Happy Spring! also tell us if you see wildflowers in bloom!

How ‘bout that power outage? Fun times. Devastated we weren't able to get a Passion Sheet done last week, just too many hurdles. Did you miss it? Or is there perhaps the opportunity to drop to a fortnightly Passion Sheet/ Banksia Bulletin hybrid? Have a stew and let us know what you think While on the power outages, check out page 9 for some info about the $120 payment you might be eligible for and how we can help you access it. Apologies if your Banksia Bulletin last month or the month before had a cheeky blank page or two, or ten. We’re tearing our hair out just a little bit trying to work out who/ what/ where/ when/ why/ how our beloved printer is doing this to us. We’ve turned it off and on again (90% of the time fixes the problem every time), had the printer serviced and fiddled with some print settings so fingers crossed you get a chock a block Banksia Bulletin this week (kindly let us know if you don’t though).

BANKSIA BULLETIN SEPTEMBER 2022

Please

I really hope you’re not missing pages, because there’s so dang much content in this month’s edition. Heaps of events to fill your September, an update from the Shire, and reports from the School, Child Care Centre and Photo Club among others. We’re especially excited about the Car Rally coming up on the 17th. 20+ years ago, a Car Rally was a regular fundraising activity for Quairading locals so we're bringing it back! From 12pm, teams will leave the starting point in 5 minute delays. A clue will be handed out as you depart which will help guide you to your next stop. At each stop there will be activities and challenges to complete, or answers to find, before receiving your next clue (The Amazing Race style!). There will be lifelines and bribery opportunities throughout if you struggle with the slightly cryptic clues that will certainly rely on a bit of local knowledge! This "rally" is not timed, is not a race and is certainly not too serious just some good fun, a great family afternoon out and an opportunity to learn about the area you live in. Find the rego form and terms and conditions on page 28. Included in this edition also, is an article/ not so subtle hint to those who still fall victim to the double space conspiracy. Fuelled by my frustration when I see a double space in typing, I’ve done some research and learnt that it’s not really your fault, it’s just how you were taught. For balance, I’ve included an article about ‘the millennial pause’ another already outdated habit that I’ve realised I’m very guilty of. I hope you at least have a laugh at one or either and ultimately decide that there’s probably no winners when it comes to flawlessly adapting to changes in technology so just carry on (and I’ll carry on editing out bonus spaces in anything you send us).

To the Shire of Quairading, Councillors and Jen Green. Jen did a fantastic job helping us to write up our grant application and thanks to the Councillors and Shire of Quairading we have now received funding to assist our business. We have been able to purchase a waterproof canopy for our cleaning trailer which means much easier access and not having to fight the rain trying to keep everything dry! We also have other great gear coming shortly, so this enables us to be in a better position to jump on board with the Shire’s Strategic Plan improving services for our Aged Care, and indeed the whole community. Kind regards Marzocchi Contracting.

COMMUNITYAPPLICATIONSGRANT Applications are now open for Round 2 of the Shire of Quairading’s Small Grants. $500 $2500 is available to non-for-profit community groups to assist funding equipment, events and activities. What’s happening at the fire station?

In the past, Western Power would provide hard copy claim forms, or make a PDF version available to download and print. In an attempt to streamline processes, Western Power (like many service providers) now only provide a interactive online form that can only be filled in and submitted from a computer or smart phone. We understand this can be frustrating when not all people have access to computers, internet or have the skills to navigate an online form. This is where the Quairading CRC is more than happy to help! We can provide access to a Public Computer (which is free for up to 15 minutes) for you to complete the form online yourself, or we can take care of the full application for you for a service fee of just $10 per household (for both claims combined in this instance). The fee we charge, like all fees for service, help to cover our overhead costs such as staff wages, rent, internet, equipment to make sure that our centre is a sustainable service that exists for years to come.

Jill Hayes | Coordinator Quairading CRC

Western Power administer the State Government’s $120 extended outage payment, which is a one off payment of $120 per any unplanned outage that lasts longer than 12 consecutive hours. The payment is an acknowledgement of the inconvenience for customers who have experienced a long unplanned outage while waiting for repairs to be completed and restoration of power to occur.

We have also gained some keen new members in the last year and we are looking forward to getting out and about more. If you have a community event that you would like us at, please let us know and we will be more than happy to sort something out.

