THEY’VE DONE IT AGAIN! The Quairading Ladies Hockey Club are riding the high of a hard fought season full of unbeatable success.
They trumped the Meckering ladies on their home dirt in a 5-0, refreshingly clean and friendly, grand finale.

It actually is pretty much all fun and games though when those other projects include things like planning black tie balls (see page 22 for all the deets on the Winter Sports Ball) and Fermentation Workshops (see the gassy details on page 14) and what’s legit going to be just the best Ag Show in all the lands (pages 29—35 are packed with show day secrets). The biggest news to shake the Quairading CRC this month was our dear friend Minister MacTiernan announcing a cheeky flip-flop on the state-wide CRC funding cut decision! Turns out they sometimes do “listen to regional communities” - we’re yet to hear more on what this actually means but fingers crossed we can carry on doing all the proactive and relevant things we do. We’re nearing primetime for wildflowers with the beloved everlastings finally starting to carpet bushlands throughout the district. If you take some pretty photos, be sure to send them our way so we can use them to promote the area to more nature lovers! And then you finish the labour of love that is the Banksia Bulletin for another month and feel incredibly victorious and someone notes that it’s only a month until Show Day and you’re totes not ready for it to only be a month until Show Day. Shout out to my brilliant Quairading CRC team for picking up the slack when we let each other take holidays—you’re heroes. And I can’t wait for a holiday.

QUAIRADING CREATIVE ARTS SOCIETY General Meeting with “Special Resolution” A general meeting, open to the public, will be held on Thursday 13th September 2018 2.00pm at the CRC Art Room. Everyone welcome. Discussion will be focused on whether the Arts Society will be closed down ie ‘Special Resolution’. The current President, Secretary and the Treasurer are resigning. If there are other people willing to take on these positions the Art Society will be able to function in the future. If the society can not continue, the money in the Bank will be distributed to other local organisations. The piano, organ, pottery kilns and other items will be distributed to other organizations, or will be sold. Funds from the sale will then be distributed to other organizations.
A big thank you to Westpac Quairading for your kind donation of $500 towards the youth of Quairading. This money will go towards the Shire’s three year vision for promoting a thriving young community. The Monday will be used to assist in building the You Centre Permaculture Garden.

THE COUNTDOWN TO SHOW DAY IS ON! An update from the Ag Society To say we are SUPER excited would be a massive understatement because this year’s show is going to be bigger and better than ever. Thanks to the continued support of Healthway the 98th act-belong-commit Quairading Ag Show will be more affordable than ever and we are proud to be offering once again, free show entry for all children younger than 16. We’ll admit we haven’t had much luck with weather in recent years, but don’t fear we guarantee it will be a fair-weather day this year (surely?!). We have super charged the Lifestyle Pavilion [which is already sold out and chock full of vendors]; the ridiculously talented Linzi Carter is back painting LIVE; Peta Preston Image Stylist will be holding mini masterclasses throughout the day to give everyone tips and tricks on how they can look their best; and the Silo Wine Bar will be selling food again - making it the perfect place for a late afternoon wine and nibble. The children at The Little Rainmakers have been so busy the past couple of months having lots of fun! We began the month singing and reading to help develop their language skills. The older children read ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and decided they wanted to act it out. We had a look in our cupboard and found some red material and a basket. They all did such an awesome job remembering the lines and there were lots of laughs! We also read ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ and set up our very own bear hunt inside, and a bear hunt sensory table (there was a lot of mud!). Miss Catherine brought in the new Peter Rabbit movie when we had older children in for the day. We set up some mats and put the children’s bedding on. They snuggled up together and loved it. We also set up a Dr’s Surgery with our new Dr’s dress ups. The children have great imaginations. They put the dolls in the cots so they could look after them. We even found an old First Aid Kit, and soon after all the dolls had bandages on them. We had an eye chart up on the wall and Kaleb was very happy that he could read all of the letters, which meant he doesn’t need glasses! The children (and Educators) had a brilliant time at our annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic. We all dressed up in our Pyjamas and ate Jelly, Fairy Bread and chocolate biscuits. All of the children brought in their favourite teddy and told us all about them. They also made paper plate bear masks, read the story ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ and sang bear songs. PAGE 36

Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations. Salinity is a term relating to various inorganic minerals or salts dissolved in a given volume of water. Primary salinity occurs naturally in the environment through natural processes. Secondary salinity occurs due to changed land use via human activity. In the JDA survey of 1994 for Badjaling, salinity ‘is occurring throughout the Wheatbelt and the full effects of clearing for agriculture have probably not yet developed, so that further salinity is expected to occur�. The time for the 68 square km catchment to reach hydraulic equilibrium with the clearing which has occurred may be of the order one hundred to two hundred years Shire of Quaiarding, Northam Toyota, Badjaling residents and Planet Ark have just undertaken the planting of three hundred salt tolerant trees. The Youth Centre intends to grow a further 200 trees per year as part of our youth program. The residents of Badjaling are very happy to see the unique flora and fauna of the area being cared for. PUBLIC SCHOOLS ENQUIRY PROJECT MANAGER REPORT As of last week, the Project Management Framework has been approved and endorsed by the Regional Executive Director, Alison Ramm, and the Director of Public Schools Accountability, Rod Lowther. Following the endorsement, we have now entered the second phase of the School Improvement Agenda. Staff have worked together with Mr Paul Mathews, support Principal, and have agreed the improvements will require the support of several committees. Further, the staff have since formed committees based on their expertise, passion and professional knowledge. They will work collaboratively over the next eight weeks to plan for school improvements, addressing the six Actions for Improvement stated in the Performance Enquiry Report. The Q Spirit Committee will focus on investigating, reviewing and developing a Communication Policy and Procedures framework that is inclusive of all stakeholders and respectful of the specific needs of community sub-groups. This committee will also be planning and formulating strategies to improve the image and reputation of the school. The Q Spirit Committee, chaired by Daniel Kujawski, will utilise the collaborative meeting time on Tuesday afternoons to meet, discuss and collaborate on this plan. The Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework (ACSF) Committee will give particular attention to embedding the ACSF into all aspects of teaching and learning and daily operations at Q.D.H.S. The committee, with input from all staff, will collaborate to develop an agreed aspirational vision for students that guides all related planning, decision-making, and resource deployment. The ACSF committee, chaired by Laura Eastwood, will meet Wednesday afternoons to work collaboratively on the plan. The Future Q committee will be working collaboratively to form a plan that will encompass the school’s strategic direction, planning and intent to improve outcomes for our students. The Future Q will formulate their plan based on relevant data, research and evidence. The committee will also be exploring options to initiate an externally facilitated whole-school cultural change process. Future Q, chaired by Taryn White, will also be utilising collaborative meeting time on Tuesday afternoons to plan. The Leadership Team will be working closely with the Regional Executive Director to plan for improvements in their professional practice. They will undertake professional learning and coaching relating to the Actions for Improvement stated in the Performance Enquiry Report. All three committees have met and begun the planning process. The ease of which the formation of committees unfolded, has proven that all staff are committed to school improvement. It is absolutely essential that parents, caregivers and the wider community understand that ambitious quality instruction and student learning remain our number one priority at Quairading District High School. SCIENCE WEEK
At Quairading District High School National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology with multiple science events across the nation. Science week is designed for everyone and it provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists’ to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the younger people. At Quairading District High School, there were plenty of events happening during the science week celebration. The students actively participated in various events and learnt different Science concepts through hands-on methods. Open Classroom Tuesday All the classes at QDHS were open to students, parents and community. The students displayed their Science projects and also did mini presentations to explain their scientific understanding. It was evident that students showed so much pride in their work and were able to present it to viewers in an excellent manner.
Junior Science Fun Wednesday The junior primary students had great fun learning about animal groups. The Squires brought in some live animals from their farm and the students had a brilliant time learning about them. They also had various other craft activities.

Science Day Thursday On Thursday for Science day there were many whole school activities. All the teachers were involved and the students got to experience different stations with unique activities. The students worked together in groups in some of these stations to complete the Science challenge. Some young scientists from National Science Youth Forum were invited to conduct these sessions.
Special Science Assembly There was a special assembly and it was addressed by the budding scientist from Quairading Emily Groves. She gave an inspirational talk to motivate students to take up Science for their future studies. The students were inspired and fascinated with her passion for Science. There were two other guests from the National Science Youth Forum, who shared about their journey with Science.
Scinema Friday The Science week celebration was concluded on Friday and the students watched various science movies. They even analysed the role of media in the spread of scientific knowledge. Overall it was a great Science Week at Quairading District High School.

