SEPTEMBER 2026

From the Editor The turning of the seasons has begun! For us it’s marked by the prepping of both the Avon Football and Netball Association end of season medal count power point presentation AND the local bowls fixture book in the same week—and of course it’s Banksia Bulletin week too. The new 2026 print of the Quairading Phone Book and Business Directory is now available! Grab your copy for $7 from the Quairading CRC, or let us know if you’d like one posted out to you. We’re having a hoot planning the challenges and checkpoints for the Quairading Car Rally on Sunday 20th September! We’ve got some fun ideas in the works and can’t wait to see everyone out and about exploring the district. Get your team of friends, family or colleagues together and get registered ASAP to join in the fun. And if being behind the wheel isn’t your thing, we’d love to have a few extra helpers on the day, so let us know if you’d like to lend a hand. It’s been a particularly busy couple of months at the CRC, with plenty of community members popping in for a bit of “tech help”. We’ve learned lots of new tricks and processes while helping people claim the State Government’s $100 Fuel Support Payment, apply for Student Assistance Payments and complete the recent Census. We’ve also had plenty of the usual questions about online forms, accounts, passwords, phones and computers—which means we’ve had lots of opportunities to put our favourite problem-solving hats on! Luckily, we love the challenge (and the occasional frantic Google search!) and we’re always happy to help where we can. So, if you’re faced with an online form that’s doing your head in, a website that refuses to cooperate, or some other bit of technology that has you completely stumped, please don’t hesitate to pop in and see us. During particularly busy periods there might be a short wait, or we may book you in for a time to come back, but we’ll always do our best to get you sorted. As I write, I remain hopeful that the promised big rain arrives tonight, scares away some frost and delays the imminent warm spring days just a tad. I hope that ages well.

See you courtside on Sunday to cheer on the mighty Quairading Belles!! Meet a local business This month, we sat down with Mick, one of the owners of the Quairading Post Office, to learn more about him, what inspired his family to take on the business, what his day looks like working at the Quairading Post Office and more. Q: What is your name and what do you do? My name is Mick Grage and my wife and I run the local post office. Q: What inspired you to take on the business? I had been the postie beforehand and when the post office came up for sale, I thought it would be a good opportunity for my family. The plan was for our children to succeed it when we’d finished, but they followed different career paths. Q: What does a typical day look like for you? It starts at 6am in the morning when we go to sort the mail that comes overnight from Perth. I do a street delivery, and my wife Nikki does the rural farm deliveries and, in the afternoon, one of us runs the shop. Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to own a business in a small town? First bit of advice would be to buy the post office because it’s for sale! You need to be community conscious in a small town and have good customer service. Q: Do you have any hobbies that we may not know you have? Q: What’s something on your bucket list? Doing Jigsaws and in the last year we bought a Nikki and I plan to travel for a while. caravan, we both enjoy going camping on the weekends. Q: Are there any certain places you want to travel to? Q: What is your favourite season and why? Everywhere that it’s warm. That’s an easy one, my favourite season is Summer because it’s hot, I hate the cold. A big thank you to Mick for taking the time out of his day to sit down and have a chat. Mick Q: What is your favourite local spot in and Nikki are doing an amazing job running the Quairading? post office, and although it will be sad, they are I play golf and it’s right next to the nature hoping to sell the Post Office and fulfill their reserve so there’s some good walks through dreams of travelling everywhere. Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm So here we are in spring already! And never before have I not been happy to greet this abundant season in the flower garden, as I am this year. It’s not spring that I am dreading but what comes very soon after, because not long after the beautiful annual spring blooms of flowers and bulbs have withered comes the scorching heat of summer. This summer will be even more severe on plants because the soil is not holding very much moisture on account of the driest winter since 2010. We will need to be more vigilant in caring for our gardens with more shade, deep, direct watering and mulching.

September in the Garden

It’s time to – if not already done fertilise roses, spring bulbs and all native garden plants being mindful of the phosphorous tender plants; The September meeting of the QGLG is on Friday the prune bottle 25th at the CRC starting at 9:30am. Warrior Wellbeing Article

