You’re in for a treat with this September edition of the Banksia Bulletin. There are sports reports galore, another great two page spread from the Shire, updates from local groups, party invites and more. Sure there’s a couple of regular contributors missing, but their absence will just make your heart grow fonder for them next month! Next Friday evening we’re hosting another Art Class with Charlie Colbung here at the Quairading CRC. I highly recommend booking a spot and coming along and I promise you don’t need to bring any artistic skills with you, probably just a smidge of interest and Charlie’s step-by-step guidance will do the rest! Pro top: if you’re really rubbish at it, Charlie will likely step in and “help” you out so much that you pretty well end up with a Charlie Colbung original to take home. This was my “strategy” at a pottery workshop earlier this year. Was it intentional? No. Did it work? Yes. Let us know if you’d like to come along—details on page 13. Nominations for our local Shire Council open and close in the next couple of weeks. With four vacancies, some new nominations are needed! Believe me, I’d love to do it—but my time outside of work at the Quairading CRC is already pretty well allocated to a bunch of ripper local clubs. So I’m going to be that person who says “someone else should do it”, which absolutely isn’t a helpful attitude. So go on, be a better community member than me and stick your hand up for a spot on Council! Did that work? If you happen to find yourself with some spare time in the coming weeks: Go watch some sport Many of our winter sports teams are excelling on the field this finals season. Don your red and white and get along to show your support to the hockey gals and footy boys. Spectating is wildly nerve-wracking, but screaming your positive support at the top of your lungs is wildly soothing—and might be just what the Bulls and Bullettes need to get over the line! Go see the wildflowers Those above average rainfall events over the past few months have given life to flowers and plants not seen in many years, apparently. The Nature Reserve, particularly around Nookaminnie Rock, Toapin Weir and the Golf Course are all fabulous places for a stroll and an explore. Be sure to minimise the impact of your foot steps where possible and take only photos home with you. Go camping or picnicking September strikes that perfect balance of it *generally* not being wet, and still being campfire season. If you don’t happen to have a friend with some property, make use of the great fire/camping areas at Toapin Weir or Kwolyin Campsite! Go spring cleaning Pass! Happy Spring! Warrior Wellbeing What is Loss and Grief? Grief is a universal, instinctual and an adaptive reaction to loss, particularly the grief from the loss of a loved one. Feelings of loss are very personal and only we know what is significant. Less obvious losses can also cause strong feelings of grief such as loss of possessions, job, relationship, health or physical ability.
Grief comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, we’re drowning, surrounded by wreckage reminding us of the ship that was and is no more, and all we can do is float. As we float we hang onto a piece of wreckage for a while in the form of a physical thing (a memory or photograph), it may even be another person floating with us, and for a while all we can do is Loss is an inevitable part of life and grief is a float. If we feel we are not coping, we need to seek professional help from our GP or a counsellor.
The length of the grief process is different for everyone. It takes time to heal and this may not be just days it can be weeks, months and even years. Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Well we asked for a little more sunshine and the last couple of weeks provided just that and although there has also been a good amount of rain; spring is certainly on its way. In our garden the almond trees are the harbingers of spring and they have been flowering beautifully for the last two weeks of August. This is such a glorious time of year to enjoy the garden and the fields of various grains. Each has it colour and green hew which make the tapestry varied and more interesting, I’m sure the expert eye can tell which grain it is in each field. The September meeting of the QGLG is on Friday 24th at 10am. This month there will also be a workshop on Grafting Fruit Trees on the 10th September at 10am at Eaglewood Farm cost is $5 for non members, please text 0403 153 661 to RSVP. Morning tea provided. Also September is Kings Park Festival month with activities on throughout the month showcasing the wonderful wild flowers of our state. Plant of the Month – this month’s plant is one of my favourite plants in the garden. It’s a favourite for its durability, its colour and its hardiness. The common name is Shrimp Plant and its botanical name is Justicia brandegeeana. It hails from Mexico and therefore suits our climate very well. Like most plants it doesn’t like wet feet but will tolerate our cold winters and even a mild frost won’t set it back too badly. It is a multi stemmed plant which grows to about 45 centimeters. It keeps its crimson blooms forever it seems and just adds to them in autumn after the first rains of the season. The Shrimp Plant tolerates our hot summers very well with only one watering per week. It is quite easy to propagate by cuttings in spring. Simply take cuttings with about four sets of leaves, dip cutting into hormone powder, put into moist potting mix which has perlite added to it, cover with a plastic bag and leave it in a well lit place out of direct sunlight. It should have roots forming in six to eight weeks.
Plant – now asparagus crowns and artichoke plants and then towards the third week of September when the soil has started to warm up a little is a good time to put in sweet potato slips and all manner of flowering plants and vegetable seedlings.
Harvest – at present we are still harvesting mandarins, oranges, cumquats, lemons, citrons, and limes. Quairading Junior Netball 2021 Quairading Junior Netball for 2021 has been another busy season with lots of opportunities for our players to play netball in Quairading, Beverley, Cunderdin, Kellerberrin and Tammin. Quairading Golf Club Written by Rohan Hadlow, Mens Captain It's been a busy month on the golfing scene with many big events being on the calendar. The boys have been travelling far and wide, to many open days around the countryside with some even bringing home a trophy or two. On the 31st of July we held our own open day, the Dolin Cup/ North Quairading Contractors 4ball. We had 69 men participate across the two events and it was great to see the clubhouse with so many people in it! Infrastructure Australia funds are intended to revitalise Wheatbelt WA area and towns, more long term job and business opportunity in rural areas and increase population.

