BANKSIA BULLETIN
OCTOBER 2026
From the Editor It feels life mere days since I sat to pen last month’s From the Editor— September has passed in a chaotic flash! While the colours of the landscapes has visibly changed this month, unfortunately one thing that hasn’t changed is the number of Netball premierships for the Belles! But alas, there is always next year. We will of course cling onto all the hope we have in the world for them—as we will for the mighty Freo Dockers this weekend! Freo fan or not, and footy fan or not, you’ve surely got to admire how much the purple haze is uniting the state in the lead up to the big GF! May they bring it home! You’ll have to excuse my proud-daughter-bias in choosing a cover photo this month as I’m too excited to use my position of power and influence to champion the newest life member of the QFNC. Read all about it, and see photos of lots of other special people too on page 28. The biggest event on our calendar this month, is the Quairading Arts Showcase! Taking over the entire CRC building, will be displays from Hot Stitches (our weekly social sewing group), our Weekly Art Group and the Quairading Photo Club. It’s a great chance for our wider community to come along and catch a glimpse into each of these groups, and see that art is alive and well! There will be plenty of opportunity to come in for a look over the three day showcase: • Friday 16th October
Open 9am—6:30pm, including an Official Opening Morning Tea at 10:30am and an After Hours Wine & Cheese Viewing from 5pm— 6:30pm • Saturday 17th October Open 9am –2pm (maybe til 5pm if you’re lucky) • Sunday 18th October 9am—12pm Also happening next door on Saturday 17th is the Vintage Club Open Day (including a Sausage Sizzle!) —a great opportunity to check out both events in one trip! A few other October events: • Kings Park Fashions will be here on Thursday 8th • We have one spot left in the Glow & Sip Makeup Workshop on Saturday 17th being held at Soluna • We’re hosting a Customer Service Info Session, facilitated by local Graeme Ellis—a great chance for customer facing employees to come together and share their best practice and experience. • Probably the start of cricket and tennis season? Though we’re yet to hear from either yet :) Happy October! Meet a local business This month, we sat down with Jill, the Coordinator of the Quairading Community Resource Centre, to learn more about her, her life here in Quairading and what she does in her spare time. Q: What’s your name and what do you do? My name is Jill Hayes, and I am the Coordinator at the Quairading Community Resource Centre. Q: How long have you lived in Quairading? I have lived in Quairading all my life, except for when I went off to boarding school and university. Q: What’s your favourite part about living in Quairading? I like having lots of my friends and family around, I think there’s lots of opportunity to get involved living in a small town. Q: How long have you been working at the CRC? 11 years. Q: What is your biggest pet peeve? It really annoys me when people misuse apostrophes and I would love to teach everyone how to do it properly. Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t working ta the CRC? As a kid I always wanted to run a hotel, so maybe that!
Q: What is on your bucket list? Honestly, I think just to see my childhood hero, Hilary Duff in concert. Q: What do you do for fun? I really like drinking a bottle of wine with friends, I like cooking, sometimes I do sewing and painting, I love doomscrolling.
Q: If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be and why? I would change everyone’s default perspective Q: Why Is the CRC so important to have in a to just be positive, I think we would all get a lot small town? further if we started from a good place. Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm So far spring has been predictably unpredictable in the weather department, with a little rain, a little sunshine, some cold mornings and evenings and all coming in quick succession of one another. Because of the driest winter in decades the soil holds very little moisture so we must keep this in mind and be watering on a regular basis starting this month. Small shrubs and annuals especially, don’t have very deep established roots therefore require this regular deep watering to help them to grow and survive the coming hot season. The October meeting of the QGLG is on Friday the 30 th at the CRC starting at 9:30am. For this meeting We will be discussing preparing our gardens for summer. Anyone who has experienced improvements in their garden after making some special preparations for summer is very welcome to come and share them with the group. This is the time of year when we admire the flowering ornamental fruit trees in public and private gardens. There are many to choose from such as flowering plums, quince, pears, peaches, crab apples and many more, all of which grow quite successfully in our area. Their flowers may not last very long but when the trees are planted en masse they make a spectacular show. Some are also available in weeping form which makes for quite a statement as a single lawn or garden specimen. These flowering trees are deciduous and flower on bare stems before the leaves come out making a huge floral impact. Pruning is only done after flowering so that the following year’s flowers are not affected. Prune to shape and then fertilize. Most of the flowering fruit trees mainly grow to about four or more metres left unpruned. They grow best in full sun in welldrained soil. Our cold winters help increase the flowering potential and in any case these trees have very few requirements after they have become established, a little summer watering will improve the number and quality of the flowers and really very little more is needed for a good display come the following spring. October in the Garden It’s time to – grow on (put into individual small pots) any seedlings you have sown for the summer vegetable garden, if you do this in mid-October they will be strong and healthy and ready to be put in the beds by the beginning of November; start feeding these seedlings with a liquid fertilizer; clip back any shabby grasses like lomandra before the heat sets in; summer fruiting trees like to set lots of fruit, this month is a good time to thin some of this fruit so that the tree isn’t over stressed and also so that the fruit kept on the tree grows to a larger size; move orchids that have been enjoying the winter and early spring sunshine into the shade, check their pots for snails which may be hiding and will take the opportunity to gobble up the tasty flowers as they open, also it’s a good time to tidy their pots and give them a sprinkle of slow release fertilizer; take cuttings from frangipanis which grow quite well in a north facing garden bed; increase the amount of food going into worm farms as the worms become more active in the warmer weather; lightly prune hedges of flowering shrubs like rosemary, thryptomene, viburnum tinus and Indian hawthorn, use the prunings to take cuttings and increase your plants or give them away; watch out for ants around the citrus trees act to reduce their numbers as they usually indicate the existence
