always been a central part of our lives. We feel as comfortable there as we do at home,” says Leah. Leah’s daughter Rebecca, 31, is the mother of Luca, 3 and Alex, 2. Rebecca remembers the club as a young girl. “It has always been part of my life,” says Rebecca. “My husband is playing Rugby Union in Japan and we feel a long way from home … but the minute I’m back in Australia at the club with the family, I feel so good.” Leah says she likes to spoil Pina the way she was always spoilt herself. “She’s the matriarch of the family now,” she says. So what makes Mother’s Day so special for Pina? “Mum just likes everyone being together,” Leah says. “It is as simple as that. She doesn’t need flowers or chocolates. We just gather for lunch at the club and all is how it should be!”

Mother’s Day

Italian Style Bankstown Sports has been providing services to our members for 55 years now. Many people come to experience what the club has to offer and others use the club as a community hub. Many groups meet in the club on a weekly basis. One of these is the Italian Association of Assistance Club (CO.AS.IT). For over 20 years members of the group have been meeting weekly to allow people to chat in Italian, play cards, call out numbers in pursuit of bingo or ‘tombola’ (as it’s called in Italian) or just drink coffee and enjoy each other’s company. This close-knit group of 50 or so members now meets at Bankstown Sports’ Piano Bar every Thursday, after the club offered to provide a free venue for them three years ago. As the men settle over their cards and the women chat in a circle or play tombola, the idea of Mother’s Day came up. Of course, Mother’s Day is celebrated the world over and, for people like Camilla Baroni, it is a huge day, as she has 17 grandchildren and already 17 great-grandchildren to fill out any gathering!

The women who belong to this special group take much pride in their families and of course their background. When asked where they originally came from in Italy they mention Calabria, Venezia, Puglia, Trieste, Sicily and Liguria. Basically from all over the boot! But apart from dinners and family get togethers, does anyone do anything special for Mother’s Day? At this question, Gerarda Chisari says she has a story to tell. Years ago, when she was at school in Italy, a teacher told her to write a note to her mother telling her how much she loved her. She must put it in an envelope under her mother’s dinner plate on Mother’s Day. She did as was suggested and of course her mother was overwhelmed by the surprise. This beautiful and simple idea

has now been transferred to Gerarda’s own daughter, who this year starts her new profession as a teacher. She is determined to pass the tradition on to her own students. The current President of the group, Angelo Chiandotto, takes great pleasure in organising all the members of the club. Each week he gathers $1.50 from each member who attends and then, three times a year they all have lunch together at La Piazza, where manager Mario Libertini, throws on a subsidised feast. And what occasions do they like to celebrate? Father’s Day, Christmas and Mother’s Day of course! If you’re interested in catching up with this friendly community group, just drop by the Piano Bar any Thursday morning to say hello.

... will light the way Bankstown Sports kicked off 2014 with the unveiling of a major renovation, the brand new Atrium Bar. Designed as a premium destination venue set to the left of the club’s entrance lobby, the bar is elevated on an Italian marble pedestal, with special mood lighting throughout and a high-tech light show directly above it.

T r y t h e Ta pa s M e n u c r a f t e d b y Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer

Editorial

The Atrium Bar is a beer lover’s delight with nine premium beers on tap, including Ruby Tuesday Amber Ale, Peroni, a range of Cascade ales, Crown, a Byron Bay lager and of course a large range of bottled beers. Other drinkers aren’t left out with a top shelf range of Bourbons, Whiskeys, Vodkas, Cognacs, Liqueurs and Cocktails adding class to this beautiful and comfortable new bar seating about 45 people. The bar’s designers have created an intimate atmosphere with low-key lamps providing soft mood lighting which is complemented by the amazing new pixel-wave art lighting feature above it. This stunning new feature is set over four

20m custom-designed panels and features 4,000 LED lights. The lights are programmed to create waves of feature clips that can be used for specific celebrations or with rotating abstract themes. “Thomas Creative in Wollongong has done an extraordinary job setting up this unique installation for the club. It has to be seen to be believed,” says club CEO Mark Condi. “What I like about it particularly is that the pixel wave can be subtle too. It doesn’t interrupt or disturb, it’s more something to discover. This, and the bar’s unique raised setting, has taken what we offer at the club to a new level,” Mr Condi says.

And food has not been forgotten at the Atrium Bar. Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer has crafted a tapas menu to perfectly complement your choice of beverage. Try the Barramundi Spring Rolls with sweet chilli jam, the Goat’s Cheese Fritters with lime pickle and baby basil or the Alaskan Crab Cocktail – just a small selection of what’s on offer. The Atrium Bar is a wonderful addition to the club’s offerings. Already posts on our Facebook page are complimenting the club on this unique space. You can see images of the bar at BankstownSports.com.

