Remember when all the things got cancelled, and you could work from home and basically just stay home?

Yeah that’s over. But thank goodness—because really, that could become quite a lonely life I’m sure.

With spring well and truly in the air, you better get some in your step and get ready for what looks like a ripper September.

First and foremost—if you’re not planning at least one stroll in the Quairading Nature Reserve (or in your own patch of bush) to at least have a brief look at the wildflowers already sprouted, and the everlastings due to burst in the coming days and weeks—I’m sorry, but you’re doing it wrong. Go on, get the out there!

Tickets for the upcoming Fervor dinners are moving quickly which is very exciting. This event is once again attracting HEAPS of first time visitors to Quairading. If fine-dining in unique locations is your jam, we’d love to have you come along and help us welcome all of these visitors to our community. Or, if you happen to have a spare bedroom or two (preferably in a house in town) and might be interested in playing Bed & Breakfast host to some out-of-town visitors—pretty please get in contact with myself and I’ll put you in touch with a few keen visitors we have knocking on the door!

I hope you’ll take the time to read through all the other events going on this month and next, jot down the ones that take your fancy and RSVP where appropriate (which is appropriate everywhere right now, because #COVID). One of the funnest (I know, not a word) and most family friendliest of events next month is the ASTRONOMY NIGHT(!) on Thursday 17th September. Burgers, space talk and looking through big telescopes—I’m excited. Let us know if you and your tribe are planning on coming along so we can be sure to prep enough burgers for dinner (which will be available for $5 each at the event!).

PLAQUE UNVEILING The Quairading RSL Sub-branch and the York Sub -Branch of the National Servicemen’s Association are to conduct a dedication and unveiling of a plaque to honour the National Servicemen who served in the two call ups of 51 -59 and 65-72 from our Shire.

The service will be held at the Shire Memorial in Quairading on Sunday 20 September 2020 at 11am.

At completion of the Service a light luncheon/ social will be held at the Quairading Club.

All are welcome to attend the service.

WHEN DO WE BULK BILL Patients holding Commonwealth Pension and Veteran’s Health Cards are bulk billed for appointments.

When you receive a call from us to return to discuss results, all patients will be bulk billed for their appointment.

When you receive a recall letter from us, all patients will be bulk billed for their appointment.

When you return for follow-up appointments for on-going conditions, all patients will be Bulk Billed for their appointment.

When you are recalled for any of the above reasons and being bulk billed, if you have a new nonrelated medical concern you wish to discuss with the GP you will need to make a separate appointment.

All commercial driver licence medicals are privately billed for all patients regardless of relevant health cards. The reason being that Commercial driver licence medicals attract GST. Medicals for a third party are privately billed with the exception of Centrelink.

Skin clinic appointments for the procedure are bulk billed with a fee to ALL patients of $10 for the cost of the first liquid nitrogen visit and $5.00 for subsequent visits for the same lesion/s. New lesions will again attract a fee of $10.00 Additional charges attached to both Bulk Billing and Private fees for ALL patients.

Private fees and bulk billing apply to the consultation.

Consumables are items we must purchase for use during a patient’s visit and this cost must be covered by the patient with or without a Commonwealth concession card and is payable at time of consult. The cost of the consumable to private patients will be billed as a separate item at the time of your consult as it is not covered by Medicare or private health fund.

Examples of consumables which attract a separate fee for ALL patients include, but not limited to; Ear irrigation (ear syringe) $10.00 Spirometry (testing of lung capacity) $5.00 Pregnancy testing (including Lady Doctor Visits) $10.00 Removal of Foreign Body from eye (using Algerbrush burr) $15.00 INR (Testing Warfarin levels) $5.00 Liquid Nitrogen $10.00 first visit, $5.00 subsequent visit for same lesion/s.

It’s a wrap!

Quairading based film company Fractured Visions Films are pleased to announce that our feature film High Strangeness is finished. It has been a long, but worthwhile process. The film will show some familiar faces around town, including Britt Hadlow who plays the leading lady, Ethan Gors, Brock Macdonald, Benjamin Yardley, Amity and Nyssa Sheffler – Russell just to name a few, plus some Perth actors.