Tier 3 area, now with no rail open, produces about the same tonnages (2014 tonnages 1.7 million tonnes), as the area north of the standard gauge where 6 rail lines service similar production area.

Presently $178 million available with ($22 million of $200 m, already allocated). This is an opportunity we should welcome and grasp, without hesitation. We congratulate Rita Saffioti for her interest in the area.

It is more than disappointing not to have CBH support for T3, particularly when they were previously so keen to operate Tier 3 rail lines (Feb 2103 article).

New Anglican Priest in Quairading On Thursday, 29th July members of the Anglican Parish of St Faith, Quairading, gathered to welcome the Rev’d Canon Dr Philip Raymont as their Priest-in-Charge. Earlier that week in Holy Trinity Church, York, Philip had been commissioned as the Priest-in-Charge for not only the Anglican parishes of York and Quairading, but also Beverley-Brookton. This is a new initiative of the Anglican Diocese of Perth as it seeks to provide full-time ordained ministry in the rural parts of the Diocese. Under the new arrangements Philip will conduct regular services in each of the main centres, along with St John’s in the Wilderness Church, The Dale, St Paul’s Church, Edward’s Crossing, and St Andrew’s Church, Green Hills. As well as conducting worship he will visit each of the towns, and other places in the different Shires, each week. He expects that while it might be difficult to ensure walking 6,000 steps each day, he should have no problem in building up the number of kilometres travelled! Philip is no stranger to the region, for over the last three and half years or more he has been conducting monthly Eucharists at St Mary’s Church, Beverley and St Mark’s Church, Brookton. For the last twelve years he has been the Senior Chaplain and Head of Religion, Philosophy & Ethics, at Guildford Grammar School in Perth. Given that background there are likely to be members of the Shire with a connection to that school; indeed, anyone of the six Perth Anglican Boarding schools. Philip is not unfamiliar with rural living having grown up on mixed dairy and intensive agricultural farms in the Lockyer Valley between Toowoomba and Ipswich in Queensland; following his father’s premature death in 1979 he operated for over five years the family farms with his father’s brother. Philip is an historian of education by academic scholarship; having written two school histories, several articles in peer-reviewed journals of History and History of Education; having been admitted to his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Cambridge, Philip taught in the Faculty of Education there. Before travelling to the United Kingdom, Philip had led residential university colleges at the Northern Territory University, University of New England, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Queensland. Within the life of the Diocese of Perth he is Chair of the Board, Wollaston Theological College; Chair, Archbishop’s Examining Chaplains’ Committee; a Canon of St George’s Cathedral; a member of the Perth Committee of the Anglican Board of Mission; a member of the Diocesan Rural Ministry Task Force. Amongst his hobbies and pastimes, he maintains particular interest in cultural and sporting events, having already attended Quairading football and netball teams play in very wet, windy and cold conditions recently, and enjoyed Miss Westralia at the Beverley Town Hall. Uniting Church Coraling Street This month the Gospel readings have been centered around Jesus and His discussions about bread. He first feeds over 5000 people from a small amount of food. Indicating the need to be fed. The people thought He was special and wanted to know what they should do to do the works of God. Please collect meals from hospital kitchen at 11:45am and return eskies as soon as possible. There will be a tester meal with the delivery on most days, please be aware of this and ensure it is not given to any clients. 41/2 litres of petrol is available to each driver to help cover costs.