BANKSIA BULLETIN SEPTEMBER 2022 PAGE 9

When you’re ready to complete the form, either by yourself or with our help, you’ll just need your meter number, basic contact information and your bank account name, BSB an account number where you’d like to funds paid to by Western Power. We’re always keen and willing to help our community with tasks like this one and hope to continue providing a valuable service to you.

Payment of successful claims will be made to your nominated account within 30 days.

The station is getting some TLC and will have nice new facilities to show off with an open day around Christmas, watch this space for updates! Both the VFRS and the Central BFB will remain fully operational during this time.

We have had reports of people entering the building site, please don’t as it’s not safe and it’s fenced off for a reason.

Please contact us on our email, quairadingvfrs@bigpond.com for more info about our upgrades or to get in touch with us about community events. We no longer have a phone number. All of our volunteers lead busy lives and we ask that you don’t approach individuals about community events, but please do email the station and we will get back to you promptly.

REED Quairading

The children at REED Quairading have been busy the last month with lots of learning through play. We have been using lots of colours and the children have been working on colour recognition. We have also been focusing on physical development and using songs such as "5 Grey Elephants" to practice our balancing Weskills.had an awesome sand/water play table donated to us by Quairading AFGRI which the children are enjoying. After discussing with the older children about respect for animals and how we can help, we have set up a basket and are asking for donations of food, blankets etc for animal shelters based in York and Northam. We have

August was a wonderful month for those of us who garden in the Wheatbelt; glorious rain and sunny days, sometimes all in the same day. It was cold at times but our gardens need those cold nights in winter either to sweeten veggies or to set fruit. Unlike our friends on the coast or further south we were spared the damaging winds, the hail and the flooding. Having seen some of the chaos these all caused to some beautiful gardens we can thank our lucky stars that we garden where we do. The September meeting of the QGLG will be held in the CWA hall on the 30th at 10am. Also I received an email from the organizer of the York Open Garden Day asking me to please advertise their day to those in our area who might like to see some beautiful gardens. The information is as follows: The York Open Garden Day will be held on Sunday, 16th October from 10am 3pm. There will be 5 private gardens open for inspection with vendors/stalls in each garden. There will be Devonshire Teas available for purchase in 2 of the gardens and a sausage sizzle in another 1. Entry is a gold coin donation to each garden and a map of the gardens will be available from The York Visitor Centre. Also if you care to order lunch for the day it can be pre ordered from a local café, ‘Gather York’ on 0455 670 868. Plant of the Month This month I simply could not walk past the beautiful display from these plants in our Mediterranean Garden. The plant I have chosen is Retama monosperma commonly known as the Bridal Veil. While I was researching information about it I found that in South Australia and in other parts of the east coast this plant is a declared weed because it spreads by seed into heath land. Now, my gardening knowledge comes from experience so I can safely recommend this plant in our area. Also as I bought it through the Diggers website and they are based over east it would not have been allowed into WA if it were a risk over here. The plant has many appealing features, perhaps the best being that it starts flowering in mid August when there isn’t a lot of colour in the spring gardens and it continues flowering well into late September. This weeping form of the Bridal Veil is from the Fabaceae family of plants, the pea and bean family. It is a broom or Genista and is the most drought tolerant of these plants. It originates from southern European areas like Portugal and Sicily which have our sort of climate; wet winters and dry hot summers. In our garden I’ve used it as a wind break against the easterlies in summer. It grows about 2 meters tall and 3 meters wide. In the first two years of growth I thought I would lose it to a moth caterpillar which denuded it of flowers and because it was planted on the outside of the garden the soil was quite poor. However, after the initial slow start it began to thrive and last spring it set seeds for the first time in six years. I sowed about thirty, in ideal conditions for them and only managed to germinate three, so I’m not worried about its weedy tendencies. Two more reasons to have this lovely plant in your garden are that it is a huge bee magnet and because its stems are bitter it won’t be attacked by foraging animals.

Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm

Plant There is just a very small window of opportunity to plant bare rooted trees and roses although these will need extra care in mid spring and early summer especially if we have hot days early in the season. Native shrubs and summer flowering plants can be put in now so that they have established roots by the time summer hits. I’d like to recommend Sedums, Aloes, Kalanchoes, Coreopsis, Gaura, Achillea and Red Hot Pokers, with a little extra water in summer all these should do well in our gardens.