So, what is next? The final work print is now being sent off to LA for approval, then we finalise the screener for the distribution company. The current world lock down has strangely been beneficial to Australian cinema, especially Western Australian films. With little, if any, new content from overseas available to viewers, it has put us in a very good place. Fractured Visions also completed a series of ten documentaries for The Wheatbelt Health Network for the Disability Inclusion in Schools and Communities program. The Quairading Vintage Club Machinery Rally Written by Russell Stacey With the postponement of the Quairading Ag Show a window of opportunity opened for the Quairading Vintage Club to hold a Machinery Rally during springtime on the day of the postponed show.

The Vintage Club had been preparing to have a bigger than usual display for this year’s 2020 show, displaying a large range of items celebrating the last 100 years of Agriculture. We had been inviting exhibitors to bring their vintage items from other towns for the 2020 show. With no show this year this instigated the idea of having a Machinery Rally Day and get the Quairading community together for a day out – while keeping in line with the COVID restrictions. We are having a Quairading community day out for all to enjoy and also do something that will be low cost to organise; with the bonus of the local community having a money earner.

The event will have a focus on displays of vintage farming machinery dating back to 100 years old. Lots of the tractors at the Vintage Club will be on display and they will be having a big day out when they are driven in the Grand Parade. We want farmers to bring their classic toys to this event so we can have a line-up of 100 years of farming. Visitors coming back to Quairading will get a buzz from seeing the Quairading machinery from the past. If you have an item you want to display that is in your farm machinery shed, let the Vintage Club know and we can work out how it can be displayed. We will be storing items in town prior to the day.

We have also invited numerous Rev Head clubs who will be attending featuring all types of cars, utes, motorbikes, trucks and more that will be both old & new.

Little Louie the world’s smallest road train will be there and rides will be for free.

The day will open at 10am and when the sun goes down The Robinson Brothers Band from York will be performing in the shed and Dad’s Bar will be open into the evening.

Of course the Vintage Club can’t buzz around flat out organising a day like this. We have organised with the P&C , sporting clubs & catering businesses to help out providing food and drinks Rest A While Coffee Van will be there, the School P & C will be fundraising & providing food on sale at lunch time. Scrumptious afternoon tea will be on sale by the 3 time Grand Final winners the Quairading Ladies Hockey Club and Wendy & J9 will have the Flavour Town Catering van there for evening food. We have organised the footy club lads to run Dad’s Bar and it will open early doors. They will be doing the bar organising, which is something we don’t have to coordinate and will use this event as a fundraiser for the Footy Club.

We would greatly appreciate any volunteer helpers for set up and then clean up on Sunday.

Just pop into the Vintage Club around 10am for a cuppa and have a discussion to see how you can volunteer for this Machinery Rally. We will need some drivers to get the machinery to the show grounds and helpers in the display area on the day of this event.

WILDFLOWER TRACKER - WHERE TO FIND THE FLOWERS Western Australia is home to an exceptional array of over 12,000 species of wildflowers – almost two-thirds are unique to Western Australia. The blooms carpet the landscape with colour, coming into bloom in the northern parts of the state in June and flourishing through till late spring in the southern parts of WA. It is a special time to experience the extraordinary colours of WA and to help you find the flowers the Western Australian Visitors Centre is once again running our Wildflower Tracker of the current sightings.

What we learnt

from Conversation with a Councillor On Thursday 13th August, the Quairading CRC held an event titled ‘Conversation with a Councillor’ at the Community Building. With all Shire of Quairading Councillors present, and a diverse mix of locals, it made for an excellent conversation.

This was just the first in an ongoing series of ‘Conversation with a Councillor’ events with a plan to hold them every six months, trialling different evenings of the week, to hopefully make them as accessible to as many different community members as possible. The aim of these events is to provide a platform for an open conversation between council and community and to encourage even more ongoing sharing of ideas and updates.