It’s hard to believe that in just over 50 years our club has grown out of a small hall into the community precinct it is today. With eight unique dining areas and with the launch of the new Atrium Bar, seven bars as well, there is plenty of space to enjoy a coffee or a brew, a snack or a gourmet meal.

Stepping into the club feels like entering a space that is comfortably familiar and yet always exciting and new. It is easy to find those places where you can just relax or be entertained. We take pride in the community feel of the club and encourage our members to give us feedback and to help make our club an even better place to visit. The club now has over 60,000 active members and since 2008 our membership has grown by 44 per cent. When we have a look at the membership breakdown, 53 per cent of our members are women and 47 per cent men. Every May we launch our Membership Drive for the next 12 months and this year

is no exception. Show your support for our club and the community by renewing and encouraging your friends and family to join as well. Remember membership brings you birthday and Christmas rewards, discounts to shows in The Grand Ballroom and Showroom, a courtesy bus to anywhere within 5km of the club and of course Reward Points for every dollar you spend. Don’t forget the secure underground car park with over 1200 spaces. The club is also conveniently placed next to Bankstown train station so it’s easy to get here by public transport as well. The club is your community hub!

Staff Memorable s t n e m o M

Years of service Recognised Our Team 20 years

k n a Th ou! Y

According to Human Resources Manager, Nicholas Howlin, Bankstown Sports is ‘one big family’ of an organisation. He should know, with 500 direct employees throughout four venues to oversee, it really is a big place. One of the best things about the club is the dedication of the staff, many of whom have worked at Bankstown Sports for many years. Last year the club conducted a survey of staff to find out how they wanted to be recognised for all their hard work. The feedback received has shaped the way the club will recognise staff in future. Rather than big annual dinners with staff inviting partners and over a hundred people attending, they wanted more private recognition, more often. Regular feedback they felt was important for the club to build on its successes.

“Now what we’re finding is that we’re getting nominations from staff for things we wouldn’t ever have received before,” says Nicholas. “The culture of the club is changing and we’re moving forward with more sustainable and environmentally aware initiatives.” Throughout 2014 there will now be more intimate, quarterly events as part of the Rewards and Recognition program which will recognise great ideas that benefit the overall operation of the club. The first of these was held in February, at which three staff were recognised for 20 years of service, four for 15 years and twelve staff for 10 years. The culture of Bankstown Sports from the senior management to the newest arrivals on the floor is very important. If staff are happy with the work environment and are being recognised for their service and achievements, it makes the club an even better place for our members.

‘Live Life’

a theme for everyone

You would have to agree that the theme for this year’s Seniors Week, from March 15-23, is something we should all be embracing, ‘Live Life’. Bankstown Sports members cover every age group, from young adults to seniors and the club provides a range of activities for the young and ‘young at heart’ including playing host to the annual Seniors Week concert organised for more than 20 years by Bankstown Council. Between March 15 and 23, celebrate the ‘getting of wisdom’ here at the club with free entertainment in the Rainforest Lounge – Ron Ashton on Saturday March 15 (5.30pm); Racquel Martinez and Christian Guerrero on Sunday March 16 (2.30pm), Gabby on Saturday March 22 (5.30pm) and Paula Watt and David Bond on Sunday March 23 (2.30pm). There’s also free entertainment in the Piano Bar including Kim Gock (formerly of Hush) on Saturday March 22 (8.30pm). On Wednesday evening in the Showroom, the Vietnamese Song and Dance Night, is one of Sydney’s most unique entertainments. Combining ballroom dancing, karaoke and both Asian and Western music it’s a melting pot of fun for all.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 10.45am the club fills up with our favourite patrons for the ever-popular bingo, and don’t forget every Thursday we hold the indoor bowls and, in the evening, generous meat raffles followed by Trivia. See page 26 for a full listing of free activities at the club all during Autumn. For local community clubs, such as Rotary or View Clubs, the club provides meeting spaces for appropriate community groups. This ensures our members and patrons can gather together in a safe and friendly environment. The Italian CO.AS.IT seniors club is one such group that meets every Thursday to play cards and tombola (a bingo-like game). See the story on Page 9. To help our senior members get around easily, the club provides a courtesy bus for travel to and from the club if they live within a 5km radius.

FANCY THAT! Dianne Lancaster shares her insights on creating super-special events.