The last word “to walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles” Mary Louis

It’s time to Sow Summer vegetables and flowering plants should be sown now. All the small seeded plants like tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, basil and salad vegetables should already be sown and by mid September the larger seeds like borlotti beans, cucumbers, all the melons, zucchini and pumpkins can be sown.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt

Harvest We are still harvesting lots of citrus, the asparagus bed is waking up, and as soon as I finish this article I will be going to the garden to pick the first of our pea crop. In the veggie beds we have English spinach, silver beet, broccollini, celery, cabbage, leeks, spring onions, lettuce, rocket, kale, capsicums, brussels sprouts (first time we have succeeded), endive, rhubarb, turnips, swedes, parsnips, radishes and carrots.

Things to do Invite city friends to visit this beautiful part of the state there is so much to show off, this will give you the incentive to do more weeding. Prune passion fruit vines to keep them at their best. Tip prune flowering native shrubs after their flowers have finished and give them some liquid native fertilizer. When you’re doing this tip pruning use some of the prunings as cuttings to multiply your plants. If you have a couch lawn mid September is fertilizing time, whereas if your lawn is a buffalo grass wait until October to fertilize it. But if nothing else gets done this month make sure you fertilize everything during September.

Other considerations are to watch the lighting, include a texture or a pattern, focus on the form, try a long exposure and to plan your photo to take a photo without post processing. When you take colour out of the equation your eye will be drawn to other detail including textures and patterns. Try to make these patterns interesting to feature in your image. Details like peeling paint and rusty metal will stand out beautifully in black and white.

Composition is a technical word that we use in photography to describe the techniques used to set up the elements of a picture. Composition are the techniques which resemble the way we humans normally see a view, which is what we photographers attempt to translate to form a perfect photographic picture. A composition of a Black and White photo contains plenty of beautiful texture and form that the photographer can use to draw attention to the main focal point of the photo without having the distraction of colour. Pics in the competition oozed elegance plus timeless classic beauty and simplicity that is not easily replicated with colour photography. Without colour in the photos we were left to rely on other elements like texture, tone, form and detail to create a powerful and striking image and forced us to think carefully about our composition. Some pics cleverly used concepts by blending smokey greys and misty whites creating contrasts to make that award winning pic. When composing our pics for a pic that is monochromatic (ie Black & White) we also look for tonal contrast using dark shades that contrast against lighter tones. Contrast is your best friend when it comes to Black and White photography. You have to get your contrast correct or your pic will look muddy. The more contrast used in the composition of photo, the sharper, more dramatic and interesting it will be. You should aim to make your subject stand out against the background.

Focus on form which means emphasising on an item in your pic. Without colour your attention will be drawn to form. A Black & White Monochromatic pic can capture form better than a colour photo. Try a long exposure, (which means slow shutter speed). This will blur movement in the pic like a river, resulting in a silky smooth river or streaky softly blurred clouds.

Written by Russell Stacey

If you look to capture mist, the mist will take on a surreal, almost ethereal quality and can result in a beautiful dream like photo which is the effect Ann Marie created in the First prize photo. If you take a Black & White pic of storm clouds, the dramatic light that streams through the clouds after a storm is also ideal for monochromatic imagery and smoke can have similar effect. So look for the chance to capture these opportunities in Black and White which is what Scott created in equal second place with a pic that had whispy smoke ,enhancing his pic.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the technical side of operating a camera and you understand what a switched on bunch of idiosyncratic members make up the Quairading Photo Club. We are all getting our pics ready for the forthcoming Quairading Ag Show, which this year has 3 new classes in the Photography section, being Astro, Wildflowers & Drone. Here is our reminder if you would like to come to our meetings please come along, just rock up. We meet at 7pm once a month on the 2nd Tuesday. This month at the Quairading CRC. You can join our Facebook group by searching Quairading Photo Club. Next month’s subject is “OIL AND WATER”.

These days post processing of a photo is common practice but the top scoring photos were a result of deliberate composition and planning at the time the photo was taken without too much post processing

Last month’s subject was Black and White. Black & White are actually not colours they are called neutral. When you open your eyes in the morning until you close your eyes at night you see the world in colour. This is what makes Black & White pics so interesting. Black and White pics create a strange dreamscape that colour never can. In other photo competitions around the place Black & White pics come under the class of Monochromatic. At the Quirky Quairading Photo Club Black & White pics are referred to as 52 Shades of Grey. Last month pics in the competition gave us a chance to use all the technical aspects we have learnt at Photo Club over the years to create our pics. We used what is referred to as composition, form, focal point, contrast, tones, texture, patterns & lots of other fancy photographic jargon.

