Apologies to our loyal 2pm Thursday purchasers of the Banksia Bulletin—we became a little stretched thin this week and in order to ensure a top quality production of your beloved Banksia Bulletin (and not a sloppy rush job!) we had to push release time a little. It was a full half day later that you expected and you’ve dealt with the delay like true champions. Well done. To add to the utter chaos, there was legitimate concern that the printer wouldn’t even staple the Banksia Bulletin this month, as the extensive content was busting at the seams and exceeding the printers apparent sheet limit! I write this with genuine fear of shortly hitting print and then hand stapling 300+ copies. Better send help. We’re really excited for our Big Bus Day Out this Sunday! We’ll be packed to the rafters (but all will be suitably seated and belted, don’t stress) as we bus about the district showing off all that Quairading has to offer. The point of this event is to remind locals (and show new locals), through their own immersive experience, just how great our local sights and attractions are such as Toapin Weir, Toapin Rise Farm, Kokerbin Rock, Kwolyin Camp, Pink Lake, Quairading Nature Reserve and more! We’re also taking it as an opportunity to get lots of cool photos and some footage of people enjoying and sharing these attractions, so we can use them on our Visit Quairading WA Facebook and Instagram accounts to promote our goods to more people! I hope you find time next weekend to pop into the Quairading CRC Art Space for Charlie Colbung’s exhibition, Kaleidoscope 2. Note the venue change! Charlie has been hard at work for the last few months, slinging paint on canvas, in preparation for this exhibition—and all works will be available to purchase! There are so many more things I could yab about this month— and I’ve done so for two full pages (48 & 49). Please have a read! LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS Local governments make many decisions that affect your community and it is vital that your views are taken into consideration. By voting at local elections, you can contribute to effective local government. If you don't vote, you have no say in determining the person who represents you when making decisions in areas like local planning and development, recreation space and the upkeep of your community. Local government ordinary elections are held every two years, on the third Saturday in October, the next one being Saturday 19 October. Councillors are elected for four year terms, with half of the Councillors’ terms concluding at each biennial election. To be eligible to vote in an upcoming election individuals need to ensure that they are on the electoral role. For local government elections, rolls close at 5pm, 50 days prior to polling day. All electors should check their enrolment details are up to date before rolls close. If the number of candidates is equal to the number of vacancies, the candidate is elected unopposed. If there are more candidates than vacancies, then the election will proceed. INTERESTED IN BECOMING A COUNCILLOR? Nominations open Thursday 5 September and close Thursday, 4pm 12 September. QUAIRADING YOUTH CENTRE We are back on again! We are preparing our garden currently for spring and summer. Chickens are laying well, they are the best fed chickens in Australia. The Youth Centre are finalists in the Tidy Towns Awards, Environmental Education category, a great achievement for all those involved and to the kids for their dedication to the garden. Our Better Choices Laser Tag day went very well with around 40 kids attending. A big thankyou to all the helpers and our local police for such a fun day. We would like to welcome Cynthia Dann to the Youth Centre, already she is coming up with some fun crafts and activities for the centre. QUAIRADING TOURIST AND TIDY TOWN COMMITTEE UPDATE Thank you to Deidre Edwards and Sue Anderson for their help to compile the town historical map which is now on the east wall of the station, with more photos to be added at a later date. We are looking for more small items of memorabilia to add to the station museum. The car park markets are on this month, Saturday 21 September from 7:30am. Devonshire tea’s and coffee will be available from the Old Railway Station. Come for a peruse or hold a stall yourself for $5. Outgoing committee president: Margaret Collins, volunteered many hours to write a successful grant application, together with valuable supporting sound assessment by Steve Ramm – the technicalexpertise and audio guru from the Beverley Platform Theatre. And of course the funds were generously made available by the Community Broadcasting Foundation.
The Voice of the Avon now has committee members from Beverley, Gwambagyne, Kauring, Spencers Brook and York. Expect to see even more outside broadcasts, fresh voices, new roles and opportunities at the station. And there will be keen focus on delivering even more of the kind of programming our listening community is asking Voice of the Avon to provide. 101.3fm will build on the enthusiasm, evolving skills and ideas, that have emerged from the bright blue studio building on the corner of Barker and Forrest Streets in York, in recent years.