Add a little seasoning to your next event! One thing we love to do here at Bankstown Sports is celebrate! Every season of the year offers opportunities for people to gather and have fun, whether you’re hosting a reunion or celebrating a special occasion, using the calendar as inspiration is, well, inspiring. When planning your next event why not use the season as inspiration for your décor, theming and catering. With each changing season, Mother Nature offers us an array of magnificent colours and foods, all of which can be used to create amazing and interesting events that your guests will adore. Autumn has loads of potential. As much as we love the summer months, there’s something nostalgic and calming about autumn, the shorter days, longer nights and thick cosy sweaters. Think rich earth tones, like deep russet and wheat paired with bronzes and blackberry purples, when decorating your autumn event. Really embrace this time of year and use it to create a great atmosphere and setting. Use winter to bring an edge of drama to your event, with lots of red roses, lush greenery and giant candles to really set the mood. It’s all about plush fabrics, intimate lighting, rich colours and dramatic pieces such as oversized candelabras or giant chandeliers. When it comes to winter catering, offer a wholesome and hearty food that can be magnificently presented, such as traditional hotpots or homemade pies in small individual dishes.

Search ‘Innov8ive Events’ on

Spring is all about rebirth and renewal. This beautiful time of year signals the peak wedding and event season. Think outdoors, warm sunny days with beautiful fresh evenings, to take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather. Dress your event space in spring shades of blue, yellow and oranges and continue the spring theme with bouquets of spring flowers. Add to this delicious fresh food stations and you’ll have the perfect spring event. Once summer is in full swing, guests are ready to party. Fire up the barbeque, get the tiki torches ready for a fun luau, or cool off in the pool with a pool party. The 2014 summer trends are a definite move away from the stronger colour palette. If you’re having a special summer event, choose turquoise and vintage shades, or use a combination of muted colours such as cappuccino, dusky pinks and greys. To dress your venue, use white linens with fresh green foliage, lots of candles, crystal and glass. Make sure your menu choices are light and fresh, topped off with a refreshing signature cocktail just to add that something special. There are many creative ways to combine seasonal colour into your event. Every season and holiday presents us with its own unique colours, flowers, flowering plants and foods. Incorporating seasonal elements into your special occasion is a wonderful way to make your event more interesting and more memorable.

Local favourite Casey Donovan

returns to Bankstown How extraordinary that it has been 10 years since Bankstown girl Casey Donovan was crowned in Australian Idol! Time really flies.

It must be hard to believe that you're celebrating 10 years in the entertainment business. What do you remember about growing up in Bankstown?

To celebrate, Casey is doing an extensive You Believed – 10 Year Anniversary Tour which will see her perform at Bankstown Sports in June.

Mostly I remember playing sports. In particular, I loved participating in Bankstown Little Athletics. I also remember all the wonderful playing fields of the area, which was great fun for us as kids.

On this 90-minute journey you’ll hear Casey performing songs from her platinum selling album For You, through to music from her successful stage productions of The Sapphires and Flowerchildren. Casey will also bring to the show her ‘Big, Beautiful and Sexy’ ethos. As a proud role model for the plus-size community, she hopes to inspire people to embrace who they are. In preparation for her appearance at the club, InTouch asked Casey what we are going to expect.

Do you have a regular band? Tell us how you put the 90-minute show together. I do have an amazing circle of musicians that I play with regularly and between us all, we musically direct my shows. This show was put together, drawing on inspirational songs that have made an impression on me throughout my career – and also a chance to re-visit songs that bring about memories of positive change in my life.

You're an ambassador for being Big, Beautiful and Sexy, which was the name of your tour last year. Do you like fashion and where do you get your clothes? I love fashion – especially Big, Beautiful and Sexy clothes. I especially love buying my clothes at City Chic, Style and Substance and I love to find plus-size bargains wherever I can find them! Bankstown Sports is proud to be part of your 'You Believed' tour. How far will the tour take you? Aside from Bankstown, which is a favourite of mine, I am touring extensively throughout New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland visiting many of my favourite towns and cities. Casey Donovan takes over the Showroom on June 21 at 8pm. Tickets are $25. To book visit BankstownSports.com. Bankstown Sports InTouch

Club installs Australia’s largest

indoor composter Bankstown Sports has Australia’s largest indoor, on-site composting unit and is leading the way for other clubs and organisations with the resulting environmental benefits and cost savings. This all began when Closed Loop Organics were approached to do a waste audit of the club and found that 65% of the garbage going to landfill was food waste. With this discovery the club invested in an on-site composting unit that can turn 600kg of waste into 60kg of compost in 24 hours. According to Bankstown Sports Operations Manager, Michael Clancy, the club has already cut down the number of garbage collections from three to one a week,

ensuring the club is more environmentally sustainable and operating in a more cost-efficient way. The prime beneficiaries though, are the Chester Hill community gardens which are now receiving 100kg of donated compost a week. Michael Clancy says, “There are other broader benefits of on-site composting.” “For a start, this method reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as food waste is not left rotting in landfill. The resulting

compost is nutrient rich and has no odour, so it becomes a resource for gardens and vegetable crops, leading to a healthier and happier community.” The club is not resting on its laurels just with this initiative. There is now a monthly Sustainability Committee with 19 representatives from all areas of the club. One of the many new initiatives of the committee is to provide shredded paper to the RSPCA.