For the benefit of those who couldn’t make it to the first conversation, here’s a summary of what we learnt through the discussion: 

The Shire of Quairading has been successful in receiving $1million of ‘drought funding’ which will be spent on various projects over the next 12 months that boost economic development, including: changes to the main street carpark to allow easier access for vehicles including caravans, road resurfacing and reroofing in Arthur Kelly Village, hockey oval lighting, solar system to run the Swimming Pool, render and paint the outside of the town hall, repair ceiling inside Town Hall, upgrades at Youth Centre building, remove The Cottage and replace with new Caravan Park Caretakers Cottage and adding single person quarters to Caravan Park.



The best thing to do with feedback, comments and concerns regarding any Shire / Council service, including the Medical Practice, is to email them to shire@quairading.wa.gov.au



Monthly Council meetings are open to the public

Other discussion was held around the topics of 

Education and employment opportunities being the basis for attracting new residents, and maintaining current population



Drought Communities Programme An update from Shire of Quairading

The Drought Communities Programme (DCP) was announced by the Prime Minister in November 2019. It aims to provide financial support to rural communities in the most drought-affected regions of Australia. The funding is available for local infrastructure projects and other drought-relief activities and is intended to provide support by boosting local employment and procurement while also addressing social and community needs.

We are very pleased that Quairading has been successful in our application for $1million under the Programme. Council has nominated ten projects to complete with this grant money. These are projects that have been on the to-do list for some time but were ultimately selected as they needed to be completed within the 12-month timeframe and are not easily funded from elsewhere.

Work that you will see happening around town in the next 12 months includes: 1. Main Street Layover Bay – reconfiguring the secondary parking of the shopping precinct to allow eastbound traffic to pull over and shop in Quairading.

2. Town Hall Refurbishments – adding render to the current brick sections on the 1970s addition and a full paint job inside and out.

3. Youth Centre Refurbishments – needed upgrades to kitchen and ablutions, general repairs and painting 4. Solar Voltaic System at the Pool – installing solar panels on the roof of the Pool Buildings to reduce overall running costs for Council 5. Hockey Lighting – adding an additional lighting tower over the hockey training pitch at the Oval 6. Replacement Cabins at the Caravan Park –basic single rooms to replace the now demolished Barracks. Design to complement the Cabins but guests will use the shared ablution block.

7. Caretaker Cottage – on-site accommodation for a Manager of the Caravan Park including residence and office reception.

8. Road Access and Kerbing at Arthur Kelly Village – renewal and refurbishment 9. Roofing Arthur Kelly Village – renewing the roofs of all four villas with Colorbond sheeting 10. Adverse Event Plan – required element of the funding programme to put some longterm plans in place for future hardships

These projects have been allocated to various Shire staff members in both the Works and Grants teams and will be completed alongside other Capital Works such as the Community Park and major road upgrade Works. With the paperwork now complete, you will begin to see things happening very soon. Watch this space for future updates as the work progresses.

RCR Training Session Written by Tracey Patton

On Sunday 16th August, Quairading VFRS and St John Quairading volunteers got together for an RCR training session.

I would like to thank Peter Hudson and Trevor Sandercock for passing on the vast amount of knowledge they have. There were lots of questions asked and answered along with lots of discussion. We all learnt from each other.

We all enjoyed the day and we will be sure to have another get together sometime in the future. A big thank you to all volunteers that attended to make the day the success it was.

Watercolour & Wine ‘No mistakes, only happy accidents’

For the past few years the Quairading CRC have hosted a well-attended ‘Cabernet and Canvas’ evening, this year however, not wanting to succumb to monotony, we switched the art medium to water colours... and kept the wine. Thus was birthed ‘Watercolour and Wine’, jokes aside, the event was actually a very different experience and attracted a new crop of budding artists, as well as some *experienced* previous attendees.

Emilie Otto, director of Sketch Society– Art Studio & Events, guided us through this beginner friendly workshop, imparting her knowledge, skills and techniques. I’ve a sneaky suspicion Emilie graduated from the school of Rob Ross, and she set the tone from the beginning by implementing a ‘no negative self-talk’ policy.