Drugs and Alcohol – Your Health & Wellbeing is at Stake We promote the point that choice around our lifestyle is mostly up to us. While genetics, environment and the health system can also impact on our health and wellbeing, in the context of drugs and alcohol the choice is ultimately ours and the consequences of use and misuse are clear and so are the laws. As a community we need to have an honest conversation on why people use and abuse drugs and alcohol. Some reasons are: • Risk taking – as boys and men we are hard wired to take risks • Experimental and boredom • Peer pressure • Habit/addiction • Recreation – to have fun • To feel good and forget, to cope with difficult times in our life, to self-medicate and mask The reasons are complex and varied and through our life at various stages we have been challenged and we will continue to be challenged. Recent research reveals some alarming statistics around drug use: • 46 % of drug users use for fun • 54% of drug users used for self-medication Regarding using drugs for fun, surely there are many other things we can do that don’t damage our body and mind (i.e. embrace and explore our passions and interests). The consequences of drug use are serious from several angles: • The risk factor is extremely high for many illicit drugs, we may only have three chances with a drug before we are affected either medically and/or by addiction • Purity of the drug is unknown and varied (often we don’t know what’s in it?) • Health effects can be permanent (psychosis) • Many legal and financial implications for users • Relationships become fractured (conflict, violence, distrust) With regard to self-medication, we need to acknowledge some of the stuff going on in our lives and some of the pain we may be suffering. Denial of this, exacerbated by drug use, and the shit will hit the fan. We need to talk about and ultimately deal with stuff in our life, not self-medicate. Alcohol is our biggest societal drug of choice, there is a lot of literature and research suggesting how alcohol is dangerous to our body when misused. This usually focuses on the appropriate daily standard drinks consumption, links to various diseases such as cancer and then societal issues around binge drinking. On an individual level we need to work out if we can drink, and how do I behave when drinking (do I get angry and aggressive, take unnecessary risks). Because alcohol is a mood enhancer, we need to know what is our safe limit? Have regular alcohol-free days and not use it to self-medicate (when distressed) but enjoy it. The difficulty in life is choice, illicit and excessive use of drugs and alcohol is all our personal responsibility. What then can we do, as a society, about the misuse/abuse of drugs and alcohol? Primary care is standing up and saying no its not all right (culture). As a collective we can make a difference whether that is in the family, community group and/or workplace you are not alone. As peers we can make a difference whether it be in the school, workplace or footy club by saying no it’s not all right. We all have a right to a safe place!

Uniting Church Coraling Street When do you meet with God? One day, each of us will come face to face with God. That will be scary if God is a stranger to you, or worse, if you think of God as your enemy. The Bible tells us that some people would prefer a mountain to fall on them than to have to look at God face to face, which is odd because God is our loving Heavenly Father. So it is far better to meet God now, while we can choose when and where to meet him, than to wait until he comes looking for us. To start with, you could come to church. You might choose to come along when you are feeling good about yourself. You might scrub up well and put on your best clothes but you can come any time, just as you are, even when everything is going wrong and you don’t feel good about yourself. As we sing, pray, read from the Bible and listen to a sermon you might meet God – or you might not. I don’t know why some people come to church Sunday after Sunday and don’t meet with God. Sometimes people get little glimpses of God until they can make sense of it and they realise that God is there. For other people nothing may happen for months and then it happens all at once. Sometimes people even give up and walk away and then they meet God when they least expect to. For some people, Christianity is just a religion, a list of things that you do to please God. But my hope is that people will come to know Christianity as “a friendship with God”: meeting with God in prayer and reading the Bible and knowing that he is near every day. Then, when the time comes to see him face to face, we won’t be afraid, we will be glad. Rural Aid Article In your life: What has been the most beautiful place you have seen so far? What is the achievement that makes you the proudest so far? What is your most defining moment in life so far? Some people will be able to answer these questions fairly quickly. Some will not. Because of our uniqueness each answer will be different even if similar. But in each question asked, there is the same two last words, “so far”. How do you know that the most beautiful place you will ever see and what the best thing you will do is yet to be realised? At this point you have what is the best at this moment in time, you cannot say that there won’t be something better unless you can read your own future. Even later in life the same stands. During hard challenging times the same stands. Maybe the best is still yet to come. An unknown person quoted,’ Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.’ Every person has challenging times, times when we wonder if we will get through. Life is not easy and life in the future holds no promises. But the fact that we may also be yet to experience the best moment in our life is a great philosophy to help us get through hard times. We can ground ourselves and live in the moment, But it’s also important to have aspirations for our future even though not guaranteed. Reminding ourselves that life has also included some good times, beautiful places and happiness assists us to stop pause reflect. Hard times are nature’s way of pushing our reset button, to reset our priorities, move to get back to who we really are and to what is important to us personally. We can’t undo our past but we can learn from our past. Our past also lets us know that we have got through hard times before and will get through again. But this time we have knowledge gained from previous experience of what we need to do to get through. We know what works for us. If how we reacted at the time we now know is wrong we now know how not to react differently. When at the crossroads choose to take the path towards your true self not the path your negative thoughts want to go. Accept we are having negative thoughts because we know what has happened and what is challenging us. These protective emotional responses surface bringing thoughts of what may transpire. We do not dismiss these thoughts because our brain through our past hard times is now doing its best to protect you from harm now. The thoughts and emotions created are not always helpful, but we know why they are present. We have the freedom to choose how we react and can choose to take the path towards our true selves. This enables us to better able to control our emotional responses. If to difficult we can choose to ask for help. Knowing that asking for help is a strength and also what our loved ones would want us to do. We remind ourselves that we maybe yet to, in the future, experience the best moment in our life.