Last year they granted more than $16.8 million to Voice of the Avon is your community radio station – help community media organisations communicate, you’re invited to be part of the station and stay connect and share through independent radio, tuned to 101.3fm! television and digital media. And for 101.3fm, that has means vastly-improved sound. Noisy traffic, and even rain on the metal roof, no longer intrude to drown-out voices of our volunteer broadcast team! The vivid red, yellow and biscuit-coloured panels make a far more inviting and professional studio environment; plus the bonus of better temperature insulation. It’s an even greater pleasure to broadcast! New Voices in Leadership President Margaret Collins, and her dedicated committee, handed on the leadership baton at the AGM on 21st August. The outgoing team greatly enhanced the governance structure (and the building structure!) - both vitally needed - and set Before a strong foundation for progress. Thanks indeed to Steve, Christine and Lisa for all they willingly contributed to the committee. Welcoming the brand new treasurer and committee members at the end of the AGM, was incoming president: Keith Taylor. Congratulations and thanks to the other new faces: Susan McCloud, Lesley-Ann Hoare and Peter Carlyon, together with the re-election of Chris Heaton and Rhonda Jackson. Keith transfers from sharing his extensive media experience in his role as Station Manager, to tackle a different aspect of station life. COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT Written by Jill Hayes
P
ublic art has been a hot topic around town for many years (maybe decades) now. With our town being home to so many creatives of many mediums, it’s sometimes baffling that our street scape lacks real visible creative expression. That’s not to say our town and street scapes aren’t beautiful as they are; the roses, clean and tidy roads, heritage buildings, visible bushland and the most recent addition of El Toro the beautiful metal sculpture by Jordan Sprigg, provide the perfect mix for one of the most adored street scapes in the Wheatbelt. The popularity of large scale public murals has been proven all over the world, most recently and most locally through the partnership between CBH and FORM (an independent, not-for-profit arts organisation based in Perth) with the über cool Public Silo Trail. Fun fact, the silos at Avon CBH (in Northam) were the very first silos in the entire country to be painted and were the starting point of the craze nationwide.

In the case of the Public Silo Trail, large scale art – by renown and respected artists – attracts visitors. Art in any medium and size provides something different from the everyday, to stop at, look at and enjoy. This considered, and coupled with the Instagram obsessed generation becoming increasingly keen to get out of the city (I can talk about them, because I am a proud member of said generation), photo worthy murals are an excellent addition to any road trip itinerary. With the vast Wheatbelt being a region hard to avoid on a WA road trip, it’s sounding like high time Quairading added a mural to our growing list of attractions, don’t you think? Attracting visitors and their tourism dollar aside, murals are a brilliant way for a community to illustrate who they are, where they’ve come from and where they’re going. PAGE 48
There’s no doubt Quairading has a rich history and there are many stories that have led our community to what it is today. Being humans as we are, we all bring different experiences and stories to the table and as such, how we each see our community will differ from each person to the next. The community I see is a beautifully diverse mix of unique characters from all walks of like, full of unrivalled passion, choosing to live in one of the oldest and most stunning pockets of land in the world. I see hard working individuals, families, groups and businesses with common goals of progress— all essential fibres that when woven together make the freakin’ best community in the state, country, world! If you have feelings of positivity or agreeance to anything so far, I hope you’ll be delighted to know that the Quairading CRC has been working on a Community Mural Project and we’re about ready to hit go! Over the past twelve months we’ve been talking to artists and doing lots of planning to develop a project that delivers a multitude of social, community and economic benefits. In early 2019 we sought financial support of the project from a number of funding sources and we’re very proud to share that we’ve had great success. We’re lucky recipients of funding from Lotterywest and the Shire of Quairading, the latter through the local Community Grants Program. We’ve also received support from the Quairading Tourist & Tidy Town Committee. The end product of this project will be a large mural on the western exterior wall of the Quairading Co-op, designed and painted by friend of the town, Luke O’Donohoe.

WHO IS LUKE? Luke O’Donohoe is a Perth-based, Western Australian artist centring his practice on large scale murals and public art. His work has a definitive typographic lean and is influenced heavily by the age old craft of signwriting. Luke draws on a variety of sources for inspiration, chief amongst them graffiti, signwriting, typography, advertising and design as well as more traditional art movements. He has synthesized these inspirations; the result being vibrant, balanced and compelling paintings usually one part typography, one part abstract composition, one part figurative painting. Luke’s recent projects include commissions for Perth venues such as Panama Social, Tiny’s and The Blue Flamingo. Previous clients include FORM, Water Corporation, City of Malaga, Gage Roads and Liquor Barons.