of a scale infestation, scale can be treated with an eco-oil while the weather is still mild; this is a great time to rejuvenate hanging baskets or start new ones and begin fertilizing and watering them regularly; lastly it is a good time to start air layering deciduous trees which are starting to leaf up. Sow – any summer vegetable seeds not yet sown; I sow my large summer seeds in mid-October, seeds such as watermelon, rock melon, zucchini and pumpkin they go straight into prepared garden beds; sunflower seeds can also be sown now; Plant – seedlings of summer colour so that the festive garden is fully grown by Christmas (oops I said THE word); plant a new passionfruit vine; Harvest – at Eaglewood Farm we are still harvesting all the citrus fruits; the loquat flowers this year were burnt with one of our few frosts so there are only one or two fruits on the tree for us to enjoy; the artichokes have started as have the asparagus spears; peas are delicious when picked straight off the plant even our dog has learnt this; carrots, parsnips, turnips, swedes, fennel, lettuce, celery, silver beet, English spinach, spring onions and leeks are being continually harvested. The broad beans are flowering and will start podding by the end of the month. The last word – Remember that children, marriages and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get. Uniting Church Coraling Street We have an active program for October. The first Sunday (4th October) is our usual Communion service. Although we celebrate it every month communion can be a very special time. Sunday 11th October 10:30 am Inter-generational Service led by youth from Cornerstone Church of Christ, Busselton 67 Coraling Street, Quairading On the second Sunday (11th October) the youth from Cornerstone Church of Christ in Busselton will be leading worship. I am told that I should call it an “Inter-generational Service” not a youth service. We would love to have the church full to make their trip up here worth while so please join us. On the third Sunday (18th October) we have Paul & Caroline Mulroney from C3 Stand in Langford. Paul and Caroline have a ministry called Bold Light (see https://www.boldlight.com.au/ ) and lead worship in a number of country churches. This is their second visit to Quairading. Their first visit in July was very well received. The fourth Sunday (25th October) is our regular Café Church. At café church we sit around the table café style and read the Bible together over morning tea. It is a relaxed way of doing church and is probably more like the way that the Christians in the first century worshipped. Just as people have different ways of giving and receiving love we also have different ways of giving worship to God. As we worship in different ways it helps us to understand just how big and yet how personal God is. There is a time to be still and know that God is with us and there is a time to celebrate that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Rural Aid Article Our lives never stay peaceful nor are our lives always perfect. There are times when what we planned collapses, Life throws a curve ball and we find we are dumfounded, in a state of disbelief. Usually, these moments in our lives come from nowhere or evolve without us noticing, those ‘why didn’t I see that coming moments’. One challenging event can easily turn into an avalanche of emotions. But we can train our minds to stay steady even when life itself is not. A core value of Stoicism (an ancient world philosophy) is The Dichotomy of Control: Separate what you can change (your thoughts and choices) from what you cannot change (The stress causing event). What does Stoicism suggest we do when suddenly challenge by a hard time. Below are 7 suggestions. Separate the event from the story. Something challenging has happened, ‘the event’. ‘This always happens to me’, ‘the story’. Closely following the story is fear and anxiety. The moment we stop feeding the story we weaken our fear and anxiety response. Return to what we can control. We can’t control what has happened or is happening. We can’t control the actions of others, so their actions do not belong to us. But how we react or do and who we know we really are hasn’t changed, so start by being true to yourself. Stop suffering the future early. An anxious mind tries to survive the tomorrow or future even though the future has not yet arrived and is not known. Our mind will rehearse the ‘what ifs’ that are yet to eventuate or exist. Deal with this hour, the Present. Create a gap before reacting. Not every emotional response needs to be obeyed. Pause before replying, pause before quitting and pause before assuming the worst. Stop, pause, reflect, take a deep breath and then react if you still need to. Lower the drama not the truth. Calm does not mean everything is fine. Calm is taking time to describe the reality without enlarging the reality into something it is not. Calm is not believing nothing will go wrong. Calm is when things go wrong you will not abandon your true self, your beliefs or your moral stance. Remember what challenging times you have already survived. You have lived through times in the past that you thought would break you, but they did not. Memories of what we did last time and the lessons we learnt from how we reacted back then steady the nervous system. Even when what you fear in this moment is trying to convince you otherwise. Lastly protect your true self above your comfort. When things go wrong our task is not to control the outcome. The real road is to leave this moment. Leave without being cruel, reckless or doing something you will regret. Accept this challenging time will test you, but it will also teach you. Do not let this challenging time re -write who you truly are.