The message we give in everything we do is … before it all gets too much… Talk to a As human beings we are fundamentally social in nature, staying connected and feeling valued for who we are is of primary importance to us. Talking to other people about issues in our lives or telling our stories helps us to normalise our experiences and realise we are not alone in having them. As blokes we tend to retreat into ourselves when things are turning pear shaped (cave time), much to the frustration of most women. This is the normal way men tend to start processing their Metaphoricallyproblems.stepping into the cave can be helpful to get a handle on things but it is important that we are able to acknowledge and recognise when it is time to step back out and seek the support we need. Having a plan already in place that identifies who the mates are that we can turn to is important. Without a network of true mates, we become susceptible to feelings of isolation and loneliness. As blokes we can recognise three main categories from where we find and establish real mateship. These exist usually in the forms of a partner (intimate relationship), a peer (someone around the same age that perhaps has a similar experience of lifestyle and activities to us) and a mentor (an older person whose lived experience we place value upon). A real mate is more than just an associate, it’s someone that knowingly respects and values who we are and is willing to make the time to genuinely listen to us. Think about who you would classify as a mate; and about the blokes you know who perhaps have few or none of these categories in their lives? Often it is said that blokes in general don’t really like to talk about stuff and if we disclose that we have a few problems someone will exploit our problem or weakness, but the reality is quite different. Given the right environment, where we feel safe most men will willingly share their story and talk about issues that matter to them and there is real value in realizing that there are other men experiencing the same things (no matter what the issue).

Nothing Says Over 40 Like Two Spaces after a Full Stop! 12,2014byJenniferGonzelazonwww.cultofpedagogy.com

Word processors and computers and everything that is not a very old typewriter use mostly proportionally spaced fonts, which adjust spacing to the size of the letter. That’s why a proportional font can squeeze 12 letters into the same space where a monospace font can only fit nine: If you do even a little bit of research on this topic, you’ll find plenty of articles practically begging you to stop using two spaces. Slate‘s

BANKSIA BULLETIN SEPTEMBER 2022 PAGE 55

(Before I start, I should mention that I am over 40.) I learned to type in 1987 on an IBM Selectric typewriter. A typewriter, not a computer. We had those, but they had big, actually floppy disks and honest to God, no one had any idea what to do with them. My semester of typing remains one of the most valuable classes I ever took in high school I can still dazzle small children with my ability to make words appear on a screen by just hysterically wiggling my fingers on the keyboard. But one rule from typing class has definitely expired, and if you’re over 40, it’s possible that no one has given you the message. Here it is: Unless you are typing on an actual typewriter, you no longer have to put two spaces after a period. Or a question mark. Or an exclamation point. The rule applies to all end punctuation. Just one space. Really. Yes, really. Here’s why: Back when we used typewriters, every character was given the exact same amount of space on the page. That meant the letter i was given the same amount of space as the letter m, even though it clearly didn’t need it.

Farhad Manjoo went so far as to say that it is totally, completely, utterly, and inarguably Butwrong.these articles are not reaching everyone, probably because for many of us who learned to type before computers, it was hammered into our heads over and over and OVER again to use two spaces. We got our papers marked wrong if we didn’t. It takes a long time to unlearn that. And until you unlearn it, you’ll probably force this funky old rule on your own students. I know I did: I remember sitting in a computer lab in 1998, going through my students’ papers, marking all the places where they needed to add an extra space after the period. It wasn’t until 1999, when I got a copyediting job with the New England Journal of Medicine, that I learned the “new” rule. When you know better, you do better. I love you, fellow middle aged folks, but it’s time we all join the modern age and spend just a little less time leaning on the space bar. That is all.

This is called monospaced typesetting and it’s, well, spacey. We needed that extra space between sentences to make it easier to see the beginning of new sentences.

But Are Millennials Really Too Old To Be On Social Media?

According to a viral article, millennials are aging out of the internet and the biggest evidence is in the “millennial pause”. But what is the millennial pause, and does it really signal and end of an era for millennials on the internet? What Is The “Millennial Pause”?

“Different generations always develop specific ways of belonging to their social group through communications technologies we have seen this historically in teenage telephone use, the production of mix tapes, and now in multi screen game and streaming use,” says Martin.

Associate Professor Martin told Junkee that different generations have always used technology in unique ways that are defined by more than just age. “Rather than millennials ‘aging out’ of social media, what we have seen over the last decade is different commentary cultures (cultures of social media sharing) developing based on a whole range of factors including people’s age, gender, national, racial and ethnic backgrounds,” she says.