Hungry bellies were dealt with early, satiated with a Quairading CRC home cooked Mexican spread, we sat down to begin experimenting with different techniques; observing the different behaviours of the water paints when they contact the cotton paper depending on the amount of water used.

We were provided with some images of different flora for inspiration and once we were confident with basic techniques were allowed to continue uninhibited on our own, keeping the Rob Ross slogan close to heart ‘there are no mistakes, only happy accidents.’

The class is now over so I can openly bag my work, I personally lacked any skill with this art form BUT I still rather enjoyed myself so can only assume that the rest of the class (who excelled) had a blast, with some even talking about taking it on as a new past time.

Huge thanks to Emilie for travelling out to Quairading and for being a dream to work with on the night and in the lead up. Emilie recently became the owner of a new business House of Hobbies expanding her workshops from watercolours to all sorts of other arts and craft.

Dangin Cricket Club Written by Vincent Hadlow

#Records do not include finals or pre-WW2. Not enough ink in my pen!

As mentioned in the last Banksia Bulletin, next year celebrates 100 years since the Dangin CC began playing cricket at the famous Dangin Sports Ground. Dangin cricket may have been going longer but we can only go with the known facts. And the fact is that Dangin played their first official game at the “home of cricket” in 1922. Which makes next year 100 years!! Give or take a couple of years.

I reckon my wonderful old grandfather Les would have played in those first seasons with Dangin. After coming home from WW1 he started farming in 1920 in Dangin. The family had lived in Dangin pre-WW1 so he would’ve played as a younger lad. If they played!

Which I’m guessing they did. But I don’t know where or who against! I have his record from after 1945 which suggests that he would have been a fine allrounder in his day. From 1945 until 1947 (when he was nearly 50 years Many talented players have graced the old) he played in 23 matches for Dangin, hallowed fields of the DCC. Many untalented made 316 runs, HS 43, av. 13.1, took 10 players have graced the scorebooks under the catches and took 15 wickets @10.8 with his Dangin CC title. But they’ve all had a great best bowling 6/22. The W.G. Grace of the time. If nothing more than for the enjoyment DCC? of a couple of big “harrys” (aristotles for the uneducated – beer bottles for totally Colin Walker was a magnificent cricketer for ignorant!) after the game under the shade of many seasons. (1945-62, 158 matches, 3251 the salmon gums that surrounded the DCC runs HS 99no, av. 26, 32 catches and 142 pitch and playing field. The pitch and the wickets @12.8, BB 8/8). Interestingly, there trees are still there in Dangin for all to see. is no record of him scoring a century for And I’ll bet they could tell a story or two.

Incredible at 13.8, BB 6/25), who was Dangin’s official celebrations under the salmon gums that scorer, used to put a weekly article in the day!!!

Jim Parker was a formidable cricketer. His record (1945-75; 264 matches, 4305 runs I am fortunate enough to have every game @20.5, HS 90, 54 catches and 341 wickets @ that Dangin played in the Quairading CA 13.1, BB 8/23) suggests all of that. Jim was a (1952-86) with the exception of the 1963-64 fast bowler and a fine striker of the ball. In season – plus a few from earlier on. Jim’s “partner in crime” was Syd Hadlow. Syd was an opening bowler until he took up leg spinning later in his career. He could also put on useful runs when required. His record suggests him being a very handy cricketer.

1945-78. 389 matches, 6133 runs@19.4, HS 93 and 151 catches. He took 703 wickets @14.1 and his BB was 8/18. With Jim, in that memorable 1957-58 finals’ series, he made 162 runs with a top score of 59, took one catch and tallied 13 wickets. In fact, he and Jim made 441 out of 847 total runs made in the finals for Dangin, and they took 30 out of the 37 wickets Dangin took during that premiership campaign. I reckon the salmon gums are still trembling with ecstacy!

Syd’s younger brother Eddie played from 1952-87. He was a very determined batsman who the opposition found difficult to dismiss.

After 554 games he amassed 10964 runs averaging 20.3 with a highest score of 111 not out. He took 193 catches, many of them as a wicketkeeper, and made 43 stumpings.