Fundraiser for

Legacy on ANZAC Day Last year Legacy turned 90 years old. This wonderful organisation is dedicated to caring for families of deceased and incapacitated defence force members and currently cares for over 100,000 widows and 1,900 children and disabled dependents around Australia. This massive job requires constant support, which is often visible during Legacy Week when thousands of volunteers sell badges and pins on the streets every year. In late 2012 whilst visiting our bowling club, Bankstown Sports Club Chairman John Murray had an idea to raise funds for Legacy. Why not, in the spirit of Anzac Day, have a day of good food and plenty of bowling and raise some money. The first event last year raised $2,200 and this year they’re hoping to raise even more. On Friday April 25, for just $20 per player, $80 for a team of four, teams can play bowls, have some fun and know they are helping Legacy.

The club encourages all ages, experienced or first timers, barefoot or not to come along. Bowls will be provided for those who need them and it’s not just about the sporting side of it. Your entry includes lunch, which if last year is anything to go by, will be huge: a roast dinner of either pork or beef. “You can’t complain about this meal,” Rob Milton, President of Bankstown Sports Bowls says. “After it you feel like a siesta. But instead of sleeping, that’s when we throw on the raffle with a stack of great prizes!” The Bowls Club will open at 9am on Anzac Day, with the first game at 9.30am. There’ll be a short Anzac Day service at 11am before getting back on the greens prior to lunch. For more information call Bankstown Sports Bowls Club on Northam Avenue on 9790 0176.

sports report Sports Administrator, Marie Kanaan, shares the news from our sporting clubs.

Track Champs Five years ago, Alec Nguyen joined Bankstown Sports Little Athletics after his mother Minh noticed he was doing well in school athletics carnivals and hoped that by joining the club his performances would improve. She was not wrong. In the last two years, Alec has consistently medalled at national carnivals in 100m, 200m, long jump and hurdles events.

form Alec Nguyen showing fine over the long jump pit

Alec currently holds the NSW State Record in the Under 14 boys 200m with a lightning fast time of 22.90 seconds. He also runs a quick 100m with an Under 13 boys state record of 12.04 seconds. Christopher Gerace of the Bankstown Sports Senior Athletics Club is similarly fast. Last year, he recorded a personal best time of 12.06 seconds in the Under 12 Boys 100m at the 2013 School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships, to take home the gold medal. Christopher also doubled up winning gold in the 200m event in a personal best time of 24.55 seconds.

We congratulate both boys and wish all members of the Bankstown Sports Little and Senior Athletics Clubs all the best for 2014. The Arab Bank Australia Cup saw junior and senior teams from Bankstown Sports, Birrong Sports, Yagoona, Regents Park, Auburn, Marrickville and Banksia, gathered for a gala day format of football and coaching clinics. Despite the blistering heat, the day was well attended by the community with special guests including Bankstown City Council Mayor, Khal Asfour. The crowd was treated with a visit from Western Sydney Wanderers defender Shannon Cole, who shared his experience, highlighting that persistence and hard work is the key to his success.

Matthew Bennett first played for Baulkham Hills Baseball in the Under 18s which kicked off a very long and distinguished baseball career. He has since dominated batters with his pitching prowess, breaking records and collecting awards along the way. Matthew represented Australia between 2000 and 2003 and NSW between 1997 and 2005. Following two years of baseball in America, he returned to his beloved “Baulko” to continue his dominance on the mound.

Bankstown City Council Mayor Kh ALFA President Remy We al Asfour and hbe*

In the 2010/2011 season Matthew struck out his 1,000th batter – the first in history to reach this milestone. In the last two years he has been appropriately recognised by Baseball NSW and awarded the Lionel Harris Medal, voted by his peers, as the best player in the Baseball NSW State League. Recently, Matthew has shown he can swing the bat and play the field making him the complete team man. Aptly, Matthew was named the Baulkham Hills Sports Baseball Club Senior Sportsperson of the Year for 2013.