The best opportunity for your to share your ideas, will be through our Community Mural Planning Workshop. This will be a chance for Luke to demonstrate some of his skills and techniques and an opportunity for you to learn and practice some skills too—plus of course have a chat with Luke (likely over a cuppa or a beer!). As we go to print, the date of this workshop hasn’t quite been confirmed, so keep an eye on the Passion Sheet and our Facebook & Instagram over the next few weeks for finer details. We hope that the successful completion of this project will provide our community a piece of art to feel connected to and proud of. We hope it brings more visitors to our main street precinct and a boost for our local businesses. Most of all we hope it inspires and engages more creatives and more projects to continually improve our wonderful community.
Luke brings with him a wealth of experience in working with communities, commissions and large public installations—as well as a following and a strong reputation.

Luke has visited Quairading on a number of occasions over the last few months, including the running of a School Holiday Youth Week Street Art Workshop back in April where he painted the ‘Transam’ mural on the eastern wall of the current CWA Op Shop (read about how that mural came to be on page 44).

Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations.
Making damper (Mereny) I recently had an experience of making damper with our local Noongars in town. Seems like an easy thing to do. Well let me tell you there is a knack to it. A good damper consist of one part self raising flour, one part plain flour and warm water to mix. Yep sounds too easy. I made mine and my Noongar friend, as she made hers alongside me. Mine turned out hard and chewy, where as my mentor’s was light and delicate. I then closely observed the technique used and found that once my friend had finished, the dough was light and hollow sounding. I soon learned that a good damper is more about the method than the ingredients. I have since talked to another friend and he recommended cooking your damper in a pan. So I tried that it worked out well. Being of Italian decent myself I added some olive oil to my mix and use whole meal plain flour instead of just plain flour, then cooked it in a frying pan on top of my wood heater, yum! So why not play around and cook a hearty damper for yourself.

SWEET POTATO & LENTIL SOUP Recipe from livelighter.com.au
INGREDIENTS olive oil 1 large onion, diced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 2 sticks celery, diced 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbs ground cumin 1 small zucchini, diced 500 g sweet potato, peeled and diced 2 x 420 g cans no-added-salt brown lentils, undrained 1 L salt-reduced chicken stock 500 ml water fresh coriander, chopped, to serve METHOD Step 1: Lightly spray or pour oil into a large pot and place on medium to high heat. Step 2: Add onion, carrots and celery. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring often, until vegetables have softened. Step 3: Stir in garlic and cumin, cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Step 4: Add zucchini, sweet potato, lentils (including the water they are canned in), stock and water; stir until well combined. Step 5: Bring to the boil and simmer, partially covered, for 20 minutes until vegetables are tender.

INGREDIENTS 1 3/4 cups plain flour 1 cup cornmeal 1/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/4 cups milk 1 large egg *For Southern-style cornbread, reduce the sugar; or eliminate it entirely. METHOD Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly grease a 12-cup standard muffin pan; or line the pan with papers, and grease the papers. If you like, substitute a 9" square or round pan (a cast iron skillet will work fine, too); or a shallow 1 1/2-quart casserole dish. Step 2: In a medium bowl, whisk together all of the dry ingredients. Step 3: In another bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together the wet ingredients and then add this all at once to the flour mixture, stirring quickly and gently just until combined.
Step 6: Ladle soup into bowls and sprinkle Step 4: Stir in 1/2 cup melted butter. with coriander, if desired. Hint—Increase the amount of water for a thinner soup, or process half the soup with a blender or stick mixer for a thicker texture. Variations—To make this soup vegetarian or vegan, use meat-free stock eg. vegetable stock or "chicken-style" stock Add one thinly sliced fresh long red chilli to the onion for some spice and serve with a dollop of natural yoghurt.
Step 5: Scoop the batter into the prepared pan. For muffins, fill the cups about 3/4 full. Step 6: Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the muffins are set, or the bread baked in a pan is starting to pull away from the sides. A toothpick inserted into the centre of either a muffin, or the pan of bread, will come out clean. Step 7: Remove the muffins or bread from the oven. I like to tilt muffins in the pan as soon as I take them out of the oven, so their bottoms don't steam and become soggy. PAGE 59