PHOTO CLUB NEWS Written by Russell Stacey JUNE: Monochromatic 1st Geoff Hall, 2nd David Whyte, 3rd Lyn Whyte July: The old days & now 1st Geoff hall, 2nd Alan Carter, 3rd Alan Carter August: Windows 1st Verna Blackburne, 2nd Alan Carter, 3rd David Whyte June’s subject was “monochromatic”. This term came from ancient greek artists, mono meaning one and chromatic meaning colour. But oh it was a learning curve to get this right. The idea was to only have one colour in your photo and vary the tones. However to confuse the issue, the colours black and white are deemed neutral. So you can have a colour of your choice plus black and white also in the same photo and its still monochromatic—totally confusing at first and still is! This was an interesting subject and was confusing for all, but great fun. It allowed us to be creative and think more about taking a winning photo. This is the cool part about Photo Club, trying to take a photo that is not just a standard photo, but to think about taking a great photo to win the monthly comp. July’s subject was to source an old black and white photo from the good ole days & take a comparison photo of what it is like in the year 2018. This is the theme for our 2019 calendar, it’s going to have various old photos of Quairading compared with photos taken this year. August’s subject was windows. Since last Photo Club meeting I have seen so many windows that would make a really cool photo and this is what I enjoy about Photo Club—checking out what could have been a great photo for competition subjects. Hey!!! What did you think of our exhibition held at the Quairading CRC and then displayed
at Greenhills Hotel?! There were 97 photos on display and every single one of them were better than any other photo displayed at any other exhibition any where in the whole wide world! How good is that! After all that effort we need somewhere in Quairading where we can show them off a bit longer. What about you showing off your own photos even if your not a Photo Club dude? We have the Quairading Ag Show coming up soon, so start getting your photos sorted and dropped off at the Quairading CRC prior to the show day for judging. At the Quairading Ag Show this year, the photography section which everybody can enter, will hold a People’s Choice Vote on all the photos entered in the Portrait category. If you win, your photo and name will be put on our Photo Club trophy and displayed at “Photo Club Corner” where all our photos are displayed in the Quairading Co-Op window. There is a photograph workshop weekend coming up soon held at Greenhills. I will be going to that to get some ideas of what everybody else is doing wrong. Springy weather is upon us and photo opportunities are right here in q town that equal all the worlds tourist spots, so get out there and take some photos and bring ‘em along to Photo Club and think about joining our Quairading Photo Club! GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk
H
ello and welcome to Spring. Well I think you will all agree we’ve had good rainfall this winter without it being overly wet, at least not at the time of writing. Our gardens are happy and thriving, and the citrus especially are looking a treat. Spring bulbs are up and Jonquils and Freesias are flowering. This is the time of the year where we can be fooled into believing that anything can be grown in our area. So try not to be tempted by those beautiful tender flowering plants that will shrivel on the first “hot” day in September.
Plant of the Month
It’s time to ……
Eremophila maculata, Winter Gold, is but one of the many, many Eremophilas which are available. In fact of the 260 species almost 230 are endemic to the arid areas of our state. Their growth habits are varied, from groundcovers to small trees. Winter Gold is a small shrub which grows to one metre, with bright lemon yellow flowers which cover the plant from July to November, and spot flowers throughout the summer. All Eremophilas are drought and frost tolerant and once established will not need any additional watering other than rainfall. Neither are they fussy about the soil they are planted in. At Eaglewood Farm they are planted in clay without any additions apart from a little aged horse manure in the planting hole. Eremophila Kalbarri Carpet is on the dam banks and is totally ignored throughout the summer and it continues to flower and grow so well that now two plants put in about five years ago cover an area of approx. 10sq metres. And for the ultimate easy care quality, these plants don’t require, nor do they like, fertilizers. Eremophilas are at home in a native garden and in an exotic garden such as a Mediterranean or cottage style garden. They are one of my very favourite plants.