In between he managed to take 231 wickets @ 18.4 with his slow swinging deliveries.

runs @10, took 41 catches, 15 wkts @11.4. BB 2/4. A fine family effort.

And who could forget Lester Strickland. A stalwart of the DCC from 1945-70. 119 matches, 1030 runs @ 11 (and 29 catches) as a resolute opening batsman. Superb contribution. Brother Frank played from 1945 -64 for 51 games making 481 runs and taking 24 catches.

Ron Anderson was a wonderful opening bowler and useful batsman. He only played 79 games but made 824 runs @11.4 and took 31 catches. He also took 73 wkts at 13 with his best figures – 8/34. His brother Jack, or “Tiny”, played 162 games between 1945-73 and made 1080 runs @ 9 and took 50 catches with a HS of 38.

Allan Boyle was a captain of Dangin during his playing time from 1960-71. He played 135 games, made 779 runs and took 34 catches.

Brian Johnston (49 matches, 271 runs), Don Woods (68 games, 754 runs @ 11), Max Henderson (32 games, 182 runs), Gordon Falconer (59 matches -252 runs and 14 wkts) And brother Bob Hadlow. From 1947-58 he and Dixie Betts (36 games for a modest 49 played in 80 matches, made 470 runs @ 8, runs) were all regular players during the took 16 catches, 19 wickets @13, BB 4/15 and halcyon early years of the Dangin Cricket would have celebrated several times under Club. The Baty boys, Eric, Bill and Fred the salmon gums with a couple of renditions played regularly just after WW2 and Claude of some old army songs before his short walk Hadlow (52-54, 32 games, 92 runs), Laurie home!

Adamson (45-54, 17 matches for a “modester” 14 runs) and John O’Shea (58-62, Murray “Mo” Fisher played 136 matches 50 games, 312 runs, 18 wkts) were between 1952-74. He made 617 runs, took 48 dependable players for the club in those catches and took 185 wkts @ 5.06. His BB was early days as well.

Weird season of footy hey?!

While we hung in there for a few months, partaking in pre-season fundraising activities, keeping up training and fitness inline with changing regulations and carrying on with what we could as a committee—the 2020 Avon Football Association season was cancelled on 18th June.

Following that, Quairading nominated a team to compete in a proposed COVID league, with the WACFL extending invites to any clubs in the Avon, Mortlock, Central Midlands and Central Wheatbelt leagues, who had also had their season cancelled. Sadly there wasn’t enough interest to make this happen, but do you reckon that stopped us?!

With the hopes of a Quairading team eventually distinguished, a handful of our boys wandered down the fence line and joined in a few training runs with the Corrigin Tigers. With some playing ressies and some playing league, they’ve all put on an excellent display over the last eight weeks— and have even collected a few awards! In addition, a few of our players have also been lucky enough to get a run with other country and metro clubs.

The Tigers are playing their last game for the season this Saturday (29th August) in Corrigin against Bruce Rock, and would gladly welcome any extra Quairading supporters to cheer them on. We’re stoked this friendly club relationship has kept some footy carrying on, with Tuesday trainings at home continuing strong BUT, we also can not wait for the mighty Quairading Bulls to come back bigger and better than ever in 2021!

When deciding on some places to photograph, I went out to Frasers’ farm to check out old vintage rustic items on their scrap heap that may be interesting. I had been thinking maybe we could have a best photo competition of a picture taken during this weekend. When strolling through Frasers’ scrap heap, I sighted an old wool scales frame and thought it would make an interesting frame to mount a winning photograph, and double as a trophy.

On the Friday night of the photography weekend we all met at the Quairading Community Building and I unveiled this surprise trophy to all the persons attending. I told them the best photo taken on the weekend would be mounted on this trophy and their name would be put on the trophy and the trophy would stay in Quairading and be put on display somewhere.

A professional photographer who was invited to help organise this weekend told me the shape of the trophy was “portrait” and suggested I tell the people to take some portrait photos (not just landscape). I then suggested, “how about we make the competition the best portrait of a person award, taken during the weekend?”. And that was the inception of THE RUSSELL STACEY TROPHY FOR BEST PORTRAIT. Some handy hints: Take your photograph in portrait orientation. Focus on the eyes. Consider if people will look at your photo longer than another. Evoke emotion to make people discuss your photo. The background is just as important as the person in the photo. Search on the internet for ideas of portrait photography and ideas.