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk September has arrived! We may not be ready for the warmer months but they are coming anyway! There’s a saying that goes something like: the difference between a tidy garden and messy one is one week. Well I certainly learned that this August. After thinking I had got away without any serious flu this winter I was hit and hit hard. After a dramatic airlift to RPH the final verdict was a virus. My gardens have flourished during my absence and of course so have the weeds. So the next two weeks will be dedicated to garden maintenance. After a little rain in August most plants are looking happy, there are Snow drops, Jonquils, daisies, Acacias, Sturt’s Desert pea, Thryptomene, Grevillea, Calendula and of course the almonds and stone fruit all adding beautiful colour to our garden. I’m sure everyone is enjoying this special time of year, and September will bring roses into the mix as well.
for citrus. We have just tasted the first of the asparagus spears and next week we will have our first artichoke dinner. Things to do – after the next rain we need to start thinking about mulching. It is a good idea to top up mulch around fruit and flowering trees. Also mulch around strawberries and use a snail pellet under the mulch to deter slaters (be careful with these pellets as they are harmful to pets). It’s time to trim hedges and any shrubs that have finished flowering or are looking untidy after winter. It’s also time to trim passion fruit vines to encourage new growth and promote laterals from which the fruit will come. Fertilise roses with a high potash mix; watch out for aphids with the first warm weather and mulch around roses keeping clear of the stem. WELCOME TO THE BULLRING! Last Sunday saw the Quairading Football Club field two teams in the 1st semi-final. This has not happened since 2008! Fantastic effort and congratulations to coaches Paul Dilena and Shaun Simpson for getting the boys there. Although the results at the final siren in both games were not the result we were looking for— the supporters, members and town are very proud of both teams for getting to play finals football, this holds us in good steed for next season. Thank you to all the supporters and volunteers who were at the game in York and helped out.

BELLES NEWS 2019 Well the games are over and the dust has settled on another season of Avon Netball Association for the Quairading Belles. We started the year in March, training under the expert and enthusiastic guidance of Janine Anderson, before I stepped in to the roll as new coach in April. It had been 12 years since I first coached the Belles in their inaugural year in 2007. The squad had only changed a little from the previous year but for all of us it was like a new start. I’d like to sincerely thank these girls, who were our regular and local Belles players: Tamara Spark (C) Val Hayden Waynesha George Lucy Osborne Hannah Carlton Ash Kujawski

It was a huge learning curve to find out the most current and suitable ideas for training sessions and game day warm-ups and strategies. The girls had to adapt and adjust to this, which is not always easy, so I’m very appreciative of their general acceptance and willingness to try out any new ideas. Of course some things worked and some didn’t but that’s all part of the experience. Training became an important focus to achieve game time. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our captain, Tamara, who went above and beyond in her duties this year being a great inspiration to her team members as well as myself. Tamara also took on a huge roll with the Belles fundraiser this year being the caterers for the Mutton Cup. A big thanks also to Dani as our vice-captain, stepping up at games when Tamara wasn’t available. With most of the girls in the squad having no other opportunity to play netball anywhere else on a regular basis, I decided to go with the approach that ALL players would have some game time each week. In regards to the actual games, we came up against some incredibly experienced teams but we generally put up a very resolute effort and got really close in some of the games. I think the important thing to be taken out of these games, seriously, is whatever positon the team is in score wise it is important to keep the effort up for 4 quarters and never stop trying. Also half our team were school students, which is a credit to them and if they keep up their training and fitness they have really bright futures. To our ‘mature’ or experienced players – well done ladies – there is so much skill amongst you and so an aim for the future is matching up that experience and skill with the emerging skills of our youth. Game wise we ended the season on a really high note winning our LAST GAME against York by just one goal 30-29. It was so exciting for us and extremely satisfying for me to see the four quarter effort, determination and want to win that game. QUAIRADING JUNIOR GOLF Another cracking season of junior golf, done and dusted. This year we registered 13 members, ranging in age from 5 to 12 years. We met every Tuesday afternoon of second term to play golf.
When the juniors are out on the course, they are chaperoned by a parent. Thank you to the fabulous golf parents who turned up every week to walk. Junior golf would also like to thank the Quairading Golf Club for their strong support and use of the golf club. They are also amazingly quick to offer a helping hand on Championship Day.
Once again, PGA coaches Rob and Brayden from Marangaroo Golf course, delivered three sessions of coaching. It’s amazing how much the children improve in just three lessons. On the other days, the children played golf. They were allocated a number of holes to play, depending on their ability and stamina. This year we had a group who played 6 holes, 6 holes short and 3 holes. We also had a big PeeWee golfers group! They practiced driving and putting and had a great time collecting the golf balls!
We also thank GolfWA and the Golf Foundation for support through funding and coaching. Our championship Day was held on 2nd July, it was a fantastic way to end the season. Congratulations to the prize winners, the results are listed below. Well done to ALL the juniors, it was an absolute pleasure to have you at golf. Keep practicing and we’ll see you on the green next year!