Check potted plants aren’t water logged if they are sitting in saucers. Tip-prune any native plants that flowered in winter. Liquid fertilise fortnightly all the bulbs that are flowering so that the plant can build up its stores for the following year’s flowers and continue fertilizing until leaves have withered completely. Prune passion fruit vines by one third and fertilise. Fork lawns and give them a light fertilising with pelletised manure. Fertilise fruiting trees and mulch everything in order to retain as much moisture as possible. Weed around onion and garlic plants.

Getting out on the course and playing golf is what it’s all about. Our kids play either 3 or 6 holes, depending on their ability and stamina. As their skills improve they progress to playing more golf with less modified rules. The youngest beginner group is called the PeeWees. They practice driving and putting, play novelty games and make us smile!! This season Junior Golf enjoyed fantastic support from our parents. WA GOLF FOUNDATION Supporting Quairading Junior Golf The WA Golf Foundation promotes and supports golf throughout our state. One of the ways they achieve this is by providing clubs with valuable funding opportunities to further develop their golf programs.
As a result of the grant, we are in the process of having two community members sit a Community Golf Instructors Program. We are looking forward to a vibrant season next year!
Earlier in the year, Quairading Junior Golf was successful in applying for a grant through the WA Golf Foundation. This grant was to assist with running our 2018 junior program.
Quairading Junior Golf and the Quairading Golf Club sincerely thank the WA Golf Foundation for their generous grant and applaud the work they do in growing the game of golf in WA.
Keeping fees and costs associated with junior sport to a minimum is important to us. Programs like Junior Golf need to be acsessable to all children. It’s a great way to get kids active, outdoors and having fun together. With the gift of funding, we were able to purchase 3 complete sets of sticks, bags and buggies, sized for the older kids to use. The WA Golf Foundation also assist in securing a PGA golf coach to come to Quairading. Professional coaching is paramount to give our juniors a good start.

MIDLANDS REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY CARNIVAL On Saturday 9th June the East Avon Junior Football Association sent a team to Watheroo to compete in the 2018 Midlands Regional Development Day Carnival. The boys from Cunderdin, Kellerberrin and Quairading had travelled to Cunderdin over the preceding weeks to train under the watchful eye of Tim Stevenson and Craig Hill and were excited at the challenge ahead. Quairading was well represented with Anthony Hayden, Will Hughes, Shea Dall, Desi Williams, Rueben Hayden and Steven Hayden. Our first game against Central Midlands gave the boys confidence with the team managing to keep the opposition scoreless and then having success against Mortlock with them only able to score one point. Coming off the two successful games the boys fought hard against North Midlands only to be defeated. The final game against Avon was exciting one as they had been undefeated for the day and went into the game full of confidence. Our much smaller in stature boys made us proud putting all the determination and effort they could muster into the game. There gutsy effort paid off as they defeated Avon by 17 points. The East Avon Team were successful in winning the Midlands Perpetual Shield. The last time East Avon won the shield was in 2002, as noted by one of the players, before any of them had been born. The Coaches’ Awards for the day went to Jadd Hill, Anthony Hansen, Will Hughes and Malakai Macintosh. Thank you to Tim Stevenson and Craig Hill for their coaching on the day and weeks leading up to the event. The boys’ skills developed remarkably over this time and we appreciate all Tim and Craig did to encourage this. Thanks also to Leanne Childs for her assistance in organising the team for the day, John Hammond for his role as field umpire all day and the parents that assisted as goal umpires, scoring, washing uniforms and supporting the team. Thank you to the boys who competed. Well done on a successful day and the manner in which you represented the East Avon Association. You displayed great sportsmanship and team comradery and when things got tough you dug deep to find that bit extra. As the East Avon Team prepare to compete against Avon in the Con de ble Court Cup we wish them all the very best.

Well that is another footy season done and dusted. Although the on field performance of the Bulls did not live up to expectations, it was a very successful year off field. We had the 3rd running of the Mutton Cup with the mighty Gladiator winning the Cup. He is now been put out to pasture and fattening up nicely (for the BBQ). Barb’s High Tea which is a fabulous celebration of the work she had done for the club and the person Barb was. We also celebrated Premiership Reunions this year and the unveiling of the jumper boards in the change rooms and two Life Memberships awarded to Darryl Richards and Sascha Squiers. To have a successful football club both on and off the field we have an amazing group of volunteers who help on game day and especially when we host games, there are far too many to thank individually (and I am bound to miss someone) you all know who you are so THANK YOU.