News from Quairading District High School Life is beginning to look more ‘normal’ at QDHS, we are seeing a return of many of our activities such as assemblies, excursions and sporting events.

At the beginning of term we had our day out tree planting to coincide with National Schools Tree Day. Thanks to Rotary for the donation of the trees and support with the process, and thanks to Mrs Fraser for organising the events. The students planted about 2500 trees in just a few short hours.

HockeyWA ran a clinic for our students and although the weather was a bit blustery, all students had the opportunity to be involved in a session of skills development – with prizes at the end! Thanks to Mrs Garrett for organising that event.

QDHS Cross Country We had a perfect day for the Cross Country running with great participation and effort from the majority of our students. Congratulations to all students who participated. Regardless of finishing place, all students earned faction points towards their team total.

Green Faction: 126 points Blue Faction: 99 points Red Faction: 74 points We thank the Quairading Golf Club for letting us use their beautiful course and facilities, Quairading St Johns Ambulance for being on standby, QDHS P&C for the delicious sausage sizzle and all the parent helpers who assisted on the day. Thanks also go to Mrs Renee Anderson and Mrs Magdalen Johnston for organising a great event. We sent a strong team to Meckering on Friday 21st for the Interschool Cross Country competition and Alexis Harris received the runner up medal for the P/1/2 race. Well done Alexis!

Book Week 2020—Year 4/5/6 Book Reviews August 24th-28th is Book Week, we are exploring the theme Curious Creatures through many activities planned by Mrs Kelsie Squiers and classroom teachers, for the week.

Tuesday (Thursday for Y4/5/6) will see parent helpers in classrooms in the morning and our dress up parade will be Thursday morning at 9am in the undercover area.

Students can also enter the Curious Creature competition and give their entry to Mrs Squiers by Wednesday afternoon.

The year 4/5/6 class have created a set of book reviews which are on display in the school office for anyone who would like to see them.

Written by Russell Stacey (Club Promotion Officer) PHOTO COMPETITION WINNERS August: “Femininity” GOLD: Jessica Gregory & Russell Stacey (23) SILVER: Verna Blackburne (22) BRONZE: Marie Walker (16) “KAIZEN” is a Japanese term that means “change for the better by pushing for continuous improvement”. It is used in Japanese business philosophy regarding the processes that make humans push harder to continuously improve operations and involves all employees. I recall a guest speaker in Quairading who was in the Hockeyroos team that won gold medals at the Olympics. She spoke about this “KAIZEN” saying, which was used by their coach who was the West Aussie sporting icon Ric Charlesworth, to push their levels higher than what they thought they were capable of. I have always remembered this story and have never forgotten that this little story came from someone whose Olympic gold medal I had held.

This “KAIZEN” improvement is also noticeable at our meetings. The members when critiquing our photos on the big screen TV are opening up, discussing the pics for a longer period of time and speaking about the pics rather than saying nothing. It is something I have been really pleased about. With the members discussing their photography a bit longer, the meetings now go a little bit longer lasting about 2 hours.

The August subject was “FEMININITY”. The hardest part of this subject was to spell the word correctly.

There were hundreds of ways to photograph something for this subject and we had lots of different photos to vote for last month.

We had 23 pics in the August competition, some of the pics were of something that had to be made for the subject and lots of the pics were of something that had to be creatively set up.

Jessica & Russell shared equal first place with 23 points.

Jessica photographed her daughter wearing a bright red dress from behind whilst she was looking into a mirror. The pic had been post shoot altered with a computer and was black and white except for the dress being red coloured. It would be interesting at a photo club meeting if Jessica showed us how this is done in our learning area. Russell’s photo was of a girls lips behind a pink coloured cardboard frame. The cardboard was first painted silver for a undercoat and then painted bright pink, then by ripping the cardboard a hole was made so when the frame was held up to a face the only thing showing was lips painted with pink lipstick. Verna got second place which was only one point behind the first places with a pic of a black handbag and cream pearl jewellery. All the pearls in the necklace, earrings & rings with a black background created a smooth contrast of colours all adding to a great photo oozing femininity. Third place was Marie Walker who took a pic of a yellow handbag next to a pair of black fluffy slippers. Like Verna’s pic the bright yellow colour worked well with the

The Femininity subject was a great chance to play around with the camera.