Published in The Atlantic, the original article by Kate Lindsay points to a plethora of tics and mannerisms millennials do online that have fallen out of fashion. Specifically, mannerisms displayed by millennials on TikTok that Gen Z TikTokers make fun of. These tics include random zoom ins to emphasise talking points, a way of talking termed the “BuzzFeed accent,” using random filters, using phrases popularised on Twitter and Instagram like “doggo” and “I can’t even” and “adulting” and the latest crime… the millennial

BANKSIA BULLETIN SEPTEMBER 2022 PAGE 56

Lindsay sites a handful of mannerisms outside of TikTok too. Millennial tics like using gifs as reactions, and turning social media bios into lists that include everything from every town they’ve lived in, to their Hogwarts house.

term millennial pause was first coined in a TikTok about Taylor Swift. TikTok user @nisipisa stitched a TikTok with Swift, exclaiming excitedly that not even she is immune to the cringe inducing pause. “God! Will she ever stop being relatable,” @nisipisa says. Indeed there is now a whole genre of TikTok dedicated to Gen Z roasting millennial internet mannerisms. Parodies of how millennials tell stories, how millennials behave on live feeds, what it sounds like when millennials try and use so called Gen Z slang (most of which is actually just badly appropriated AAVE), and even reacting to the inherent millennial cringe worthiness of Nick Jonas‘ TikToks.

ArticlepublishedAuust15,2022byMerryanaSalemonwww.junkee.com

Thepause.millennial pause, as Lindsay defines it, is the split-second millennials wait before they start talking in a video to intuitively circumvent recording delay. The pause, Lindsay posits, is a technical hangover from using older technology that did not start recording instantly. Moreover, while millennials may be accustomed to documenting their lives in photos, the millennial pause is an indicator of discomfort with recording videos absent from those generally made by Gen TheZ.

University of Sydney Associate Professor of Online and Convergent Media Discipline, Fiona Martin, says, “some millennials who use social media for comms work will follow cultural trends, and those that don’t won’t. Mocking them for being dated is a social differentiation tactic”.

Associate Professor Martin also emphasised that suggesting millennials are all the same is a faulty premise for any argument. “This article talks about millennials as if they were a homogenous group. It’s a very Anglo perspective that doesn’t take account of subcultures within age groups, or the diversity of ethnic groups.”

As an example of how different ethnic groups within the same generation use social media, Martin pointed to the research in Bronwyn

Contrary to the general tone of Lindsay’s article, however, it’s not all doom and gloom for those over the age of 25 online. It isn’t even as simple as millennials “aging out” of the internet.

Why Are People Talking About The Millennial Pause?

BANKSIA BULLETIN SEPTEMBER 2022

The reality is that generational “wars” are more often than not, bloated marketing schemes. The fact folks can barely agree on which years apply to which “generation” should be a giveaway on how much of an inexact science generational claims are founded on (near zero science, by the Youway).can change your behaviour online in the vain hope that when a person under 25 makes fun of a so called millennial stereotype, you can gleefully think you’re the exception. Or you can remind yourself that worrying about getting older has historically failed to make anyone any younger.

The millennial pause isn’t a harbinger of doom for the online millennial. At most, it’s a tic associated with a section of a demographic on a certain platform. Perhaps we’d all be a little better off if we remembered that every generation, as with every person, contains multitudes. Aging and the tics and mannerisms that come with it is not a sign that you’re aging out of anything. It’s a privilege and a gift to age and, as Abe Simpson so wisely pointed out, “it will happen to you”.

It’s common for generations to punch down on one another as a means to define their identity.

The alternative is to accept, as AP Fiona Martin says, every generation uses technology differently and no generation is a monolith. Even within generations factors such as class, location, occupation and ethnicity impact how we use technology and interact with one another.

Carlson and Ryan Frazer’s book, Indigenous Digital Life. “Many Indigenous Australians are aware of being surveilled online, and so tend to circulate positive inspiring content in response,” she explains.

In short, you can if you want. There is a whole genre of TikToks specifically dedicated to millennials teaching other millennials how to show their age less online. From how to update your wardrobe, to how to hold your phone, to just general ways you can avoid being “caught out” as a millennial it’s all out there.

Besides, if it were true that the internet or social media only belongs to the young, how do you explain the popularity of TikTok accounts like @grandma_droniak, @oldgays, our very own Gumbaynggirr Burrgadi aunty @ballojinda, or everyone’s TikTok grandpa @poppopbrucejohnson.