This year the Quairading Show has been cancelled so I have had to think how we can still hold the annual PORTRAIT PHOTO competition. The Quairading CRC is assisting to collect pics and also for the first time via email, then the Creative Arts Society are going to judge the pics this year (see the advert somewhere in this BB). We have had a few Portrait pics entered in the FEMININITY subject so we already have pics that can be entered. You can use your mobile phone camera just like competitions held in other Portrait Competitions which is totally acceptable these days, modern mobile phones have very good cameras in them. The deadline is the last day in October.

To force us to get some photos taken for THE ARCHITECTURE OF QUAIRADING posters we are making instead of a calendar, we will be holding a photo shoot in Quairading and will be focusing our camera lens on the Architecture, with the pic deadline being our October meeting. Geoff is going to compile the poster & figure out how we can use both landscape & portrait orientated pics for this poster.

The Perth based photographer DALE NEILL who has won awards for photographer of the year will be hosting another photo shoot weekend at the Greenhills Pub on the weekend of September 19th & 20th featuring a ASTRO photography workshop. So handy to have this kind of thing happening just down the road. I once met some photographers that came to Quairading to photograph the stars and told me they came from the USA. I can remember that because the night they came it was all overcast and you couldn’t see anything.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm Well I guess we can dwell on the negatives like the tanks are not full and the dams have not been topped up much or we can enjoy these wonderful cool days and watch the plants thriving in the sunshine. I’m choosing to focus on the positives.

Since the last article the Almond trees at Eaglewood Farm have put on a spectacular show and as you know the Almond tree is the harbinger of spring. It may be a month earlier than the calendar tells us but the season in August is also known as ‘sprinter’ a mix of the two seasons. Along with the Almond blossoms there are Daffodils, Jonquils, Snowdrops, Daisies and flowering natives such that it’s hard to believe that winter is still upon us.

Plant of the Month – The photo I’ve used for this month’s plant, I took last year with the plan to use it this year. It was the only way I can feature it because although it is really eye catching and beautiful the blooms only last a week or so. The plant is the Indian Hawthorn, Rhaphiolepis indica. It is an evergreen shrub with leathery leaves and either white or pink flowers. It is very hardy, likes a sunny spot in the garden and is easy to look after because it keeps a pleasant shape even without pruning and once established is drought tolerant. In our area plant it out in autumn and protect from severe frost that first winter, in spring when it starts to put on new leaves give it a little fertiliser and from then on fertilize in autumn and spring each year. The Indian Hawthorn suites cottage gardens and can be grown as an individual specimen or clipped into a hedge as we have done in our garden. Ideally it should be clipped after flowering and then fertilized so that it can put on its display the following year, however, we have clipped it in late summer and still had its beautiful flowers in late August.

It’s time to…

Sow – Most summer vegetables can be sown in seedling containers and either kept on a north facing window sill or a green house where they can be kept warm until the ground in your vegetable beds has warmed up to about 16 degrees. By then, around mid October, your seedlings should be at the two leaf stage and ready to be planted out. These are the seeds we have sown in mid August but you are still in time to sow now- Basil, Borlotti beans, Capsicum, Cucumber, Eggplant, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Rock Melon, Water Melon and Tomatoes. We don’t sow Corn, Zucchini or Snake beans now because we sow these directly where they are to grow in Mid October.

Plant – some planting guides suggest that we can plant vegetables such as turnips, radishes, asian greens and other Brassicas, however, in our experience this is fraught with danger! The warmer weather in late spring invites white cabbage moth and aphids to attack these plants and in general not allow them to flourish. Aphids can also linger on these plants during summer and then build up numbers after the summer heat has abated to attack newly planted vegetables in autumn. During the month of September plant Citrus trees, flowering annuals, lettuce, asparagus, strawberries sweet potato slips.

Harvest – Late September is Pea harvesting time (can’t wait), Lettuce, Artichokes come into their own this month, Oranges, Grapefruit, Lemons, Cumquats and late Mandarins are still on the citrus trees along with the sweet smelling citrus blossom. In the veggie garden there are Florence Fennel bulbs which are delicious served sliced in a salad with slices of orange and a dressing of olive oil and white wine vinegar, there are also Snow peas, Sugar Snap peas, Spinach, Silver beet, Broccoli, Cabbage, Kale and Rhubarb.

Things to do – As we start spring there are a few jobs to do in the garden to set ourselves up for summer.

Fig trees can be pruned. Citrus can be cut back quite hard and given the first lot of fertilizer after a winter break, remember with Citrus it’s a little and often.

Fertilize bulbs after flowering has finished this feeds the bulb for next year’s flowers. Check potted plants that may need repotting. Prune hedges especially if they are young, clipping the tops helps to promote a bushier plant. Prepare the beds that Tomatoes, Capsicums, Eggplant, Pumpkins and Melons will go in, we dig trenches about 30cm deep for all these and put in manure, compost and organic fertilizers like chicken pellets or blood and bone these are covered over with 10cms of soil and left for four weeks then the seedlings are put in. We have found having trenches make summer watering more efficient because water is directed straight to the roots.

Lawns need either a topping or fine compost or some organic fertilizer and finally if you pruned your roses in late July you should be enjoying the first of the spring blooms look out for aphids and use an oil spray while the day temperatures are still thirty degrees.

Is Stoicism a Dirty Word?

It’s become fashionable in some circles to lump stoicism in with other, less than desirable traits like aggression, when talking about male behaviour. There is even an ongoing argument in the American Psychological Association about how it was controversially included as a harmful trait in their guidelines. Harvard professor, Steven Pinker argued the APA was misguided, “Stoicism is a good quality, not, as the new guidelines say, harmful”. He’s on the money when he argues that the guidelines should encourage “the masculine virtues — dignity, responsibility, self-control, and self-reliance.”

All of these are the qualities and virtues of manhood that we should be celebrating.

What is stoicism? Its origins go back to a school of Roman philosophy with proponents that sound like the cast of Gladiator. Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, playwright and political advisor Seneca, and the upwardly mobile slave, turned teacher Epictetus. But before we all don our tunics and sandals and face the lions in the Colosseum there are some modern-day and relevant ideas tied up in stoicism. Much of its underlying message is actually what underpins “mindfulness”.

Stoicism taught its followers the development of self-control and fortitude as a means of overcoming destructive emotions. Stoic philosophy advocates accepting life’s challenges, which often are not within our control, and then focus on what to do with the given situation, which is within our control.

“We can’t change what is, we can only change our reaction to it”.

These days the use of the word stoicism has incorrectly incorporates a “push on regardless” attitude by men in particular. It is used as a negative description for blokes failing to address ongoing health concerns by ignoring the warning signs and self-medicating by purely concentrating on their work. This is without a doubt a very dangerous attitude, but real stoicism needs to be celebrated. Every great invention, discovery or work of human

endeavour has been a result of stoic behaviour. It is a trait not only found in men but women also, and it is a quality to be admired. Pregnancy and childbirth are just two examples that come to mind that couldn’t possibly be achieved without a degree of stoicism.

Like anything health related, be it food, exercise, or even sunlight, the trick is “everything in moderation”. If being stoic is the only plan in our playbook, then the results will be negative. However if we learn when to be stoic, and importantly, when to ask for help, our lives will benefit immeasurably.

The Stoics of old, recognized that wellbeing depends on the cultivation of one’s character, on one’s choices and actions, rather than on what happens in the uncontrollable world around us. It is something that the Regional Men’s Health Initiative advocate every day; that the bulk of our health outcomes are influenced primarily by the choices we make and if we can be well-informed, and make informed decisions, then positive health outcomes will follow.
